Questions about PIT BOSS 77425 2.5 Gas Smoker
Q:
How long does a 20 lbs bottle of propane last?
Answer: I started with a tank over half empty and have smoked 2 -14 pound turkeys with each turkey taking 5-6 hours each. The tank is not yet empty.
Answer: I hope you don’t consider buying a pit boss product
Answer: I am still on my first tank, I have cooked several meals and like the unit. Customer support is also very good.
Q:
Has anyone made summer sausage or snack sticks with this smoker?
Answer: Don't see any reason why you can't do it. It's a very versatile smoker.
Answer: I didn't do those but did do teriyaki marinated beef strips. I accidentally left them in too long and they turned out a lot like sticks. Still a little moist and very smokey.
Answer: I haven't
Q:
How do i contact pit boss? i'd like to ask some questions before i buy, but i can't find a phone number for them.
Q:
Can propane be used to cook with?
Answer: Yes this smoker uses propane
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
How thick is the metal box?
Answer: Don’t know the exact thickness of the metal walls in the box but it is very sturdy. Very happy with this smoker.
Answer: Not sure but about 16 to 18 guage single wall
Q:
What are the specs how high ,how wide ,how deep
Answer: Specs should be in the info on the amazon page
Q:
How exactly do the dual burners work with just the one knob? Is one burner only for the wood chips and will it still smoke at low temps? Thanks!
Answer: One knob controls both burners. One for the chips and the other for smoker temp.
Q:
is there a conversion for natural gas?
Answer: No
Q:
Can i use charcoal and wood pellets together in this?
Answer: It is a propane fired smoker. The wood chips are just for smoke. You can't us charcoal.
Answer: No
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Where is it made?
Answer: Arizona
Q:
Would the ceramic briquettes be helpful with this grill. We're had them with a previous gas grill. It was so much easier to keep clean. What do you t
Answer: Probably not , as the burners are directly under the grate.
Q:
How big is the chip tray? I’d prefer to use chunks instead of chips if possible.
Answer: Small chunks are fine. I always have chunks in my chips. However, the cover that goes on top of the chip tray may need removed as the chip tray swells when it's hot and snags on the top of the chip tray opening. As long as your chunks are less than 2" thick they should lay flat enough in the tray to insert into the tray slot.
Answer: I would not feel comfortable trying to put chunks in this tray. I use the chips. Tray is pretty small and it fits tight in the smoker. If you overfill it’s, it seems like it would be a real struggle to pull out to refill when the tray has heated up.
Answer: The instructions tell you not too use them, however I have. I did have to cut some chunks smaller in order to fit them in as it is only about 2.5-3" deep of a tray. I will say that the chips still provide an amazing flavor and last pretty long. I primarily use chips in mine now because it is a hassle to cut chunks smaller.
Answer: The smoker tray works well, but can only accomodate wood chips - certainly not large enough for chunks of wood.
Answer: The chip tray is designed for chips. It slides through a 11/2+ inch opening.
Answer: made more for chips not chunks
Q:
Can wheels be added to base
Answer: It has wheels on the back legs, just tilt it back and push or pull it where you want it to go.
Answer: There are pre installed wheels already on the back legs of the smoker, it's super easy to move around.
Answer: It has wheels on back you can tip and move.
Answer: There are wheels on the back legs already.
Answer: 2 of the legs already have roller wheels on them. The other side of the pit boss smoker has a handle so that you can lean it over and push or pull like a dolly
Answer: Any Modifications Will Be Upto The User
Answer: No
Q:
can this be used with natuarl gas line?

Answer: Not without an orifice change. I only use a 20lb. LP tank.

Answer: No
Answer: No

Answer: 12"Deep X 143/4" Wide
Q:
What all comes with this gas smoker
Answer: The smoker comes with the smoking box, three racks, a water pan, wood chip pan, grease pan, and some basic recipes.
Answer: Only the 3 racks that fit inside. There is a temperature gage on the door but you're better off buying an oven thermometer to place inside. I'd also recommend buying a cover, mat, and temperature probe for your meats. And you'll need a propane tank.
Answer: Everything you need except wood chips and propane tank.
Answer: It’s more like an oven , Chips don’t last long if your looking for a constant smoke from wood chips
Answer: Everything you need to start smoking exempt the lp tank.
Answer: Everything you see except the propane tank
Q:
Natural gas option ?
Answer: This doesn't come with an alternative burner and air/fuel mix tube for natural gas. I don't believe the manufacturer offers a part for that either.
