Questions about Weston 65-0501-W Professional Advantage Vacuum Sealer, 11", Stainless Steel and Black
Q:
Can you manually adjust the vacuum or will it stop automatically?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes, there is a 'pulse' option that allows you to control how much vacuum there is.
Answer: No, this model doesn't have just a "seal" function. There is no manual seal button.
Q:
How long is the sealing area? Is it a 15", 12", or less?
Answer: The unit easily handles 11 inch wide bags... The sealing heating element measures about 12 inches...
Answer: sealing strip is 12 inches long
Answer: It's 12 inches
Q:
How long is the plug in cord?
Answer: About 2 feet, but more importantly, I'm not really satisfied with the way this machine vacuum seals. I've wasted too many vacuum bags trying to get it to seal airtight. My older (and cheaper) machine did a better job! Good Luck!!
Answer: Approximately 48 inches
Q:
can you use Food Saver bags or only Weston ?
Answer: I use Foodsaver bags because the plastic is .004" thick instead of the .003" of the Weston bags and are frequently on drastic discount sales at local stores (and we live out in the sticks)
Answer: Use Foodsaver bags if you like to waste money. Otherwise go to webstrauntstore.com for bags. Way less costly.
Answer: We have successfully used Foodsaver bags. The bags should have one side with a texture.
Q:
Can I use off brand commercial bargain brand bags that are cheaper with this sealer?
Answer: I think you could. I ended up returning this since it didn't suction out the air. I had to pay $20 to ship it back & then 3 weeks Leyte inquire about the refund since they hadn't returned my money. So I wouldn't recommend buying it, but I feel ok saying you could use whatever bag you wanted.
Answer: Yes, you can use diferent brands of bags. But all bags you have to be corrugated bags.
Q:
Does it come with bags or is it just the vacuum unit itself?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: It does come with a small assortment of bags.
Answer: It came with a few sample bags. We loved this unit, but unfortunately it has quit working after 18 months.
Answer: you'll need to get bags. it will come with 10 bags of different sizes.
Answer: my sealer came alone , we use vacuum sealing bags by "ziplock" , find at wallmart
Answer: Mine came with a few bags
Answer: There may have been a few sample bags, but I ordered bags and rolls at the same time.
Answer: When I bought this it did not come with bags still worth having great produce
Answer: When I bought it, came alone.
Q:
What is the model number?
Answer: 65-0501-W
Q:
Can it be used with biodegradable bags?
Answer: Only bags specially designed for vacuum sealing will work.
Q:
does this come with a supply of bags to start or do you purchase them separately?
Answer: This does not come with any supply of bags. They will need to be purchased separately.
Answer: I think there are a few bags that come with it but you will need to purchase more. Also the bags come in different sizes and rolls.
Answer: Comes with a small amount of bags
Answer: No bags are included.... word of caution to you. DO NOT store the unit with the lid latched shut! There is a foam seal that will begin to leak if you do. Other than that it is a fantastic unit.
Answer: I believe it had a few sample bags; kind of a starter kit
Q:
Can I use food saver rolls with this product?
Answer: I honestly don't remember any of the instructions that came with the sealer saying you couldn't use other sealers bags (ie: Food Saver). But you can use the roll type bags with it and i didn't see anything stating you had to use their roll bags. I can't imagine it matters.
Answer: Yes... I replaced my Food Saver unit with the Weston unit and have many rolls of Food Saver left, and they work just fine.
Answer: Yes, it will work fine with Foodsaver bags, but I'd recommend buying a less expensive bag long term! They work just as well and save you a lot of money. See our whole selection by searching FoodVacBags on Amazon.
Answer: If you want to save $$, you'll want to buy bags from webstrauntstore.com. Far less costly than any sold by Amazon or (especially) Foodsaver)
Q:
Is the manufacturer's warranty honored if purchased through Amazon?
Answer: Yes. It is a new item and you will not have any trouble, but the warranty is good for any new purchase.
Answer: Yes, the manufacturer's warranty is valid just as if you were purchasing from a brick & mortar store.
Q:
Is there an attachment available for this item to seal food in glass jars?
Answer: I've never used it, but there is a place to attach a tube to evacuate special containers. It is located on the top of the unit.
Answer: I saw an adapter for Mason jars at a United grocery store.
Answer: Sorry, I don't know. The Weston sealer I received was defective (the lid would not latch so it wouldn't work). After seeing similar complaints, I returned it for a refund.
