is the mesh small enough to catch fresh water minnows?

Answer: For small fresh water minnows you'd probably be better off with 1/4" mesh. 3/8 works well for shrimp and mud minnows. Hope this helps.

You did not specify size of mesh is it 3/8 or 1/2 or 1".

Answer: It's not in front of me for me to measure (it's on my boat) but it's either 3/8" or 1/2". I use it for anchovies, they're fairly small and slender, and they don't pass through it, some do get gill stuck in it so I'd guess 3/8".

Answer: Personal opinion. No. Too light weight. Having a hard time with the local anchovies in the harbor. Again just a personal opinion. Others may think different. Was raised in Hawaii and been cast netting most of my life with nets that weigh 18 lbs to 22 lbs. sad to say I have yet to catch any bait

Answer: Cannot give exact weight but the net is not that heavy. More than once have mullets gotten away because the net did not sink fast enough

Answer: i dont know regarding Betts Old Salt but to compare with Mako Bait Cast Net 3/8" Square Mesh, 6 Ft. CBT-S6 (6 ft. Radius) the last one is better

can you catch foot long mullet or bigger with this net?

Answer: Yes you can catch larger mullet with this net, but if you throw over a large school of them they will hold the net on top of the water just because of the amount of fish I'm the net. Once you close the net on them you will be ok.

Answer: I believe 1 pound per foot is the correct weight. Chain weight is best.

Answer: Yes radius. I found it to be a bit light for waters in a harbor for sardine. Not heavy enough and drops slow. But on beach setting. It's fine in shallower waters. I hope this helps.

Doesn't seem to be heavy enough at the bottom with the weights. The weights are plastic and with it being 7 feet make it difficult to get the net fully open before it hits the water.

I have bought about 17 cast nets since 2002. My son is a fishing maniac. And he can be rough on cast nets. Hung up, ripped, forgotten, etc. He has done it. This net arrived on my front door really fast. And so far it's been several months and it's still hanging strong. He uses it after school during the week and on the weekends if it's not storming. He loves it.

Good cast net for the price, I'm happy. Reasons for this bet not getting five stars:
- Net is coming loose at the horn, moderate usage over 5 months.
- Net seems coarse and even after a nice warm bath in fabric softener. Also is really fluffy.
- Leash is way too short for me, I don't know about yall but I often times see bait and throw my net beyond its leash. Everybody know what happens then, your net closes or begins to close before it hits the water. This means lost bait.

very difficult for a beginner otherwise good quality ....I can throw but this keeps getting hung up and half opens, tried many different methods ....wore out my arm and pissed me off in 95 degree heat!!

I needed bait and struggled to get some thanks to this net .....again good quality and if you are an expert then have at it ...

but if you just need small bait and are a newbie ....get the easy throw 6fter ... way easier on your arm, shoulder etc... opens every time ...

Works OK for this price range. The area I use it for in the lakes in Texas has a lot of brush and stumps. I go through about 2 nets a year. No need to waist money on the very high priced nets. I use to but these work just a well and fraction of the cost.

I ordered this the end of January. It took 9 days to ship. I received it two days after the date Amazon said would be the latest I would get it. I did get an email notice that my shipment was delayed but I was never told why. I took this net to the beach and casted it twice before the lead line started to unravel and my weights started to fall off. The weights seemed pretty cheap. They felt kind of like a plastic material. I sent it back to Amazon because I expect a cast net to be durable. Not start to fall apart after a few casts. The airway bill was automatically generated by Amazon for UPS to ship on their account so I did not have to pay shipping, but UPS charged me around $7 for packing materials. So please be advised the risk you take with this net. It wasn't anything that I couldn't have fixed and been able to work with down the road. I just want a net that has some sort of life to it and can hang on its own for a while before I need to start doing repairs. Excellent price though but you do get what you pay for!
