Questions about Opinel No. 10 Pruning Folding Knife - Stainless Steel for Pruning, Grafting, Orchards, Vineyards, and Gardening
Q:
How well does this cut 1/4-inch branches off bushes and shrubs if I want to collect cuttings for propagation? Thanks
Answer: have both Yatagan and straight style from Opinel and found the Yatagan style sharper. I used it successfully to cut 1/4-inch tree roots but found it slightly awkward and too sharp to trim bushes and shrubs. I think that it would be able to cut 1/4-inch branches if they are not stiff and woody. suggest to consider a good pair of snips to collect cuttings instead of knife.
Answer: Well, I did not try with #10, but with #8: it cut the plum tree branch in the back yard mercilessly. I suspect that #10, with its pronounced hawkbill, would do it in cold blood.
Answer: Knife was very sharp and works really well. 1/2-3/4 size cuts well with a litte effort.
Answer: Possibly my favorite garden knife. Love it. I purchased to cut my comfrey but have found it to be great for so much other things. Razor sharp. Just be careful. 1/4inch will be no problem and will make an easy, clean cut.
Answer: Not for think branch but mostly good for vines snd flowers
Q:
It came with the wrong size of virobloc, it does not lock it in closed position. How do I replace lock?
Answer: suggest you return it for a replacement. mine came with a virobloc spacing of about 1/8 inch and it works itself loose quickly. my straight blade Opinel has at least 1/4 inch and it stays locked for most uses. if you can't return it, then a tedious solution would be to file/cut down the lock tab so that it can twist under the blade to lock it.
Answer: It doesn’t lock and close position anyway all the hooked knives buy them don’t
Answer: I don’t lock mine. It is designed to be cut towards you - not away like a traditional knife
Answer: I noticed that, too, but I found it to be no problem, since the blade stores tightly within the handle. I suggest you search YouTube for any relevant info to your need.
Q:
Does it fold as the title states? It doesn't look like it to me in one of the pitures.
Answer: Mine also does not fold like other Opinels, the virobloc is the wrong size probably, or the blade does not enter far enough into the handle, Perhaps we got a knockoff instead of a real Opinel. I have other Opinel knives, they all lock correctly, this is the only one that does not lock when folded.
Answer: Yes, the blade does fold into handle. It is safe to carry in your pocket. You can use the locking ring to lock the blade into either the OPEN or CLOSED position. I use mine in our permaculture food forest all of the time.
Answer: Yes it does. I would attach a photo of the folded knife for you but Amazon won't allow it.
Answer: Yes , it folds like other Opinels.
Product reviews of Opinel No. 10 Pruning Folding Knife - Stainless Steel for Pruning, Grafting, Orchards, Vineyards, and Gardening
Palindrome : 4.5 Stars
It's a good gardening knife. Rather large and very sharp. It should lose half a star for not being able to lock it closed. It locks open, but not closed . . . not essential, but . . . . .
Sebastian : Decepción
Muy mal! Me llegó con el envoltorio ya abierto. Nose si el producto era nuevo o estaba ya usado
N. WILLCOCKS : Best knife ever - nearly.
Fantastic for a multitude of jobs, curved blade makes its efficiency much better. Good quality steel really holds an edge. Only possible concern is that being a wooden handle it can dry out and or swell depending on conditions meaning the blade can be too easy to open or hard to open. Unlike other straight bladed Opinels you cannot lock the blade shut and it can and has opened in my pocket, so be careful. Have had a few nicks from this and a cut inner thigh, but still would not be with out it. Indeed I bought this as a replacement for my old one which I lost / misplaced.
Tom W. : Like all Opinel knives
This knife is invaluable to me as I am a landscape gardener. It is just the ticket for cutting back perennials and trimming errant clumps of grass. Like all Opinel knives, it is best to have a sharpener handy and know how to use it. The latest iteration has the ability to be locked shut, which this particular knife lacks, but I am used to that.
Judalon Manes : Beautiful tool
I bought this as a gift for my husband who enjoys gardening and has kept a particular grapevine alive for nearly 20 years. However, the fruit was small and a bit too tart for table grapes and went to raisins. After doing some research, he told me about a tool vintners use. He loved this birthday gift. It is a lot more expensive than the other tools that do the same thing, but there is a certain cache in using a lovingly made-in-France knife that adds to the gardening joy.
TODRAC : couteau à greffer OPPINEL
Couteau de qualité que je conseille .
Kenneth : Great tool.
its a nice size to carry.
justme : great buy
excellent quality!
Mike H. : Great knife!
Great knife and very sharp...I was able to use it for harvesting grapes right out of the box.
Tom : Good shipping but
Very cheap . Very Dull .
mRj : great for clearing palm tree roots
bought knife for pruning but found the curved blade gets in the way of cutting when branches are too close together. knife is sharp but did not "lock" when cutting in the direction away from a person. had to clear some palm tree roots when repairing a sprinkler line and found this curved knife great for cutting through the dirt and hacking the queen palm roots. using this knife for root cutting (up to 1/2 inch in diameter) is wonderful because you don't have to clear away dirt and then use shears or a lopper to cut the roots.
review update--knife does lock but the Virobloc on my knife only engages "lock" in open position by twisting the Virobloc counter-clockwise. the stop area is about 1/16" and does work loose when cutting roots in the dirt which then releases the "lock." the Yatagan style is good for root cutting but was slightly awkward for trimming/pruning such as removing unripen figs. recommend highly to clear vegetation around sprinkler lines since you can hook the roots and cut also under and around the pvc pipes due to knife's shape and slim profile. planning to get the Opinel garden knife to do pruning.
Kenneth : Great tool.
its a nice size to carry.
Martha Lopez : Muy bueno!
Buena calidad y facil de manejar
Narno06 : it's an Opinel so yes it's good
Opinel is the brand of pocket knife for the working class: rugged, sturdy, usually on the cheap side you don't mind losing one or getting one rusty. If you take care of your Opinel you might keep it a life time. This one is very specific due to its shape and a bit pricier than the other Opinels I own, so I will take care of it a bit more. One thing: do not forget to lock the blade when opened, it is a manual step and could save you an unpleasant surprise.
Mike H. : Great knife!
Great knife and very sharp...I was able to use it for harvesting grapes right out of the box.
Wolf : Five Stars
Opinel simple quality product.
carlos : It's an opinel !
I like it you get what you pay for
The Foeux : Good gift for a gardener
A present that made the horticulturally inclined recipients very happy. I have used opinel pocket knives for a long time now. They are cheap, rugged, easily replaced if nicked or lost and the steel sharpens to a wicked edge easily. I am assured this knife is like a miniature sickle and a bumper crop of veg has been harvested with it this year.
Amazon Kunde : Supersichel
Preis/ Leistung optimal!

