Questions about Electric Countertop Food Dehydrator Machine - Professional Multi-Tier Food Preserver, Beef Jerky Maker, Fruit Vegetable Fish Poultry Dryer w/ 5 Stackable Trays, 180° F Max Temp - NutriChef
Q:
Has anyone tried making beef / turkey jerky yet, and if you have how did it turn out?
Answer: I have made Beef & Turkey Jerky and they were better than any I have bought from a store. It took 6 to 7 hours. I use it all the time to dry and bottle things like parsley, celery, cilantro. Love making my own dry spices.
Answer: I made two trays, took about 6 hours. Jerky was PERFECT!!
Answer: Same here!, worked great on our beef taryakki
Q:
Can layers be added or removed?
Answer: Yes, it comes with 5 trays, but if you were to buy more they could be added. There is also no reason you have to use all 5 at once, I've used it with only one and still gotten the results I wanted.
Answer: Yes, they can. I returned the item. Food processed uneven.
Answer: Yes they can.
Q:
Are the trays stainless steel?
Answer: The trays are plastic

Q:
My first dehydrator; do you need to purchase tray liners or any other needed items for the drying process before using?
Answer: Tray dryers are a real good way of dehydratingredients anything realay minced (ie... garlic that's is chopped up coarse or minced would fall through the trays provided...I bought tray liners and I also cut to that shape plain parchment paper to dehydrate herbs & veggies. .
Q:
Has anyone found any liners, mesh or silicone, that fit this?
Answer: I haven’t found any liners
Q:
Where can I purchase additional trays and fruit leather trays? I see Kaonson mentioned, but I Googled it and nothing came up. Do you have a link?
Answer: It is really simple to get replacement trays. Go to the following link and click on parts only, it will walk you through the rest.
Answer: Also for fruit leather, you can use aluminum foil and line your existing trays leaving the hole in the center, and maybe poking small holes in foil. There is less circulation with fruit leather so you will only be able to do a few trays at a time.
Q:
is there a dehydrator with non plastic trays?
Answer: Trays are made of plastic, I do have to add that for the price this is by far one of the best dehydrators we ever owned.
Q:
Does this unit use a fan or just heat? How loud is it? Thank you

I'mean just a beginner, so maybe everyone knows, but How do I cut the thin slices of meat or fruit?

Answer: I've not done meat, but for fruit I just used a really sharp knife and sliced thin like 1/4 inch or less if you can.

Answer: You don't have to use all of the trays at one time. You can use as many as you want.

Customer pictures show a gray unit. i am really wanting black. please confirm that if i order black is will be true black and not gray? thanks. =)
Q:
Is this product safe since it's made in China?
Answer: I'm not sure what you mean by safe. If you're wondering if it will catch fire or explode or something, we've had no problems with it. But if you're talking about food safety, it doesn't get hot enough to cook meat or kill germs, so you have to follow basic food safety guidelines depending on the type of food you're trying to dry.
Answer: Hi, yes it is manufactured in China. You may check other details of the unit by visiting our website pyleaudio.com. Type the model number on the search box PKFD12 for more details. Thank you.
Q:
the plastic trays won't melt from heat will they
Q:
do you have to rotate the trays?
Answer: I have only used a dozen times for persimmons, but I had to rotate the trays once per batch and then usually had some stragglers that had to cook on the bottom tray for a little longer once the majority were done. It works fine for the price. But additional trays would definitely not work well (and I don't even think they sell them). I would have rather spent more and gotten a more powerful machine that had the option for extra trays.
Answer: I have not actually used it as of yet-but with my old one I rotated
Answer: Yes you do
Q:
Since this gets to 180 F do you pre heat in oven first before using this dehydrator or just use dehydrator for beef jerky? Asking for bacteria concern

Answer: 140 degrees will bacteria

How many watts?
Answer: I checked with another customer who said it was 250 watts
Q:
Has anyone made kale chips with this? How long did it take?
Answer: I made cucumber chips and it took awhile because they are quite moist. I wouldn't expect kale chips to take more than a few hours.
Answer: Good AM Katie. I had one of these before and it to about 24hrs to dehydrate most items.
Q:
How long does it usually take to make any dehydrated products? Length of time hour wise?
Answer: Hi, that will depend on the cut and the type of fruits you want to dehydrate. Usually, it takes 12 or 24 hours dehydrating food. You may check other details of the unit by visiting our website pyleaudio.com. Type the model number on the search box PKFD14BK for more details. Thank you.
Answer: I use my dehydrator for a different purpose so I can't answer that accurately. There are a million web pages out there that talk about food dehydration however, so you should take a look at them. Different types of food with different moisture content will take varied times to dry out.
Answer: It depends on what you are dehydrating; how dense the food is, how thick it is cut, etc. The things I have made are a very minimum of 4 hours.

