Questions about Food Dehydrator Hanging Food Pantrie Dehydration System Non Electric, Environmentally Friendly, Natural Way to Dry Foods. 5 tray Dehydrator
Q:
Where is the Food Dehydrator made from?
Answer: Living Whole Foods, Inc. Springville, Utah
Answer: mesh fabric and plastic. I live in Phoenix and had the dehydrator out all summer and it still look and feels good.
Answer: I don't know what you mean. Where was it manufactured?? Or what is it made from? I don't know the first. It's made from mainly polyester netting and zips up to keep bugs out. Should work OK; but we left ours outside one night and a raccoon tore it apart.
Q:
Can you use with little sun
Answer: I hang it inside at night so the morning moisture doesn't re-wet the food. I hang it under my back porch awning and let the breeze dry things. Too much sun will cook it rather than dry it.
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is the plastic bpa free?
Answer: yes
Q:
I live in Hawaii and it's fairly humid... Do you think this will still work well?
Answer: I use it in the summers in Ohio which are very humid and it works fine. I hang it outside in the partial shade and bring it inside at night. Outside it's warmer and there is always a partial breeze, which helps. However if you leave it outside at night in a humid environment it will not do well.
Answer: My wife uses this tool for fish and sometimes beef. I would guess that as long as water will evaporate, meat can be dried. The time period will probably be a bit longer than in a dryer climate, but I believe you will still be able to process your food. Remember, the main objective of this product is to allow air to circulate around the food to be dried (allowing for more efficient drying) while protecting the food from insects. We hang our unit outside on the back porch in an area with moving air buy out of the wet, which seems to work.
Answer: I bought this long time ago- It's work good but it could not hand too heavy(more than 3 lbs) and I had to modify the frame to hand the weight better- Yes it is work .
Answer: probably not outside. it takes dry air movement and heat. I have mine inside and it works fine.
Q:
How does this dehydrator work and will it work in a 90% humidity climate?
Answer: WE live in an area that has widely varying humidity. When it is relatively dry, this dehydrator works very well. When it is humid, sometimes food gets mold growing on it. If it is usually quite humid, I'm not confident this is the best choice. Perhaps look into electric or solar dehydrators?
Answer: I live in Ohio, with high humidity in summer months. The dehydrator won't work if its raining of course, but in high humidity it still works well. I leave it hanging in the sun and it might take a few more days for the herbs, fruits, tomatoes, etc to dry, but they always do dry.
Answer: This dehydrator is a disaster. It is so flimsy in construction, time consuming to arrange the trays on little ribbons. No super engineer involved in this design for sure. Closing the sipper is such a problem (to do without uupsetting the trays you just spent a half hour arranging) and invariably bugs get in if even a little opening is there. I had trouble with dehydrating also. Finally, I just took the trays, covered them with black netting and dried on bricks on my picnic table set up so the bottom could air. In California, that worked. In Kansas (high humidity), it didn't.
Q:
Can this dehydrator be used to safely dehydrate meat to make jerky?
Answer: Yes, I made jerky many times with my two sets of trays. Of course, I lived in the desert and just hanging the racks in my garage dried the meat in two days or less. Anyway, careful washing in between times will ensure no residual problems.
Answer: I would think so. Just wash the trays. The net keeps the insects away. It will take a while unless you have really warm dry air someplace.
Answer: yes
Q:
What are the dimensions of the trays?
Answer: I measured it. They are 13" across with about 12" of latticed tray.
Answer: I'm sorry, I only have one left in stock and it is stored at one of Amazons warehouses. They store, sell, and ship all of my items. If I were to guess, and it is simply from my memory of the unit, I would say it is 16" square, + or minus 2". The item is quite good sized.
Answer: It measures 13x13
Answer: Approximately 15" by 15".
Answer: aprox 12x12 inch
Q:
Need another tray - are they available separately?
Q:
Can you make crackers from juicer pulp with this?
Answer: I did once- they tasted terrible so I never tried again
Q:
Would drying fruit this way attract fruit flies?
