Answer: No, there are no vented caps on the ends. When putting the chips in I just jam a larger one on each end.

Do you use this tube vertically or horizontally, or does it matter when cold smoking cheese?
Answer: I’ve only used it horizontally. I get enough smoke without the heat to be able to cold smoke cheese. I’m really happy with it! Sorry I can’t help with the vertical part of the question.
Answer: I only used it once, horizontally and it went out. Still experimenting with it. I had mixed wood chips and pellets. Thinking just pellets might work better

Answer: My husband doesn't have an answer to that problem either. He noticed the bitterness also. He wondered if there was too much smoke in that small of an area. Also if it was the kind of pellets used. He's sorry he can't be of more help.
Answer: Using pellets I didn't have that issue. I use the same pellets for smoking ribs.

Answer: Stainless steel doesn't rust. Why would u want to wash it?
Answer: Just use the brush to get the ashes out. I don't wash mine.

Do i need to keep my gas grill running when i use this?
Answer: No. What I recommend is first and foremost getting a good hand held propane torch. I don't recommend a creme brule torch because you have to put some considerable heat on the pellets or wood chips you put in the tube. Once you get your tube lit just stand on its end and let it burn for about five or so minutes, then blow it out and lay it on its side and you're ready to go. I use mine to cold smoke cheeses and its great.
Answer: Once you get the smoker tube lit and smoking it becomes a stand alone smoke unit. You can use it with your normal heat source or cold smoke with it.
Q:
Can you use wood chips or just pellets in this smoker?
Answer: Ive never tried using chips. I don’t think wood chips would last for long. There’s more holes for air than the metal boxes they sell for using chips. I get 6 hours or more using pellets.

This easily performs as advertised. I use it in a pellet smoker for additional smoke influence. I use a heat gun to start it. You don't need to fill it to use. A full tube will last for several hours. If grilling steaks, burgers, etc. for a shorter time, only fill it half way or less. The remaining ash stays pretty much in the tube and is easily disposable. The cleaning brush and silicone brush are bonuses. I'm very happy this ensemble is in my tool box of bbq staples.

This think works great. It was a little tough to get started but that was my fault. I placed it on the grill (no fire in the grill, cold smoking), propped open the grill about an inch for some air flow and set back.

Used it on an indirect heat. Didn't think it would start smoking but it did. I mixed small wood chips and wood pellets. It better than others, I've tried.

I bought this to attempt to low and slow smoke on my gas range. I've had mixed success. On my grill (Weber Spirit) the unit fits neatly between the "flavorizer bars" and the grate and lasts for a good 3 hours when the gas is on low.
Here are some things I've found.
1. This works best with pellets. It will work with hardwood chunks but in my experience if you are using chunks the smoke will last longer if you are using packets made of aluminum foil.
2. The device works best with the side with the fewest holes pointing towards the flames. I assume that this is the "bottom" but my unit did not come with instructions. I usually take this process a step farther and place it over a piece of aluminum foil that covers the bottom 3 sides. This seems to help it burn longer and a little more evenly and also makes cleanup a little easier.
3. Starting it outside the grill is only really necessary for cold smoking. Once the pellet filled tube is in the grill you can use the burner to light it. Once you see open flames, blow it out and set the temp to low.
4. Using pellets will slightly increase the temp of the grill as you are adding fuel, but using the foil method mentioned above mitigates that quite a bit.
5. If you are expecting more than 3 hours out of this device, don't. Buy two and swap them when the first is nothing but ash.
Fred Keezer : Keep it flamed up for 10 mins upright before laying it horizontal.
I use this in conjunction with my pellet grill pit boss 820xl. The first time i tried it, i failed because I didn't keep it going long enough when I started it. You need to use a good propane torch to get it flaming good. Stand it upright with a full tube of pellets, light the top so it keeps a good flame and leave it like that for about 10 mins. then gently put it on its side, it should be smoldering at this point, you won't need to blow a flame out. You can use this to cold smoke as well since very little heat is produced. If you use a pellet grill for anything other than smoking, you're not going to get a lot of smoke. This helps. Some users even use two at a time. Consider that if you want something super smoked.

