Questions about Little Red Cap Contractor Pack Caulk Saving Cap, Red (Pack of 35) (LRC.50) (Original Version)
Q:
It would seem like, for longer periods, it would still work best to put a nail in the tip before putting this on...any thoughts?
Answer: The nail will temporarily work for you, but air will still get in and harden the caulk. The Red caps provide a secure seal and are easy to remove and reuse.
Answer: I am an electrician, I use clear silicone occasionally. I was always throwing away partially used tubes. These babies really work all by themselves, no need for a nail, or a wire nut or duct tape. I've used the same tube for months now, just a dab every couple of weeks. I'm sold on them. I've actually given more away than I have used myself because they are reusable
Answer: nails tend to build up rust as a chemical reaction from caulk thats why i bought these sometimes you can reuse them if you are careful taking them on and off i usually use them once or twice my only request would be that they come in larger pkg maybe 500 in a pack so far these are the best for caulking tubes
Answer: I don't think a nail would make a better seal and it just may introduce air that might make it worse. The trick is to make a good seal and keep all of the air out. I wipe off the spout and squeeze out about half a drop of fresh caulk and then roll on the red cap. I have had some tubes of Dap 230 and Alex plus that I sealed with the red caps over a year ago that were ready to go after rolling the red cap off.
Answer: That would work the best.
Answer: If you're sealing latex caulk, the nail may rust and discolor the caulk. The jury is still out with me and this product.
Answer: As tight as these fit, I'd prefer the cap to the nail.
Q:
how are they packaged in this offer from Amazon? Other listings show a plastic box.
Answer: The one that I purchased came in a little round plastic box, 35 count. I also must say, THEY WORK GREAT!
Answer: They are packaged in a little round plastic container - very convenient and easy to stow.
Answer: They come in a small round plastic container. It's a little larger than a tin of shoe polish. They're well worth the money. I've saved tubes of Simpson strong tie epoxy, liquid nails, silicone and poly caulk for weeks and months with these.
Answer: A small round plastic box for convenient storage.
Q:
Are these meant for ~10 oz. cartridges only? Or will they also fit on "quart"-sized (29 oz.) cartridges?
Answer: They will also fit the 29 oz cartridges as well.
Answer: They are a one size fits all product. I use them on the big cartridges.
Answer: I have never used them on the larger tube but I believe they will work just fine.
Answer: Yes. They will fit on any size cartridge. The only thing that matters is the size of the nozzle. Note that if you cut a very large opening in a nozzle (3/8ths or larger) the caps can be a little harder to put on - otherwise they work well on just about anything.
Answer: They will fit the quart size
Answer: Probably, they stretch out. If it will fit in a caulk gun then I would say yes ?
Answer: I've used them on both, there is plenty of stretch, and with a little care they are good for many tubes over time
Answer: Although I have not tried the larger tubes, these caps seem to have enough stretch to seal them properly.
Answer: I have only used it on 10 oz, and they have worked well. Putting it on a 29 oz might be stretching to far for an air tight seal.
Answer: They're stretchable and fit on both. They don't work for me though. The DAP Caps do work well, especially if you squirt some goop into the cap before shoving the nozzle in, so as to make a broad sealing surface between the nozzle and the cap.
Answer: They fit on most of the cartages I have used, as well as glue bottles. In my opinion they are great. But I feel they are somewhat expensive for what you get.
Answer: They will fit on both. Check the price now, they have gone down in price. They can be used over and over again.
Answer: I am not sure. But I assume that they would.
Q:
Does it work for silicone RTV (which is very hard to seal unless the tube has a snap on cap)?
Answer: Yes, if it is in a caulking type tube. It wouldn't work if you buy it in the smaller metal squeeze tubes.
Answer: Yes. I've sealed RTV for over a month using these caps.

Q:
How much does the item weigh? It says 10 pounds, is this correct???
Answer: That must be a misprint. The container is similar in size to a round breath mint container. I would think much closer to 10 ounces rather than pounds.
Answer: 10# is wrong. it weight almost nothing. just a small rubber sleeve which rolls over the open end of the caulk tube.
Answer: Amazon site says .07 pounds so it is very light. All 35 caps in the plastic container weight less than one AA battery.
Answer: No. It's a small, round plastic container that holds the red caps. A few ounces, at most. Unless you buy them by the dozens, it's not a 10-lb shipment.
Answer: It doesn't even weigh 10oz.