Q:
What I fail to see here are reports of longevity. FoodSavers, at about half the price, last us about 5 years each. Is this Weston better?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I have had FoodSavers brands in the past. These only lasted 3yrs tops for me, with the last year of use being problematic until they completely died. I went with the Weston due to this. I have not owned the Weston long enough to say it is more reliable, only that I can attest to the build quality of this unit is leaps and bounds ahead of any FoodSavers that I have owned. I expect it's longevity will prove out due to this. There is a reason it costs more. The old adage that you get what you pay for seems to apply with this model/brand.
Answer: Over the last 10 years or so I've gone through five of the Foodsaver and/or Seal a Meal machines. They simply are not made to withstand the rigors of even medium use, and will sooner or later (most likely sooner) either stop working or develop some other issue that can not be repaired as parts for repair simply are not even offered by those companies. They just assume that when their cheaply made machines die you'll just waste more money buying another of their brand. Parts for the Weston machines are readily available, should you ever need them.
Answer: Like the others, I've not had mine long enough to comment. However, the America's Test Kitchen review says it is of similar quality and capability as it's larger (and more expensive) brother, the Weston 2300. The review has been long enough ago that I would assume any defects would have been called out by now. Like the others, I've used and been disappointed by the Food Savers in the past, some lasting mere months before dying. The cheaper cost is not worth it.
Q:
What is the gasket made from? Foam, rubber, silicone? Does it hold up and is it easy to clean?
Answer: The gasket appears to be a soft but, firm rubber. It also appears to be well engineered and is placed into a groove that was designed for it. After 2 years mine has held up perfectly. It's extremely easy to clean. The door is hinged, swings up and exposes the slot to be cleaned. I had gone thru 2 FoodSaver machines that were both junk. This Weston is superior in every way. This Weston model is very well made. Well worth the money. I'd buy it again or give it as a gift with total confidence.
Answer: I think it's heavy foam rubber, seems rugged and it's replaceable, easy to clean overall.compared to the last 3 I have owned nothing comes close to the quality of this machine.
Answer: Its foam and the foam will compress and you will find it harder and harder to make it seal. It seems to de-compress OK and dig out of its groove, but I suspect replacing seals will be routine maintenance. I have not researched parts, but I'm about to see if I can find new a new seal. I've had mine two years.
Q:
Does this still have a 5mm thick sealing strip like its big brother?
Answer: Not sure about the size of the strip but I had lots of trouble with these sealers. The manufacturer replaced two of them under warranty, but none of them worked! Stay away from Weston!!!
Answer: Sorry, don't know because it died just after warranty period expired. Trashed it. Am currently very happy with the competing Food Saver machine.
Answer: Not sure, my machine broke seven months after purchasing. I should not have trusted Americas Test Kitchens rave reviews.
Q:
Does anyone know if the Foodsaver wide mouth mason jar sealer attachment would work on this one? I saw the hose and specific canister
Answer: Yes. I use the Foodsaver mason jar sealers with this Weston unit almost daily. It works perfectly fine. And the folks at Weston are very aware of the good fit between their machines and the Foodsaver attachments.
Q:
How do you seal both ends of a bag?
Answer: Cut the bag to length, seal one end, fill the bag, and seal the other end.
Answer: Place the bag in the unit as if you were vacuuming bag, only don't push the vacuum button push the seal button. And then load your bag with whatever you storing, place it in the machine and push vacuum. It will vacuum and seal the bags on its own.
Answer:
Answer:
Q:
How does it work soups and moist foods?
Q:
Does the Weston have the ability to seal jars and other things beside bags?
Answer: This model of Weston sealer has a vacuum port on top for accesories use, usualy not included in the basic kit. On this port you can connect a hose for jars, canister or other vac accesories
Answer: You need to buy additional attachments to preserve in jars. The basic machine just uses bags.
Answer: Yes. But you need the canister accessories not included in the unit purchase price
Answer: Yes but it is an additional attachment that you would buy
Q:
Can I use a 3mil vacuum bag?
Answer: I would think so
Q:
Where is the unit manufactured?
Answer: I'm not sure. I will say that I'm very happy with the unit.
Answer: Mine says China....like a lot of consumer goods these days.
Answer: Made in China as are most of the sealers
Q:
How does the sealer work when the bag gets wet? Can it seal through wetness?
