What is the average time for dehydrating foods? And can it over heat causing a fire?
Answer: Average dehydrating time varies by food and local humidity. Something like figs in the desert takes about 18 hours but say in Kentucky in the summer would take about 36 hours. There's usually a broad window the guide gives you that gives with the product.
Answer: Time depends on what you are drying and how thick it is cut. You can just check it till you get familiar with the process. Some things like to be turned too. It just takes practice. I don't believe it can over heat and start a fire. It's not very hot! Have fun!

You can use a convection oven but safely dehydrating raw poultry can be hazardous unless the drying temperatures are sufficiently high and the dehydrated product is properly and safely vacuum sealed packets. BE CAREFUL and do not be in a hurry because it can be risky!

Answer: I would not do more trays. The bottom tray dry faster so you have to rotate the tray or should rotate them if there is any density to your loading them. Longer drying times means less production in the long run. I personally don't think it's worth adding trays to this arrangement.
Answer: I like mine. It has 8 trays and you can leave then unstacked or stacked. When you stack it lifts about 2" in between each rack. I fir a lot of herbs in it at a time. It works very well. Worth the money I think.

Answer: If you are talking about the solid black tray at the bottom, it catches everything from crumbs to liquids. It lips upward at the center. I just tested it. It will hold almost 100ml of liquid without leaking into the heater.

Answer: It depends on what air flow will get past the food being dried. I am not sure if that will allow the food to properly dry as it should. You can experiment, that is up to you.

I wanted to post a video of it working and I still might do that on the tube. However, this thing works! I have already made two batches of beef jerky and dried a mandarin(little orange like a clementine). I used Alton Browns recipe for the jerky(it is delicious) and for the mandarin, I peeled it and then boiled the rind in a sugar water syrup allowing it to be coated and separated the slices and placed them in the dehydrator. You have to use your own judgement when drying different foods although there is a guide. The jerky is fairly easy. After you have marinated it overnight you lay it on the trays. Preferably have the trays on a towel, paper or cloth to soak up any excess marinade that drips and then stack the trays and turn the temp to the highest setting which is around 158 degrees for 6 -7 hours. Voila'

I would really love this machine if it gave any instructions at all as to how long and what temp to dehydrate various foods. There is some info in the book, but the ranges for almost everything, without temps mentioned, is 4 - 10 hours. Um, you're going to need to pinpoint that a little better. I do like how quiet it is though.

So I had to resort to buying sheets that I had to cut down and they don’t hold liquids in very well.

I have used this dehydrator a handful of times and it worked well at first but it has already stopped working. The air blows but there is no heat coming out so it doesn't actually dry out the jerky. Took me a few hours to realize this and had to finish using the oven. When it worked it was great, when it stopped it was just a useless appliance and a waste of money.

I moved the trays around every 2-3 hours to help with heat distribution, and for really watery things like pineapple I also moved the pineapple pieces themselves after about 8 hours. But by and large, it's a set it and forget it kind of appliance. I have made a bunch of trail mixes and just-add-water meals and they turned out just like I wanted! Heat is adjustable, there's a timer, it's just generally easy and does its job well. I haven't had a single thing stick to the trays in a way that didn't come off with a light scrub with a sponge and dish soap. Absolutely recommend.

Not exactly what I thought I was purchasing. I am an owner of a mushroom company, and I intended to see if it could be used for commercial grade drying. As I checked to see if it was powerful enough to deal with mushrooms, I discovered that its fan was extremely underpowered. After 12 hours in the machine, the lowest layer was the only batch that was even halfway dry.

Instruction - Manual that comes with it is pretty much useless. The fruits and veggies it references are so far out there that i can't believe anyone could get them from their local stores and the every days stuff = strawberry, banana not in the book.

Ami Lyn : Compact and easy to clean
This dehydrator looks small but it holds as more than my old large. It’s compact but can expand easily by adding or removing trays. It accommodates thick fruit easily just by turning the tray! It’s so easy to clean! You just put the trays in the dishwasher and wipe down the unit. Adjusting the temperature is a little unusual as the degrees are preset numbers but that saves you time when setting it and timer feature is a must have. I put beef on and 8 hours later when we wake up we have perfect jerky!

Everything about this is great except one thing. The heat element is weak. Don’t go by the temperature reading or it will take days to dehydrate anything. Just max the temp and it will still take longer than your cheap Nesco from Walmart but it will eventually get the job done. Other than that it holds a lot for its size the trays are very nice and it looks good. It doesn’t make much noise but that is probably why it takes so long.

Very good thing, after drying for a long time, no longer afraid of things deteriorating, made a banana that my daughter likes, the banana after drying is actually ugly, but the taste is good.

A great dehydrator with easy to clean trays. For crispy fruit chips, you do need to set temp 5-10 degrees higher and 4-5 hours longer and rotate 4 trays from top to bottom halfway through the process.

The dehydrator has a lot of heating loss from the bottom to the top, the bottom tray is a good 25deg hotter than the top tray, you have to constantly reorder the trays for uniform heating. The dehydrator does not get hot enough, even on the highest setting. The trays are a PITA to clean by hand.
If you need low heat, and don’t mind rearranging the trays ever 30-60min, the dehydrator works.

Product stopped working after 10 months, the heating element broke and would only blow room temp air. No warranty information to be found. Hopefully this review will help get a replacement.
The dehydrator has a lot of heating loss from the bottom to the top, the bottom tray is a good 25deg hotter than the top tray, you have to constantly reorder the trays for uniform heating. The dehydrator does not get hot enough, even on the highest setting. The trays are a PITA to clean by hand.
If you need low heat, and don’t mind rearranging the trays ever 30-60min, the dehydrator works.

Instruction - Manual that comes with it is pretty much useless. The fruits and veggies it references are so far out there that i can't believe anyone could get them from their local stores and the every days stuff = strawberry, banana not in the book.

Still playing with it at this time when you dry something it takes longer than what the times say for normal most stuff twice as long but still learning not sure yet if I am ready to try meat in it yet because I did fruit and it takes twice the time

Only had this a few days, but I can't stop shredding and slicing! Still have to play around with technique because my cucumber slices ended up lopsided. Clean-up is a breeze and sale price can't be beat.

Krystyly : I’ve had better, disappointing
I don’t like that you only have a few options for temperature. If I’m following a recipe, I have to guess how long to dehydrate because I typically can’t match the temperature with the limited selections this offers. It doesn’t clean as easily as the competitors brand I had previously owned and it’s impossible to find pre fitted silicone sheets like the Nesco one has. So I had to resort to buying sheets that I had to cut down and they don’t hold liquids in very well.
