Questions about Calamus Fishing Fillet Knife And Bait Knives, German G4116 Stainless-Steel Blades with Corrosion Resistant Coating, Non-Slip Handles, Protective Nylon Sheath, Perfect For Fresh Or Saltwater.
Q:
Does it float?
Answer: No, it will not float on water.
Answer: Not sure, keep it on the shore.
Q:
What type of sharpening stone you recommend for this German blade?
Answer: I use workmate belt sander for knives on all my kitchen hunting and fishing. That’s what I do ????
Q:
Is it dishwasher safe?
Answer: you should NEVER put a knife in the dishwasher.
Answer: I'm not sure----I only hand wash. I expect that it is ok for dishwasher
Answer: Yes it is. Top rack though.
Answer: Yes
Q:
is the serrated back of the bait knife for scaling?
Answer: Yes, you can use the serrated back for scaling but there are also many other uses for this feature. One is for cutting frozen bait. The serrations make cutting frozen bait much easier. It is also very effective for cutting bone and also things like rope or cord.
Q:
I’m a novice that catches salt n fresh of all sizes. Would 9” be too clunky?
Answer: Not at all. It is very flexible and actually works better and allows you to feel for where you are making your cuts. We don’t catch large fish and this even works well on that. Favorite knife I’ve purchased for filleting fish.
Answer: I find the knife easier to handle AND more importantly see where the blade is moving during fillet.
Q:
Is the 9" fillet the total length or just the length of the blade?
Answer: The blade length is 9 inches, if you include the handle it's approximately 15 inches total.
Answer: It is the blade length
Answer: It is the length of the blade
Answer: Length of the blade
Q:
Who is the manufacturer of this knife? i’ve heard that this is made by kastking. is that correct?
Answer: Not sure who makes this knife, but I’m not to impressed with its performance, does not stay sharp, I like my 35 year old Rapala better.
Answer: Calamus was hatched as an Eposeidon incubator program for revolutionary ideas. Out of the box thinking was applied to fishing tackle to create spectacular, more efficient products.
Q:
where is knife made ?
Answer: The box says made in China
Answer: It’s a US company.
Q:
What is the blade sharpening angle?
Answer: Not sure of the angle. I use a Lasko box sharpener with 2 different angles built in and use the instructions recommended angle for outdoor knives and it works really well. I follow it up with a leather strop.
Q:
How well does this knife maintain its sharp edge?
Answer: Holds an edge very well. Blade is very ridged. Not much flex
Answer: Not well at all, my 35 year old Rapala holds a better edge.
Answer: Needs to be sharpened often especially on Walleye and bass
Q:
Why dont i have the option for the 7" blade?
Answer: There are 7” blades out there
Q:
I can only see 5” & 9” fillet knife. Is there no 7” for sale?
Answer: The 7" Fillet Knife is available now.
Q:
How does it stand up to salt water?
Answer: It don’t stand. It lays down.
Product reviews of Calamus Fishing Fillet Knife And Bait Knives, German G4116 Stainless-Steel Blades with Corrosion Resistant Coating, Non-Slip Handles, Protective Nylon Sheath, Perfect For Fresh Or Saltwater.
Irvin Rivera : Very sharp knife
I take my kids fishing all the time and we needed a fillet knife and this happens to be exactly what we needed. It is very sharp and flexible. You can’t beat the price for the quality of the product. It is a MUST BUY! Go with the 7inch medium fish. Like Spanish mackerel or even jack fish.
Piquant : Nice mid-sized fillet knife for any fisherman.
I received this the day before a Lingcod/Rockfishing trip so it was a perfect test. Handled a couple dozen west coast rockfish, start to finish, right on the boat with no problems and no resharpening. Impressive being that these fish have some tough armor and skin to get through. The blade was flexible enough to get even the smallest fillet cleanly off the skin. The black plastic handle is covered with a grey and blue rubber wrap that is very snug, stays in place, and retains good grip when in use. I will probably put a bead of marine silicone where the wrap is sewn together just for piece of mind, but so far no problems. The sheath is a nylon "cage" style that is similar to other knives I have, but this one is vented/caged on both sides, allowing for the blade to completely dry out, whether its dirty or not. Mine was dirty when put away, but cleaned up quickly the next day with ease. It performed exactly as it should and is priced right, as a primary knife, an addition to a set, or an extra for boats or tackle boxes.
Kindle Customer : great
great
Amazon Customer : Fish
Worked like a Champ on multiple fish, still has a nice edge
cory : Good knife comfortable handle
Great knife! Just the right amount of flex for cutting big slabs of fish.
Kindle Customer : Will due
Not as fixable as I would like. But nice and sharp.
Taylor : Excellent value with great results
This knife is perfect for cleaning big fish such as bull mahi and wahoo. The flexible blade really allows you to hug the spine while taking off the filets and also allows fine adjustments to get as much meat as you can. Removing blood lines and pin bones are both simple task as well. A great knife.
This Guy and his Wife : Great knife held its edge filleting 20+ catfish
I fish alot and it's hard to keep a knife that is sharp over a week I'm a month in without having to sharpen so happy with this purchase highly recommend
Gerardtb : Great bait knife.