Answer: Less than 1/4 of a pound
Answer: Same answer as 1972mgb. Container a few ounces at most.
Q:
Can these little caps be reused? Or is each cap a one-time use kind of thing?
Answer: Yes they can, pretty sturdy so they can be reused until they crack or get a hole, which doesn't happen easily. Like a rubber band, they will crack with time though.
Answer: Frirst off these things are great. I own and operate a remodeling company. We use these on every tube of caulk that we don't finish. They can be reused until you finish the tube. We keep a pack in every van. Worth every penny!
Answer: yes they are reusable however products like Liquid Nails does dry and make it hard to pull the "red cap" off to reuse.. but that's after the tube sits for over a few weeks!
Answer: Yes, they unroll on the tube and roll back up to take them off. Reuse will be limited by time, rather than number of uses, as they deteriorate over time, crack and fall apart. Still a great way to seal a tube, just not for long time storage.
Answer: I use multiple times. Key is to make sure the tip is basically clean before placing on for best long term use
Answer: I am re-using them as they seem sturdy enough and should be able to get multiple uses out of each one with minimal care.
Answer: Yes. It's best if you wipe off the tube nozzle first.
Product reviews of Little Red Cap Contractor Pack Caulk Saving Cap, Red (Pack of 35) (LRC.50) (Original Version)
El Dorado Dave : Great idea!
What a great idea! Lots of different applications for these, but the caulking tips definitely work well. I put a couple on the tips of my epoxy bottles too. They roll on, well, like a condom. Unlike a condom, they can be removed and reinstalled. Probably pay for themselves in eliminating one or two tubes of wasted caulk or glue.
Fish_Fear_Me : Not bad, but not great!
While working on my boat, bought these to try to keep my 3M 4200 and 5200 marine sealant from drying out. They do a fair job, but still, the sealant dried out from the tip of the applicator back to the tube, and it was a chore to get the applicator tip cleaned out. For what 3M 4200 costs per tube, I'd like to see them made with a little thicker material, perhaps they'd do a better job at keeping my sealant moist.
Lowry : Caulk condoms!
This is one of the best things I have purchased and saves money on wasted caulking.
On suggestion change the name to what it is!
Caulk condoms!
milmac : These are AMAZING! No more discarding partial tubes of caulk
These are fantastic! Over the years, I've tried many different products that claim to keep caulk from drying up in the tube after it's opened.
These actually work.
Other products I've used in the past keep caulk soft for a month or two, at most. I recently re-used a tube of caulk that I had sealed up with a Little Red Cap OVER A YEAR AGO and the caulk was just as soft, smooth, and free-flowing as the day I opened it -- just like using a brand-new tube.
G. Farnsworth : Perfect for caulk and for protecting your shirt from your pens!
I really love these and recommend them to everyone. I have two uses for them:
1. The main use I have for them is the one for which they are designed: keeping tubes of caulk good between uses. In the past I used to put a plastic bag over the end and then wrap a rubber band around. The problem with that (besides looking terrible) is that these caulk tubes have very low friction at the end and frequently the plastic and rubber band would come off quite easily. These caps do a much better job. I don't really like actually exposing the rubber to the caulk or adhesive or whatever. So what I do is put a small square (maybe 2x2 inches) of plastic or saran wrap over the tip, then put this on top--if you want to store for a very long time and are worried about it drying, you can insert a nail in the end before putting on the plastic. This product unwraps just like a condom. It exerts pressure all along the end of the caulk tube and goes past the plastic square...it stays on and looks good. When you want to take them off, you just unroll from the bottom and they come off and look just like they did before use. So you can use them over and over (if you put plastic on there first. At Ace there are plastic caps that are intended to do the same thing but they don't work nearly as well. Actually there are several competing products but this is by far the best.
2. I also put this on the ends of my clicky pens that I wear in my shirt pocket. They are gel pens similar to a pilot G2. The problem with that type of pen is that if it ever gets clicked open inadvertently, it will soak into your shirt and ruin it. Put this over the end and that will never happen. You can carry your pens without adding bulk to your pocket and without worrying about ruining your shirts. Basically this is a much improved pocket protector.
Anyway, this is a great product. These two uses are really quite important to me, so I will always keep them around.
Paul : Just what I have been searching for!
I have been using black caps that I bought from somewhere? for sealing caulking tubes between jobs. They slid over the tube tip and had a center insert that sealed the tube very well. couldn't find any to replace it, and saw these on Amazon.
