Questions about Nesco Gardenmaster Food dehydrator, One Size, White
Q:
How loud does the machine run?
Answer: We have a decibel reader, it was at 72 decibels. I was talking loud apparently at 70. A vacuum cleaner is at 80. So somewhere between your loud aunt and a vacuum cleaner. We had it on our kitchen counter, it reminded me of a white noise maker.
Answer: It is loud. Did my first batch of fruit today. Had to put out on porch.
Answer: It's about as loud as a floor box fan or portable fan. You do have to talk over it if you're standing right there. But it makes your house smell great so it's a tolerable nuisance!
Answer: It is very loud and smells like burnt hair. Then it dies. Do not waste your money on this junk product!!!!!!
Answer: It is a steady low pitched rumble. It is louder then you would expect. Puts out a lot of heat. I use it a lot. Put it out on porch in summer and in utility room in winter. Warms the room up.
Answer: It is probably like a medium quiet dishwasher. It is the fan that makes the noise and it is a larger unit with a larger fan than the one I use which is the FD-60. Mine is about like a noisy computer fan. I hope this helps you.
Answer: I do not know that answer.
Q:
What is the model number for extra trays, screens and fruit roll trays?
Answer: I have the Nesco FD-1040 and purchased Nesco TR-2 add-a-tray and Nesco SLD-2-6 fruit rollup trays on Amazon. They look and fit like the ones delivered with the unit. I went to the Nesco web site to purchase the herb drying screens and to verify the fit of trays I bought on Amazon.
Answer: Nesco TR-2 Add-A-Tray for FD-1010/FD-1018P/FD-1020, Set of 2
Answer: fd1040
Q:
Is this BPA free?
Answer: According to the NESCO website, any plastics that will touch food are BPA free. That's all I know.
Answer: My understanding is that the max temperature the dehydrator achieves is not high enough to release off-gassing chemicals so BPA is not an issue in this case.
Answer: Yes! And it is a great dehydrator
Q:
is it made in the usa?
Answer: The booklet that it came with says made in the usa of usa and foreign components.
Answer: Made in CHINA. If you look underneath the top part/the fan control panel, it is stamped Made in China. The wording on the box is very misleading and confusing.
Answer: It was made in China
Answer: Made in China
Answer: Yes
Q:
How easy is it to clean the trays?
Answer: They say not to put the trays in a dishwasher, but always a rebel, I do it anyway. OK, I paid the price, since they deform slightly from the heat in the dishwasher. But after 30 seconds of pre-scrubbing, they come out very clean.
Answer: Top shelf dishwasher and remove before the drying process starts. Or clean by hand easy. Just lube with vegetable oil before you start
Answer: Yes it is very easy to clean trays and works great
Answer: The trays are not hard to clean, but I don't think this dryer works very well. I have owned two other Nesco dryers with the heating element in the bottom that dried much better. I am very unhappy with this one.
Answer: The screens aren't too difficult to clean, but I usually let them soak for a few minutes first. To help make the trays easier to clean, I bought some screens that sit on top of the trays. Then while I am doing the dishes, I let the screens soak at the bottom of the dish water. By the time I get to them, they are real easy to clean.
Answer: Hi Theresa, actually they do clean very easy except they do not fit fully in a standard sink. I have put them flat in my dishwasher but DO NOT use the heat cycle but I would rather just wash by hand. I recently did tomatoes and actually the racks don't get that messy. I do love this dehydrator though because the racks are quite large...that is a plus for me!
Answer: I. Purchased a very "inexpensive" galvanized pans from salvation army (try a used items store), and when my trays got REALLY and sticky-gooey one time, I filled it up and soaked them for just a couple of minutes AND,wow they got super clean. Good luck.
Answer: Very easy. I have a brush at my sink that I use and that's it. If you follow the directions like the instructions says then it is no harder than washing dishes.
Answer: It isn't too bad at all if they fit in your dishwasher. Everything comes of pretty easily. When washing by hand, it's not bad either but you have to resist scrubbing too hard as the plastic grill is fairly thin. That being said, I've never broken any of the trays even with a bit of pressure.
Answer: The trays are super delicate so you need to be careful not to break them. However, soaking them in water reconstitutes everything that had dried on them and so it comes off easily. I have a 1 gallon tub that I use to wash vegetables and it works great for this. I wouldn't put them in the sink with other dishes.
Q:
why is a 1000w needed when temp only go from 90-160 can sum one explain what difference between a 600w-1000w dehydrator surely 600w would same job as
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: It depends on the number of trays used. A 600w would take us a very long time to finish. We use 1000w with 8 trays. That takes long enough. Less trays, less power required.
Answer: Drying the same number of trays to the same temperature is less work with the higher watt unit - so if doing small batches at lower temperatures the larger unit is less stressed and will last longer. Having more in the machine, or drying at a higher temperature you will reach a point where the smaller machine will be running at full capacity - but still not able to perform as requested. And running at higher capacity the smaller unit is going to burn itself out sooner.
Answer: The main reason is that drying time will be shorter, thus you will use less electricity to accomplish the project. Also, it gives you the ability of drying larger loads, again saving time and electricity.
Answer: But I believe a 600 w. would take longer to accomplish a task
Q:
Does it work with European voltage
Answer: This is a USA standard product, it is 120volts. Please consider buying one of the voltage transformers in our store if the voltage in your country is not 100-120V. Hope this helps.
Q:
What is the usable depth of the trays?
Answer: You have about 1/2 inch on the top of the tray and then another 1/2 inch clearance from the tray or lid above. This helps in not getting your food to thick, taking a long time to dry.
