Questions about Berkley BTDFS50-1 Digital Fish Scale, 50-Pound
Q:
what batteries?
Answer: the batteries I use for this scale are 2 each 2032 they are round batteries. they go in the back of the scale .
Answer: 2ea 2032
Answer: Sorry dear, it has been a long time since I bought this scale. I only remember that it froze up after one season and was useless. Same thing happened to a friend of mine. I do not recommend this scale!
Q:
Does anyone know how to change this scale from kg to lbs?
Answer: Power the scale on...then hold both buttons down at the same time for 5 seconds.
Answer: sorry no it was a gift
Q:
How water resistant is this scale?
Answer: Not much in water resistance. I used it for 6 months. After two trips in it getting wet from light rain it failed.
Answer: I would not buy one again. Mine "froze" up within a year as did one that my friend bought, each after very little usage or exposure. However, I must say that we only used them (the very few times that they were used) at the coast, not fresh water area. Still...NO.
Q:
Does this scale measure from 0 to 50 lbs?
Answer: This scale sucks. burns through watch batteries that power it. when you want to use it the batteries are dead....dead.....dead. buy Rapala RHCDS50 High Contrast Digital Scale, Black, 50 lbs. instead. uses triple AAA batteries. last forever. good scale.
Answer: Been a while since I had this scale. I do not know the range, but I do not recommend it for salt water use as I had problems of corrosion..
Answer: Yes it does. It’s capacity/range is printed right on the front face.
Answer: Yes, it does. I just tested it! Phew!
Answer: Yes but hard to use! Not happy with it.
Answer: Yes
Q:
what is the maximum weight range?
Answer: 50 pounds. Weighed a yellowfin on it last year, but it was only 36lbs.
Q:
dose it come with batteries?
Answer: not sure about batteries, but I need to tell you I have concerns about this weight device. They may have made improvements in the past 4 or 5 years, but my friend and I both had these freeze (rust up)! We do salt water fishing, did not abuse them, and in a year both were useless.
Answer: Yes, battery is already installed.
Answer: yes it does
Q:
My scale is blinking zero and will not weigh anything. What do I need to do to fix this?
Answer: Consider changing the battery.
Answer: have you tried changing the batteries? that would be my guess
Q:
Is there a protective case for this scale?
Answer: No.
Q:
Does this come in packaging and with a tape measure? If so, does anyone have a photo of the package?
Answer: Mine came in a package - but NO tape measure.
Answer: no tape measure
Answer: The tape measure is built into the scale
Q:
How do you zero the memory
Answer: This product is difficult to use, I would not buy it again or recommend it!!!
Answer: sorry, I can't help you with this. I bought the device many years ago and it failed me quickly, so I have little experience.
Q:
how do you clear the memory on this scale?
Answer: I did not have good luck with this scales !
Q:
Where is this made?
Answer: It's made in China. I'm not real happy with this scale. The weigh hook is too small. The scale is designed to used by tournament anglers, but you had better be prepaired to study the manual, as it is not an easy scale to use. I don't tournament fish so I don't need to keep track of my five best bass. All I need is a scale that can quickly weigh the bass, so I can put it back in the water. This scale ain't that.
Answer: Probably China where everything else is made
Answer: Spirit lake Iowa
Q:
Will it weigh in 0.01Lb?
Answer: It is not as good as anticipated. I had problems weighing any fish and it is very inconsistent.
Answer: Yes it does, kg or lbs 0.0
Answer: Sorry, 00.0
Q:
will it corrode from being around saltwater
Answer: I'm not having a problem with my scale in salt water. I just weighed a 27 lb yellowtail with it last week. Although I will say that it doesn't get all that wet and I wipe it down after every use.
Answer: I really doubt it will. the battery compartment is sealed with a rubber gasket. As long as you not drop it over and over onto the deck it should survive pretty easily around both salt water and fresh water environments. I have this model and use it quite extensively during the cooler months of the year fishing in rainy weather.
Answer: YES!!! Both the one I bought and the one my friend bought were FROZEN solid (rusted tight) after one season of fishing.
Answer: It shouldn't if you rinse it with fresh water after every use. However, eventually, in a few years, I believe it will.
Product reviews of Berkley BTDFS50-1 Digital Fish Scale, 50-Pound
Keith D. : Small and lightweight for handling
Berkeley scale works good for the big fish. Easy to read
Ltan : Nice scale.
The handle is big enough to comfortably hold up a 30lb fish. The hook is also big enough to not slip off a big fish.
edt1gto : 50# berkley scale
Bought as a gift for friend, but have seen this in use before. scale is acurate and easy to use, can be used for fish or other weight checks.
Richard Laycock : Chinese Junk
This is an easy to use, functionally designed piece of cheap Chinese trash. I fly fish but I bought this scale to weigh flakes of hay. It got used maybe three times a week to measure a flake or two from new bales. Then it was hung in the tack room until next time. Easy use, good care, no mud, no water, no salt. Before eight months had gone by it simply stopped working.
I usually avoid Chinese products because I know they're junk. Anyone who has put Chinese Stn. Stl. on an ocean craft knows what trash they make. I waved it off this time because it seemed to fit the bill and "how could they screw up such a simple tool?"
Trash. I've bought my last Berkeley product.