Answer: Generally not. It is a heat seal, so moisture would be bad for the seal. You can protect the area by using paper towels above what you are sealing or par-freezing moist foods before sealing.
Answer: If the inside of the bag is wet along the area/surface where the bag will be sealed it might not seal properly.
Q:
Hello, can this use the 15"x18" embossed bags? Thanks!
Answer: I believe you should be able to use the 15 x 18 Universal embossed bags. I would also like to add use caution.I had a much less expensive FoodSaver brand that worked much better than this more expensive weston. I have to mash down on the top to get its to pull a vacuum.
Q:
This model sells on Weston's co. web-site for $189.00 and it's their retail price, not on sale. During sale it was 20% off! Why so high?
Q:
Has anyone used this vac. sealer with the umai dry age bags ? If yes how well did it do.
Answer: Yes, it worked great! I Umai(ed) a whole rib-eye rack for 45 days
Q:
Are there any reusable vacuum bags that would work for this vacuum sealer?
Answer: You can make them all reusable by putting food first in a ziplock bag or plastic bag and putting that bag into the vacuum bag.
Q:
Does the Weston Products Vacuum Sealer 65-0501-W work with the foodsaver jar lid sealer attachment?
Answer: Hi, I've never used it in this manner. However, the instructions say that it is possible. Both the cannister and the hose are sold separately. On the top of the vacuum sealer, where the control panel is, there is a hole where the hose would be attached. Sorry I couldn't help more.
Answer: Yes, much better than the food saver
Q:
what is the softening point of the bags?
Answer: when you suction it too wet so put a paper towel inside the bag before you vacuum
Q:
This unit is listed for sale on Amazon in 2 places for 2 different prices from the same vendor. Can anyone explain why?
Answer: Sometimes Amazon pricing adjusts based on competition. Of course, if you find it for a lower price, from the same reputable vendor (like us), purchase the lower priced one.
Q:
What is the difference between weston products 65-0501-w and weston products 65-0501-rt?
Answer: I have no idea; but, I use vacuum sealer bags from O2Frepak (sizes: 6"by10"; 8"by12" & 11"by 16") quantity of 50 bags for each size. These bags are BPA free. These bags appear to look identical to the Weston bags. I purchased these bags from Amazon. The vendor's website is http://www.toppack.com.cn
Q:
How much vacuum does this machine pull?
Answer: a lot
Q:
Just opened this up and it will not seal- it suctions but glosses over the seal. Is the machine defective?
Answer: Connie, I had difficulty starting off with this system also. Make sure your doing this on a flat surface and that your bag and contents are laying flat also. Then make sure that both sides of the bag are in the channel. You need to bring down the lid down until it clicks into the locks on the side. When you hit the start button the lights should progress through vacuum and seal
Answer: Have you tried just selecting the "seal" button? Does that work?
Answer: Make sure you have the material in the right way the gloss side up
Answer: Push down until it clicks on both sides. You'll need to use some force.
Q:
Doesn't vacuum seal out of the box. Is there a trick to get this to work? Seal works, just no vacuum
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: It should work right out of the box. Make sure the open bag is inside of the groove, close the lid clicking into place one side at a time. Hit start not any of the other options. It’s a great tool if you have problems call customer service for help if this doesn’t work.
Answer: Be sure the open end is fully in the slot with a sufficient margin outside. If you stuff the bag too high, it won’t seal.
Answer: No tricks just follow the instructions. The sealer may be damaged. Good luck!
Answer: Return, the unit is defective. My experience with this unit was that the vacuum pump stop working after 14 months.
Answer: check if there is suction from the small pipe on the side if there is none its the machine, also check the foam seal that thete are no kinks or damage where air can seap through
Answer: Frankly, I'm astonished that this question was forwarded to me by Amazon as it should be clear from my review that I returned the one I received because the lid would not latch. My advice is to get a Foodsaver. I love mine!
Answer: You have to make sure the top lid is locked down, on the sides there are tabs the lid locks into. They were a bit hard to lock into when I first got it but after you get the knack of how it's done very easy.
Q:
Will this unit seal other brands of bags? (Most of my bags are Cabela's.)
Answer: Yes, it should seal other brands of bags.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I use bags that I purchase in bulk (and for far less) from webstrauntstore.com that are Vacmaster bags, and they work perfectly.
Answer: We have used other brands of bags and it seems to work just fine.
