Questions about ENTSPORT Fish Lip Gripper Fish Scales Professional Fish Holder Stainless Steel Fish Lip Grabber 40 Pound Fish Lip Grip Tool with Weight Scale
Q:
Is there 2 units of measurement on the scale so that weight can be read in both pounds and kilograms?
Answer: Yes, but the scale that I received was off by over a pound (when measured with a 5 lb weight).
Answer: Yes, But I have not used it to see how accurate. I have an electronic one I will test it against.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Are these made in the usa with usa materials like the bogagrips?
Answer: Nope
Q:
How does this hold up when saltwater fishing?
Q:
Does this have rotating handle/head?
Answer: No
Answer: yes
Q:
what does the scale go to?
Answer: ruler to 30" scale 40#
Answer: 32-35lbs
Q:
Will this work fine with small fish like Bluegill?
Answer: Yes, It is a little over kill as it is usually used for fish w sharp teeth and strong jaws, but it will hold a pan fish like a bluegill.
Answer: Yes. But generally for fish 6 inches or more up to large pike, walleye, bass etc. Every fisherman/woman should have one in the tackle bob.
Q:
Does the scale need calibration?
Answer: The black knob on the back of the scale tightens and loosens the spring which changes how the scale reads. But even if you calibrate it at 1 wait it's wrong at another. It's a great gripper just not a good scale
Q:
What is the knob at the top for?
Answer: There is a knob to pull with two fingers that opens the grippers so you can grab the lip of the fish. They work very well. Just caught 120 pike today and used them for every fish.
Q:
In the ad, it is described as both 11.8 inches and 9.4. In the specifications, it is 9.6 inches. Which is it?
Answer: It’s exactly what the specs say 9.6 inches
Answer: 9.6 is the size
Answer: Not sure. I returned it because the scale was almost impossible to read.
Answer: 9.5"
Q:
Looking to land 40+ inch pike and drag into boat without net. once clipped is this thing super reliable? lost a monster due to lack of huge net.
Answer: I've pulled in 20 lb plus catfish with ease. It's a good gripper. The scale is wildly inaccurate though.
Answer: Yes. I caught a 40 inch muskie with it and held it by just the gripper.
Answer: I have done the same thing. It works, make sure you go thru the bottom lip, get the long handle one. They make short handle ones wouldn't recommend it.
Answer: I haven't gripped anything that big yet, but once the metal jaws are locked on, I don't see any fish getting away.
Answer: Heavy duty pulls in big cats no problem
Answer: Caught a keeper halibut out of the surf and it held with no problem
Q:
What country is this from?

Q:
Is the weight scale accurate across its range? Others of this type are not. Thanks.
Answer: No
Q:
How wide is the opening? I'm looking for a minimum of 1.5 inches opening. Thanks
Q:
How does this gripper hold up when saltwater fishing?
Answer: I would use it in salt water, it is stainless and seems well made but I only fish in fresh water.
Answer: I have used it a couple of times, but it did rust on me a little. I highly suggest, with any tool that you rinse it thoroughly after saltwater use, also do not put it away wet. Stainless or not.
Answer: Rusted up and is completely non-usable after 1 month of saltwater use. I rinse all of my tools with fresh water after each trip & it still rusted solid. Definitely not for saltwater use!
Answer: I used mine in saltwater and in two days it was unusable, the spring locked in the open position and the tape rusted and won't come out. Totally useless for saltwater!
Answer: Mine hangs from my waders and is submerged in saltwater for hours on end. The mechanism still works perfectly with no signs of rust, but I rinse with fresh water after every use which I'm sure makes all the difference.
Q:
Can the scale be calibrated for accuracy?
Answer: I don't know. I never tried to calibrate mine.
Answer: No
Q:
Will this gripper float?
Answer: No I’m afraid it will not float, as a matter of fact, this spring I lost one to the bottom of the lake when a large fish I was releasing twisted and pulled gripper out of my hand and I did not have the cinched tight on my wrist
Answer: No, it will not float. I suppose you could attach a float to it, but it weighs about 5-6 ounces.
Answer: No it wont that's why it has a wrist strap just put the strap around your wrist and you should be good to go !!!