Jamie Johnson : Good scales
Works well weights in pounds and oz,s and not to big bulky
Farmchick : Great Fishing Tool
Made a great gift for a grandson whose passion is fishing.
Joanne Masters : Does what it does.
The product itself is designed well and has stood up against the big fish i have put on it.The only problem is the hook it does not stay well in a fishes mouth so i put a fish clamp on it and it works perfect now.
Ollie S. : These are a good set of scales that have served me well over ...
These are a good set of scales that have served me well over the last three years - and I'm still on the same battery.
They provide measurements in both LB and KG and there is also a memory function (that I confess I don't use due to the buttons being confusing when it comes to this feature). It does "hold" the weight once the scales settle which is a nice feature but not unique as most scales do this.
I've given this 4/5 stars because there are a few negatives, firstly that whilst the hook does have a rubber attachment that means you can fold it into the main body, this doesn't fit flush. So when you pack the scale the hook often pops out. Secondly that the scales are not 100% accurate and at some weights can vary by 1oz (I've had these tested at the Tenchfishers General Meetings). Lastly, the menu system is a little confusing and as the buttons protrude from the body they can be pressed when packed into your bag - this was an irritation when I first owned them as it would change the units from LB to KG and I'd have to figure out how to change it which is not intuitive.
On the whole I'd recommend them, but a better buy in my opinion - and the scale I've just changed to - is the Korum Digital Scale which addresses all of the above negatives. However nothing is perfect, as this scale weighs 4oz/135g which is a lot lighter than the Korum scale which 9oz/260g and is also two thirds of the price (at the time of writing these were £19, the Korum were £35)
My main reason for the switch was that the hook didn't fit into the body, the rubber attachment on the hook seems to be an afterthought by Berkley (I've attached a photo to this review). This was irritating when trying to grab the scale out of my bag in a hurry with the hook catching on other items in the bag.
leadhead : Great Little Scale ! ! !
This is a great little scale that works well for the price and application ! The main issue with weighing fish in a rocking boat is the motion imparted to the fish by even the slightest wave action on the water plus the struggling of the fish itself. I use these scales to provide weights of fish I tag for the American Littoral Society. This scale has a "Hold" feature that helps with the motion issue and locks on a weight it believes is accurate. An H is displayed in the lower left hand corner of the scale window when Hold is achieved. While it would be difficult to confirm this lock or Hold weight in the boat, I have found that it is accurate to an ounce or two when I have performed simulation tests on dry land by raising and lower the scale with weight attached trying to recreate the up and down motion of the boat on the water. It is very accurate on land under static conditions. Haven't found anything comparable with other portable field scales.
Dan Brubaker : Works Well!
I use this and a receiving blanket to check my baby’s weight. Works well! It’s a little finicky if baby is kicking around a lot, but accurate enough.
Da Moogs : Worked great up until it didn't
I purchased this scale in 2011 and it worked flawlessly for me through two seasons. Unfortunately, this week the scale finally crapped out, it will not turn on and the only thing that displays on the screen is 88 88 which appears for a moment and then disappears. At first I thought it was just the batteries so I spent $7.50 on two replacement 2032s which of course didn't solve the problem. So now I'm stuck with batteries I can't use, can't return and must decide if I want to replace the scale with the same model or move to a different scale.
Marcus Leander Allen : Terrible
Terrible didn’t work when I got it
plug : good piece of kit
should come with bag for this price to stop it getting damaged in your tackle bag a minor point but valid one when paying
for quality kit otherwise would have given it a fifth star
George A. Shouse : Buyer beware
I bought this scale last year at this time. Since it was after fishing season, I didn't get it out to use until this fall. It was DEAD...as in D...E...A...D!! Ok, so it needs batteries..oh well, order new batteries. Didn't help...still D...E...A...D. My fishing buddy bought one also...come to find out, he had already thrown his away DEAD!!! (as in could not be revived) by the time I found out mine was D...E...A...D! He at least saved the cost of new batteries. My advice...do not buy this scale! Made in China! We need to stop buying stuff from China.
Shoua L. : Best bang for buck
Best bang for your buck scale.
Farmchick : Great Fishing Tool
Made a great gift for a grandson whose passion is fishing.
Ben M. : Accurate & Easy to use
Good value for money - easy to use (left the instructions at home but 30 seconds of fiddling and it was easy to use in either imperial or metric). A welcome addition to any tackle box.
zack : Works good but the automatic hold time is too fast you ...
Works good but the automatic hold time is too fast you have to reweigh a couple of times to get the right weight if the fish is flopping
Trent : Good scale
This is a good fish scale.
John Simon : Horrible
Used it once and the next time I went to use it it broke
Steve : It works
Light weight, stores away nicely
Ben2015 : You Should Buy!
GREAT SCALE. On point weight and always working m! I have had this scale for about a year and a halft and it has not died on me once.
Amazon Customer : accurate
Well made, easy to use, very accurate.
Wolfeman13 : Not Impressed
This scale is okay but not what I had hoped for. When you want to quickly weigh a fish so you can get it back into the water you need the scale to be really easy to use. This one requires some patience as you have to 'hold' the button for a bit too long to actually get the reading. It also takes a few seconds before the scale is ready to use. My other issue is the small size of the weigh-hook on the scale. I had trouble keeping the fish hooked up while I waited for the scale to make the reading. If you are a tournament angler you might like the feature that stores the weights, but I do not tournament fish so that isn't of much use to me.
Steve Wesson : great scale
I priced these scales at several retail stores before odering and the price on Amazon was a lot beter. These scales work real good and give a very accurate rfeading. I take the battery out when not in use so it doesn't corrode.
TheBlueAnura : Didn't seem to be accurate
Seems to be inaccurate