Answer: it may but the screen will soundly keep them off the food! However this dehydrator does (for us) does a terrible job drying anything but. leafy stuff, mint(s), chives, oregano, cilantro, catnip, it does great. but tomatoes, no way, peaches no way, strawberries, noway
Answer: My wife uses this device to dry meat. The mesh is fine, but some insets (gnats) could easily pass through this screen, so I would not recommend it for drying fruit personally. It is, however, advertised as a fruit drying tool. I don't believe fruit flies could penetrate the mesh, unless they were in close proximity when the flap door were open. It's probably safe enough; we used to dry our meats with a plastic kitchen strainer turned upside down over a bowl, so the was quite an improvement for us! Both methods work well for meats.
Q:
So why is this product being advertised for $47.99 but when you get to amazon, it's 59.99?
Q:
Where can I get an online manual for this item?
Answer: I don't think it need a manual. You just hang it and put your items in it. If you need help learning to dry things, you will need other books on that.
Answer: No, but it tells you what to do on a pamphlet inside.
Q:
How long can I expect it to take for fruit to dry (thinly sliced)?
Answer: Several days in dry warm/hot days
Q:
can I use this in my greenhouse?
Answer: im not sure about that, i think if the humitity is very high, u would need to watch your food closley, it really does need air, dry air, so it can dry. i would think it would be better to hang it out doors. thats where i hang mine!
Answer: Yes you can and in fact it would work better in there than out in the wind. We like ours but don’t expect it to be as fast as one you use electricity to operate.
Q:
does is come with the black tray that shows in the picture of someone putting it in?
Answer: Yes, the black trays are included. They come out for easy washing.
Answer: Ya - it comes with all the trays.
Answer: Yes, there are several trays, one for each level.
Q:
Hi , i live in the uk, can the dehydrate be shipped here please ? sue
Q:
What country is this product manufactured in?
Answer: I've had mine so long I can't remember and it's not on the product. Sorry. No doubt though that it's China. I like mine.
Answer: I saw an earlier review that said it was made by Living Whole Foods, Inc. Springville, Utah. It works reasonably well if used on an open covered area, but sometimes my wife leaves it out in the sun as well. Best results are obtained in a dry area with some sunlight, but the time is largely dependent on temperature and relative humidity.
Answer: Of course china made is sure.
Q:
Where is the food dehydrator that ai order on the 13th I’d December?Status of my order
Q:
I want to dry soaked nuts and seeds. i live near sacramento california. will it work?
Answer: Not Sure. I just dried a lot of peas fresh in from the garden and they were damp
Q:
Can this be used outside?
Answer: I've used mine outside but I hang it in the shade, and bring it in at night if the overnight humidity will be high or if dew is predicted for the morning. The mesh keeps the insects off.
Answer: I actually think it best outside since it would have sun and cross ventilation.
Q:
Does the manufacturer make fruit leather screens to fit this? If not, any suggestions for which brand of fruit leather screens work best with it?
Answer: I don't know if the manufacturer makes the fruit leather screens but you can always put wax paper on the shelves if you want something solid.
Answer: No idea I have only used for sliced vegetables and beans. Sorry I am no help!
Q:
How well does this keep dust out? Im in the desert and its dusty, will i have problems?
Answer: it does NOT keep the dust out, i have mine hanging in a sun room., and it even gets dusty in there. but i will say, it is well made and i love mine, so far a little dust hasn't killed me. LOL. I am even thinking of ordering another one.
Answer: Yes, you will get dust. The mesh screening will not block blowing dust outdoors. However, it depends on heat, not especially sunshine, so if it can hang in a garage or storage building or other uninsulated, but wind-protected place, then it will still dry your food if the air temperature is high enough.
Answer: I'm sure if it is a windy day that small particles could get through, but no problem if you use it on the days it isn't windy, I'm pretty sure. Besides, a little dirt never hurt anyone, lol. Kids eat is all the time. ;-)
Q:
How many days doe it take to dry meat?
Answer: It would all depend on the weather--dry, hot, etc.
Answer: It takes about 3 Hot Sun days
Q:
I wanted to buy one but it couldn't be delivred to France. Do you know how I could find it ?
Q:
Are the trays just supported on edges? Any danger of them falling down in a breeze?