Answer: I just measured from bottom of one tray to top of the other and it is just under an inch. ed
Answer: they are about one inch deep but it is inconceivable that anyone would pile that much material into one tray. thin slices of apples, mangoes, etc., one layer deep. too much density and the machine would burn up before completing its job.
Answer: About 1 inch.
Answer: I'd say slightly more than 3/4"
Answer: just under an inch
Q:
the extra trays do not say that they are for the FD-1040 - do they fit the maching ?
Answer: yes! i had the same concern. apparently nesco recently added the 1040 gardenmaster and it isnt listed on all sites yet. Additional trays that say the fit the '1000 series Gardenmaster' will fit the 1040. happy dehydrating :)
Answer: Hello, yes the extra trays do fit the machine. I was surprised to find them included also. Saved me from having to purchase them separately.
Answer: Yes! My wife has used the old and new trays without any problems.
Answer: Yes. They do!
Q:
what is the warranty on this? (just in case i have a problem) ??
Answer: 1 year.
Answer: Look it up!
Q:
How well does it work to make Kale Chips in this? Are the trays tall enough and do they need to be rotated?
Answer: I haven't tried kale chips yet but my sense is they would be good. I do mostly meat jerky and have found rotating trays does dehydrates meat evenly. One plus I have found is the drying time is way less than any of the recipes I have found on the internet or in cookbooks.
Answer: Haven't done it but should work fine. Rotating would only be necessary if you space the material being dried too closely together or the material is dense (AKA thick slices of whatever). This unit has better air circulation than the old one we had. I used trays from that old unit, dried stuff 6 or 7 trays deep with no problems. I agree that drying times are much faster than I expected.
Answer: I haven't done Kale. I have tried sweet potatoe, okra, green beans,, jerky, all did well veggies get crispy but fruit stays chewy. That doesn't seem to be a fault with this unit it is more a fact about dehydrating fruit. The circulation is great so rotating is not required. I think Kale would do fine. I also got the screens to dry herbs (sold separately). Herbs do great. I am very pleased with the quality
Q:
Does this come with a cookbook?
Answer: It comes with a basic tips for drying
Answer: Not actually a cookbook. It's more like a guide flyer with all the basics, regarding dehydration times per fruit/vegetables etc. Also contains some recipes but not something special.
Answer: Yes it came with instructions and temp & time recommendations based on what you're dehydrating. At the rear of the booklet, they have a few recipes.
Answer: I believe the instruction book has pretty detailed drying times and tips but not much in the way of recipes.
Answer: A simple one that has drying times.
Q:
does this come with a screen for herbs
Answer: It came with only four trays (I ordered two more) and one plastic 'sheet' for slurry and one plastic screen for finer foods.
Answer: It has a screen used for fruit rolls..could be used for herbs.
Answer: Yes, it comes with 4 regular trays, one mesh tray for small items like herbs and one solid tray for puréed food like fruit leather. This is a very good product as the timer makes it possible to set it at any hour.
Answer: Yes it comes with one
Answer: No, you can purchase that separately... Cabelas carry them.
Answer: Yes but only 1
Q:
Is the BPA free? Or better yet, can someone tell me the recycle number at the bottom of the container?
Answer: The NESCO website says it is BPA free...but it also says made in USA, which some users say it is printed made in China. :-(
Answer: The only number on the bottom of the unit is the pin number. Can you tell me what BPA means and I will see if I can help you.
Answer: Hi, found this number on the bottom, but I'm not sure if it's what you are looking for; P/N:00088
Q:
What is the difference between the 1040 and 1018?
Answer: Different circulation trays biggest thing heat and fan at top not digital dont think it has a timer really like my 1040 set temp and time and no worries once you get your times figured out im takeing my jerkry down to 5.5 or 5 so its a little more tender
Q:
Does the 1000 watts really equal to less processing time as Nesco claims? Avg 8 hrs for lrg fruits ??
Answer: Yes, I can dehydrate strawberries in less than 5-6 hrs where most machines will say 8-12
Q:
What is the model number for extra trays, screens and fruit roll trays for the Nesco 1040 gardenmaster Pro?
Answer: The model # for the "Add-A-Tray" for this dehydrator is TR-2P, set of two, $24.95, which states in my book that these will fit the 1000 series. As far as the "screens" and the "fruit roll trays", you have to just order them according to the size of your dimensions, either the 13" or 15". There is not a model 3 for these. I hope this has helped. Let me know if I can assist in any other manner.
Q:
Europe has a different power system (220V). Does the Nesco for for Europe too?
Answer: This dehydrator works great. I bought a couple extra trays that have come in handy. As far a power for Europe, this dehydrator is 110V in America
Answer: I don't think so
Q:
Do the trays clamp together and to the top? It has a handle that I thought was to use to pick up. I cannot find out to clip trays together
Answer: No the handle only lifts the top off the trays but you can't carry it all together with it.
Answer: Nope handle is to just make it easier to lift drying unit off cause its a little heavier. Everything just sits on top of each other
Answer: There are no clip but they stag on top each other, great buy for me. I use this machine a lot and love it.
Q:
What are the pros and cons of having 1,000 watts versus 600 or 700 like other Nescos have? Thanks!
Answer: I didn't see any advantage as my dehydrator couldn't handle 18 trays, food in lower trays spoiled
Q:
I would like to order extra trays. Which ones will fit this model?
Answer: Mine were very old Gardenmaster trays from another model. Much nicer trays too -- tighter spokes.
Answer: Nesco TR-2 Add-A-Tray fits all Gardenmaster Series.
Answer: I'm really sorry but I don't know
Q:
Can I safely dehydrate chicken without the use of oven first and without risk of salmonella?
Answer: I wouldn’t try it!