Q:
Does it spin/rotate?
Answer: Yes it does and that helps with bigger fish , I've lipped 40" plus pike with it and it worked perfectly with the bottom of the grippers spinning when the big pike went crazy and the gripper still held the fish by the bottom lip !!!!
Q:
how lomg is the tape?
Answer: 36 inches
Q:
any idea if the igfa would approve this scale? would someone please reccomend a scale that they would approve? thanks x 100!
Answer: Is scale would definitely not be approved is not very accurate
Q:
Does it measure in ounces?
Answer: It does measure in partial pounds. Lije 1 14 etc. I do.not remember if it shows ounces however I think it does .
Answer: It measures in pounds. But it is not very accurate. I would recommend the lip gripper without a scale and get a second digital scale that would be much more accurate and you can measure in multiple different weights.
Answer: No
Q:
I fish Northern Pike and these fish often twist/spin when landing. Does this toll swivel 360 degrees?
Answer: Actually it doesn't swivel at all. If you want rotation , you could hold by the strap and let the whole tool rotate. My personal preference would be to not allow rotation. The grip is strong and would help in stabilizing the fish as much as possible. Anything is better than trying to get their teeth out of what's left of your net. I would think the Entsport Gripper would be your best solution.
Answer: I do not believe this swivels at all....
Q:
Does it have a scale
Answer: Yes, it has a scale as it says in the description. It is not real accurate, and it's a little difficult to read. The gripper itself is worth the price though.
Answer: Yes it does in the handle. Hadn't had it a month when I caught a 22lb. catfish and verified the weight when I got home. Would highly recommend.
Answer: Yes it’s engraved into the stainless steel and spring action. Works great!
Answer: Yes it does, you read it on the handle.
Answer: Yes Hard to read
Answer: yes
Q:
Looking for a humane way to catch and release pike yet avoid grabbing their gills. Will this product work or will it rip the jaw of larger pike?
Answer: I have not caught and released a pike but it should work fine. The product is rated to be used on big fish and toothy fish.
Answer: This is definitely the way to go . Put this around the tough edge of the lower lip. Ideally prevent the body from thrashing around and remove the hook/ lure. Very effective on large pike, bass, whatever. This should be in the tackle of very every person who fishes.
Answer: No problem we've released a 100 a day up to 46" with out any issue
Answer: It doesn’t rip the jaw, but it doesn’t work as scale.
Answer: I don't think it will work on a bigger fish, especially if you want to see the weight of the fish as well.
Q:
has anyone used this tool for gripping fish when you want to scale fish?
Answer: Yes. It holds a tight grip on thw fish. Don't get salt or sand in it. The fish weight scale kind of quits being accurate fairly quick but for a cheap fish grip I would buy it again.
Answer: It works used it in Canada, wish the handle was longer.
Q:
Can I use this to clip onto the fish then submerge it in the water to get ready for the picture? Will it damage the gripper?
Answer: I have gotten my gripper very wet many times and it still works fine. Although I have never submerged it but I think it will be fine.
Answer: Probably not. I had mine get rained on in my truck and still worked great. I wouldn't do it alot though.
Q:
Mine does not have the Entsport logo engraved on it as depicted in the pics?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Mine also does not have the logo. No matter, worked great last year and saved me having to grab fish by hand. Should have bought one of these long ago. Solid fishing tool.
Answer: I purchased this gripper and it fell apart during 1st use. Company was supposed to replace it and never did.
Q:
Does the head swivel
Answer: No, but make sure you have lanyard tight on wrist almost lost it on a big Northern
Answer: No & the revits came out out as well, they need a nut, bolt, lock washer where the rivits r.
Answer: No
Answer: No, it dosen't. Hope that helps.
Q:
Does it show weight in pounds or kilo?
Answer: This Fish Lip Gripper shows weight both in pounds and kilo.
Answer: Mine reads in both
Product reviews of ENTSPORT Fish Lip Gripper Fish Scales Professional Fish Holder Stainless Steel Fish Lip Grabber 40 Pound Fish Lip Grip Tool with Weight Scale
bob g. : Scale is unreadable
I imagined this would be serviceable as a fish gripper, but scale increments are small and hard to read if you’re the only person holding the gripper.