I was a little skeptical, but even more desperate, so I bought a package of these.
They work far better than I ever imagined!! You would think that the caulk would mess it up so you would have to use a new one each time you stored the tube - but, no, I have found them to be completely reusable - at least on caulk tubes!!
I haven't used one on any tubes of SuperGlue, but I can imagine that they will work equally good on them!
Oakley24 : Multiple uses, and these just work
After trying a million ways to save caulk, adhesives, glue, etc, I have finally found the solution. There is nothing more frustrating than having to buy more caulk, even though you have 3/4 of a tube that was used only 3 months before.
These little rubber caps work really well. I have not had them break as others have, they seem to be thick enough to handle the angled tip that I usually cut on caulk tubes. And after 6 weeks, I took this cap off and my caulk was as fresh as the day I opened it. Hopefully, it will stay that way for longer, but I haven't had the chance to test longevity yet.
I also use them for my air tools, since most of the plastic caps that came with them are broken or have disappeared. Also on my glue bottles, even though they close pretty tightly, I think this keeps air out completely. And I keep looking for more ways to take advantage of this ingenious product.
guyhms : Good stuff! All DIY's should have this product in ...
Good stuff! All DIY's should have this product in their workshop. We all use Caulking, but most of the time…we have some left-over…to dry in the tube. (Because we plugged the opening with a nail, or a piece of wood or whatever). This creates a long…er seal for our left-over. I have re-used mine 3 or 4 time each at least.
An other good innovation.
S. Albert : Review Still In-Progress - So Far NOT Impressed
I used this "caulk condom" on a tube of GE Silicone II. It didn't work as expected. The tube wrapper was applied as you would expect, but it must not have been air-tight. There was a bit of a bubble at the tip. When I tried to use the silicone after 2 months, the silicone in the rigid tube was cured. I busted out caulk from the back when I pushed too hard.
Previously, I've used liquid Plasti-Dip on my caulk tubes and it has worked amazing- the filling has been as fresh as when I first snipped the tip. The only bad thing about Plasti Dipping your tubes is that it tends to run, so you need to dip it a few times until you build up a layer of the liquid on the tip, and then find some way to let it hang straight down while it dries.
I tried this caulk saver again this past weekend on a tube of Polyseamseal Tub & Tile Ultra. This had previously been Plasti-Dipped and it performed like a champ. We'll see if the tube sock works as well. I'll update this review if the produc improves with time.
Don Ternes : Never throw away hardened tube again
Have been using these for years with no problems nor tubes of hardened product.
Don Ternes : Never throw away hardened tube again
Have been using these for years with no problems nor tubes of hardened product.
Davey Jones : GREAT Invention
These are the cleverest product! After using nails, tape, screws, and caps for years, this product keeps the caulk "fresh" in an opened tube the best. Also, you don't end up with rust discoloration when you start. I think that they work exceptionally the first time used - but may not be quite as good upon re-use because of introduced caulk, dirt, etc.
48-fordf-1 : Good to cap those open leaky cartridges
They seem to work good so far
MNN001 : Good product, good quality
Works well as described
rudy z. : Seems to work
So far , pretty good
BCG2012 : Could be better.
I had high expectations for keeping caulk tubes for drying out. Using these are better than nothing but some drying still occurs. Also if you unravel the entire thing, you can’t reuse them and seems like a waste.
fmwardalot : Better than tape, but polyurethane still needs a nail to keep nozzle clear.
Ha...better than a nail and tape for overnight or next weekend caulk storage. Not good for long term polyurethane storage.
So these little things work reasonably well. I used these on latex overnight, and as far as a weekend apart, and they seal up the tube nicely. Polyurethane construction adhesive and polyurethane caulk do not do so well. I left a polyurethane caulk tube covered with one of these for a month, and the nozzle dried solid, surprisingly. Solution...NAIL and Little red cap.
Not sure these are much better than a nail and tape, but definitely faster to apply that tape.
rudy z. : Seems to work
So far , pretty good
snapper : I've been using these for a while
My caulking nowadays is mostly touch-up, so I rarely use a whole tube at a time. These little stretchy latex socks keep out the air well enough to use the same tube over several months without the caulk hardening into a plug near the tip. No, they don't keep it "fresh" for years, but I'd say they've paid for themselves in saved caulking.
dan : Works really well.