Answer: Propane only
Q:
Does this come with a cover? If not, which cover demensions should work?
Answer: comes with nice form fitting cover
Q:
Is this propane fueled? Will it take the small propane tanks?
Answer: you would need an adapter to use the small tanks. It wouldn't be worth the effort/price..get a 15 lb tank. If you grill regularly, I would have two.
Q:
Can you use the smoker with propane and natural gas
Answer: From personal experience, these gasses mix differently when used with the valve supplied. Typically, you would have to get a valve assembly designed to oxygenate the natural gas as it is not quite the same as propane to get a proper burn. It's like buying a natural gas stove for you're house but running it on propane. Some minor things need changed.
Answer: Propane yes... natural gas I’m not sure
Q:
Can you use hardwood pellets as the wood source?
Answer: The answer is no. Only can use chips of various hardwoods.
Q:
Will a full rack rib fit
Answer: yes. pending on size you may have to hang them. I did 2 racks last weekend but split in half and used 2 levels for all 4 sections
Answer: If you layer them on different racks and switch them 1/2 way done, the juices make them juicy.
Answer: Several
Q:
Is this smoker red?
Answer: The front is red that has the glass door. The rest of the smoker is black.
Answer: Black and red
Answer: Yes ! This is red with black.
Answer: The picture represents the actual product. Red door.
Answer: Yep. Exactly as pictured. We have used it many times to make ribs, steak, duck, and it has worked great.
Answer: Just the front
Answer: Yes it is and it works great.
Q:
What is the size/dimensions of the box the products ships in ? Also what is the weight ?
Answer: I'm just guessing about the weight, but think it's about 60 lbs. It comes completely disassembled, everything is packed within the upper box of the smoker. The legs, burner and chip drawer are all in the upper section. Dimensions of the smoker are roughly only one or two inches less than the shipping container.
Answer: This isn’t an answer to your question but this might help on your decision.
Q:
Is this double wall insulated
Answer: No, single wall
Answer: No...
Q:
Can I use natural gas with this smoker?
Answer: Yes...
Q:
Are the racks stainless steel?
Answer: They are porcelain coated steel and clean easily.
Q:
I don't see any handles to carry it, can some be installed?
Answer: There’s one on the back. And it has wheels so you can grab that handle, tilt it back on the wheels and role! And it’s relatively light.
Answer: There is one handle on the back that can be used to move it using the two wheels on the rear legs. However, it is not meant to be used to pick up the smoker to carry it. Overall the smoker is not very heavy and can be picked it up relatively easily.
Answer: There are wheels on the unit, why would you want to carry it.???
Answer: There a handle on the back that allows you to roll it.
Answer: Large handle on back of smoker.wheels on rear legs so it can be moved sort of Like a hand truck
Answer: with self tapping metal screws yes, but it is easy enough to lift.
Q:
What approximate size of a turkey will fit in this? 18lb? What is the largest turkey you have smoked in it?
Answer: I smoke smaller briskets for pulled bbq but you could get a larger turkey if you adjust the shelf...it would take a long time to cook tho. I smoke brisket for 4 to 5 hrs and finish in a crockpot.
Answer: Yes that would be about the largest turkey it would accommodate.
Answer: I havent smoked a turkey yet I think 18lbs is the max
Answer: I’ve smoked a 14 lb. it’s tight so the thighs are not quite done. I spatchcock it and separate the leg/thigh & put them in a different rack.
Q:
Is this model 77425 2-series or 77435 3-series red rock? the above listed description does not match the specs for this model!
Answer: Smaller version 2 series
Q:
can pellets be used with this?
Answer: Not as a heat source. As far as for the smoke flavor, it is way cheaper just to use the bags of chips from Wal-Mart or even Amazon. You can a bag of chips for a couple dollars and a 20# bag of pellets is about $20
Answer: your not supposed to but i did i mixed with wood chips and it turned out fine.
Answer: No
Q:
Shipping to Israel?
Answer: sure
Q:
Does this work with a standard 20 lbs propane tank?
Answer: Yes
Q:
Has anyone run this on natural gas?
Answer: We just use bottled gas
Answer: Not approved! Propane only !
Q:
Can this run off natural gas not propane
Answer: You would have to convert it but after yes you can talk to your gas company
Answer: It is made for propane. Norma sure if you could add a converter???
Q:
What are the internal dimensions of this smoker?