Q:
can I dry cooked rice and lentils in this one? can I place aluminum foil instead of the rollup sheets so that the food doesn't spill from the trays?
Answer: They have a real fine mesh screen that comes with the unit. I haven't tried rice or lentils.
Q:
Has anyone tried dehydrating turmeric after you shred it in a food processor, how long to dry?
Answer: I have not personally tried drying fresh turmeric (genius idea!), but it will be rather wet so I would use the fruit leather guidelines. Use the solid plastic tray insert that comes with this, probably 135 degrees, start with 4 hours and see how it goes!
Answer: NO, but for meat and veggies, it works really well, much better than what I had!
Q:
why does the tray gets deformed after several use?
Answer: Hello,
Answer: Mine are fine after several uses.
Q:
can you use trays from the fd-61 with this?
Answer: I don’t think so.
Q:
How can i change fd-1040's temperature display units from fahrenheit to celsius?
Answer: It does not change from Fahrenheit to Celcius.
Answer: They do not change from Fahrenheit to Celsius only Fahrenheit check manufacturer of your product added check owner's manual
Answer: I do not remember, but I think I saw it in the manual.
Q:
my machine is not turning on... any advice?
Answer: I have a lot of trouble getting mine to turn on. I have to hit the switch dozens of times before it finally runs. Not sure if this is normal or just my unit. Once it turns on, it works great. Does anyone else have this problem?
Answer: When did it stop working? During the process or between swaps? Our first one had a motor failure for some unknown reason.
Q:
where is the Nesco FD-1040 1000-watt Gardenmaster Food Dehydrator actually made?? Some say USA others say this particular model is made in China...
Q:
Hello!! I have never had a dehydrator and i'd would like to know if it comsume a lot electricity?
Answer: Of course a 1000-watt heater will consume significant electricity. At fruit-drying temperature (135F), the heating element seems to be on about 1/3 of the time, so drying for six hours is probably like running a 1000-watt space heater for 2 hours. Pro-tip: if you live in a cooler climate, dry stuff in the winter, and the extra heat from the dehydrator warms your house, replacing other heat sources. That way, the incremental electricity cost really is negligible.
Answer: Compared with other electronics, I'd say no. Put simply, our use on it did not drive up our electric bill.
Answer: Negligible.... it's an awesome dehydrator - I love the ability to set the requirements for the dehydrating....couldn't be happier.
Answer: Not that much. I take into account its less expensive to make my dogs snacks than buy them. And more healthier for us.
Answer: no, very little
Q:
Is that BPA free
Answer: I’m sorry, I have no idea.
Q:
Can this dry a whole persimon?
Answer: I have never tried to dry a whole persimmon. I peel them and dry the slices which works really well. The slices are about 1/4 inch. You could try it but I think it would take a long time.
Answer: This machine works very well on thinly, uniformly sliced items such as meat or fruits. If a persimmon is bigger than a golf ball, it won’t physically fit between the trays. Also it would take a very long time to dehydrate if left whole. Good luck.
Answer: I'm sure it would but,it would take days. An oven would be a better option.
Q:
How long does it take for the vegetable chips to get crunchy? Is the texture and taste similar to store bought chips?
Answer: The duration depends on the thickness of the slices and the kinds of fruits / vegetables used. Usually between 8 and 12 hours are required. I just try to make beet chips among the vegetables (but a lot of fruits). I made thick slices, it is dry, but not brittle. It's a bit the same texture a leather belt: it stands, it folds and it's dry.
Answer: Depends on the veggie. If you grew your own, it will take a little longer. It will also vary slightly depending on the number of trays you are using. If you get the "fresh" veggies at the store, make sure you rinse all the junk off them. Kale is about 4 hours (i.e., curly kale), sliced tomatoes about 12 hours on the average. They are as crunchy as what you buy in the store and much tastier. We take sliced tomatoes and add a little salt and pepper and use them as snacks or crush them into powder and make a soup by adding hot water. Seriously, this is the best dehydrator I have ever owned.
Answer: It's approx. 6-8 hrs depending on the thivkness. What u should know is they won't be chips. Chips need to b cooked via oven or deep fat fried. What u will have is dehydrated food. Add liquid to dehydrated food and the food comes alive again but n the raw state. U R only taking the liquid out. U R not cooking it.
Answer: Mine worked for about 15 seconds and died, so I really can't recommend the product, sorry.
Answer: I don't know. I purchased this as a gift.
Q:
how long does it take to make jerky?
Answer: It really depends on meat thickness, spacing in trays, etc., but I use 10 trays right now and the jerkey is done in about 4-6 hours @ 160
Answer: We prefer to grind up our meat for jerky and then use a jerky gunto do strip jerkey on the dehydrater. On average 3 to 4 hours is good but it may depend on your preferred toughness of jerky.
Answer: We have used up to six trays of 1/8 inch slices (sliced by butcher) of London broil. This takes about 4 to 5 hours.
Answer: About 8 to 10 hours for thin sliced tri tip. Full power.
Answer: I do six hours @ 145 degrees
Answer: Depends of thickness, 8/10 hours
Q:
Does it turn off automatically? Or does it beep and need to be turned off manually?
Answer: The Nesco FD-1040 Gardenmaster Foid Dehydrator turns itself off automatically at the end of the time cycle
Answer: It turns off automatically. You set the time and temperature and it takes care of the rest.
Answer: It turns off automatically
Answer: It turns off automatically.
Answer: Turns off automatically
Answer: yes, automatically
Answer: It shuts down once the time runs out.
Q:
I cannot decide if I want the 500 watt or the 1000 watt. What is your opinion and how does it affect your electric bill?