This cap goes on caulking tubes easily and seals extremely well. Works on glue bottles too. It is also the right size to put on air tools to keep the dirt out when in storage.
Grand House : I still use them, but I'm still searching for a better option.
I'm a remodeler by trade and I have used these for a while now, they are just ok. They are by no means a perfect solution to the problem of keeping a tube of caulk fresh. I am usually trying to extend the life of a tube by a few days to a week or so until I use it again. It seems to be hit or miss if they work. They also tear easily when bouncing around in a truck. I still use them, but I'm still searching for a better option.
Rene : To even help prevent hardening and have easy option of restore calk coming through
I was surprised, when Menards stopped selling this product approximately this late winter, early spring...,which brought me here to find out if it still exist. Why to specifically search for it? I am not in favor of wasting caulk tube when half or 1/3 is still there, not even when very little is there; working at interior construction I have always use for any left overs sooner or later. This cap is in my opinion the only one which will help to stop drying caulk tube out very quickly (mainly at summers) or harden caulk so badly that you cant reopen it again and you are forced to cut nozzle bigger and bigger until you cant use it because it is too big or too messy......
To even help prevent hardening and have easy option of restore calk coming through, just simply leave some loose at rubber tip and fill it up with caulk....
MNN001 : Good product, good quality
Works well as described
C. Robinson : I really like these little caps
I really like these little caps. They do what they say they do for caulk, but they're also good for closing off air tool ports, which is what I really got them for. The only thing I don't like is the packaging, which is a pretty disposable plastic clam-shell package. It's a throw-away the moment you open it - unless you want these things all over your toolbox. I transferred mine to an Altoids tin. I'm not complaining that the package should be BETTER, but if you're going to make it so useless why not go all the way and save a nickel and just put them in a baggy like other products come in?
It seems like such a minor point but it's a missed opportunity. If they were in any reasonably attractive, more durable package these would be awesome stocking stuffers...
CoconutGrover : Finally - Something that works
I got these after reading a magazine article. I had my doubts because the tape solution never works. Well i used this on acrylic caulk. A month or two later i took it off and to my surprise there was absolutely no hardened caulk. I can not speak for other caulks/adhesives, but for the acrylic it worked great. And they are very easy to apply and remove.
UPDATE- Used on Polyurethane sealant and sealant was hardened in the nozzle after 3 months; i took 1 star off.
Still way more convenient than tape and i believe it works better. I plan to continue using them.
UPDATE 6/2020- Generally pleased with them, especially for relatively short term use. Reordering and back to 5 stars...
rudy z. : Seems to work
So far , pretty good
L.A. Daddy : Probably work, just not yet for me
Not sure if these don't work very well or it's the caulk I'm using but each time I subsequently go to use this caulk, it's dried up all throughout the nozzle. I'm going to go with the caulk being the issue since it's an eco type that's not normal (Eco-Bond). Because I can't imagine these little suckers not working unless they've got holes in them. They seem to create a pretty airtight seal. Maybe I need to insert a nail first as others have recommended. Perfect for caulk tubes and the like.
snapper : I've been using these for a while
My caulking nowadays is mostly touch-up, so I rarely use a whole tube at a time. These little stretchy latex socks keep out the air well enough to use the same tube over several months without the caulk hardening into a plug near the tip. JOE C : Looks like they work.
Having tired of the nail and tape approach, I gave these a try. So far (over two weeks on an opened caulking tube), it appears that these caps will do the job. However, they do not work on a squeeze tube of caulking since the fit is not as snug as necessary, mainly because the cap doesn't cover enough surface. Do be careful not to pull the caps down too firmly because they are rather thin and may tear.
UPDATE April 9, 2014. They do indeed work, and well. Just removed one from a tube of caulking that has been "closed" for over two months. No hardening whatsoever. Caulk came out just as it did when first used. In my experience, this is a must-have for do-it-yourselfers.

Steve : Priceless!
I love these little things. I used to battle the tool crib at work to keep these on hand. Sometimes I won, sometimes I lost, but once enough folks got onboard with bringing the tool crib their dried up tubes with tape, screws, and the standard hard plastic caps on them, the shop found a way to "fit them into the budget."
There are definitely functional alternatives, but if you're doing any type of finish work, these make a quick and easy seal that doesn't blow out the applicator tip and works effectively. No fiddling with pulling out dried bits of goop, no mangled end from driving in a screw. They're fast to throw on and take off and get right back to work, and time tends to be money. I keep a can around the house, and they more than paid for themselves in the first tube of high-tech sealant they kept alive for a couple weeks when weather wouldn't cooperate long enough to get outside and work.