Answer: 15 1/2 inches wide, 12 inches deep and about 19inches tall but would need to allow an inch or two for bottom shelf to fit above water pan.
Q:
There is a different if I am using gas and not propane?
Answer: Propane has 2.5 times more btu's per cubic foot than natural gas. The heat output will be 2.5 times lower.
Answer: Propane tank is what you use
Answer: I am not clear about the question, but my smoker only runs on lpg propane.
Q:
What is the warranty?
Answer: 5 years- I utilized it on mine in the first 6 months and couldn’t be happier with the response and ease of getting it taken care of.
Q:
What are the inside dimensions of the smoker ?
Answer: 15 1/2 wide 12 inches deep and 19 inches tall but usable height is more like 17 or 18....need to allow for bottom shelf to fit above water pan.
Q:
Can I use natural gas?
Answer: don't think so, I use propane tank from grill...I have two tanks in case I run out...can finish cooking w/out going for tank exchange.
Q:
Is this big enough for a turkey?
Answer: Yes just take out one of the racks
Product reviews of PIT BOSS 77425 2.5 Gas Smoker
Scorpiodrummer74 : Does what its supposed to do...
Easy to use. Food comes out great.
Amazon Customer : Everything fit fine. Did some modifying the two heat vents
Just received mine, had it together in about an hour. Everything fit fine. Did some modifying to the two heat vents, the tabs don’t allow the vents to close all the way so I bent them so they would. I’m also going to put some high heat sealer around the inside top of the cook chamber to seal it up. Other than that looks like a well made smoker.
Jennifer : Easy for first timers!!!!!!
I bought this for Father’s Day & I did some research on a bunch of different kinds of smokers. This one rated the highest for people that have never smoked before (that’s us) super easy to use,you don’t have to sit & watch it for hrs. This smoker heats up quick & is very accurate with temperatures for cooking. My hubby has smoked some really good food for us. Not to expensive, not the cheapest either. We have loved it.
R. Peter Crivellaro : Decent little smoker for the price.
This smoker is quite nice for the money. Assembly was less than an hour. No pieces were missing. One of the nicest and most unexpected features were the handle on the rear exterior face and wheels built in to the rear legs making it very easy to move.
Temperature control is achieved by a 3 way dial knob that allows you to "cold" smoke, apply medium heat and smoke simultaneously or high heat and smoke together. Any variance you may want in making accurate adjustments relies on two vents in the back. So this is NOT a smoker you'd want to leave unattended more than 15 minutes at a time.
The big complaint I do have is the fit of the wood chip drawer. It fits great when cool. But once up to temperature, the chip drawer swells vertically causing the top plate on the drawer to scrape very hard against the top opening that receives that drawer. The manufacturer really should consider raising the opening another 1/8" to allow for this swelling to avoid eventually damaging the finish to the chip tray cover and underside of the chip tray portal.
The burner that heats the chips is about 1/2" too close to the chip tray causing the chips to burn if not thoroughly soaked. I'm talking a good 30 minute soak to the wood. Or else they WILL eventually catch on fire and cause your smoker temperature to jump up drastically.
Overall, it's good for the price.
These minor trouble areas are tolerable but the manufacturer really should be taking steps to improve these things.
If you're looking for easy to use or fire-up & walk-away for 3hrs...this is not a smoker for you.
Eric : 2 years now and still smoking
bought this couple of years ago..and now I look back and wow..great deal...good little smoker.
This month I made Marlin smoked and Ahi(tuna) and the report is came out good!
I made some smoked meats too..
this smoker is easy to use..and easy to clean..
I just shoot it with Krud Kutter degreaser cleaner..then hose it off..do it again..with the KK and hose..and little wipe here and there..clean..the porcelain painted racks come clean really easy. The inside paint cleans easily..and the outside is looking good..I did purchase an oversized bbq cover for it...it is stored in a car port in Hawaii..and so far no rust..
I would buy again..I think I was a black friday or July Amazon day purchase so I paid a better price then what it sells for now..but compare to the others..its the best deal out there.
tracy bobier : Great product
Easy to assemble looks like good quality, I would recommend..
Rafterman : Very good
Awesome. Exactly what I ordered.
Kim B. : Buy this one, you'll love it!
Absolutely love this smoker! Was easy to assemble, keeps temperature (and to my surprise the thermometer on the door is pretty accurate), and is a breeze to clean with a magic eraser. Definitely recommend this to anyone looking to try their hand at smoking!