CarrieB : Very nice thank you
Very nice thank you
Amazon Customer : Works great!
I love it! However, you may need to do some research or test runs if you need a specific drying temp. This has low, medium and high settings with an extra notch halfway between low-medium and medium-high. So far though, it’s done great with recipes that just specify cooking low or medium for x amount of time!
Doll : Didnt even work
Never even cooked my jerky. This thing doesnt work!
Jean : Good entry-level dehydrator
Ihave used my unit about 6 times now. Works quickly and quietly. Trays are a little flimsy but you get what you pay for. I bought this to see if making my own jerky and dried fruit would be economical and not too much work. I've learned that it's a good idea for my family - just be consistent with the thickness of your cut and you will get consistent product. Also I can eliminate the massive amounts of sodium in commercial jerky and added sugars in commercial dried fruit. When this thing breaks down I will buy a better unit, but for now it does the trick.
L. R. : Mr. Coffee Dehydrator Trays Work With This One!
I hope this helps someone who is in the same situation that I was. My very much loved Mr. Coffee Dehydrator that I purchased in the early 1990's recently died :( After doing much research to see if the trays would fit any other dehydrators, I found this one. Hooray! I did not want to throw the old trays in the trash and I really didn't want to have to buy extra trays for a new one. I have attached photos to show how they fit together so nicely! I am very happy to have found this dehydrator and am very happy with it so far. I have used it almost daily since I received it in the mail. The only difference that I would like to mention is that the hole in the middle of the NutriChef Dehydrator tray is smaller. Which is an improvement because you can fit a bit more on each tray.
Krystal DeSilver : Works great so far.
We've only had it for a few weeks but so far it is working great! We've made jerky and fruit chips. We do with it had a timer though, but for the price, I suppose we can't be too picky.

Ladybtrs : Doesn’t Work!
Does not work well. I dries zucchini slices and sweet potatoes for 18 hours and they never got crispy.
Ken Haukaas : I make beef jerky quite often and this dehydrator works great. You do need to rotate the trays throughout ...
This dehydrator work very well! I make beef jerky quite often and this dehydrator works great. You do need to rotate the trays throughout the drying process, but I feel this is normal for any dehydrator. I love the fact that it has a fan, this really helps in the drying process. I had another unit that did not have a fan and it did not work nearly as well.
LakeSideBum : Dehydrator Super Star
This a basic, few frills machine. What I like about it is it is simple to use, drys food well, as it is suppose to; and is comparatively low priced. There are fancier units available with more features, but it comes down to what you are willing to pay, and how many features you really need. This unit is a basic model, but it works just fine. I also like that it has an air circulation blower which is far better than the bare-bones machines that only have a heating element. I frequently make jerky for my dogs because they have food allergies (like 4-5 x/week). I thought the machine might not last very long because of how often I use it, so I really didn’t want to invest in an expensive unit. The one I bought works well, is easy to use and clean, and is priced much lower than similar units.
Tonto : Good quality product for the price
I bought one of this over a year ago and was very pleased with the quality and overall performance that I bought a second one for my sister a couple of months ago. The construction of this product is simple, no timers or features other than the on and off button. We use it to make beef jerky, just place the marinated beef stakes over the racks, rotate the racks after 3 or 4 hours and we have delicious jerky within 7 or 8hrs. My sister is also very happy with hers, she loves the simplicity and quality of this product, she tried fruits and vegetables and she says it works great for this too. I also want to point out that is very easy to clean as well. I definitely buy this product and from this seller again.
Gydisme : Five Stars
Works great and really good quality. We make lots of dried apple in this dehydrator.
S. M. : So I got this on Sunday. I got home ...
So I got this on Sunday. I got home from work, put some fruit in overnight and it's been working fabulously! In 2 days I have done beef jerky, strawberry chips, banana chips, and 2 sets of apple chips. My boyfriend laughed at me until he tasted the jerky. Now he's making requests.
Claudia J. : Works great, simple to use
Works great, simple to use, simple to clean. However, the fruit leather trays that are advertised alongside it (under the "Most people purchase these items together) did not fit in the dehydrator. The dehydrator itself was great! So far, I've made apple chips, banana chips, dried strawberries, and strawberry fruit leather.
theresa : Works great
I made beef jerky and dried some fresh herbs , do need to turn it on high seems to work better. The recipe booklet that came with it didn`t really tell you what settings to use. Other wise a great product.
Wanda Klietz : It works!
We like this dehydrated, it took about 30 hours To do a big batch of cherries, but it Could depend on what texture you want. I was very pleased at how quiet it was too. I would have liked a more accurate temp gage and a timer.
Andrew Hatfield : Jerky!!!
I love this thing. I usually buy two cuts of London broils to use as jerky and it fits perfectly into all the shelves. Dehydrates the meat evenly but I'd still recommend checking the jerky every few hours and pull the thinner cuts off so they don't get too dry; this may not be an issue if you aren't cutting them by hand like I do. I would definitely buy this again if this one ever broke on me.
Spacegunner : Nice Compact Dehydrator
Compact & easy to use. Dried my jerky in 2 hours.
Trays are easy to load, stack & clean in the dishwasher.
I would have liked to see temperature settings on the Temperature Control instead of Low, Medium & High, but since it is countertop, a minor inconvenience.
theresa : Works great