Answer: Yes it will. This has been a good product for me.
Answer: Sorry, but answer is "NO".
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is this vacuum sealer works for sealing glass jars ?
Answer: No
Q:
Can you store the bag roll in the machine and does it have a removeable drip tray?
Answer: you can't store the role in the machine, the drip tray is removable for cleaning
Answer: No and No
Q:
why did this come with smooth bags?
Answer: The vacuum seal bags that come with this unit are clear, smooth on the inside of one side and textured on the inside of the other side.
Answer: Who cares it's still a great sealer so far.
Answer: I do not know why there is a difference but they work just fine.
Q:
In regards to moisture. Would I have to freeze meat prior to vacuuming? Or can I vacuum seal raw meat?
Answer: Generally you should be fine with raw meat, as long as you keep an eye out and press seal if moisture is creeping to the top of the bag. The suggestion of patting wet meat with a paper towel first is a good one, and of course par freezing wouldn't hurt if your prefer. It would also keep pieces from freezing together into one mass. This is a great home use machine!
Q:
Does it come with 220 volts for use in europe?
Answer: It is 110 volt only, no adapter comes with it but I'm sure you can buy one separately.
Q:
what comes in the box?
Answer: Machine, instructions, and a few starter bags,I have leftover Ziploc bag rolls, which are fairly heavy and they work fine so I imagine any good product will work fine
Q:
How do I seal both ends of a bag. I bought rolls instead of individual bags?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Cut the roll into the length that you need, seal one end of the "tube" (we usually double seal it), then fill the bag and then seal the open end.
Answer: Roll out the length you want and put one end in the Weston and hit the seal button. Now you have a seal bag.
Answer: Cut the roll to the desire length. Turn the machine on and place one end of the empty bag in the chamber, lock and select Seal until is done. Unlock and then put the product inside and place the other end at the chamber and lock. Select Start and wait the sign until is vacuum packed. Unlock
Answer: Cut bag seal one side fill seal other side.
Answer: Cut off the size you need plus a little extra, seal one end, I do a batch at a time. Then put your ingredient in the bag and seal the other end. Easy!
Q:
Mine stopped working after about eight months. Can you post a link to replacement gaskets? What about a how-to fix the vacuum if clogged?
Answer: I think you can just go to the weston website for parts
Q:
is this approved by nfs
Answer: approved and endorsed by americas test kitchen
Q:
Can this machine seal mylar bags?
Answer: I have not tried it, but I would think so. Mylar is a plastic film and this only takes heat to melt the plastic film. I would think so.
Q:
How does this handle wet foods? Also, has anyone used it repeatedly, and if so, does it get hot and need a cool-down period?
Answer: This doesn't handle well with wet foods. When you try to pack anything with water inside, water pours out of the holster and everything gets wet. It also causes that the machine can't seal the holster, so you have to wipe dry the holster and the machine and try over and over until the seal is propertly done.
Answer: I tried something that was slightly wet and it started to suck the liquid out into the machine, I had to quickly turn off the machine. Instead, I had to pre-freeze things that had too much liquid before I vacuum sealed the items. My understanding is that for meats in marinade, you have to buy an attachment. Regarding the unit over heating, I used it for about 2 hours and vacuumed sealed about 12 bags and it was not even slightly hot. I am ver impressed with the machine so far.
Answer: You may like to use the "pulse" mode. Another trick is to freeze the open bag and seal it after it becomes more solid. Good luck
Q:
Are there BPA free bags that can be used with this?
Q:
what are the dimensions?
Answer: The dimensions are: 15-1/4"W X 7-3/4"D X
Q:
Is there an attachment to seal zip lock bags, cant find it on the website.
Answer: There is a hose to vacuum special plastic containers that they sell. The hose fits the machine, but I used Shoe Goo to fashion a better seal at the machine end, and added a Shoe Goo gasket and plastic bottle cap to the bag end. This works great with the special Zip loc type bags sold for the other branded machines. It's possible that the companies that sell the special bags will also sell a made-up hose to work with them, but my rig works well.
Answer: Like ZipLok bags? No.
Answer: Not that I've seen. The intent is to heat seal the bags, and is more secure than Ziploc.
Q:
How many consecutive seals is the weston 65-0501-w professional advantage vacuum sealer capable of?
Answer: I have not hit the limit yet. #1 thing to watch is the replaceable seal (big oval ring) that keeps the vacuum tight. I am several hundred seals so far friction free.
