Michael J. Edelman : Extremely light- but with a few problems
This is an impressively light reel, lighter than anything else I own. The manufacturer says it’s all milled from bar stock, and it does look that way, at least as regards the aluminum parts. I didn’t see anything that looks like a stamping. One part does seem too light- the thin plastic reed that functions as a “clicker.” I hesitate to say “click drag,” as this provides almost no resistance, it’s not adjustable, and you can’t switch it on and off. It‘s more of a noisemaker than anything functional.
Another annoyance: I can’t find a way to disassemble either for cleaning and lubrication. There is what seems to be a screw (see photo) that holds the reel to the frame, but I can’t loosen it with my fingers, I don’t want to use steel tools, which would scratch the aluminum screw head (or possibly destroy a part if this isn’t a disassembly screw) and there are no instructions.
While the light weight of this reel is impressive, is it functional or necessary? The reel moves very little in the hands of a skilled fly caster, especially when casting a light weight 2-3wt line, and I couldn’t really feel any difference in how my 3wt rod handled with this reel or with a heavier reel. Unless you have some special reason for wanting a super light reel, I think the typical fly fisher is better off with a more traditional reel that might weigh a little more, but will be more rugged, and more functional.