Customer : I love this dehydrator
I love this dehydrator! Ive owned one for at least 2 years now and I’ve never had any issues with it. It’s perfect for the beginner or for someone who is looking to only do some basic dehydrating. It’s great for dehydrating fruit, vegetables, herbs, and making fruit leathers. I’d be cautious about making jerkies, as you can’t control the temperatures.
Relic Beckwelf : Worst dehydrator i have ever owned!
Worst dehydrator I have ever owned. Bought this to compliment my current dehydrator as I could not get another at the time. This unit costs nearly 40$ more than my current budget model and is significantly lacking. It takes twice as long for the same amount of food to dehydrate, and the capacity is nearly twice as much! (Imagine my surprise when I tried to do two batches of jerky at the same time, same -exact- weights in both and same number of cuts and this one took double the time as my 5 year old budget model!) Would not buy again, would not recommend (get the 40$ presto model here on Amazon instead, less capacity but doesn't take 8 hours for a 4 hour job!)
- weird nooks and crannies in racks make cleaning a chore
- uneven heating and airflow (even with staggered spacing on racks and 1/2 inch between strips)
- loud
Kelly Davis : Meh
The layers don’t really snuggly fit together. I never know how long to dry stuff.

A. Beagle : Fun Kitchen Appliance
Works great!! I often throw fresh produce out because I don't eat it before going bad. This will pay for itself very quickly by dehydrating produce before they go bad. Made some beef jerky and it is delicious. Finding meat already cut for jerky was a pleasant surprise at two of my local grocery stores.
Nikko : Great Way To Make Your Own Spices
I have used this product for about a week. I followed the directions about letting it run for a while and cleaning the items before the drying process. I placed Rosemary and thinly sliced red onions on the racks for about 10 hours. It turned out great! I crushed my onions into a powder and stored my Rosemary for later use.
Gina : Easy to Use
Use the dehydrator for first time this past weekend making Beef Jerky. It did a great job and was so easy to clean as well. Very pleased. I can't wait to use this summer preserving foods.
dparker : Great price for a very good product.
This dehydrator is great, Works much better than my old one. It’s quieter, more sturdy and drys my peppers faster.
DCC : BEAUTIFUL GREAT QUALITY MACHINE
Just got it and haven't used it yet, so don't know much about it. I wanted something to dehydrate nuts and seeds after soaking them on advice from my Nutritionist, but know nothing about Good Dehydrating and will have to learn. There isn't too much information on dehydrating nuts and seeds, but from other sites I will be able to do it. It is very HUGE and overwhelming but makes me want to learn this new talent. They make it look easy at NutriChef.
Matthew : Good for the price.
Great dehydrator, especially for the price. The only thing I recommend is to oil the grates before dehydrating meat, otherwise it will get stuck to it and it's nearly impossible to actually clean. The grates are also too large to fit in the dishwasher standing up, so there's that too.

You do need to rotate the trays throughout the drying process, but I feel this is normal for any dehydrator. I love the fact that it has a fan, this really helps in the drying process. I had another unit that did not have a fan and it did not work nearly as well.
Maggie Luongo : It does have a Temperature Control Knob
I just received the dehydrator and haven't tried it yet. I took it out of the box and looked at it. My first impression was that it is nicely made. It does have a temperature control knob. When I ordered it from Amazon, the photo of the product must have been an older model and didn't show a temperature control. I also chose this model because it has a higher temperature rating than most.
Frenchie51 : This dehydrator has thin food trays
I returned this product the trays were so thin, the food only had maybe 1/2" to fit
cassandra : Great
Great product. Highly recommend
Butch Heth : A kitchen workhorse.
Trays lock together nicely, and holds an amazing amount of foods for drying. Quiet, and quite a bit quicker to dehydrate than our older model. I think the airflow is more efficient in this model, so drying time is faster. Very pleased. It has been running for about 4 weeks straight (cycling batches of fruits and vegetables) When our harvest is done, I'm going to do jerky. Very satisfied with how it's working for us.