Answer: The higher the frequency means the more efficient the machine is, cook faster and a lot better. Crispier, drier. The lower the wattage the longer it takes and things come a little soggier.
Q:
Is this unit (with increased power and timer) worth the price bump from the FD75A unit?
Answer: Absolutely ! This unit has performed way above expectations, and the timer is a must -have .
Answer: absolutely! it has performed way above expections :)
Q:
The energy consume depends from the temperature? I think it's a lot of energy 1000 watts :/ what do you think?
Answer: 1000 watts is a lot of energy but it works great and we haven't had to rotate trays during drying. I'm sure heat level is a factor in the wattage used. If you are concerned about energy usage, you can look online to see how much money drying will cost you in energy. Charging my electric car costs me only 2 to 3 dollars per each full charge in San Francisco to give you an idea.
Answer: It is definitely a lot of energy; preserving food is not the most economical way to do things. I think the advantage is that you don't have to do it for very long compared to some of the others--it works fast--but it is certainly not energy efficient in any sense.
Answer: The higher wattage also allows items to dry quicker. Using a lower wattage unit will result in much longer wait times. Don't think I've had any change in our normal electric bill because of the higher wattage unit.
Answer: its ok for me
Q:
Can it be used outside? Bugs?
Answer: Yes it can be used outside as long as you have power outside. I would not suggest leaving it over night or for extended periods of time. There should not be an issue with bugs getting into the machine.
Answer: If you have power, it will work. I’ve used it in the garage no problem. I suppose if you live in an area with lots of bugs, I think they could get inside the machine.
Answer: In the summer, I use it outside so that I do not heat up my house. I have not had problems with bugs, like yellow jackets. I brink it in at night so that I do not have problems with raccoons.
Answer: i always put it outside (like garage) when it in used because noisy and smell that definitely not good inside the house.
Answer: I gave it as a gift.
Q:
do the trays from an old garden master 2400 work on this one?
Answer: If it is the FD-1010 model garden master pro then it should, that is the one I had before.
Answer: Measuring from the outer edge of the tray , it measures 15 1/4" in diameter. Beyond that I can't help.
Q:
is it suitable for 220V region
Answer: Does anybody know it works with 220V?
Answer: No
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can I get a unit with a 110/240 vold switchable power supply?
Q:
what is the vertical height between trays?
Answer: Standard trays for several of their models. About one inch.
Answer: It's just slightly more than an inch.
Answer: I have not measured it but it is about 2"
Answer: 1"
Answer: At least a couple of inches
Q:
do you have to precook meat with this dehydrator?
Answer: I have not precooked the meat when I am drying it.
Answer: I do not use this for meat. There should be something on the internet on this subject. Plenty of hunters use this product.
Answer: I do not precook when making it for my dogs.
Q:
Does this garden master come with any trays? the description is a little confusing. tia
Answer: Yes, the dehydrator comes with 4 trays. Extra trays are available for purchase separately.
Answer: Yes, it comes with 4 trays.
Answer: When I bought mine, their was a choice of how many trays came with the unit.4 is the standard, but 8 was also available for more $.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Does this have a timer, temp control, and on/off switch? When will it be available again?
Answer: does it have an timer
Q:
How many trays come with unit and what is the part no for add on trays
Q:
are the trays dishwasher safe?
Answer: The box says that the trays can be immersed in water for easy clean up. I do not have a dishwasher so have not put them in a dishwasher.
Answer: Yes, according to the info; however, they don't fit in my dishwasher, so I have not tried. They are very easy to clean, though.
Answer: yes.
Answer: I don’t know, I hand wash mine. They are too big to fit in my dish washer.
Answer: I run mine through the dishwasher. So far, so good.
Answer: I wouldn't trust them to be.
Answer: Yes they are.
Q:
Has anyone in Australia bought one of these? Does it have the right plug etc?
Answer: The plug that comes with the dehydrator has a 2 parallel flat prongs (for USA). I do not know if you use a 2 round prongs or 2 flat-angled prongs. If you have 220 volts electricity in Australia, then you need a heavy duty voltage converter. The travel voltage converter kit is for personal appliances only. I hope this helps.
Answer: The machine work perfectly under the specification down in USA. It comes with an booklet and directions. You will need for shure more trays
Q:
Are the trays dishwasher safe?

Product reviews of Nesco Gardenmaster Food dehydrator, One Size, White
Mark : NESCO Products are GREAT
I bough my first NESCO food dehydrator about 15 years ago. I use it to dry peppers, tomatoes and herbs. Occasionally beef jerky. My original version was a bottom fan version. It is/was terrific! Dried my produce and herbs flawlessly. Alas, recently the fan started to lose speed (velocity?). After 15 years, I could not complain. I just bought this "top down" fan dehydrator. The digital control is great. Much nicer than the previous analog dial. And the size is compatible with my previous dehydrator, so I can still use the 4 trays that I already have. For my money, Nesco makes the best products on the market. High quality at a very reasonable price. Don't hesitate to purchase this!
A. Griffin : This really works well
This works well, but do not let it fall it will brake. The other thing is I wish it was square.

POPs : works great
I have used it three times to make jerky. Just set the temp and time and it shuts off,and can pause to check on what ever you are drying. I think it works great.
Alexa : +Exchanged and Both Dehydrators Click
Bought this to dehydrate fruit and greens. The first dehydrator I received worked great on the first batch I dehydrated. When I turned it on for the next batch, it started making a loud clicking sound. I thought it may have been an apple making the noise, but it was coming from the motor and so worried it would start a fire I turned it off. I decided to process a replacement after reading what Nesco had written on another persons review who had a similar problem. When I received the replacement I plugged it in and the first thing it does is start clicking. But it wasn't as loud as the previous dehydrator. I believe the product is getting damaged during shipping as it is shipped in it's regular box with no additional protection. The only thing protecting it inside is a very thin piece of cardboard. The dehydrator it's self does a good job with the fruits I put in it. I just wish I received one that functions properly.