Loren : Low cost way to add smoked meats or seafood to the table.
We had a bit of a temperature issue at first, could not get the temp up to required level. After a conversation with a very helpful lady at Pit Boss who spent nearly an hour working through the heating and burner. It now comes right up and is easy to control. I can see the thermometer from inside of the house so it's easy to get the temp right. You need to try a corned beef on a smoker.
shahar greenberg : It’s cheap
So so
Amazon Customer : Not what I expected.
The smoker was not the smoker that was listed in the advertisement. This one is much smaller. It took about an hour to assemble. It is hard to light. It has no markings for heat on the knob, high, low light. The wood tray is too shallow and bad design. It is hard to fill when hot.
Achevylifer@comcast : Uses
Works great in the summer or above 60 degrees otherwise it will not reach a high enough temp so its strictly a fair weather unit but works perfect in the good weather.
Louis A. Mingacci Jr. : First time usage
Delivered to me Friday evening. We had a gathering at my neighbors Saturday so the timing was close for smoking ribs. I picked up a coated pan from Walmart for $1.25 to use as a drip pan. I'm glad I did. Temperature control is a bit tricky on this unit. I finally stabilized it to around 225 F. I smoked the ribs for 3 hours than pulled them brushed on the sauce wrapped them in foil (tightly)than set in the oven at 200F for an hour. The ribs were awesome!! On a side note: Temp drops fast when opening the doors to add meats. An extra rack would be nice.
erin davidson : Wrong size in description
Seems like a nice smoker. The description says 800 Sq In cooking but I got a 526 Sq in this description goes with model 77435 thats the newer 3 series.

Anthony R. Phillips : Gets the job done efficiently
I had some money left over from my Black Friday budget and decided to order this smoker which had been on my wish list for about a couple of months. My biggest attraction to this particular model was the fact that it had a view window in it's price range. When the smoker was delivered about a week later I must say that it was a little smaller than I expected and assembling it was bit more complicated because there were a lot more smaller pieces to put together than on some other smokers I have assembled. The parts are of fine quality though and after about 2 1/2 hours my new smoker was ready to go. The first time out I smoked a 10 lb salmon using one of my tried and true recipes. The pluses were that the smaller cooking area heated up faster; with the window there was no need to open the door to get a peek at how the fish was cooking which made for a much shorter cooking time, and this smoker was very easy to clean up afterwards. The one minus was that the salmon took up all of the available cooking area so there was no room to add anything else, so if you are planning to cook for a large get-together you would probably need 2 of these smokers.
In the end I must say that the salmon came out absolutely delicious, probably my personal best result and I have smoked salmon for a few years now and have a long track record for comparison. I would definitely recommend this smoker for the more frequent smaller jobs. If you are not mechanically inclined you would probably want to invest in the professional assembly because you are required to assemble the gas burner with this product which I don't recommend a novice to attempt.
Smoker Boss : Amazing smoker!
This is our first smoker, but we have already used it multiple times in the last 3 weeks. The food comes out so amazing! It is very easy to maintain the temperature needed for hours as well!
bigJoe69 : BUYER BEWARE
COMPANY DOESN'T STAND BEHIND THE PRODUCT .... I CALLED 3 TIMES AND MADE 2 WARRANTY REQUESTS THROUGH WEBSITE OVER 3 A WEEK PERIOD FOR BROKEN PARTS AND NO RESPONSE TO EITHER .. HARD TO MANAGE HEAT IF ANY WIND OVER 1 MPH UNLESS YOU HAVE A ENCLOSED PORCH,, PRODUCT WORKS AND IS CHEAPER TO RUN ON PROPANE THAN MY ELECTRIC ONES SIMILAR RESULTS BUT I THOUGHT THEY WOULD AT LEAST STAND BEHIND A NEW UNIT
erin davidson : Wrong size in description

Catherine Marello : It works great smoking the fish we catch at the lake.
It works great, but there were a lot of parts to put together. Assembly took me most of a day.
Samuel : Perfect size
Assembling was a little complicated. Gifted this for my dad but we have used it a couple times it’s great. Perfect size

Jess M. : Good product, but packaging- not the best
I got this as a gift for my boyfriend for Christmas. He used it once so far, and it seemed to have worked really well. The only negative thing I could say about it so far is the packaging. There is a dent on the back side near the bottom of the smoker. Also, the box it was delivered in had a picture of the smoker on all 4 sides of it, so it was not very discreet. Otherwise, the product itself seems like a nice product.
mem : Why would your company send this out?