Answer: The recommendation on the product states that you should wait 20 seconds between each seal, so I assume that if you do that you should be able to do plenty. When my friend borrowed mine he didn't follow the recommendation and subsequently diminished the machines sealing capability. Afterwards I had to put pressure on the on the front stainless steel arm while sealing in order to get the machine to function properly.
Q:
how does this work with canisters? can you use canning jars with seal lid like the foodsaver?
Answer: Sorry, I can't answer this as I returned my Weston sealer because the lid would not latch - therefore the sealer would not work. After seeing several other complaints about the same problem, I think I'm going to buy a Foodsaver instead.
Answer: They used to sell a complete canister set that would allow you to connect the accessory tubs to the top of the canister. I don’t believe they sell them anymore and haven’t seen an adapter for mason jars.
Product reviews of Weston 65-0501-W Professional Advantage Vacuum Sealer, 11", Stainless Steel and Black
Greenwood Village CO : Faulty lock
I purchased this item based on recommendations on the Amazon website. It is an expensive product. That said, the lock on the lid doesn’t clatch so the machine cannot function, despite many attempts to make it work. At this point the sealer is completely worthless.
garylutsky : Ok
Ok
Stephen Muenster : I hate it when I buy something cheap and end up ...
I've never owned any other brand of sealer, so I can't compare, but this is a very solid machine and I expect it to last. I hate it when I buy something cheap and end up upgrading later, so I generally try to skip the cheap buying and go expensive early. I read some complaints about how hard it is to close, but I like the solid feel of pressing down hard and a good solid click as the cover locks in place. The heat seal works great as well. I've even put some slightly wet meat in that sucked up some of the juices into the sealing area, and the machine still put down a good seal. I'm sure there are limits as to how wet it can be, but it is good to know that a little sloppage won't cause a bad seal.
Kindle Customer : First failed within months ; second failed in a little over two years
The Weston was OK when it worked. It is hard to latch closed on the bags. The first unit failed (no vacuum) within months. The company replaced it under warranty with no questions, just a photo of the dead unit with the cord cut off. The sealer worked OK for about a year and steadily declined. The second sealer failed completely after about 26 months in service. The sealer was used moderately, perhaps ten sealing operations per week.
Duncan Fox : Decent machine, terrible gaskets
Arrived with one of the gaskets damaged, but worked okay. Replacing the gasket costs north of 40 usd from Weston for a piece of foam that probably costs less than a penny. I think I'll just buy another machine that doesn't have such delicate and expensive seals.
Edward P : vacuum failure
vacuum failure, had machine for a year, of course no warranty, wrote email to manufacture, requesting cost to repair, no reply yet, suggest you look at their warranty, I did not really use the machine heavily, just bought a new machine, different brand.
John H. Power : Puts Foodsavers to shame
Yes folks. It will crush a coke can. Enough said.
Chad Thompson : Not really impressed with this unit
This is not that great of a unit. I replaced a low end food saver with this product thinking it was an upgrade. It isn't. The system rarely sealed completely and I have had to change out the seals twice after limited use.
Any amount of liquid in the product you are sealing renders this unit completely and totally useless.
I have not been impressed with this unit and wish I hadn't given my food saver to a friend. The $25 food saver outperformed this unit by a large margin.
Stephen Rogers : Good machine. Somewhat delicate. Good customer support from Weston.
The unit works well. For freezer storage or sous vide it is the perfect tool.
The trick is getting a good seal with the bags. Ensuring that the locks on both sides are engaged and if necessary gentle pressure on the top of the lid are all that is required.
Caution: If you allow liquid to be sucked into the works you will have problems. I was not good on this issue, fouled the pump and needed to contact Weston for a replacement unit. This they did with no questions. (Which I thought was generous as I created the problem.)
In short treat it kindly and it will give you long service.
Mark : This product is a piece of junk
This product is a piece of junk. I used it very sparingly, perhaps once a month to seal steaks to sous vide. It stopped working after about 6 months. The sealer works but the vacuum suction function no longer works. I have used this exactly according to the manufacturer instructions. I bought this because I wanted a sturdy sealer that would last for years. Very disappointed.
PecanBoy : Well Built
Sturdy. Easy to use. The pulse feature is invaluable. Has mass and doesn't feel plastic and cheap. Strong vacuum.
