Questions about Berkley Dough Bait Mold
Q:
A 12/16 so is it 3/4 '' ball ???
Answer: Hi, they come in a pair and the 12/16 refers to the size of hooks. One can accommodate #12 treble hook and smaller and the other similar #16 hooks and smaller. They work good and fom a perfect floating powerboat ball without much mess or waste.
Q:
what size and hook used
Answer: There are two sizes in the package. I use the smaller of the two most of the time for trout. I think we use number 12 or 14 treble hooks. We love them.
Answer: I use a size 14 treble hook with the larger mold. Not sure about the size for the small mold, as I haven't used that one yet.
Answer: Size 14 treble hook
Answer: any size
Product reviews of Berkley Dough Bait Mold
Amazon Customer : Works as advertised
These make perfect balls with the trout dough as long as you put the hook in afterward forming them up. I find that the balls fall apart too easily if you try to mould the bait and hook in one go. Not a big deal though.
The Wizard : Three Stars
ok
Amazon Customer : Useless.
Bait sticks to these clamps more than the hook. Save a dollar and use your fingers.
Zachariah Andrews : Best deal
Makes it a lot easier to use
Duncan : Saves money on dough bait!
Makes it super easy to float a size 16 or 14 treble hook, without using too much bait. Works to catch small catfish too.
brother moe : but I like to use it to scoop bait out of the ...
the bigger one kinda works, Some of the power bait sticks to it though, but I like to use it to scoop bait out of the jar.
LEM : Works great - just what I needed.
Works as expected. Compact and easy to store in my fishing gear.
Digital : Some times its better to do it by hand
Dough gets stuck a lot of times. Some times its better to do it by hand. But it does get the exact portion every time.
Ana : Bait mold
No more stinky hands and 2 different size molds
Michael Stephen Fitzpatrick : Dissapointing
Not worth using. Cheese and Power Bait stick to it.
Kyle : Good ideas with Flaws
Not impressed. Good idea with flaws. Bait will not stay on the hook when you are trying to remove the ball from the mold. Still gets on my wife's hands which is what she wanted to avoid. i will not buy this again

great for teaching my kids how to mold thew Powerbait when i took them fishing . good product
Amazon Customer : If you fish with dough often, the amount of dough saved will allow it to pay for itself
I used this with power bait to fish for stocked rainbow trout. This helped keep my hands clean and dry when it was only 50-55 degrees out. I found I could get the power bait tight on the hook using less dough than if I used my hands. Only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that I wish this came with a mold that would fit a size 6 octopus circle hook for slip bobber fishing in deep lakes. But this works well for size 8 - 12 hooks. Below is a picture of a trout I caused with the help of this mold.

James from Boise : Allowsfor better control of Powerbait ball size
I initially got this item thinking it would help with reducing the amount used and to keep my hands clean. while it does help with creating a consistent sized bait ball, I found that the non-stick surface was really a double-edge sword. It allowed for easy release but sometimes the bail ball would slide out and hit the ground picking up dirt...the deeper into the Berkley trout powerbait jar I went the more this seemed to happen. I've only used this on one trip and I'm sure there has to be a knack to get this thing working better, so I intent to figure it out on future trips. I did find that the hit 'n runs some of the trout attempted did not dislodge the formed bait ball where on the hand-formed balls they would something pop apart at the seams that occur in the hand-forming process.
Overall, a nice idea that in theory should help to conserve the powerbait and reduce fish hit 'n runs that knock the bait loose. For the price it's really hard to not justify getting one to just try out as it costs less than a lot of jigs or a package of treble hooks. I'm sure with more practice it will be a useful tool in my tackle box.

Price was great - very useful for grabbing the live bait series ... i bought these with the live bait binder for less than 20 dollars and couldn't be happier.

Didn't work, and spooged out powerbait around the sides of the mold. First cast I lost the bait. I went back to using my tried and true method that this gimmick didn't fix--my fingers.

Nik Lance : Yup! I wrote a review on this.
Keeps my hands clean. Nice tight balls! Stays on hooks! Fish requested that I tell the makers to have different shapes for them. They are getting tired of round balls.

Exactly as advertised. Works ok
grrrrrutah : Ladies (and guys with big fingers) gotta get it!
Just barely bought this, haven't used it in the field yet... but tried it at home and think I'm gonna like it! HATE getting trout bait under my nails (yeah I'm a girly girl who loves to fish!) where it usually hardens and need a jackhammer to get it out...this mold makes just the right size ball to disguise your hook, and is easier to use than the last trout mold I bought which was the tube shape you twist down into the bait to get a chunk. Can't wait to use this at the lake!
mls52 : Molds
Ok for what it is molds seem a little small

Anthony L. Williams : Mold That Bait
Made using Powerbait a breeze, doing it by hand can be a PITA for an occasional weekend warrior fisherman like myself and those I fish with. A little pricey for what it is but it gets the job done.
Ricardo : Another great tool

Kyle : If you fish with trout dough, you should order this
I know these molds seem like something so very simple, but they really do work.
Set of two, one for size 12 trebles and under and one for size 16 and under.
You basically set the shank of your hook on one side of the mold, (there is a V-notch where that goes) then scoop the trout dough with the other side until you have enough to make a ball. You then press it all together, remove the excess and slowly roll out your ball of trout dough from the mold with a hook inside. If you had enough of a gap to not make a full ball, add a bit more dough and re-press.
There is no super secret here, you just need enough dough on your hook to float it off the bottom. Many people don't put enough on so their dough/hook stay on the bottom. These make sure you have enough to float and also minimize your handling of the dough.
They're cheap, they work, if you fish with trout dough bait, I recommend picking up a set.

David Cook : Not what I thought
These are fine, but I still had to roll the dough bait. My hope was it would pack the ball and be useful in getting it on the hook. It did not work out that way. Just easier to roll it with your fingers.
Justin : It's cheap, buy It!
Not scared to get my hands dirty, but this product allows you to get uniform results with your powerbait. I use a size 16 treble and this mold allows me to get a well-packed "pellet" around the hook that won't fall off during casting, reeling back in, or if a trout decides to "hit" before chowing down. This product allows me to hit that sweet spot in buoyancy so I'm not sitting on the bottom or floating at the top of the water. Easy to use, don't overthink it. Fill half the mold (side with the slit), lay your hook in, slightly over-fill the other side of the mold, and press sides together. The excess bait will squeeze out and your usually left with a perfectly formed ball ready for casting. Yes, sometimes your hook will need re-positioning or it won't be perfectly covered, but it takes 5 seconds to redo the process. Honestly, I catch just as many fish but I waste a lot less powerbait because it doesn't fall off and I don't over apply anymore.

This thing doesn't really do on its own - every time I still have to manually detach the balls from the holes and just to roll it a bit more.
