It says it fits up to a 12mm tape. How does it hold skinnier tapes steady?

Answer: So far we have only used 3/8 inch tape and it works great. I really don't know about the wider tapes.

Is there a way to shorten the amount of tape it uses on each piece?

Answer: No

Does this come with a roll of tape?

Answer: Nope!

Answer: No it does not.

we needed it for packaging wild game..it took a little geeting used to seealing the tape, but once we got the hang of it, we were good. we had to push the bag out to the front, not straight down