Lee Olsen : ... and figured at some point I would need something like this and after reading reviews decided to buy
I'm retired and fish a lot and figured at some point I would need something like this and after reading reviews decided to buy. Boy am I glad I did. It arrived a couple weeks ago and this past Sunday afternoon was well tested when my neighbor caught a 22 lb catfish and put it to use for the first time. Could not be happier and would definitely recommend.
Jo : Nice size gripper.
Functional and easy to use
Aaron Magnuson : Great for catfishing
One of my better catfishing equipment investments. Should have bought this years ago.
Roundhill : Works as designed
I took this out fishing in the ocean a couple weeks ago. It worked quite well- I caught a ling cod which had some nasty, sharp teeth. No way could I have un-hooked the fish without some sort of gripper device to hold the flopping fish. Unfortunately, the ling was too small and went back into the sea, but the gripper made it back home. No visible rust, so it seems like quality stainless steel was used.
James Smullins : Works perfectly.
After losing a really nice bass while trying to get a hand on the lip from my kayak last week I decided to get this for future trips. Used it on last trip and used it to land two nice largemouths. It was far faster then using my hands and gripped them tight allowing me to safely remove the hooks. Was worth every penny already. Can't wait to try it out for stripers and hybrids while kayak fishing.
The spring had good tension and the construction seems solid. I would recommend this one to friends for sure. I didn't and may never use the scale so can't comment on it.
Carroll B : Been using this for two seasons
This is a great device when dealing with a fishing that has a mouthful of teeth of large catfish. Once you get this on the fish's mouth it holds tight. I see no sense in praying 3-4 times as much for a name brand device that looks and works exactly like this one does. I don't use the built in scale as I carry a small digital scale if I need to weigh my dfish for bragging rights.
Jo : Nice size gripper.
Functional and easy to use
Matt Burks : Worth it for a cheap gripper.
For a cheap fish lipper it is worth the money. It gets gritty when used in saltwater. It holds strong. I lifted monster redfish and black drum with it. I drug a redfish a mile down the beach with this fish gripper. I wish the scale was more durable and it was all sealed off better to avoid salt and sand from getting in it.
rui valverde : Price and durability
Good product, very strong, I think the weight measurement doesn't work at 100% but it helps a lot, you can catch the fish with confidence because it won't run away, I recommend ....
Leo P : Generic Boga for 1/10 of the price!
So far so good. I have used the generic Boga a couple of times Surfcasting for stripers. It is much lighter than the real deal. The stainless didn’t rust at all, time will tell if it will last. For 15 bucks, I will take it. The company does offer you goodies for writing a review which is a little on the shady side BUT the product is good so no harm done.
Jo : Nice size gripper.
Functional and easy to use
Joe : Can't beat this for the price
For the price this thing is phenomenal. I only wish that it could give more precise weights below 4 lbs. Otherwise great.
BigM1103 : Cheap parts, tape measure fell apart!
Cheap....tape measure fell apart by itself. Plastic use to hold in place. Needs to be a metal screw.
DM : Worked well. Havent tested the scale
I have only used it on one trip, but it is a major improvement over the plastic clamp-style grippers. It did punch a hole in the lip of 2 fish, which is not ideal. But I will take that over losing a fish. Easy to use and didnt lose a single fish. Used for smaller sized halibut and striper in the 4-5 lb range without an issue.
Dustin Boggess : Great combination for the price
Compared it to my digital scale for half the price and it's within a tenth of a pound accurate. The measuring tape was a nice addition. Has become my go-to in my fishing bag
john W : Works as it should
I've used this gripper on at least 60 fish caught from my kayak in salt water. It has worked flawlessly and is easy to use one handed. Seems to be easy on fish and is less hassle to deal with than a net in the limited space on the kayak.
I give it a good rinse with fresh water after every trip and store it inside. No sign of rust or corrosion.
A no brainer at this money.
