Answer: No, this is a real umbrella. It covers well. But not well in small spaces.

How do you close it???
Answer: First, you open it by pulling a cord up through the center of the top of the umbrella. That pulls a plastic piece up and through which causes the arms to extend and lock into place. To close the umbrella, there’s a triangular plastic piece on that plastic piece you pulled up through the umbrella’s top. If you press that triangular piece, it slides into the side of the central piece, and the umbrella collapses. That all sounds complicated, but it’s really very easy and intuitive once you see it.

Answer: Yes. Once opened Ive found the easiest way is to put the top against your stomach and pull 2 opposite sides towards you and they will bend up like the pic shows. This only works on the ones with the ventilation top shown in the pics.

I like the way this looks and the concept behind it. However, it wobbles & squeeks on top of my head when walking. Also, it's not clear how to open up. I actually cut my hands on the inside metal trying to open it up/figure that out. I finally realized that the string has to Pull UP Thru the top hole/then out the other side. Once you finally figure it all out - it does a Great Job blocking the sun & rain. But I'm returning this one (hopefully), for one that works Much Better!

As Southern California grandparents, we spend a lot of time in the sun watching our grandsons soccer games. As we watch, we've tried everything to find shade, especially for the late afternoon games when we are facing the setting sun.
By far, this is the most convenient solution to date. It stores easily in no more space than an ordinary umbrella, but doesn't have to be held like other umbrellas. Rather, it is worn, like a hat, including a chin strap to keep it in place when winds blow. Compared to visors, Seattle Sombreros, and other sun hats, this umbrella hat casts a LOT more shade, and also allows more air flow for comfort, without being blown around, thanks to built-in wind vents.
The only downside to this hat is that you do indeed look strange when wearing it. Fortunately, we are far past trying to impress anyone with our looks. (See photo.)

I spotted my mailman wearing this so I got one for my boyfriend who works outside. It looks silly but if you are willing to look silly this actually works. My mailman uses it every day - shades from the sun and he also wears it in the rain. So it comes with no instructions - at first we thought it was defective. We were trying to figure out how to open it before putting it on - but in order for it to open fully you simply put it on your head. The strap under your chin needs to be in place for it to open fully. So basically, don't try and see what it looks like without putting it on your head you won't be able to open it fully.

Alright, so this is kind of ridiculous. We had a lot of fun making fun of ourselves wearing it. However, there are many practical use for this. Doing some yard work in drizzle and wanting a hands free option. Watching your kid play soccer or baseball, fishing on a boat in rain or sun, walking your dog, and other times where you'd want a hands free umbrella option. It fits nicely, all sizes of heads. The fabric was good because it was thick and reflective. Too much wind would be your only foil.

The umbrella hat looks totally ridiculous and funny, I just could not resist ordering it. It has some weird mechanism on how to open it or close - you are supposed to push (or pull) on the plastic thing on top. There is no instructions at all. It comes with a cover, as a regular umbrella would. It fits everyone in the family from kids to adults. It frees your hands to work outside in the sun, as it provides much better protection than even a wide brim hat. It sits quite deep on the head. You wouldn't want to wear it in windy weather, though, unless you enjoy someone pulling on your head in different directions.

I got this because sometimes being hands free in the rain is very convenient. Yes, it looks silly but that's expected and does not detract from the product. What I did not like about this was that it's impossible to open with one hand. I have a shoulder injury at the moment and it took a tremendous amount of effort for me to finally get this open. Closing it is sometimes easy and sometimes not. The closure depends on this little plastic "button" which will depress easily at times and require a fight at others. As far as wearing it goes, it is not wholly uncomfortable but the straps are scratchy and are bothersome after a fairly short period of time. Also, even though it is ventilated for the wind, it is not at all comfortable to wear while the wind is blowing and is quite a strain on the neck.

It was interesting moving through a crowd of people :) creates a good amount of space between you and others. I purchased when on sale for $5. After using it, I wanted to purchase more at that price, but to my surprise... regularly priced. I will definitely get more for stocking stuffers!

I like the way this hat sits on my head which pretty much let's me fish handsfree without having to hold the umbrella. It covered my whole body from head to toe which help kept me dry. The design is cool and I like silver coated material it is made with. Unfortunately headband it is poorly and cheaply made. It is not very comfortable either, the headband needs some padding, the pieces of umbrella’s frame are digging into the head. The headband is also too large for me, I will try to add some padding on inside of the band or wear over a hat.

So overall good enough to rate 4 stars: does what it's supposed to reasonably well, but with room for improvement. The next question that occurs to me is "Why would I wear this rather than a raincoat?" This is obviously weird-looking, as other reviewers have said (and as you can tell by the pictures). But it works, and it's great to have a hands-free umbrella that actually is practical. The lack of instruction is a bit odd, but I was able to figure out that pulling the cord to get the little stem to pull through the opening in the middle was the trick. Closing it was also daunting until I saw that there was a small spring catch that needed to be pushed in (this should have been a different color) to allow the stem to go back down.

A little more transparent than I was expecting. Thought it would be thicker like a pop up awning or such. Will still have to cover up underneath to keep from being burned, but it does make shade.
