Blue's Multispecies Challenge 2024

I decided to enter an spring/summer long multispecies kayak fishing challenge put on by a local kayak tournament club. It's a 50/50 payout for the angler with the most species, and the angler with the longest overall stringer and we must stay within a 300 mile radius of KC. I wanted to get a head start on it this week to try to catch a trout because they'll all be dying as soon as the water starts warming up. I'll try to keep my totals updated on here and post pictures each time I catch an upgrade or new species. Only got 3 different species on the board Monday in the miserable cold, wind, and drizzle, but at least I did get my trout.

I have a feeling you will be upgrading all of those. Definitely the drum, definitely the bass, and if you run across one of those mondo trout you usually find I'd say that would be all three! Eager to follow this, sounds super interesting! A lot of bass guys will struggle with it.

I'm doing to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone and experience some new things as well. It's so easy to hook up to the boat and fish anywhere on most lakes, but now I have to plan and come up with a strategy for what part of a lake and what time of year I'm going to be able to connect with some species that aren't always near shore or within reach of a kayak angler. I'm sure I'll upgrade the drum and largemouth, trout I might not but I'll be trying. Going to use my love for "trash" fish to my advantage when it gets hot out. All those big longnose gar, buffalo, carp, suckers, and shovelnose sturgeon in the river would really help me out. I'll be going for the "death by a thousand cuts", too. Getting all the sunfish species, creek chubs, bullheads, crappie, and white bass that aren't overly large even at their biggest, but all combined will add up quite a bit. I wish the closest lake with pike in it wasn't over 3 hours away or I'd try to make that happen too.

Good for you blue. You can stumble of a lot of different species with Ned. I fished it solid for 2 weeks last spring on Stockton. It put 9 species of fish in the boat including the regular 3 black bass species.

It accounted for all 3 fish in the pictures as well

Most species will definitely be the way to go. a 3" upgrade does a lot less damage than a 13" fish!

Got 2 new species added to the list this weekend, a white bass and a spotted bass.

Love these type of challenges.
I had 13 total species caught locally last year for mine. If I went micro fishing I could have easily doubled my total.

Is snagging allowed? A spoonbill (paddlefish) would add a whole lot of inches fast!

Unfortunately not because one of 2 places where it is allowed in the state is 10 minutes from my house. The same place is also loaded with big longnose gar that will contribute later this year.

Hadn't even taken the kayak out since my last entry here until yesterday. Decided to try to cross a difficult one off the list after I heard about a hot walleye bite going on at a small city lake I'd never been to about an hour away. I had spoons, grubs, power minnows, cranks, and some crawlers rigs and a marginal amount of confidence. A 180 acre lake isn't big, but in a kayak with no electronics, it's not small either. I eyeballed the lake when I got there and decided I'd troll a shad rap across the dam and fish a rock/clay/sand looking bank and point on the other side that looked like stuff I'd caught walleye on before. I hadn't paddled far when my rod bucked hard in the rod holder but nothing connected. It happened so fast I was sure my bait hit bottom or a brush pile. I paddled on when it slammed back again and stayed loaded this time. Just a little guy, but man I was pumped to get a toothy fish! There just isn't many in Kansas and reaching them from a kayak any time other than spring is really difficult.
2 bites in 50 yards, so I kept paddling. Got to the end of the dam where it flattened out and my rod was bouncing as the bait was hitting rods, then it folded in half and started jerking wildly into the water, obviously a much larger fish. I tried to tell myself it was a huge walleye, but when it wouldn't move off the bottom and it started steadily dragging my kayak along with it, it became obvious that wasn't the case. I was fearing it was a huge drum, but got the pleasant surprise when I saw this beast rise up from the depths in the clear water with my bait wedged in the corner of it's mouth. Another species on the list, and almost 2.5' more length!
Good thing it wasn't any bigger, I about ran out of board.
After that excitement I started drifting my crawler and snapping a firetiger 1oz spoon. Quickly discovered the lake was pretty shallow and with the water being so clear, I dropped down to a 1/2oz lavender shad spoon, bingo, first cast.
Had a lot of fun catching close to 2 dozen eyes, walleyes and saugeyes, to get 2 more species on the board. My biggest walleye wasn't much, but my biggest saugeye was a dandy.

I also caught a wiper that was around the 20" mark, which I don't have one on my totals yet, right as I tried to take the picture to count it, the thing flopped and was right back in the water, hopefully doesn't come back to haunt me.
I also made a quick stop on the way home to add another species. Wasn't as big a smallie as I hoped, but got another foot out of the deal.

The current standings from those that have made entries as of the end of May. A lot more people entered, so I'm not sure if they haven't been fishing, or maybe they enter all their fish at once. Their total is a bit off from mine, not sure what happened there except for the smallmouth I guess didn't have it's mouth closed all the way so I lost an inch there, but that still leaves 5" unaccounted for.
I added 4 more species and around 4' total length this weekend also.
9.5" White Crappie

8.5" redear sunfish
27" channel catfish

I lost what would have been my 8th species of the year at the Yak this weekend. It was the biggest Redbreast Sunfish I every seen as well. It was big enough to take a 4" wacky rigged Senko. What a heartbreaker.

That stinks. I've never caught one, no Redbreast Sunfish around here. Longear Sunfish are the closest we have, very brilliantly colored little fish, especially males during the spawning season.

Boy do I wish I'd caught my monster longnose gar from my kayak last week! I didn't add near what that fish would have yesterday, but I did get a little over 2.5 more feet to my total with 2 new species and an upgrade.

That’s a really cool idea for a tournament. You have some crazy bright sunfish out your way, out here they all seem really muted.

Got a slight upgrade on my smallmouth.
I still have more work to and kind of disappointed with how I've done so far, but it ends the end of the month and I have a knockout punch planned still, but I'm still doing pretty good. My channel cat got DQ'd because my yak wasn't in the picture, which was 27" so that hurt, but I'll get another one.

Well, my knockout punch was supposed to be a big longnose gar, but this might have to work. Cut the tail off a bit in the this picture but my picture I submitted it was all there, all 39 inches of her.
I was beached doing pictures and measurements, figured I'd set my bait back in the current seam this one bit it, rod hadn't been out 2 minutes when line was peeling out again! The "small" one was 8 pounds.
I was also hoping to find a wiper in the fast water. I didn't find any where I'd hoped and was disappointed because I know from a friend that they live there. On the way back, there's a water treatment plant that has some water running into the river. I had 10 minutes and a grub tied on so why not? First cast white bass, second cast, maybe the smallest river wiper I've ever caught, but he's 10 3/4 more inches and another species on my list.