Scott dub u : Works for what's needed
Great product! Honestly bought this on price and easy release of toothy fish. Reading product reviews with people complaining about use in saltwater, ANYTHING STAINLESS STEEL will rust/corrode in saltwater. Personally retired from the marine construction industry after 25 yrs and all stainless rusts. Could build your dock and 6 months later come back to service your boat lift and screws were already rusting. Price allows you to by another in a couple years. Not interested in tape measure (2 deck boards= 1 foot, 3 boards=17.5 inches). Scale is always bragging rights!

THOMAS CONSAGA : Built in measuring tape is junk
The gripper appears to be good quality however the built in tape measure is junk, very cheap and flimsy, does not retract without being pushed in. I am very unhappy and returning this product. Made in China
John : Works Great
I used the Entsport Fish Lip Gripper Fish Scales on a recent fishing trip. First fish, 7.5lbs catfish. Held the fish firmly and securely. Needed my glasses to view the weight, but I'm older so my eyes needed some help. lol The handle measuring tape is great and eliminates the need for a separate measuring device. Seems to be a good quality 'Gripper' or 'Fish picker upper' as we call it on the boat. Recommended...
Courtney : Great grippers, scale for bigger fish
Easy to use with 1 hand and grips lips secure so nothing gets loose. The scale is better suited for larger fish (+4lb) and smaller fish won’t register anything even if they’re a decent size.

Amazon Customer : No ounces, great material, safe hands.
Grabs great, made of sturdy materials. Not a fan of the measuring system. It’s hard to see, you won’t get ounces, and the first 2 lbs don’t even register cause the grip is in the way. Keeps my hands safe from treble hooks and will probably last forever.
HandsomeWhiteDevil : A real eye opener and a must buy for any angler who values his/her fingers
This is an EXCELLENT value in fish grippers. Why anyone would pay $125 for the competitors product is mind numbing. As a service connected veteran, I make EVERY effort to buy American when possible, but I WILL NOT throw good money away. The fit and finish of the Entsport gripper is excellent, the mechanical design is strong, made of quality materials and works fantastic... Gripping a fishes mouth is not rocket science, it does not require spending 3 digits. I've used the my friends Boga grip and after buying this, I need to do a side x side review to illustrate the blatant lack of sense and judgement you'd have display to justify spending an additional $110 for a tool who's only advantage is mechanical rotation in hand. I CAN NOT be clearer here... It really goes to show the dumbing down of the American consumer, the effects of marketing, and a wage gap where people apparently have more money than sense. It is simply baffling how anyone could justify such a ridiculous waste of money.
Brent B. : It works, but hard on the fish
This gripper does the job but I didn't keep it because it was really hard on the fish.
I would catch a northern and traditionally would tired it out bringing it in, slowly grab under the mouth to avoid the gills and bring it out of the water. Most of the time the northern wouldn't thrash at all from that.
The 3 times I used this as a test, the fish thrashed hard when the gripper closed. I'm guessing because it does a slight pinch on the fish? With the thrashing though it ends up leaving a big hole in the bottom jaw where the 2 pieces of the gripper come together. I personally just didn't like that and I also didn't like that every time the fish thrashed as soon as I let the gripper close on the mouth.
I think they make some that have wider points that come together that wouldn't do what this one does but just sharing my experience with this and I decided against it.
A good jaw spreadset and your own hands works better and is better for the fish overall, at least for what I catch in Wisconsin.
bojamp : Just OK.......
Item just OK. Jaws need to open wider. It was a little bit of a challenge to get locked onto even a 4 or 5 lb lake trout.
It did hold the fish though. Scale is very hard to read. All that being said, it is inexpensive, and you get what you pay for.
One Degree Life : Good gripper, look elsewhere for the scale feature
Really wanted this to be great. The gripper itself works very well and the tape measure pointing straight down is a big help for determining fish length while hanging. However, I find the scale to be pretty useless and difficult to read. It doesn't seem to work well unless the fish is at least 4 lbs or so and it's very difficult to read the markings because the etching isn't very deep and it's recessed under a lip.
If you fish deep slat water or don't need the scale, it's a good value. I'll be moving to a digital scale with a measure in the near future. Hard to determine a new personal best if you can't trust or easily read the scale :)
James Smullins : Works perfectly.