Kathy Lemoine : It’s a good product to start with to see if you like it.
I guess it’s fine, it’s just not for me. Make sure you like dehydrated food. It’s a good product to start with to see if you like it.

Amazon Customer : No temp control, different than pictured
The good news: it dehydrates food.
The offgassing process worked as promised.
The bad news: no thermometer or timer. There is a dial with +/- but the actual temperature is anyone's guess. Funny because the manual tells what temperature to dry different foods at, but you can't set it, just turn the knob and hope it helps.
In the end, it took a lot longer to dry fruit than the manual said. I would get extra screens if you want to dry a reasonable amount of food at one time.
Seems easy to clean, takes up a surprisingly small amount of space. Not terribly noisy. Looks nice.
With no timer I couldn't run it unless I was babysitting it. Would be nice to have an automatic shutoff.
Screens need to be rotated.
Didn't bother with the dishwasher, just hand washed them. Have only used it a few times so far, so I can't comment on durability.
I don't think the screens are BPA free.
The model they sent me isn't the one in the picture.
The manual is easy to work with.
All in all, an okay beginner/basic dehydrator, with a couple of important flaws.
Ogre : Powerful
I got this to dry meats for soup. I drive truck OTR so healthy eating is a challenge, especially without refrigeration. This beast only has one control, but it cranks out 180°. Each tray holds about 1 pound of meat. I let this run overnight, and it dried chicken all the way down to "crouton."
I was using shirataki noodle for low calorie filler, but now that I see how well this works, I'm going to get extra trays and dry packages of frozen mixed vegetables as a cheaper alternative to both the dry soup vegetables and shirataki noodles. The manual says you can stack up to a total of 20 trays.
LaRene Gidcumb : It works
It works, theres no doubt about that, and it is my first dehydrator so I'm not sure what would actually be different with a better one, but the trays do not lock together. You have to just sit them on top of each other just right and hope the nothing will bump it.
The temp only goes high to low, and even in the book it doesnt tell you what temperature is high or low, so if you are following a recipe that tells you what temperature to use you have to just guess.
I'm glad I got it, but if I was buying it again I would just spend the extra 20 dollars and get a better one.
Nancy : Great machine!
I purchased this to make beef jerky and it works just wonderfully! The advertised dry time in the directions is accurate and can be adjusted up or down to vary the softness of the meat. It is easy to use and easy to clean.
Ladybtrs : Doesn’t Work!
Does not work well. I dries zucchini slices and sweet potatoes for 18 hours and they never got crispy.
mike moser : loud
the dehydrator makes a very loud grinding sound after operating for a short time. suspect the fan could be rubbing or ? but very nice product.. I ordered a 2nd one because I liked it so much and it makes healthy snacks with no added sugar, being diabetic nothing much is good for me. LOL
mrshlovejesus : Wash, Plug-in, and Use
I have owned a Mr. Coffee dehydrator for many years and this year it finally stopped working. I looked for a replacement, but Mr. Coffee apparently doesn't make them any more. This NutriChef dehydrator appears to be identical. The drying racks are exactly the same. The only difference is the adjustable temperature setting. Hoping to be able to stack my current trays on top of the trays that come with the NutriChef was my motivation for buying it, and the price. So far I am pleased. I dried a batch of figs just as soon as I received my appliance and it worked just like my previous machine. I can't give it 5 stars until I see how long it lasts, but I am pleased with it so far. The trays are easy to wash. The only things I would change about the machine is 1). Instead of Low, Med, High, I wish the temperatures were printed on the machine dial, rather than my having to refer to the owner's manual, page 19 to figure them out every time I use it, and 2). If drips are dangerous to the mechanics of the machine, why doesn't it come with a removable plastic drip catcher?
James I. : The model displayed on this page isn't/is a different version (?) than I received
The model shown all over this page and on Google Image Search has only a switch. What I received has a knob and a switch, yet it still says PKFD12 on the bottom. I've been emailing with the manufacturer to figure out what's going on, and they've been talking to the factory to figure out why mine has a knob. It's been taking awhile for them to find out what's with the dial. Did I receive an older model? Is it counterfeit? What is going on here? It seems to work though, although I don't know what to set the knob to, I just leave it on high.
Doll : Didnt even work
Never even cooked my jerky. This thing doesnt work!