KD Graham : great
I enjoy the fact that it shuts off after the drying is finished.
jim : Gardenmaster Dehydrator - Mostly made in USA
I had a dehydrator years ago and didn't know what to do with it so I gave it away and I'm glad I did because this is a much better unit. This is not for the lazy. It takes more work than stopping at the grocery store or fast food to prepare, dry and store the final product. So if you don't have the time or energy, I recommend passing on this.
A co-worker at work makes jerky and because of the high cost in the stores, I knew I had to give it a whirl. I started looking for the best value and accessories and this unit caught my eye. So far, I have dried, apples, carrots, cilantro, oregano. As my garden starts producing, I expect this will get a lot more use! Can't wait for fall when apples are ready to make fruit roll ups.
Pros: Timer, timer , timer and shut-off. this is a must have in my opinion
Top mounted heater unit. No worries about the bottom getting spills or dirty
Easy to clean trays. Just wipe off with soap, water and cloth
Each tray seems to dry at about the same rate. Top may be slightly quicker being closer to the heating element
Easy to read to set temp and time for what is being dried
Mostly made in USA. This is always a plus for me
Cons: Really none so far. If I was to list anything, I think it's a little large, warm and noisy (not terribly so) so I set it up in the garage.
Bought 2 extra trays because four really aren't enough
Not really a con, but as I mentioned, it is a little time consuming. But what isn't if you want something great.
Can't speak to the jerky spice as I made my own recipe after reading many on line. And my jerky was the bomb!

Little old Susie from AL : Wonderful dehydrator.
I have been using this item for some time now. It works reliably and is just what I wanted. I like that there are expansion products. I'm impressed by the many dehydrating temperatures available and a good timer system.
Jerry R. : Works great and has been reliable for 3 years
For the past three years, we've run this every two weeks to dehydrate about 12 lbs of diced chicken to make treats for a large dog. We run it at 165 for about 16 hours to fully dehydrate the chicken because we pack everything onto 6 trays. We then run the trays and the "clean-a-screen" mats through the dishwasher. After 3 years of this routine, some of the mats are slightly cracked, but very usable and the dehydrator itself is holding up fine. I've been very happy with this machine.
John G : Finally, a dehydrator that works
Makes jerkey and dried fruit like a champ. I have run it for about 48hrs with no issues, so better than the other two I got.
crystal mendoza : Love it!
Love this thing! Set the timer and go to bed lol
AJ : Great Food dehydrator
I have used this item with no problems. Easy to clean. I have dehydrated many items with great success such as jerky, fruits, and kale chips.
Rainkatt : Heating element went out right after warranty ended
At first I was very happy with my new dehydrator, loved the settings, dehydrated quite a bit of food, was going to buy some extra trays even. Today I noticed after several hours the load of sliced mushrooms were still not dry! Mushrooms areusuallydry in less than an hour. Then on further inspection, I realized there was no heat.
I looked up the warranty info, and found there is only a one year warranty on this product. And I bought it 13 months ago.
For over one hundred dollars, I would expect a 2 or 3 yr warranty.
Very disappointed, after reading other reviews with similar problems I no longer have faith in any Nesco products.
I'm going to buy another dehydrator, but I guarantee it WONT be a NESCO one!
A hundred bucks is a lot for most people's budgets right now, I'm a very unhappy customer and will be sure to share my experience on the prepper groups I belong to.
Nesco, it's just a fan!, with a heating element, how hard is it to make one that kasts?
Lover of Dogs : Works good but not for long
I bought the first one in Dec 2018. By Jan 2020 it had died. A fluke I figured. I bought a second one in Jan 2020. It is now Dec 2020 and again it has died. Averaging a new one every year and $100 each. The controls were fine and when it worked it was good, but the quality isn't there.
Traveling Jack : Exccellent dehydrator
My first dehydrator and I think an excellent choice. So far I have made two batches of raisins from organic grapes, dehydrated apple and banana slices, and most recently I have been soaking raw nuts, then placing them on the dehydrator racks with sea salt and drying them at 105 degrees for about 10 hours. The nuts puff up from the water soaking of about 8 hours and when dehydrated with sea salt sprinkled on top are delicious and healthful.
There is a lot more that can be done with the dehydrator but I am very pleased at this point and am glad I purchased it. It is well made, extremely easy to use, and easy to clean. It makes a whirring sound like a fan (which it is) but not a problem for me since I place it on the kitchen counter, or my laundry room counter, well away from my sleeping quarters. Actually it would be good white noise for sleeping.
Patricia Ochoa Silva : Do not I repeat do not buy this appliance
I have tried several times to use this machine according to instructions and according to feedback from other users to no avail. It takes hours and hours and all you see are fruits going bad not dehydrating got it this is easily the worst purchase of kitchen appliances I have ever made in my life.
Mimmio : Newer isn't always better
I have owned an american harvester/nesco food dehydrator for years (20) and wanted to order more trays for drying our abundance of apples. Being no longer available, I decided to purchase another Dehydrator, the Nesco FD-1040 Gardenmaster. This dehydrator has more watts and is able to handle more trays, however it does not work as well as the previous model, comparing side by side, using the same amount of trays and uniform apple slices. The former, less powerful dryer has a fan at the bottom, a temperature dial. The apples dried quicker and more crisply, which is how we like them. Also, the plastic trays on the older model were sturdier so I hope this model will hold up like the old one.