W. Peel : Weston 65-0501 Vacuum Sealer
Note - this unit seems to be a newer version of the Weston Professional Advantage. They have the same model no.
I selected the Weston over other models largely due to its positive review in Cooks Illustrated magazine (if you are not familiar with CI’s equipment reviews, they are quite thorough). This model uses a larger vacuum motor, which extracts more air, preserving food freshness longer – a claim tested in the review. Controls are simple and intuitive. The Weston bags and bag rolls seem to be priced more economically than those offered by other vacuum sealer brands.
My personal experiences with the machine have all been positive. Limitations of the Weston sealer are 1) that larger motor is rather loud, and 2) latching the hinged top to takes a downward force of about 10 lb. on each end. There is a YouTube video demonstrating these two points, so they came as no surprise to me.
I spent more than I had intended when I began my search, but the Weston seems to be a sturdy machine. Weston also provides an extensive list of replacement parts on their website should a repair be needed.

Corianton Hale : Works great but won't seal wet meats like fresh ground clam
Works great but won't seal wet meats like fresh ground clam, which was a large reason I bought it, living in the Pacific NW.
Ciaran : Broke within six months of purchase and cannot be returned ...
Broke within six months of purchase and cannot be returned. This product was the top-rated vacuum sealer by America's Test Kitchen.
Stephen Muenster : I hate it when I buy something cheap and end up ...

I've even put some slightly wet meat in that sucked up some of the juices into the sealing area, and the machine still put down a good seal. I'm sure there are limits as to how wet it can be, but it is good to know that a little sloppage won't cause a bad seal.
Tucker : Great product
So far so good. This vacuum sealer does a great job of vacuuming and sealing products. The manual "pulse" mode had already come in handy a few times while trying to pack certain veggies. Feels like a very sturdy build as well.
This vacuum sealer is also one of the few that I felt blended in with my other stainless steel appliances in the kitchen.
Rose : As described
It is everything we wanted and worked great
J. Panzer : Sucks!
And that's exactly what it's supposed to do.
Frank Toner : DON"T BUY IT
This sealer, which I purchased last year, doesn't seal the bag properly. I sealed food items and later found that it didn't seal the bag completely and I got freezer burn on filet that I froze. It also sealed chicken for sous vide and the bag leaked into the chicken and ruined the meal. I would not recommend this sealer and the price is outrageous.
Scott A. Martin : Good customer support
Great customer support for gasket replacement. Very heavy duty and durable but gaskets will eventually fail mine at 3 years. Normal maintenance. If you are noticing lack of suction its probably the gaskets.
philip paquette : DID I BUY A WESTON VACUM SEALER OR ONE JUST PACKAGED AS/AND CARRYING THEIR NAME?
I bough the Weston Pro Advantage vacuum sealer though Amazon and received it on 10/16/2019. It worked good for the first dozen times I used it, but over the Thanksgiving holiday I noticed it was taking a longer and longer time to vacuum/seal the bag and then finally not vacuum/seal the bag at all. I concluded the left hand side lid lock assembly was not working properly and on December 9, 2019 I contacted Amazon support (who informed me that I could not return this product for a refund as it was past 30 days) and the Weston company itself, who said they would replace the broken vacuum sealer under warranty, without the units return, conditioned upon the fact that I email them a photo of the unit with the power cord cut off and manufacturers label. While the new unit arrived yesterday it came with a packing slip indicating that the 65-0501-W Pro Advantage vacuum sealer it is in fact a Hamilton Beach product both packaged as/and carrying the Weston name. I think it speaks for itself, that Weston knows this product is defective and not worth the $185 I paid for it, otherwise why would they have sent me a second vacuum sealer without me having to return the first one? At this point I would rather have my money back than another possibly defective product. I am going to contact Amazon again and try to get to the bottom for this.
William B. : BUYER BEWARE!
POS, if you don't know what that means then go ahead and buy one. I used it the day after it arrived, vacuum sealed three small packages of dried tortellini and then it stopped working properly. It would prematurely seal prior to vacuuming all the air out of the package. I wasted half a roll of bags trying one after the other until I finally gave up. Returned it to Amazon the next day and purchased the Food Saver "Game Saver". Now that's one awesome vacuum sealer - VERY IMPRESSED!
I did a lot of research and the review by Americas Test Kitchen was what sent me over the top and sealed the deal on the purchase, I really value their tests and reviews, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and I received a lemon from the manufacture.