User1 : Changed fishing season
Never used a tool like this for fishing, always grabbed fish by the mouth or gills for years. This was a game changer. Holds strong on any fish. Scale is not accurate and hard to read, but didn't but it to weigh fish, just to hold while landing. 1 season down and so far so good.
Miles l. : If you don't have good eyes you can't read the weight scale
The unit is well made, I think it can do the job the tape measure is great convenient. But the weight scale is hard to read maybe if they stamped it deeper it would show up better.
Jake : Worthless as a scale
Good gripper but the scale does not work
Scale is useless
Should not be sold as a scale

Michael W : so easy my kids can use it.
Great product, easy to use. Have used it 9n several 10+ lb catfish and it holds them perfectly, this has a strong grip.
Lan G. : Easy to grab fish but hard to read numbers
Claw works nice and hold fish but the accuracy is questionable. The lowest number is 2 so anything under that would not give you a number.
Highland Horseman : I am mostly a catch and release fisherman and like this product
It's good for protecting the fish by not needing to handle them with you with your hands, which can induce disease by disrupting the protective slime on their scales. I normally try to disengage the fish from the hook over the side of my kayak and have sometimes had the fish flop hard enough to snap the line and drop back into the water with the lure still in their mouth. Yes, the hook will rust away eventually but I don't like the idea of it, not to mention the loss of a $5+ favorite lure. Using a net can be cumbersome and still risks injury to the fish, and I only use it when I'm fishing for keeps. I've had success with this product in one hand to hold the fish and pliers in the other to remove the hook, and the fish really isn't too worse off for the experience. I do like the tape measure to identify slot fish - those that have to be released because of size restrictions - plus it's nice to know you're not embellishing your fish stories (too much). I think with care, the metal tape measure will last. The weight scale isn't accurate and I couldn't even read it if I tried, but that's not my purpose.
Reid Zuerlein : Super strong grip.
I’m not sure how accurate the scale is but the grippers work exactly how you’d expect them to. I’ve lifted up 20 pound catfish with these grippers with no problems. If you’re really worried about accurate weight measurements, just attach these grippers to a digital scale.
Michael J. Mock Jr. : For the price, it works well enough
This isn't going to hold anything over 25lbs with consistency, but it does just fine on the stuff we catch. We had a 2lb catfish that wriggled free when on the gripper, but it holds most. It seems pretty well made and should last us a few years.
Jeremy F. : works well
Just tried this on a toothy Ling Cod and it worked great. I bought it for toothy fish not for the scale so i didn't even look at the scale when I used it so I can't give you any feed back on that part.
Amazon Customer : Disappointing and cheap, don’t purchase.
I don’t ever leave product reviews, but this is a waste of $$. It should “hold” a fish fine, but there’s no way it will weigh accurately. The measuring tape is super cheap and will break quickly - and only long enough to weigh panfish. Wish I’d have spent more for something that works.
Anthony Gilleo : Don't spring for the tape measure
After 1st use, the tape measure will not retract so I should have just gotten the one without since I had a tape in my tackle box anyway. I also did not realize the scale would be for such large fish, probably more suited to ocean fishing, not the < 5 bass I am catching. Overall a quality tool for the cost though. Tested the scale with a 10 and 15 lb weight and both were accurate.
Paul Bradley : Works perfect for catfish
This works better then any other fish gripper I’ve owned. Big catfish to small fish works flawlessly! And for the price you can beat it!
Jo : Nice size gripper.
Functional and easy to use
Brent B. : It works, but hard on the fish
This gripper does the job but I didn't keep it because it was really hard on the fish.

JLMitch : Easy to use.
I bought this for my 8 year old grandson. It helps him grab and hold a fish. I added a float to the rope on the handle so it wouldn’t sink if dropped in the water.
Paul Bradley : Works perfect for catfish
This works better then any other fish gripper I’ve owned. Big catfish to small fish works flawlessly! And for the price you can beat it!
Brandon ward : highly recommend to hold even your big fish
works great, holds fish very well but not sure the scale is accurate. used a buddys fancy electronic scale and this one seems to be about 2 pounds off. but now i know so i can adjust accordingly lol
Matt Burks : Worth it for a cheap gripper.