Been using it for a few months now. Super sharp and works great! Mainly used for cutting bunker and saltwater fishing.
Don't hesitate to buy!
MD : Junk
A lot of fake reviews on this product but it is junk. Halfway thru cleaning the first fish it dulled up and had to get another knife to finish the job. Save your money.
Wild Bill : Good buy for a boat or cleaning table
Holds an edge good if you keep it out of big bones, doesn’t rust, handle is good even when wet.
Trusted Buyer : Sharp Sharp Sharp!!!
These knives was just what I was looking for.. Very sharp, Good, Comfortable Grip, and enough flex to get the job done. These fillet knives and good on small, medium, and yes, even the BIG fish. ..and they stay sharp even after filleting over 20 fish. Keeps a good edge.
Amazon Customer : Happy Fisherman
Bought this knife and the bait knife for hubby and he is very pleased. He likes the balance. He says they are nice and sharp!
Paco : Not sharp and will not sharpen
Not sharp, even after using sharpener, my old metal knife with plastic handle worked 10x better. Regret buying this
Andrew Postolnikov : Absolutely awesome knife
Absolutely love the knife. Makes a great addition to my kastking fillet knives. The blade has the perfect flex. The steel keeps its edge nicely. And the handle is truly something else. They sewed on some kindly of rubber silicone layer onto there and it gives the perfect grip. Couldn't have asked for a better knife. And to think it's only $20. Wow....this is y kastking is the best fishing brand out there. They just keep proving themselves
Ricky : Great product for the value!
Great value for the cost. The steel is super sharp and should last. Will try other sizes and combinations.
Only reason for 4 not 5 is due to the grip is a sewn together material which might tear after much use - will put it to the test.
Jeremy Cyprych : It'll do the trick
Seems like a quality knife for the price. It should do the job. Only thing I'm disappointed about is the way they presented the picture of what it included because I thought that was a sharpening block not the box it comes in :/
ChrisB : Love this Fillet Knife
My husband wanted to get me my own fillet knife for our fishing camp, he researched several and this was the best for the money. I love the ergonomic handle and the way the blade holds an edge. Now that we have it, I find my husband using it instead of his buck fillet knife!
Woz : Easily worth double the price!
This is by far my most favorite filet knife I have ever used. Super sharp blade, firm but flexible, and the grip is absolutely perfect. The plastic sheath is durable, clicks on firmly and allows for easy rinsing with its design. No more stinky knife sheaths. I'll definitely be buying more of these.
JM : Good quality knife
The funny part of receiving this knife today is that we went fishing and caught a bunch of fish. Pompano and whiting. When we returned home the knife was in the mailbox. Talk about perfect timing.
Anyhow the knife is of great quality. It is very sharp and flexible like a fillet knife should be. Made filleting the fish very easy.
For the quality of the knife the price was very reasonable.
cory : Good knife comfortable handle
Great knife! Just the right amount of flex for cutting big slabs of fish.
Jake : Great knife for the price
This fillet knife is very well made. I was impressed at the quality compared to the low price. The teflon coating will come in handy with cleaning and durability. The rubber handle feels great in the hand and helps keep your grip even with fish slime. I have quite a few KastKing products and this is yet another one that doesn't disappoint.
Jeffrey Matthews : Great Knife for the Price
This knife has performed well in every way that I have used it. It has the strength to cut completely frozen bait fish but also the dexterity to trim filets for final preparation. Very good knife and a great value!
Tom : Love it
Great quality
Mrs Parker : Buy cut resistant gloves it’s SHARP!
Super sharp. Grab the cut resistant gloves and make sure to have them on before opening knife. Do not let kiddos around it. Husband sliced his ring finger to the bone within 30 seconds of opening it. Spent a night in the ER.
Alyssa Falcon : Well made, comfortable.
Comfortable handle with good grip, semi stiff blade but adequate flex for filleting fish cleanly. Works perfect on larger fish where my 4" and 5" filet knife came up short. Look forward to using it more on the water this season.
Christopher Joyce : . Great knife.
Great knife. Needed a new edge on it out of the package but so do all the expensive ones. Filleted about 100 fish first time out. Worked great. Stayed sharp. The grip on it is great. Very happy with this purchase. Will deffinitely be ordering more knives from this brand.
3dDave : My new go to fish knife
This knife does all the work. Very sharp out of the box. Had no problem with multiple filets after a days fishing. The handle has great grip for when things get slippery it does not slide out of your hand like some wood handles. The blade is long and flexible enough to make those cuts around fish bones.
Thank Goodness : Good Quality for the Price
I've used several filet knives, but haven't found the one that feels the most comfortable. I fish a lot on the west coast and need a knife that can handle anything from trout to big blue fin tuna. This knife is super sharp. Feels good in the hand, and impresses me overall for value for the price I paid. I'm looking forward to using this on future catches and see how durable it is and how long the edge lasts.
