Product reviews of Z GRILLS 2021 7002 Series Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker (XYZG-7002C2E)
KAS : Durable Materials, Great Temp Control, Lot of Parts for Assembly
Overall we are really impressed with this smoker. Assembly probably took about an hour, but the directions are pretty easy to follow. They supply all the tools you need, but if you have an electric drill to drive the screws and a ratchet set of your own, it'll go faster. That being said, there are a ton of parts and quite a few steps-- if you don't like IKEA furniture, you won't like this part.
The materials used seemed pretty hefty and well made. Everything fit together nicely and I only had one big, shallow dent along the main opening to the smoker from shipping, but I was able to get it bent back into shape in just a few minutes.
For operation, this has three probes. The main probe in the chamber is the only one that it uses to control the temperature and the other two probes are to stick in your meat and are for informational purposes only. All three temperatures display on the screen at the same time-- so, if you line this up right with your door or window, you can check on your smoker and meat without ever stepping outside. The temperature knob has coarse adjustments-- it clicks for set points at Off/Smoke/180/225/250/275/300/325, then I think 350 and HIGH (which runs it up to about 500F). So, if you're OCD and like to adjust your smoker temperature to 217.3F, you can't do that with this one. In fact, while the display for the two meat probes goes to single degrees (like 182F), the main chamber display is in increments of 5 (220, 225, 230, etc.) As far as temp control goes, there seemed to be about a 10-15F degree fluctuation for the first 20-30 minutes, then it locked in to within 5F. We had it set at 225F and it displayed 230F for most of the 12 hours, though it did drop to about 220F when it started raining on the smoker.
The smoker itself has a hopper that holds 20lbs of pellets with some room to spare, so it'll probably hold about 25 pounds. For a 12 hour smoke at 225F, we went through probably about a third of the hopper (so ~7 pounds).
Sorry I don't have pictures of the brisket in the smoker, it was a big brisket and it fit no problem. The trays are porcelain coated (so hopefully they hold up for a long time, though I need to figure out what is safe to use for cleaning them) and the drip tray below it is a decently thick stainless steel train that funnels the grease to a bucket outside the smoker. Below the drip tray is a heat disperser (to even out the heat from the pellets), and again that is made from some pretty think stainless steel plate. Overall, we're impressed with how well this ran and the construction. When assembling, even things like the wheels were heavy and you could tell they were sold and not some cheap plastic molded parts.
This is a very nice pellet smoker and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Bob : A frustrating start...
I had high hopes for this, but it has started out as a letdown.
It came with a bent up grate, for which I contacted Z Grills and they told me they are on back order but I'm on a list to have one sent to me. That's okay, shipping damage can't always be helped and the grill will still function with a bent grill while I await the arrival of the new one.
I went to do the initial startup a few days later to try it out before the weekend and it wouldn't power on. I did all the troubleshooting they had listed (checked my outlets, checked the internal fuse), no luck. I then decided to take the auger unit apart because that's where all the wires are located (it comes pre-assembled). Come to find out they failed to connect one set of wires. I was able to have my wife squeeze her hand in there and connect them (not a lot of room to work) which did the trick. Powers on and runs.
I'll update again when I cook for the first time this weekend but so far it's been a bit frustrating...
