What is the netting made of. Will it rust if used in salt water

Answer: Steel mesh. If rinsed after use, rusting is minimal.

Answer: Looks like zinc-plated mild steel. In time, I expect it will rust away.

Answer: I assume it's aluminum of sorts but I hose them off after each use, I crab with them all they time, it's so much better than your traditional trap.

Will this work for pulling fish up from say off a bridge or pier

Answer: I would recommend getting a bigger size basket and yes you can pull up fish with these types of baskets maybe a 2 man operation, one to pull in the fish, and another to get the basket under the fish ,to gut um up on the peir ... Happy Fishing from New Jersey!!!!!

Answer: Well, if you attract the fish with a bait tied to the net, and you can quickly pull it up, you may be able catch it.

Answer: Yes your best bet is cotton rope because the not stays tight, metal cages are the best because it's so much easier to shake a crab off the metal.

I'm looking for a small trap that a four year old could pull up by themselves. The ones we rent are too big. Would this work, what else should I get?

Answer: This is perfect and light weight, metal is better because you can shake the crabs right off, they hold on to the rope ones big time.

Answer: I returned it because it was too small for my application, but if I had to guess, its probably about 18 in on top and the bottom is roughly 12in.

How to stabilize the baits?

Answer: I tie the bait securely to the bottom/center of the net. Otherwise, the crabs will quickly carry the bait away. A good trick is to put the bait into a ladies nylon stocking and then tie the stocking to the net. That will prevent the crabs from tearing up the bait so it will last longer. The crab legs tend to get stuck in the nylon mesh so they can't get away when you're pulling the net up.

Answer: I use zip ties through the bottom of the trap. Works on chicken legs, necks and fish heads (go through the mouth and out the gill).

Answer: It is not weighted. It will sink flat on its own. Casting it requires a little finess to make it land in the water and sink properly. Weighting will make it sink more quickly and cast farther.

LO : Better than box or star style traps

Great crab trap. Easier to use and store than the box and star style traps. Tie a 6oz weight in the middle, use chicken legs as bait, attach a nylon rope and you are ready to crab at your location of choice. Just rinse with fresh water before storing to minimize rusting.

Metal crab nets are so much easier to flip the crabs out of and into a bucket as compared to the nylon crab nets that the crab get to tangled up in. In addition, the metal crab net sinks easier and quicker.

Used for crabbing in Grand Isle ,LA beach. Recommend to attach weights on the bottom of the net to prevent from floating due to ocean waves... replace the string to sizable braided rope about 50 ft long and attached to a floater like piece of styrofoam noodle or wood.

The cage is well built, but the string absolutely sucks. It broke before I even used the trap. Just replace the string and you'll be good to go!

First of all, this trap works. I bought two, and in an hour had four keeper crabs (dungeness and red rock) and a couple dozen throwbacks. Even caught a small spotted ratfish. So if you're looking to catch crabs on the cheap, this trap will definitely do it.

So why not five stars? First, it's a little on the small size, two keeper crabs and it's pretty much at its limit. Second, the way the mesh falls, the crabs seem to have a pretty easy time getting out. A few crabs were nearly out of the basket by the time I got them onto the pier, and I felt the pressure on the line drop off while hauling the trap up several times. But the traps that do a better job keeping the crabs in cost 3x-5x as much, so I'm only knocking off one star.

Bottom line, if you want to catch crabs and only want to spend $12, this is a good buy.