James Muskelly : Great fillet knife
Just as a update on this knife I have filleted many stripers and catfish so far and it has performed with no issues. If I had to buy this knife again I would in a heartbeat with out hesitation.
Alyssa Falcon : Well made, comfortable.
Comfortable handle with good grip, semi stiff blade but adequate flex for filleting fish cleanly. Works perfect on larger fish where my 4" and 5" filet knife came up short. Look forward to using it more on the water this season.
pennycandy : A super value Fishing Knife
The blade has the perfect flex. The steel keeps its edge nicely.
The cushioned grip is comfortable and slip-resistant
Great price all for the quality you get.
I would highly recommend this filet knife
Kastking is a great fishing brand.
James Muskelly : Great fillet knife
Just as a update on this knife I have filleted many stripers and catfish so far and it has performed with no issues. If I had to buy this knife again I would in a heartbeat with out hesitation.
Jesus M Rodriguez : Phenomenal & A-Must to have!!!
Fantastic knife! Be EXTREMELY careful. Just touching the blade and you are cut.
Moyshe oofnik : knife sucks, cant even cut thru a planter trout..
im catching bigger fish more often and i wanted a bigger knife to work with. i was familiar with this brand already so i thought it was a safe bet. this knife is so dull and it wont hold an edge long at all. out of the box this would not cut thru a planter trout form the local lake. after sharpening it seemed fine, but the next few times i used it the blade went dull again. this is trash. i bought a morakniv fixed blade knife for half the price of this an it works 1000x better.
Rachel : Phenomenal knife!
This is an outstanding knife! I purchased the 9” blade for filleting larger fish. Blade has just the right amount of flexibility and stays sharp! The handle has a great feel and won’t slip out of your hand. I’m extremely pleased with this knife
Geirsen : Decent blade for the price
I just had a chance to use this knife for the first time yesterday. Cuts well and the 9" blade is a decent shape and size for 10-20lb fish. The knife could be a bit sharper, but nothing a proper fillet knife sharpener can't fix. The handle has plenty of grip and does not slip from your hand, even when covered in fish juices.
I definitely recommend this as a first fillet knife for someone who is a bit more budget-conscious.
Jeremy Cyprych : It'll do the trick
Seems like a quality knife for the price. It should do the job. Only thing I'm disappointed about is the way they presented the picture of what it included because I thought that was a sharpening block not the box it comes in :/
SA : Great knife
Purchased this knife for my recent fishing trip and let me tell you, I highly rate this knife. Out off the box I fileted 4 large red snapper and as dozen vermillion and the knife worked like a champ. I was thinking of getting that other brand (bb) for $50 bucks and sure glad I Purchased this one for 60% less. Going to purchase a few more for Father's day gifts. Purchased and additional 5 knives for Father's Day presents.
Corina : Quality knife
Knife came as advertised-- good value, comfortable, seems durable but haven't used yet
Clay O. : Nice knife
While I haven’t had the chance to fillet a fish with it yet, it certainly proved it’s worth already having tasked it with carving this years Christmas turkey :). Performed nicely, came nice and sharp right out of the box.
MD : Junk
A lot of fake reviews on this product but it is junk. Halfway thru cleaning the first fish it dulled up and had to get another knife to finish the job. Save your money.
Thank Goodness : Good Quality for the Price

Amazon Customer : Fish
Worked like a Champ on multiple fish, still has a nice edge
HW : AMAZING
Comfortable grip, weight is just right (not light, but far from heavy), sharp blade, tip is very small. Overall, great for fish filet. The thin blade and small tip allow for smooth cuts. Plus, the beautiful blue color is spot on. Highly recommend!
Ricky : Great product for the value!
Great value for the cost. The steel is super sharp and should last. Will try other sizes and combinations.
Only reason for 4 not 5 is due to the grip is a sewn together material which might tear after much use - will put it to the test.
M. Thompson : Sharp filet knife!
Just purchased this for my husbands fishing trip. It has been used on 3 occasions to filet fish in their trip for dinners. They said it’s performing very well and remaining sharp. So much so that one of the guys sliced through his thumb with thus knife. I’ll update if I notice they start complaining about the blade not holding up. Very glad it came with a protective cover.
Update 11/27/20. My husband still prefers this knife when filleting fish. Sharpness has helped up. He does like to use a smaller blade when removing the skin from the fillet. But we have 4 fillet knives and this is the one he grabs for doing our fish.. whether it’s bass, steelhead, Muskie..
Randy : Great knife and protective case for the price!
I was impressed with the Calamus fillet knife when it arrived. The grip for the knife fits my hand well and is rubber coated so it does not slip easily. The knife is sharp and ready to use. I like the simple protective case for the blade that snaps over the knife. It snaps on to stay in place and is washable versus other leather sheaths I have that you need to be more careful using and cleaning.
dillon : I am never disappointed!!!!!!
this knife seems a bit pricey for a fillet knife. It is not though. This company is amazing and the quality of every product is great. This knife cleaned a 33" pike amazingly. I do not think it is the knife for small fish but this company has smaller knives for that as well. Strongly recommend every product they sell.