Y. J. : 1 star
It came with some dark red colored, dried liquid on the outer surface of tray. One minute after opening the box, I repacked to return. Nesco needs quality control.
Deana K. : We decided to go for the option of having the timer and temperature settings with our first dehydrator and are very happy we did
We use this at least weekly to dehydrate all types of fruits and it never disappoints.
We decided to go for the option of having the timer and temperature settings with our first dehydrator and are very happy we did. It's a simple "set it and forget it" which is nice because we usually have it on in the basement or out of the kitchen area. It tends to be a little noisey (I would liken it to a standard bathroom fan noise) but nothing unbearable. It is also on the larger side, which I don't mind because you can fit A LOT more in it.
We opted to add on a few more trays as well, and I am glad we did. Adding on the trays meant being able to dehydrate more fruit in less time- and the machine didn't even bat an eye at having an extra 4 trays on it! These are the trays we bought - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004W4VA/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_45 - with the expansion we can now dehydrate up to 8 apples (10 if they are smaller) in 1 batch.
We have yet to try jerky - but I am sure it will be just as great. Once we do, I will update this review. Thanks!
i2whl4fn : GREAT AMERICAN MADE PRODUCT
I bought this item because 1. Made in America, 2. Price. This is the third dehydrator I've owned over the years. The first American made dehydrator. The quality of this machine is hands down better than those cheap units I've owned before. This is a great machine.
Alex : Works as expected
Performance: It works as expected. Go watch a video review. There are lots out there, and this is a staple of food dehydrators, so I won't review it in depths. Some notes though:
- If you want the most out of this high-powered 1000w unit per drying cycle, you need to get more trays, which are not cheap. Otherwise buy a unit that uses less power. This is not a negative, this unit is just built to dry a lot of food at once.
- the trays will not fit easily in the dishwasher unless they are laid flat... I hate dishes.
- read the book that some with it so that you dry things in batches that dry at the same rate, otherwise you will have half your trays done and the other still moist.
Kurt : Easy to use, has programmable timer
The title says it all. It is pretty easy to use. In addition to a programmable temperature setting, it also has a programmable timer, which is handy.
Mzspaz : Awesome Product!! Make your own Pet Treats.
Awesome!!!! So far the only thing I have used this for is my pets. yes, I am that crazy lady who does all that stuff for my pets. I got tired of paying big $$$$$ for high end treats for my dog and cats that didn't have chemicals in it. I decided to make my own chicken jerky.
This is great. I wait for my local "Sprouts" to have their boneless chicken breasts on sale go and buy a few packages and slice them up thin. I wear a pair of latex gloves and use a serrated bread life. I found this works best for me. I start at the top of the breasts and begin to slice thin sheets of chicken. I spray the trays with a bit of TJ's coconut spray and that is all. I also make salmon tarts at the same ay. Costco sells Wild caught boneless skinless fresh salmon. It is so much cost friendly. One bag at my pet store of a high end treat like this costs about 25-31.00.
For that I can make about 4-5 bags of my own. It takes about an hour of prep time and the dehydrator does the rest. I Store them in ziploc baggies within a bit of uncooked rice at the bottom to keep out moisture.
I like to give out as gifts to my friends and family with pets.
Much healthier for my pets.
IF you have a FOOD SAVER Sealer good way to store long term.
Maybe I will get around to do dehydrating something for me soon. :O)
M. Baldridge : Works Great
It was pricier than others and we bought 2 sets of extra trays but you get what you pay for. We've already done fruit to make granola, and beef jerky. Has a temp and a timer function which allowed us to set and forget. Since it's new, we dialed back on the time and checked it regularly as we didn't want to over-dry, then added more time as needed. Jerky was right on the time. We REALLY stacked it full of fruit so it took longer than suggested but we just assume it was because of the volume of fruit we were doing. The heat cycles off and on an a regular basis to keep the temp constant. We ran a digital thermometer on the air exit and it was about 5 degrees low, which would be expected as the water draws the heat in and lowers the temp. Clean up was easy. Soaked the fruit trays for 30 min and brushed off (we didn't use the liners, just put the fruit right on the trays). Used Pam on the trays before adding the jerky and they came right up, and washed right off.
Donald Bennett : Great Job
This works perfectly! No problems at all. Glad I bought it.
Joshua Glowzinski : I was excited to get this. But after using it a few times I have lost the excitement.
This is the first time I’ve had a dehydrator. I looked on the net to find one that was good. I found this one. So, I got it. It took me a bit of time to use it. I first tried jerky. When I took the meat out, I chewed it and found it was so over done that I could not even chew threw it. Yet other parts were tender and ok. So why did that happen? I concluded that the thing does not heat evenly. Try again I thought. So, I picked stuff from our garden. Lemongrass and some other herbs. I tried a green that was small. Maybe parsley. So, I put it in and filled every tray. Even two extra ones I got. I looked hours later, and everything was still damp. It didn’t look worked at all. More time. Some were dehydrated. Others were burnt and some still looked like nothing had happened. Back in. I am talking for days at 95-110. Some STILL didn’t get done. I can’t understand how small greens don’t get dehydrated at those temps after all that time. Again, I thought and the only thing I can guess is that the machine does not heat evenly at all. Stuff towards the bottom may get done. The last tray. But the other stuff seems to be in some sort of dead zone.
I tried to get a partial refund. I got the thing less than 90 days ago. But it said my return window was closed. Amazon said they would give me a %10 refund. I paid $90 for the thing. Then they said they would let me return it as a one-time thing. I didn’t want to do that for the fact that it is against their policy. I don’t want anyone to break the rules for me. So, I will get %10 back.
