When spooling the reel with braided line do you have to use backing or can you attach it directly to the spool without using any backing?
Answer: You can go either way. Entirely up to you. I personally prefer backing AND for the spool to be completely filled. The braided line these days are so thin that without backing, you will end up applying a great deal of braided line that will never be used if you want to start out with a full spool. I don’t believe l have ever let my spools get below 3/4 filled. You will get ‘further’ and ‘much easier line flowing casts’ with a full spool as opposed to one that is a third or half full.
