Product reviews of Z GRILLS 2021 7002 Series Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker (XYZG-7002C2E)
Bob : A frustrating start...
I had high hopes for this, but it has started out as a letdown.
It came with a bent up grate, for which I contacted Z Grills and they told me they are on back order but I'm on a list to have one sent to me. That's okay, shipping damage can't always be helped and the grill will still function with a bent grill while I await the arrival of the new one.
I went to do the initial startup a few days later to try it out before the weekend and it wouldn't power on. I did all the troubleshooting they had listed (checked my outlets, checked the internal fuse), no luck. I then decided to take the auger unit apart because that's where all the wires are located (it comes pre-assembled). Come to find out they failed to connect one set of wires. I was able to have my wife squeeze her hand in there and connect them (not a lot of room to work) which did the trick. Powers on and runs.
I'll update again when I cook for the first time this weekend but so far it's been a bit frustrating...
oliver : Easy to put together and food tasted great!!
Easy to install, built well. They had the instructions laid out well. Food tasted amazing!!!
Diabolic : Smokes meat to juicy goodness.
I have no idea why I've waited this long for a pellet smoker. The assembly wasn't the easiest but it comes with decent instructions and tools. The operation is simple you set the temp to what ever you want and it holds it wonderfully. It smokes/cooks the meat evenly. It comes with a grease bucket, 2 meat temp probs and cover. The screen and operation are easy and straight forward power on and set temp. It show the temps for what it's set to, actual temperature, and the internal meat temperature for the two probes. I did have one issue which wasn't a huge deal one of the wires had come undone to the control unit and wouldn't turn on at first. I ended up having to remove the panel underneath by the cord and reach up inside to plug it back in.
Hairy Potter : Fantastic Grill Overall, But Has A Few Flaws
Overall, I am very pleased with this pellet grill. I had some hiccups along the way, but nothing major enough that would prevent me from recommending this grill to a friend. While there are some design modifications that need to be made, the grill produces amazing food and I am happy with it!
I will list off the pros and cons and then further elaborate on noteworthy items.
Pros:
Food tastes GREAT!
Large enough to cook for a 15 person party
Two built in meat probes
Digital display for reading meat probes, setting grill temp, and reading current grill temp
Built in grease drip catch (poor design...read more later on)
Fits entire 20lb bag of smoke pellets
Cons:
My unit arrived with a factory defect (I doubt this is common)
Pain in the neck to build (comes fully deconstructed in a box...great packaging though!)
Set temperature only allows for their presets
Unit does not have a built in cabinet/storage space
Unit has some sharp sheet metal edges
Built in probes can’t be preset to beep at a certain time
Pellets remaining window is AWFUL!
I want to first start by saying that my list of cons might be larger than the pros, but the pros are far more important. A lot of the cons I listed are me being picky and might not be standard. I want to reiterate that this pellet grill is amazing.
When I received the unit, it was fully deconstructed in a box. I figured it would be easy to assemble. The instructions were very easy to understand and follow, but physical construction was a hassle. I find myself to be a handy individual and it took me over 2 hours to assemble this by myself. Indeed the instructions recommend not to assemble the unit by yourself, but if you need to, it is possible. It is quite annoying, but it is possible. The process would not be made much quicker with a helper, but it would be easier. I noticed there were quite a few sharp sheet metal edges while I was assembling the unit. Once I completed building the unit I noticed there was a pair of included gloves to wear while building it, but the instructions never mentioned them. As well, once the unit is assembled, the sharp edges are hidden and not easy to access, but I am concerned that one day I will find a sharp edge while touching hidden spots of the grill when moving it long distances (moving it when I’m not using the handle and wheels).
The unit has wheels on both sides. One set of wheels is a large “off road” style constructed with hard plastic. These wheels are capable of going up or down large lips. The grill would be able to easily be pulled up a 2 inch lip. The other set is a pair of 360 degree castors. Combined they offer decent maneuverability, but moving the grill into a tight space can definitely be annoying. Because I don't have any large lips to pull my grill up, I don't need the large wheels and would prefer two sets of 360 degree castors, but I understand and respect the design decision.
Once my unit was fully constructed I plugged it in and it wouldn't turn on. After about 30 minutes, I noticed (got EXTREMELY lucky that even I saw it) that there was a wire bundle that was not connected. This was a FACTORY DEFECT. The electronics are entirely encased in the grill and the electronics are not intended for the user to touch. From the factory, the wire connector which delivers power was completely disconnected. I am a handy individual, so I disassembled the electronics housing box and reassembled it. This was an extremely complex task and no one else should have to do this. I believe if almost anyone else had this defect, they would have been unable to resolve the issue and would have had to return the unit. From the time I originally had the unit fully built, it took me 1.5 hours to diagnose, repair, and reinstall/build the unit. From there it was clear skies; everything worked as it should!
I had a party of 15 people and I was able to fit a large pork shoulder, a very large chicken, 2 racks of ribs, and 2 kielbasa on this grill at the same time. The fitment was tight, but it all fit. When I did that the entire top shelf was unused, so I could have had food up there as well. In most scenarios there will be no need to fit that much on the grill. One negative to putting large quantities of food on the grill is that there is only one meat probe grommet. I had 4 meat probes through the grommet and that was about all that I could fit. If I ever need to fit more probes in the grill I will need to remove the grommet, leaving a half inch hole in the side of the grill, this way they fit. That also poses a problem if you are using an external probe thermometer device and the meat probes need to enter from the other side of the grill. The only other problem I found while grilling this much food is that there was not enough “counter space”. There is only one small section to set utensils on. I needed to have multiple utensils, trays, etc. and I had to utilize my other grill space to fit it all. If you don't have other outdoor counter space, that is going to be a very annoying problem to deal with.
The digital display is great. It tells you the internal temperature of the grill. The temperature set dial is great and easy to use. The problem with these is that they operate on 5 degree increments. For most use, you aren't going to set the grill to an odd temperature, but because the dial only allows presets, there are only a few temperatures you can choose from. It starts at 180 and it goes up in 25 degree increments up to high which is 400 degrees. This should be fine in most cases, but with a dial it should be possible to spin the dial and go up by 5 degrees every time until you reach the desired temperature. The built in meat probes do NOT operate on the same idea. The meat probes will give you temperatures accurate to 1 degree (accuracy is obviously depending on placement of the meat).
The grill has a pellet hopper window to show how many pellets are remaining until empty. The window design MUST be reworked. I started a 12 hour smoke at midnight and my grill auto shut off and read error code “LEr.” I noticed this after 5 hours because I went to sleep. After another 2 hours I noticed it did it again. After looking up the error code I found out that it means “Low Error Reading.” The temperature was below 125 degrees for too long. That means I had no pellet fuel left. I looked in the window and the pellets were stacked ABOVE the window meaning I had maximum pellets remaining. I lifted the lid and the hopper was empty! It turns out there is a window sill on the inside of the pellet hopper and the pellets stacked like Tetris on the window sill! It appeared as though the hopper was totally full when indeed it was entirely empty! This design must be fixed.
Overall I am very happy with this grill, but due to the large list of minor issues (and the factory defect), I cannot issue this grill a 5 star rating. I love the grill and I am in no way displeased, but there are some annoying things that I would change! Overall a great product!