Sleepy Joe Biden : These Work Pretty Well - But There is A Better Way
The Little red Caps are a great idea. They are easy to use, but putting them on without breaking them takes a little practice. They preserve the unused caulk for quite awhile. I keep they on hand because they are quick and easy. My only complaint is the cost. They seem expensive for a small container of rubber.
There is a very low cost alternative that preserves the opened caulk for the life of the original product. Seal the open end of the caulk tube with hot glue. The hot glue seals completely and is easily removed when it comes time to use it again. This takes a little longer than the red caps but it is less expensive and more effective.
J. Smith : Work great
A simple little item that saves a lot of caulk. I had been using other caulk tube sealers, most of them that go inside the spout. That style usually causes the spout to split and you loose the seal. Others that go over the spout are made of hard plastic and don't seal well. These are soft, like rubber, and stretch tightly over the spout. They could be used to seal many other things as well.
Jimbone : A great product and at an unbeatable price.
I read about this product in the Family Handyman. It's simple and yet innovative. Makes you wonder. Damn why didn't I think of this. As a DIY, I've tried lots of things to seal a half used caulk tube. Screws, plastic and rubber bands, plumber's putty. The plumber's putty actually got me about 90% success in reusing these caulk tubes. But now with these Little Red Cap I'm never going back. Bluntly put they work like a condom. Sealing out all air and moisture. Reusing can be tricky as sometimes they lose their elasticity or shape and can be challenging putting them back onto the caulk tube's end. I guess pretty much like a real condom which you shouldn't reuse, right?
Russell Mello : Pardon the pun, but it works!
What can I say, it's a condom for caulk. It started out as a novelty item but seems to actually work very well at keeping the tubes from drying out. Yes I put a screw in the end first then slide the prophylactic over it, and during the day using it I just slide the cap over the tube between uses. What started out as a kinda funny thing to show the guys has proven itself to be useful in the workplace. Re-useable too, more than I can say for it's larger cousins....
ChillKodama : Lifesaver
I love these things. I always end up with half-used caulking tubes and this is the best solution to keeping them from drying out. They work much better than putting a screw in the end, or trying to cover the end with plastic. Also very easy to put on and take off when you need it next.

Northly Tim : These things really work
These small rubbers for the dispense end of calk and other gun tubes fit tight and even keep silicone usable for months. Too many times I have had to open new tube for small project and put it aside only to go back to it and find it hard and unusable. Now those tubes have real shelf life. You gotta put them on the right direction. They have to unroll and cover dispensing tube. Good product!
Roger : Great product
These simply work and what a great invention. They fit very snugly around the tip of an open caulk tube. I've had these on a tube for nearly 2 years and the content was still fresh. This is a second package I ordered for use at our winter home.
milmac : These are AMAZING! No more discarding partial tubes of caulk

Mark's Amazon : Great product, I HIGHLY recommend them.
These caulk condoms are great and they really beat other options I've tried.
PROS
They are generally reusable and keep most of my unused caulk and construction adhesive tubes ready for months but I prefer a nail with a red cap/condom over it for best results. The nail allows more penetration into the tip IN CASE it happens to dry out and extends the caulks reusable life span.
CONS
They don't hold up long enough with polyurethane construction adhesives as they deteriorate and crumble the caps and the adhesives dry out however using a nail helps extend the caps life greatly. For construction adhesives, I use two caps with a nail with much better results.
The caps need to be resistant to more chemicals.
fmwardalot : Better than tape, but polyurethane still needs a nail to keep nozzle clear.
Don Ternes : Never throw away hardened tube again
Have been using these for years with no problems nor tubes of hardened product.
BCG2012 : Could be better.
I had high expectations for keeping caulk tubes for drying out. Using these are better than nothing but some drying still occurs. Also if you unravel the entire thing, you can’t reuse them and seems like a waste.
Tal A. : Cheaper than any other solution out there
This things are great!
I won't say they're sealing 100% but they seal good enough. My tubes last much longer now than just wrapping the tips with a masking tape.
You'll still need to run in a rod to clean any clogs but it's noticibly fresher. As long as you don't puncture them and when removing rolling all the way to original shape, they would last for more than one tube.