This thing is great for adding a little smoke to any grill, but especially pellet grills. It's a metal tube with holes, so there isn't much that can go wrong.
Fill it with pellets and light with a torch. It will smoke for around four hours, which is more than enough time to impart a smoky flavor without worrying about refilling.

The smoker tube is well made and very sturdy but it's difficult to light the fire in it. The other issue is that if you fill it to the top with pellets before putting it on the grill, the pellets will start to fall out and if the top ones are the ones you got smoking, there's a big chance that they will roll out and then not smoke the rest of the pellets.

Two of these have turned my propane grill into a smoker. At the lowest single burner setting, my Weber maintains 180-200F. With the addition of two of these smoke tubes, it has become a safe and effective smoker. If your "smoker" ( and I am no longer a fan of smokers) lacks smoky flavor, at this price order two of these and you won't be disappointed.
My pellet grill was set at 180 F and kept pumping pellets until the firebox overflowed causing temperatures in excess of 600 deg F (the maximum reading of my controller). Not only was a $70 brisket destroyed, but it would have continued adding fuel to the fire if I hadn't been sitting 10 feet away from it and disconnected the power cord.
If your propane grill is capable of maintaining low temps (180-250 F), purchase two of these smoke tubes and you will have a very effective and more importantly - safe smoker.

I LOVE this thing, but lighting it is for pure pyromaniacs (which I'm a card carrying member). I use a heat gun and blast it for about 90 seconds, the last 45 seconds are like a blast furnace. You then have to let it burn for five or so minutes. You then have to lay it down such that the new coals remain in contact with the unburnt ones to keep the fire going. Finally, I wait about 10 to 15 mins more for the tube to get going and produce a ton of smoke. A longer process than expected, but well worth it if you plan your cooks and have the time. Buy this without reservation and enjoy, as I do. Oh, and GAS grill owners love it too, as I have gifted this to them. They put it do the side during their cooks and their gas grill becomes a smoker grill.

Depending on the pellets used, the burn time differs. The ones I used lasted about 3 hours worth of smoke. I just kept an eye on them and re-filled to keep the smoke going. Yes, I recommend.

I ordered this days before Thanksgiving 2020 to do a dry run in my electric smoker. I didn't have the smoker running, but I did have the vent opened at maximum. I just wanted to see if it would last at least the 5 hours if was intended to.
I filled it up with pellets then used a food torch lighter (the one for creme brulee is what I used) to catch the pellets on fire. Any torch will work for the pellets, but you need some type of torch lighter. A hand held lighter for cigarettes won't work.
So after about a minute, I could telI that the pellets on the end were smoldering and on fire. I turned off the torch and I let the fire sit for about 30 seconds then blew it out. Alot of smoke was coming out already so I put it in my smoker then went inside the house.
I did this at about 6pm, and at about every 30 min, I checked on my security camera to see if there was still smoke. (It was about 40 degrees outside). There was still ALOT of smoke by the time it hit 11pm. It looked the same as if it were just lighted.
For the price compared to others, I'd highly recommend.

Cold smoked for 4.5+ hrs. Filled tube to capacity with hickory smoking pellets, ignighted and let burn for about 3-4 minutes, blew out flame and set inside my cold vertical smoker and the pellets smoked for just more than 4.5 hrs This tube is about 1/2” smaller in diameter than the other smoker tube I have and produced smoke for 1 hour longer. Holds a little more pellets than the volume of 2 16oz water bottles of pellets. I don’t know how long it will produce smoke when the smoker will be up to temp. Normally, using the smoker’s tray for wood chips, I go through the equivalent volume of 4-6 16 oz water bottles in 1.5-2 hours.