Answer: The entire construction is light but sturdy. A breeze wouldn't budge these trays, as the stitching is quite secure on the inner straps. As long as the gust can't blow the dehydrator about, it's reliable. However, in a strong wind, your food items would, most likely, be whipped about inside before the trays are dislodged. This item can easily handle a standard breeze. I've used it several times and I've been delighted.
Q:
Im thinking of building a supply for emergencies. Once you dehydrate the food, how can you store it? And for how long?
Answer: you can put the food on mason jars or mylar bags with an oxagen obsorber. and u can also put in plastic bags, for not so long storage, u can also vacum seal, but if you use see through anything, keep in a dark area. sun light is not good for the food. you can also freeze, deep freeze, I do a lot of freeze drying . which is different from freezing and dehydrating. I like doing my food, in all these ways.
Answer: If you get it good and dry I would think indefinitely . I. Had great success with dried herbs last year and dried tomatoes but my peaches started growing hair. I was told they were not dry enough. I am still learning.
Product reviews of Food Dehydrator Hanging Food Pantrie Dehydration System Non Electric, Environmentally Friendly, Natural Way to Dry Foods. 5 tray Dehydrator
S. Kirk : DO NOT BUY THIS! IT IS JUNK!
This item will fall apart just by trying to put in the trays. It is impossible to get it back together as the straps have to be slid into plastic hooks. It fell partially apart just sitting on the table and picking it up a couple of times and got worse when trying to put it back together. Every time I got one strap back on, more were loose. Big waste of money but it's to late for me to send it back. If you do buy this I guarantee you will regret it.
V.Ward : Can be a little unwieldy to add and remove trays ...
Can be a little unwieldy to add and remove trays when they are full. Especially helpful for drying fruit on hot, dry summer days outside.
Forrest_Birch : Love! Works well
Love! Works well, I live the screen and that it breaks down for easy storage. I dry fruit mostly which can easily be done in 4 days (in the winter with wood heat) and I'm sure in the summer can dry faster. No energy required! What's not to love?
Philip Turner : It was useful for drying pea pods that had gone by for ...
It came with a section that broke immediately and the response from the seller was "Just staple it back together." That to me meant that a replacement would be made just as poorly.
I tried to use it for a few different things and most went moldy before they were dry. It was useful for drying pea pods that had gone by for seeds, and drying garlic seeds but that was all. For our climate in New Hampshire it was useless because we do not get enough sun for things to dry out in good time.
Unless you have a dry sunny climate I would not recommend this product.
Neo : Pantrie Dehydration System
I bought this to use during the winter months while my wood stove is providing a dry heat. While the heat source is far from free, I am still using it and might as well get the added benefit of dehydrating food specials during the winter months. This is not to say that I will not be using it during the summer months. The summers here are hot and dry and with the totally enclosed netting it will keep pesky birds and bugs away. I love the great construction and the ability to securely dehydrate food without the use of electricity. I have plans to purchase a second one in the near future.
amelia campbell : Great dehydrator
Contrary to some of the reviews, it seems very well built. We have used it several times and love it. The removable trays make it much easier to load and unload than other dryers. Our only difficulty is removing the dried food because it sticks to the trays. If the trays were treated with something that would make them non-stick, it would be a full 5 stars.
Kate : I rated this before but now increase my stars
What was reported about it falling apart is true. It does--the top hooks slide out and it's hard to get back together. BUT--the product is unique and worked fine for me once I reassembled it. It is good for herbs and light things but takes too long for thicker items like tomatoes. I had mine both inside and out. Outside went faster.
Kindle Customer. jan : but I'm sure happy I do have it
I hope I never need this dehydrator, but I'm sure happy I do have it. I have an orchard and the idea of losing fresh peaches and plums is really sad. At least with this dehydrator, I have a chance to dry extra fruit.
judi whalen : really now
I have read all the reviews. For the persons who wrote that this thing never fell apart...shame on you for not speaking the truth. The concept is great, but for the price it should have been better thought out for the tray attachment. Thank goodness for glue, as the designer suggested to use, as he was somewhat offended that he was getting bad reviews. For 60 bucks I felt that I shouldn't have had to reinforce this product to the extent it needed it. It fell apart just lifting or moving it's location, forbid a wind catch it.