Others have used the thing and seem to love it. But for me, if I can’t count on it to work right when it comes to evenly dehydrating things I put in, things as simple as greens from a garden, then how can I trust to leave the thing on when I am not home? I was so excited about this. I just don’t feel this dehydrator is at all worth the money.

North to the Future : Worth it
Makes some good jerky. Could also just be my marinade. But it's easy to use, works drying 8lbs of sliced meat on 12 trays easily and fills the house with the delicious smell of animal flesh. Haven't tried it with fruit yet but don't doubt that it will work fine. Happy I went with a 1000 watt model over lesser power. My wife used to give nutrition classes to schools and lower income families and this is the model she used during some of them.
Yaqina : Great buy
Simple to use, durable and quiet. Makes dehydrating garden veggies and herbs a breeze.
Rosella : Motor on Top May Make the Difference
I've been using my new Nesco FD-1040 for about a month. This is my third Nesco Dehydrator. My previous two both had the motor and fan on the bottom (FD-1010) and each of them burnt out in less than two years (but lasted longer than the 1 year warrantee). I dehydrate fruits and vegetables all summer and fall and found these dehydrators reliable and easy to use but they didn't last very long. This time I got the top mounted motor and fan in the hopes that the new design will last longer and I got a 2-year appliance protection plan.
So far, so good. I am using 20 trays at time, the maximum the system will take, and while it is taking a little longer than the older system, the FD-1040 is working fine. The top is a little heavy and I am finding that with 20 trays I am having to rotate the trays in the stack to get even drying (top trays and the outer edges dry more quickly) so I am only giving it 4 stars.
I will post another review in about a year (or sooner if this model burns out sooner).
Icemonkey : Super Fast
This dehydrator is simple and easy to use. The great thing about it is it is FAST. Some dryers take days to dry items. This one is done in a few hours. You can hear the fan running but it’s not that loud. Best purchase I’ve made in a while.
Julie : Easy to use and works wonderfully
Have used this product for a few months and I am thrilled with this dehydrator. Motor on the top, easy to use and very versatile. I have dehydrated so many items since I made this purchase. Saving food and easy to clean and store. I am to nervous to can food so I dehydrate it and store in glass jars with a silica pack and am so very happy.
AW : Horrible quality and likely a fire hazard...
I've now ordered two of these units trying to get a good one and both have had to be sent back. They are utter junk. Both units had stuck fans as a result of the heating element assembly not being secured to mounting posts. The first unit sounds like a helicopter due to the blades making an impact against the heating element assembly. The second unit also had one section of the heating elements completely burned out. What is more frightening is the quality of the design. A string is literally used to hold the section of the heating element that runs to the fuse! I have no idea how this would run for an extended amount of time without catching on fire. I had heard that these units were made in the USA but the label on my unit clearly shows that it is made in China. I would guess that this is another example where the positive feedback reflects an earlier fine product that has now went to crap. I'm returning all my accessories that I had purchased in anticipation of using this particular brand due to the shoddy workmanship. I would be very careful if I purchased this unit in the past year or so! I do give huge props to Amazon as they did a great job taking care of me and accepting the return.
Don : very nice unit.
easy to use, does a better job than another one I purchased from Cabelas.
I like having the timer,
I did order additional trays.
hi : Planned Obsolescence
Bought this two years ago and now it only has one temp: fry bacon. If you're into getting financially assaulted by purchasing garbage with dysfunctional parts from China, then this is the dehydrator for you. My last one went 15 years before giving up the ghost.
KD Graham : great
I enjoy the fact that it shuts off after the drying is finished.
Mike from Jersey : Nesco FD-1000 Gardenmaster Food Dehydrator
I got this dehydrator three days ago and it's been used everyday since. I've never made any type of jerky before and the stock Nesco flavor is just okay using lean ground beef but making jerky from muscle meat and making your own sauce mix from recipes online this thing really shines.
The first day we over did the spices and man that stuff was killer hot and the second day we backed off with some of the HOT spices which was good but not as good as the hot stuff is. Today we did some pineapple chunks which was far better than the dried sugary retail products.
On the control panel there are only four buttons start/stop, increment UP, increment DOWN, time/temp and the L.E.D. display. Once it's plugged in there is continuous power to the unit until it's unplugged meaning the LED's remain lit. first press of the time temp button lets you set the temp, the second press of time/temp lets you set the cycle time in 30 minute increments using the UP/DOWN buttons.
Once you set your temp and duration you then just press start and wait for it to time out and turn off the heating mechanism. It is a well made product that won't require watching (but I wouldn't leave home with it running) and to be fair, I wouldn't leave home with a crock pot running either.
If you get one of these you'll also be shortly looking for a food sealing outfit if you don't already own one. Together these will save you some serious money if you have a larger household. I really should have looked into this a long time ago.
EDIT: Quick Start/Tips/Lessons Learned!
Having used this dehydrator a few weeks now and mixed a few different flavor mixes I thought I'd update this review to remove some of the mystery in making good jerky and help newbies starting out.
Making jerky can be done 2 ways. By using lo-fat ground beef, or muscle cut meats i.e. top round, bottom round, or London broil cuts.
If you are using ground beef along with the Nesco seasoning kits you'll be in good shape. However when you adventure to make muscle cut jerky with a 'Sweet & Spicy' recipe from allrecipe dot com. After mixing all the wet & dry ingredients it didn't occur to me that I was missing a crucial ingredient to the mix! It was 'The Cure' that comes in the Nesco kits!
So if your mixing your own flavoring be sure to purchase some brand of meat curing salt that has 4 to 6% of Sodium Nitrite (if you plan to vacuum seal and freeze your jerky.) This isn't normally a problem since the jerky you make will will be quickly consumed by family and friends. If your going to freeze it use the salt and also get the oxygen absorber packets to throw in your vacuum seal pouches or it will spoil rapidly.
