Questions about Daiwa Silvercast A Spincast Reel
Q:
Which model of the Daiwa Silvercast-A series would be the best for a 6.5' river rod fishing for trout, bass etc?
Answer: I think the 100 would be the right size. I do not recommend any diawa silvercast, though, because my last two developed a groove in the pawl from line friction, quickly. Maybe A Zebco 33 would serve you better.
Answer: Depends on how big of fish. I would use it for most any fresh water fishing. Its a decent reel. I would buy again.
Answer: I bought the 80 and returned it a week later it broke. I have an older 100 that works fine. If you are going to catch catfish I would go with the 120 or 170.
Answer: None of them. I purchased two reals because of the reviews and ended up throwing them both away. Horrible, horrible reals!
Q:
What is the size of the line, pound test?
Answer: I believe it comes with 8 lb test line (but not sure - it could be 6 lb )
Answer: 12lb or 17lb test line on this reel .
Answer: Depends on the reel size, rule of thumb being the model number reflects the line size 80 is 8 pound test the 100 is 10 pound etc. They average about 70-80 yards capacity.
Answer: Depends on the reel size and diameter of the line. Line size from 6 lb. to 25 lb. can be used , depending on the silvercast reel you will be using. Smaller reel, lighter line,--- heavy reel, heavier line.
Answer: Lb of test is irrelevant, this reel is a P.O.S. do not purchase!
Answer: 10pound test line
Answer: The 170 can hold 14lb.17lb.or 20lb.....it comes spooled with 17lb mono. The 120 holds 10lb,12lb,or 14lb.mono and it comes spooled with 12lb.mono., the 100 can hold 8lb,10lb and 12lb mono and comes with 10 lb mono and the 80 can hold 6lb,8lb and 10lb mono and comes with 8lb mono.

Product reviews of Daiwa Silvercast A Spincast Reel
Frank Manuele : SC100A one of the best spincast reels I've ever owned - but...
I don't know about the other Daiwa series reel (smaller and larger than the 100A) but the 100A has a good drag, decent gear ratio and cast great but only if I use 8#test /4# diameter BRAID. Forget mono or any line that has memory issues (coiling and twist). Plus I make sure to wind the line BY HAND around the spool to make sure the line is even front to back. If wound by using the handle, only the center is thick with line and thin front and back of the spool creating snags within the cap. Also allowing a better casting distance is spraying the line p/u bell with silicone spray. Anyone own the SC100A and want to sell it, I would buy it from you. Senkosam
ace frehley : waste of money
never worked well, would hang up and not release line, waste of money
ROBERT SHEFFIELD : Reel
When i was growing up me and my dad only used Zebco 33 reels. The 33's are made of more plastic and will not work sometimes right off the shelf. Starting buying these, I have replaced all my reels that my Wife, Son, and Daughter uses to this.
Mike W : works fine,,,but
It works well, looks nice and well built, but... I ordered two and now I use only one. Why one you ask? The shaft that connects the handle is made of light metal, alluminium I think. well it broke where the handle screws on to the shaft, so I took the shaft from my other identical reel and fixed it. The other reels thumb relese, the pivoting plastic stud broke. I think if these 2 flaws were adressed you would have a top notched fishing reel. PS I am rough on rods & reels as they sit in the bed of my pick up truck, but there are rod and reels I have owned 10 plus year that are holding up fine in the same pick up bed.
Tab Whitaker : Four Stars
everything is good

scosmo451 : 4 years and going
I've had the 120 for four years now, Use mainly for bass with some catfish (and too many little ones). It has held up extremely well. Still smooth retrieval and great casting for a spincast. I've caught many hundreds of fish, including at least two days of over 60 fish that I can remember, without any failures of the reel. Usually have it on a 7 foot medium rod. I run mono in it, 10 and 12 lb. It is more sensitive to how you put line on than a 33, it seems. Too much resistance when adding line and it will reduce the casting potential more than a 33, in my opinion. I had this issue and pulled the line off the reel and put the same line back on and it worked fine. I don't see this as a fault with the reel. I use Zebcos, Abu Garcias, Quantums, Johnsons, Penns, Daiwas, Pfluegers - some close to 60 years old - and this is the reel I've used the most since buying. I do basic maintenance when needed and a major teardown, cleaning, and lubrication every year. No weird wear patterns show and all parts have held up very well. Even the cosmetics have held up well. I would not be surprised if this is still functional in 60 years. I don't think you could beat this for twice the price.
Amazon Customer : adequate low end reel
I knew this was an inexpensive reel but am still a little surprised about how much of the construction is plastic vs. metal. Crank handle will always be a little wiggly - no way to tighten it down past point of being looser than I might like. I guess you can "OK Boomer" this gen-xer but in the early 1990s a $30-buck Zebco would have been a lot more solidly built than this reel.
rick brown : Five Stars
Bought this as a replacement for one of my dads reels. Says it has smooth casting and reeling.
nunyo bidnez : Don't make the same mistake as me
I have tried to like these reels, but they are terrible. I bought two of the 120A models and both jam up constantly. You try to cast and they lock up...over and over. I've tried different line, cleaning them, oiling them, cursing them, praying for them...doesn't matter...they just suck. I have an old Daiwa reel from the 80's and it is still awesome, but clearly I shouldn't have bought these junkers. I would LOVE to ship them back and get my money back...heck, even half my money would be better than none. I wasted $60 on two of these, please don't make that same mistake.
jack : Diawa reels are always great for the money!
I love this reel! With the big opening it casts a Long way. Good drag. Exactly what I've come to expect from them the last 40 yrs I've bought them. Can't be beat for their nominal cost!
TMC : I don't recommend this product poor quality the first time I used ...
I don't recommend this product poor quality the first time I used the the reel(Diawa Silvercast 120) it hung up 1 out of every 6 casts!

Bradley G. Sepp : Flawed design, not pleased, high maintenance
Poor quality. Bought two for wife and kids and both wrapped the included line around the drive mechanism. On one reel this was only temporarily resolved by taking the spool completely off.. the inconvenience ruined multiple trips. Not as smooth as the three bearing design would suggest. Nothing but issues with these reels. High hopes to upgrade our button casters, but will not be buying Diawa again.

Eric Chrisman : 10 times better than this
DO NOT BUY THIS POS. The reel housing is too tight causing the line to bind and twist and...let's put it this way, this ended up in the trash, I couldn't even give this away because I feared the frustration of the new owner. Found a Zebco33 dated:1982 on Ebay, 10 times better than this!