Bright Side- Amazon has the best customer service, and product return procedure, second to none, I love Amazon!

jmarka : Will Not Last
They don't last. After very little use the vacuum/suction loses power and will not get all of the air out. As a result, you have frost and ice inside your bag. Don't waste your money. If Weston was ever great, they are not now.
Seattle Jim : Quality Control problems, but the good ones are excellent
The first one I got would not function unless I leaned on the lid. I checked youtubes, and sure enough, it should operate when you click both sides shut. But on the first one: You could hear the switch click open again!
The replacement was delivered today (next day), and it works as it should! Click both sides, then hands-free. Don't let anybody tell you that it's normal to have to lean on it. Send it back, maybe they'll insist on better QC testing in China.
Carlyle Cordle : Quality unit
Read review of vacuum sealers in America's Test Kitchen. This was their top choice. I had a Food Saver that had run it's course so to speak. Liked it so much, I bought one for my mother-in-law. She also had a Food Saver that needed replacing. She likes this one too. Used it on bags of course but also on canisters. Works great!
Eric H. : Okay at first but over time started having issues. which may be normal usage wear and tear!!!
I bought this from Amazon in June of 2016. Initially things were great. Sealed like a champ. Seemed sturdy etc. Now however the vacuum part has stopped working properly. Sometimes it just wont seal. I've found that if I press down on the center (W logo) I can get it to go but it still doesn't seem that strong. I wonder if it is because when you close the lid you have to firmly press either side to get it to latch properly - my guess is the lid is bows a bit over time and repeated usage. Everything appears to be in order as far as I can tell - the gaskets etc, nothing seems out of place or damaged. So was happy at first but then disappointed in the medium/longer term. This is a bummer since I was willing to pay a bit more for what I considered a "premium" product. YMMV of course - I do like the size & "style". Also this model is not listed on their website - wonder if it's like a walmart thing i.e. "made for amazon". Could be a good or bad thing - sometimes cheaper materials/construction capitalizing on a name brand.

UPDATE! May have overreacted a wee bit..
============================================================
I contacted customer service via phone - likely the seals are going and they offered to replace the unit or send a seals replacement kit. We'll see how the new seals work. So it is important I guess to realize that things like seals will degrade over time - just the nature of the beast. Also the rep mentioned that their website is undergoing some changes so may not reflect current information etc etc. Very satisfied with the support I've received so far so that is a good thing.
Robert hoopes : Disappointed
Had a problem with the vacuum. Took weeks for a response.,and then no help..would have paid to repair..they acted like they didn't want bothered
Stanley Strahan : Easy to use!
Much easier to use than the food saver I previously owned. Close it push the on button and wait.
Gus : Does not work, bottom line.
This unit sucks the air out, then seals, then "pffffffff" .... the air goes back in. Even if you hold the bar down firmly. This will not hold a seal for more than a few minutes, no matter how the bags are placed in the machine. Junk.

lokitaka : this is a good product if you know how to use properly
First off, this is a good product if you know how to use properly. For simple vacuum sealing jobs, it does well. However my main issue with this product is Weston’s clear lack of long term support for this particular product. The warranty is only 1 year long and if you want replacement parts or want it repaired outside of that period you’re SOL; even if you’re willing to pay for the parts/repair and shipping and handling. Any spare parts for this particular sealer only exist for warranty claims so if it breaks outside of warranty then ¯_(ツ)_/¯
At that point the only option you’re left with is buying another one or you could buy one of the more expensive pro models that Weston actually sells replacement parts for...
I’ve never been a fan of FoodSaver but even they have a 5 year warranty on their products. Either way I probably won’t be getting another Weston product for a while, if ever.
Sanford Lavine : Quality product works very well
This item is at the dividing line between the above average home sealer and the pro sealers. Leaning towards the pro sealer by the same manufacturer. It seals well and the vacuum works very well.
I don’t care if it doesn’t house a roll of plastic or have a built in cutter. It is easy enough to hand cut bags or used pre-made bags.
THXSND : Horrible Product
Horrible product. 2 of them both stopped working within the first week. America's Test Kitchen picked this as the vacuum sealer to buy. I will never trust their reviews again.
Gary L Laffoon : Works great
Works great
LH : Great product, had an issue, happy ending
We love this sealer! Sadly, it quit working after a couple of months—it would not power on at all. I contacted Weston, and while I had not completed the online warranty form within 30 days, it turns out I was exempt from that requirement under CA state law. Weston customer service was exemplary! Fast and courteous service, and they shipped me a new sealer right away. So far, it’s working perfectly.