Product had a large scratch on it, which was covered up by black marker. So apparently not new? Or a return? Two stars due to scratch.
Josh Cabaniss : Lots of smaller issues subtract from the whole.
Received this and after 3 hours of assembly the knob would not fit on the shaft, the starter did not work, and the chip tray kept getting stuck. Then I lit it and smoke and heat was pouring out of the bottom as much as the top. Not efficient. I am in the process of returning this one.
Mark P. Rosney : Does not hold temperature.
I've had a Pit Boss smoker for one year and used it about 6 times. It does not hold temperature. If you get this smoker, you'll be constantly adjusting the propane knob up and down. I'm talking about every 2-5 minutes the entire time in use.
Journeyman : Mostly good
My first smoker and overall happy with it. Hard to get a precise temperature and the chip tray gets stuck on mine like most people’s but I plan to just grind the metal a little to fix that. I’ve smoke dozens of pounds of salmon and a couple briskets and pork shoulders. I like it. That being said I will probably buy a pellet grill soon to take care of longer set and forget smokes because with this one you need to be constantly adjusting the temperature and wood and water levels. Plan to keep it around though. Still see a niche for it. Be careful Not to let your chips flame up. Use tinfoil over the chips to help reduce flame ups. That produces creosote which will ruin the taste of your meat. Best chips I found is jack Daniels whiskey barrel chips. Flame up less and no bark
Joe : Great smoker don’t trust the built in thermometer.
A great upgrade from my old Weber charcoal smoker. So far I’ve smoked salmon filet, chicken thighs, and pork belly. All came out perfect.
The reason my review is not 5 stars, it is difficult to adjust the temperature to maintain a consistent temp. I find it easier and to just set it and leave it at mediums to low setting and leaving it. The temp does vary I have a four probe remote temperature. When I naked off the paint for the initial had them thermometer in the smoker at the center with another Rubbermaid oven thermometer. The pot boss thermometer was consistent with the other thermometers until 250 degrees f. Then it just stayed ar that temp whole o cranked it up to high. It settled about 326 degrees according to the probe and Rubbermaid. But the Pitt boss thermometer indicated about 285 or so.
Michael Hubbard : Quality Problems
I assembled this model for a customer and was disappointed with the quality. One of the burners did not work, a fastener in the door broke requiring the door be replaced and the chip box got hopelessly stuck. Pit Boss came through with new parts but no product should have this many problems.
Da Vinci Man : Great smoker!
Bought this for a neighbor as a thank you gift and they love it. The only problem I had was that I bought pellets to go with it, and they don't work, you need to get chips; my bad.
shahar greenberg : It’s cheap
So so
Amazon Customer : great smoker!
best little smoker I've seen. get the cover too! it's first rate
Stra : A Few Significant Design Flaws - Otherwise OK
I’ve used this smoker about 20 times so far and have the following issues.
The chip box expands when it gets hot and the metal expansion causes it to get stuck in place. This is more than just an inconvenience as you have to really yank it out quite hard and it scrapes against the main box.
Also, the water pan only holds enough water for about 3 hours at 200-250F. Ideally you’d like to be able to smoke something overnight without getting up twice in the middle of the night.
The heat control knob (aka gas flow control) is very touchy. The difference between 200 F and 300 F is probably less than 1/10th of a turn on the scale. (Obviously this depends on your outdoor conditions and vent settings but I have found that vent settings don’t help that much.)
Smoker door doesn’t seal at the corners, even after adjusting the closing mechanism multiple times. Not a huge deal but annoying.
On the plus side, if you can deal with all of those issues and babysit it, I’ve been able to make good pork shoulder, ribs, wings, and brisket so not all is lost.
(I also overpaid as I bought it when it was listed at $229.) :/
shopaholic2 : My product was damage. Already assembled when I saw the damage, was too late to return
I like the price and the temperature control. I dislike the Assembling of product and the damage on product
Journeyman : Mostly good

That being said I will probably buy a pellet grill soon to take care of longer set and forget smokes because with this one you need to be constantly adjusting the temperature and wood and water levels. Plan to keep it around though. Still see a niche for it. Be careful Not to let your chips flame up. Use tinfoil over the chips to help reduce flame ups. That produces creosote which will ruin the taste of your meat. Best chips I found is jack Daniels whiskey barrel chips. Flame up less and no bark