Pope Zeke IV : I have no complaint whatsoever.
This #10 serpette is basically a mini-sickle. The blade was sharp out of the package--razor sharp--as I expected from an Opinel. The tip is blunted for safety. It does not lock in the closed postion as #8 serpette. But it locks in open position. The blade is rather tight in the wooden handle, so it would not easily deployed by accident. All opinel blades come with 90 degree grind, so it would throw a good shower of sparks from a firesteel.
Edward E. Mingle : Malfunction
I love the knife But it will not lock in the closed but does in the open position ..What do you suggest ?

S.M. : Sharp comfortable and light wight!
Extremely Sharp right out of the box! nice fill to it and seems to be very comfortable not hevy at all. Awesome!
Lann Stewart : Love this knife for the garden
Opinel always puts out a great product at a reasonable price. I wanted something that would allow me to pull when I cut my plants. I find this great for cutting my Comfrey and cabbage heads. Be careful as it is extremely sharp and twist the lock in place before using. I just need to figure out how to properly sharpen it when in dulls.

Amazon Customer : Quality product, from a trusted brand
Quality product. Opinel offer a great range of products. Value for money, as you will not need to buy another pruning knife.
Alan : Might not be as sharp as it should be.
Others have commented how sharp this knife is. I would expect an opinel knife to be pretty sharp but the one I recieved was blunt. It did not appear to have been sharpened at the factory so I returned it for a refund.