KYLE : Quality product.
It's much better than the other 2 FoodSavers that I've gone thru. More powerful suction and better heating element by far than FoodSaver. Had I bought the one Weston at a slightly higher price, I'd have saved money vs. buying 2 FoodSavers. Before I tossed out my last FoodSaver, I disconnected the remote suction device and it fits in the Weston so I saved $15 not buying that extension separately.
KA Nielson : WOW! So much better than Food Saver this replaced.
Wow so much better than the Food Saver vacuum sealer this replaced. Heat seal is at least 1/8th inch wide and seals perfect. This will pull a vacuum so much deeper than the Food Saver. There is just no comparison. My Food Saver was probably 12 years old but it hardly ever got used because the seal would always leak so it was really pointless to go through the trouble when a ziplock freezer bag did a better job.
Tom Dambrogio : I've used multiple sized bags and all have worked great.
Limited use so far but works as it should. First few uses were for camping trips and it made packing coolers much easier and helped keep everything dry. I've used multiple sized bags and all have worked great.
N.M. : It quit working before I used all the bags that came with it.
I paid a lot of money for a tool that didn't last long enough to use all the bags that came with it. I am very disappointed. It worked great until it didn't work at all.
Tannhauser : Extremely Disappointing
I'd purchased two food sealers in the past and was disappointed in that they broke down after a few months. So, I decided to make an investment and sunk $200 on the Weston 65-0501-W.
Sure enough, after eight months, it stopped vacuuming and the sealing was extremely erratic. I contacted Weston and was advised that the foam gasket was likely damaged and I should purchase a maintenance kit. After doing so and installing the new gasket and sealer bar, it still does not remove the air or seal dependably.
For the amount that I paid, it really should last longer than eight months of intermittent use. Not a good product in the long run, poor value.
I strongly suspect most of the positive reviews were written in the first few months of ownership.
Mary : Best ever
It is the greatest Vac I have ever used, I have told everyone who ask me
handicapped shopper : Replaced my FoodSaver, but ....
So far, I like this sealer. It has less bells and whistles than my FoodSaver, but seems to seal a bit better. I DON'T like having to snap it down and unsnap it after sealing. I also don't like the accessory being a separate port and having to buy and store the hose separately. I don't like
having no storage or cutter for the rolls, either. I got used to my FoodSaver which grabs automatically and releases when done. It takes up more space on my counter, too. But, I'm hoping it lasts longer. I've needed to replace my FoodSaver MANY times over the years, and I'm tired of it. I'll update if I find it breaking down, too. For now, I only use it with precut bags, AND I still have my FoodSaver for use with the rolls. And, I miss the bells and whistles on the FoodSaver.
Amazon Customer : Worked great for two years, then didn't
I bought this in 2017, and loved it. Fresh cheese, chicken, meat, everything sealed great and was fresh when I needed it. then it had trouble making vacuum, and that was obviously seal problem. If I pressed on the closure exactly right, it worked fine - time to replace the seals! So I did, and the heater, too. If never worked correctly again. It would seal if I unplugged it and did the seal first thing, but it would not draw down a vacuum and then seal. I would always get that alternating blinking lights.
I wrote a note to customer service, but no answer after a week. All I can say is that it worked great for two years, and then it didn't.
PecanBoy : Well Built
Sturdy. Easy to use. The pulse feature is invaluable. Has mass and doesn't feel plastic and cheap. Strong vacuum.
Liz R. : Piece of junk. You can find better options in this price range.
It’s always been hard to get to seat properly- I’ve had to put my entire body weight on top of it to make sure it seals. I emailed Weston customer support to ask if mine might be defective and the answer I got from them was basically “I have the same one and it works great, maybe yours hasn’t broken in yet” even though by that time I’d processed a deer and had used it for more than a year. Now the foam part tore off, as you can see in the photo. Would not recommend. My old FSaver one was way better.
Corianton Hale : Works great but won't seal wet meats like fresh ground clam
Works great but won't seal wet meats like fresh ground clam, which was a large reason I bought it, living in the Pacific NW.
John H. Power : Puts Foodsavers to shame
Yes folks. It will crush a coke can. Enough said.
KYLE : Quality product.
