Answer: No, this is a real umbrella. It covers well. But not well in small spaces.

How do you close it???
Answer: First, you open it by pulling a cord up through the center of the top of the umbrella. That pulls a plastic piece up and through which causes the arms to extend and lock into place. To close the umbrella, there’s a triangular plastic piece on that plastic piece you pulled up through the umbrella’s top. If you press that triangular piece, it slides into the side of the central piece, and the umbrella collapses. That all sounds complicated, but it’s really very easy and intuitive once you see it.

Answer: Yes. Once opened Ive found the easiest way is to put the top against your stomach and pull 2 opposite sides towards you and they will bend up like the pic shows. This only works on the ones with the ventilation top shown in the pics.

I paid $3.30 for this on June 28th. Crazy how much the price has increased!!! Regardless, I found this while looking for a backpacking umbrella. I bought this as a half joke for parties and what not. Turns out, it's actually pretty quality! Stays on the head well. The under chip strap is key. The entire product seems solid. It appears I did not need to buy a $40 lightweight umbrella for backpacking. This is perfect!

Like many others here, I thought this was going to be more humorous than functional. I ordered it thinking it'd at least be a good story. Then I started thinking about it. Walking my dog in the rain is a pain in the neck. Especially trying to handle a leash, the umbrella, and picking up after her like a good dog dad. This thing actually makes that whole process a LOT easier.
It's not terribly wide, so the coverage isn't all I wish it would be, but larger coverage would mean a lot more wind resistance, too. That wouldn't be ideal.
Also, I apparently have a really large skull. The part that slips around your head like a headband isn't particularly adjustable or forgiving. I think wearing this long term would end up giving me a headache, but for short periods it's great.

Then you need to maneuver the plastic cylinder on the string up through the hole the cord is threaded through. It doesn't always just come straight up through it without a little help.

I drove that scooter around the 2nd largest event in the World (Oktober Fest in Germany ranks first) and people stopped me and asked where I got that great umbrella. I gladly told them to check with Amazon and look for a Hunter's Tail UV Umbrella Hat. I think I was the only one riding around that didn't get wet at some time that day. I also loved the fact that I could drive that scooter using both hands as I didn't have to hold the umbrella. Great idea and thanks for teaming up with Amazon so I don't have to go out again in this spell of rain we're having.....I just have to turn on that old computer and I'm ahead of the game.

This hat is hilarious and gets tons of compliments, people love it. The quality is questionable at best and does not like the wind over a few mph but definitely keeps the sun off my shoulders. The band that holds it on your head is fully flexible and should fit pretty much anyone's head, my hat size is 7 1/2 and fits just fine. It's more comfortable than I expected. I'll probably get another one if this one fails and is not repairable since it's inexpensive. Overall, 4 stars. Nice.

It's true that this hat looks ridiculous. But, it has served quite well over two days-long fishing trips in the rain. I frankly didn't think it was going to last for 15 minutes, assuming it would blow up, get stuck, or something on it would snap and collapse. But, it's still going, and is in the cabin for the next time I fish in the rain. My buddy got one too, and we looked absolutely ridiculous fishing for hours on end in the rain. But, there was actually a nice rain shadow underneath it where it felt relatively dry. I highly recommend it.

The design is cool and I like silver coated material it is made with. Unfortunately headband it is poorly and cheaply made. It is not very comfortable either, the headband needs some padding, the pieces of umbrella’s frame are digging into the head. The headband is also too large for me, I will try to add some padding on inside of the band or wear over a hat.

I got this because sometimes being hands free in the rain is very convenient. Yes, it looks silly but that's expected and does not detract from the product. What I did not like about this was that it's impossible to open with one hand. I have a shoulder injury at the moment and it took a tremendous amount of effort for me to finally get this open. Closing it is sometimes easy and sometimes not. The closure depends on this little plastic "button" which will depress easily at times and require a fight at others. As far as wearing it goes, it is not wholly uncomfortable but the straps are scratchy and are bothersome after a fairly short period of time. Also, even though it is ventilated for the wind, it is not at all comfortable to wear while the wind is blowing and is quite a strain on the neck.

I got this on a lark, as i take long walks and sometimes it drizzles. I figured this would help keep me dry without having to hold onto something. Also, I figured no one would see me anyways, since I usually go through the hills. This is much more awesome than I thought it would be- very sturdy and well made, it's really a full-sized (compact type) umbrella you can easily carry around, as it collapses just like a regular umbrella. It's also double sided, and meant to keep out UV, so the fabric feels more substantial than a nylon umbrella. The top wind vent is also a nice touch.

I recently used this umbrella hat after the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Ga. I was impressed by the quality and durability of the product. It kept me cool. It was interesting moving through a crowd of people :) creates a good amount of space between you and others. I purchased when on sale for $5. After using it, I wanted to purchase more at that price, but to my surprise... regularly priced. I will definitely get more for stocking stuffers!

I bought 2 of these hat for myself and my friend for fishing. We finally got the chance to use it when it was pouring hard. I like the way this hat sits on my head which pretty much let's me fish handsfree without having to hold the umbrella. It covered my whole body from head to toe which help kept me dry. I love this thing! Seriously let’s me work out in brutal sun for hours. Only complaints: chin strap design flimsy...would like something more like chin straps on bike helmet and Other issue: the wind easily knocks the head harness out of place (but solved that using a few jaw clip hair thingys). Very happy overall as it solved a huge issue for me!

I've seen these around for at least a couple of years, and the idea of them always intrigued me...I just figured that they'd be really bad in a strong wind. Now that I've tried one out, I do think it's a cool idea, but it's not the most comfortable thing to wear. It's not too bad, but it uses somewhat rigid straps to attach to your head, as opposed to a more comfortable hat-style arrangement.
It claims to be windproof. I'm no where near brave enough to put that to the test. It gets pretty gusty here at times, and I'm not going to risk having this thing whip my head around or go flying off. In calm weather, though, it works great. It's nice to have a big hat that causes good shade when it's sunny and hot out.

Yep! It sure is a silly looking hat! Yep! It sure works great! Just what I need to film my grandson’s little league games. This is the perfect shade for our video camera. Makes it easy to see the screen , especially on those very sunny days. Gets rid of the annoying glare! And it’s hands free so I can use them for the camera!

I love this thing! Seriously let’s me work out in brutal sun for hours. Only complaints: chin strap design flimsy...would like something more like chin straps on bike helmet and Other issue: the wind easily knocks the head harness out of place (but solved that using a few jaw clip hair thingys). Very happy overall as it solved a huge issue for me!