Another observation I found was that the ground beef jerky was much more softer than the muscle cut jerky even extruded at twice the thickness of top round slices.
Another observation was that the times quoted made the jerky more tuff and to compensate to get a more softer and juicy kind of jerky I lowered the time from 7 to 4 hours. It makes the flavor more pronounced. If you have additional/extra trays in your dehydrator then just increase the time.
Now that there is abundant low cost jerky around I put some in the food processor and reduced it to shred and put that into both baked and pinto beans while they cook. It works pretty well in those side dishes.
If you like it hot, forget adding extra measures of peppers, and tweak the Ginger.
If you like it sweeter, tweak the pineapple juice.
Pat W : Wish I had purchased this sooner.
Love my new dehydrator! I am in the process of trying it out. I have dehydrated several types of vegetables and herbs. Can't hardly wait till Fall when there will be apples to dry. Found a lot of great informative videos on line to help with the how to. I want to become less dependent on my freezer. It is so easy to lose a fortune in food with a power outage. I also purchased a pressure canner to help toward this goal.
i2whl4fn : GREAT AMERICAN MADE PRODUCT
I bought this item because 1. Made in America, 2. Price. This is the third dehydrator I've owned over the years. The first American made dehydrator. The quality of this machine is hands down better than those cheap units I've owned before. This is a great machine.
Amazon Customer : Very Disappointed
I had such high hopes for this product. Did a lot of research before finalizing which product to go with and read many reviews. I am one of those who rarely leaves reviews. And honestly, I've purchased several products before that had quite terrible reviews and ended up being completely fine for me.
Unfortunately, it seems this company could use some work with quality control. Upon receiving my order, I immediately started a simple test dehydrating some mushrooms. I'm the kind of person that reads all directions and warnings before starting, so I followed protocol in the manual to a T. The unit turned on and stayed on, but then cycled on and off. I wondered if perhaps this was normal for this unit once it reached the target temperature. 20 minutes later, I realized the unit never toggled back on and was cold. I tested all potential problems (trying different outlets, using other appliances with the same outlets to confirm they work, leaving the unit unplugged for a time and trying again, etc). The timer still counted down and the display indicated that it was heating, but the fan and heating element never turned back on.
One faulty unit is no problem - I understand things happen. I was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which I could exchange for a new unit, and had a second one at my door a couple days later. Unfortunately, this one had a problem with the LED screen. The first digit did not light up (pictured). Given this issue, I did not even test it to see if the unit would heat up as I knew I did not want to keep a product with a defective display.
After much consideration, I decided not to try for a third and simply asked for a refund. I had already wasted time repackaging these items and returning them to a UPS store, and I did not wish to continue this revolving door.
The product seems great. If you get one that works, I'm sure it is a fine product. However, receiving two bad apples in a row makes me wary.
It seems the corporate playbook is to respond to these negative reviews with something along the lines of: "Please contact us to resolve this issue." While I can and will do that, I have already wasted time with two defective products and have no desire to waste more time on the phone. A five star product requires proper quality control. Unfortunately, I doubt I will trust Nesco products moving forward.
missjm : New2Dehydrating
I'm new to dehydrating, so I chose this dehydrator for the price and good reviews. I used it to dehydrate celery and was happy with the outcome. It's also light weight, easy to clean, and has a timer that will shut off the dehydrator after specified set time. I would recommend this product.
Amazon Customer : Great for prepping quick, healthy foods!
This is my first food dehydrator. I am still working out how to cut fruit so it dries faster, but so far I am very pleased with the results. Strawberries were a cinch because I used a hardboiled egg slicer to cut them with even thickness. Applesauce mixed with apricot puree came out fine, but I want to find a better recipe before I make fruit roll-ups again. Pineapple chunks took a while to finish, but I've been eating them like candy. I've dried a couple other things as well, but my favorite thing I made so far was a broccoli-kale powder. I blanched the broccoli first, and dried them both until they were crispy. Then I put them into a blender. I add a teaspoon of this powder to smoothies in the morning for an extra boost of vitamins and iron.
Over all, I like it because it works quickly and quietly. The timer is a helpful feature too, but I haven't had to worry about over-drying food.
Don : very nice unit.
easy to use, does a better job than another one I purchased from Cabelas.
I like having the timer,
I did order additional trays.
MoeRoe from MA : Works Great!
I prefer this over the ExCaliber I had. The big black box ExCaliber is ugly, seems to take W-A-Y too long to dry everything, and is aggravatingly NOISEY! I prefer this model. I prefer the white color and the size of this. I ordered two extra trays for it from their website and it's just the right size for me. My only regret is that I can't find more time to use it. Everything I've dried with it tastes great and the heat is evenly distributed from top to bottom without having to babysit everything and turn them over Etc. It's great having the automatic shut off feature. I'm very pleased I chose this one after months of searching and agonizing over the decision. It's a beauty! You can just use a knife to cut your fruits and vegetables …BUT… it's MUCH better to do yourself a favor and get some kind of slicer or chop them up in a food processor first. To do apples, I bought the large Paderno slicer from Amazon. Wow! razor thin apples in no time with no danger of cutting my fingers like with a mandolin. Y U M!
troy : Usually have no issues with these dehydrators
Dehydrator was doing great, then after about 4 weeks of use the unit sparked and popped one day when I went to turn it on. Unfortunately there is only a 30 day return policy so now im stuck with a very expensive plastic paper weight.

She loves this unit! She is excited to add a few more trays. She has done bell peppers, pineapple, apples, strawberries, zucchini. She is having so much fun!