I checked my glueing this morning and I am much happier with the stability. It will be easy to use for drying my herbs and lighter things. I would order another one if they discounted the price by about 30 percent.
Naseer S. : basic Fruit dryer
Excelent basic Fruit dryer in its price.

queen : Air Dried
No power!
It’s our third one these things rock and if you want to go production you need at least three.
sandi : Shelves fall out!
Overall I love the concept of outdoor dryers. I give this one a 5 for doing its job. And a 1 for design. It is VERY poorly designed as far as how the shelves are attached. There are funky cloth tabs that are difficult to open, they fold over themselves; once you get one side in, the other side comes out, repeating itself over and over again. Very frustrating. I finally resorted to safety pins until I can find a fix for next year. I wouldn't buy this particular brand of dryer again.
Rick C Aurand : Five Stars
looking forward to using it
Dee : Best solar drier
I now have two of these dryers. I have a small greenhouse that works perfect to hang these dryers. Large trays that wash up easily.
Nikki : Awesome so far...
This product is great! I've used it every day for the past week and no problems, and plan to use it all summer long (if anything new comes up I plan on editing this review). The only thing I have noticed is the zipper doesn't completely close at the bottom and some bugs got it there. But found a quick fix. I just tucked the little food pantrie tag in when I zipped it up and I haven't had a problem with little flies getting in. I hung it in the shade so its out of direct sun. The food is drying very quickly in the desert air.
Glory Doe : Available under $10 at Japanese houseware store, sold as sweater dryer.
The thing works fine in the sun or indoors over a heat vent. But this is a rip off!
Mark Jackson : Five Stars
Excellent product dries tomatoes in two days.
woodswolfspeaker : Excellent Purchase
Excellent transaction. Easy to purchase, and quick delivery. Item arrived intact. I really will be using this item all summer long. Fantastic price. Go Amazon.
jan d. : the first and best!
I've had four of these for about 15 years. originally purchased from Lehmans - they no longer have them. The price is about the same as when I purchased. I have used them every summer and they are still great. Also purchased the nonstick sheets for thick liquids to make fruit leather. Excellent product
FarmerJen : BEST Solar Food Dryer ever - just bought 2nd!!
I've owned my Food PANtrie non-electric hanging dryer for 3 years & use it every summer. I love it! Just purchased 2nd dryer for a friend. I dry herbs & make sun-dried tomatoes. The mesh keeps insects away - other solar dryers let the bugs right in. You will need a place to hang this - I hang in part shade from tree branch. Could take 1-3 days to dry depending on food item/sun/wind so you'll also need place to hang inside at night - I hang from bicycle hook in garage. Trays are removable for cleaning - ask a friend hold mesh open when you add/remove trays. Self-contained for easy dust-free storage in winter. I've never had trouble with straps as another reviewed mentioned. (maybe they put it together wrong?) This is THE BEST solar dryer I've ever owned!

Ajali Shabazz : I'm delighted with this non-electric dehydrator
First, Thank You to all those who reviewed this product that I'd never seen nor used, before. One worries that the manufacturer might be posting overly positive feedback to lure suckers into purchasing shoddy goods. However, the positive reviews on this item are 100% accurate. I'm delighted with this non-electric dehydrator, especially after using my electric doubled my electricity bill! I like kale chips but not if they cost me an extra $200 a month! The PANtrie is portable, light, with plenty of well sized trays to dry out lots of food. It's a hands down Great Product at an excellent price, you pay once, not every month you get your electricity bill. Kale chips here I come!
Adding this paragraph a bit later and I've confirmed my excitement in using the dehydrator to great success! I used the pulp from juicing and finally I don't have to throw those still nutritious scraps away. They made a delicious soup, I gotta add! Today, I'll be preparing a tasty nutritional yeast dipping for my kale chips, as it'll be a bank of warm, low humidity weather. Thank You to the manufacturers. Truly an excellent product!
Amazon Customer : Great free easy but need stronger materials mostly Zip and straps !!!
I own 6 food dryer and unfortunately the zip broke after few months and the strap support the tray also break after years and need be replaced , the sun light and winds damage the materials after years and need to be fix it by "tailor , i love anyways it's work great and free !