This is the replacement for the first one that did not work. This one has worked as it is described, light weight and an auto shut off.

Gary M. Brown : YEEHA!
I do fish but originally bought this while I was selling off my volumes of culinary books through Amazon. I placed the packaged book in a plastic grocery bag and conveniently hooked the handles on the scale. NEVER had a weight problem with my shipments. All my books are gone and my scale is now functioning as it was intended while retired in Florida. YEEHA!
William Prieto : good when it works.
Good little scale. I ordered two of these from two different sources. The one I received from Amazon did not work out of the package. I bought new batteries thinking that was the problem. I took out the old and put in the new ones and nothing....sent back to Amazon with the return authorization. Order it, you may get one that works.

Sugishop : Great for weighing fish and setting drag
Although I use this scale for weighing fish, I primarily have been using it for setting strike drag on my Avet reels. It's still a two man operation, but at least I know that my drags will be set properly.
I tested this scale with a variety of weights to verify it's accuracy and it was spot on right out of the packaging. I wasn't so sure that it would handle lighter weights (not sure why I thought that to begin with), but it worked just fine. I'll be using it next year for trout season too.
The scale itself is ergonomic and perfect for weighing things on the heavier end of the spectrum. I have been very pleased with the build quality and performance. I wasn't expecting a nice piece of equipment at such a good price.

Art Cowan : i was pretty sure i was catching much bigger and heavier fish!
not really sure if this works right...i was pretty sure i was catching much bigger and heavier fish! :)
mann4ducks : didn't work out of package
Purchased product new from Amazon, open it and would not even power up.
Coin batts. both read 3volts but nothing when you push either button. I hate products that don't even work first time out of package
Skyler Robinson : Good scale!
Yup. It gives an accurate weight!
Bonnie U. Gruenberg : One of my nurses has had one for many years and can only say good things about it
Midwives! This is the scale to get for home births. This one displays the weight in pounds and pounces, that is a baby is 8 pounds 8 ounces rather than 8.5 lb. One of my nurses has had one for many years and can only say good things about it. I bought three other scales before i found this one- this is the one for weighing babies.
FireRob : Until further testing 5 stars
Over all so far I'm impressed with the scale and can't complain. I have included several photos and will try to explain what I was trying to show you.
The battery compartment on the back of the scale is very easy to open with a coin, I used a quarter but don't see any coin not doing the job. I have no idea what the water resistance is supposed to be but was happy to see a quality O-ring built into the battery compartment door and since the door closed with what felt like a tight seal I'm optimistic that "when" I dump over in my kayak maybe it will survive (fingers crossed and I'll update as I gain more experience with this happening)
Attached to the hook is a soft white almost clear nub. I can only assume it's to help store the hook and it happens to fit perfectly in either of the screw holes on the back of the scale (see photo) there was no mention of this in the instructions (that I only scanned and did not read with a fine tooth comb) but this is what I did. Speaking of instructions the parts I did read over gave good detail on how to zero it out and store previous weights measured and how to use the simple two buttons on the front.
Accuracy: I used some lead fishing weights that I ordered in the same Amazon shipment to test the accuracy. It is 16 one ounce weights. The scale showed it to weight 15 ounces..... so either the scale is off by one ounce per pound or it's possible the weights are off by an average of 1/16 of an ounce per weight. At this time I don't know which one is the issue and won't reduce my rating until I can confirm and will give the scale the benefit of the doubt for the time being. I might do some more experiments with other items and will report back in a couple weeks.
I'm never going to catch a world record fish and won't be using this to certify any fish. I'll be using it when my kids want to know how much their bluegill or catfish weighs and to have bragging rights over their siblings. If the accuracy turns out to be off after more testing I'm ok with that but my rating will be changed to correct my findings.
Over all it gets my recommendation so far
Disclaimer: I payed full price and never get discounted or free stuff! Amazon you have my address on file if you want to change that...
Edit to add photos again. Amazon, What's the point if your not going to include them the first time I post a review?
Nicholas V Dello-Iacono : Broke First time using it
I was weighing a striped bass and the hook snapped off the first time i used it.. the fish was probably around 12-16lbs.
Jonathan B. : Don't waste your money on it
This fish scale didn't work once the batteries went dead. It lasted a year. I put new batteries in it and it still will not come on. Don't waste your money on it. Definitely buy something else. There are many reviews online that complain about the same thing.
