Lemon : Be Prepared for Major Assembly

This is heavy duty grill that when delivered weighed A LOT, so be warned if you have lots of steps to your place. The grill was well packaged and arrived intact and undamaged. But be prepared for a fair amount of set-up and assembly time and have a helper if you can; this is not an out-of-the-box product. You should also be prepared to have access to an electrical outlet for this grill. I would rank the fit and finish of the grill "good", but not great. Some sharp edges, the electrical work is not well thought out to be consumer friendly.

Once up and running it is a great grill with lots of grill space. We’re looking forward to a summer of trying our hand at some smoker recipes.

This Z Grills 2021 7002 Series Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker (XYZG-7002F2) is an impressive piece of BBQ engineering, this is like Traeger and their wood pellet grills/smokers. I haven't owned a wood pellet grill myself, but I have had a few friends pick them up and then became cult like missionaries with their persistent attempts to convert anyone who would listen.

My first impressions of this Z Grills Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker are that you need to be a damn Tetris Grand Champion to unpack everything included from the body of the grill/smoker itself. You will also likely need assistance or something to move this box to where you intend to set it up. Set up is quite honestly incredibly involved and in all honestly, annoying. After you have assembled the grill, you will need to "season" it, the instructions walk you through it and it isn't difficult, but it is especially important so be sure to do it.

My personal favorite part of this grill is the hopper that holds 20lbs of wood pellets and pushes them into the fire when needed. The best part is that unlike wood chips in a traditional smoker, wood pellets provide all the good parts without most of the bad ones, specifically clean-up is amazingly simple since there will only be a thin layer of white ash when you get done. I found the best way to deal with this is with a shop vac and it takes a couple minutes.

Now my criticism of this entire Wood Pellet "Grill" and Smoker movement is that if you are a traditional BBQer it will take a readjustment period to get used to the way of doing things here, it's not bad, but it is a bit of a change. The process of getting started is remarkably similar to an oven, you set a desired temperature, and after 15-20 minutes or so you come back, and things are ready to go. This also raises an interesting dilemma: How does one sear a ribeye on this thing? Well, the answer is going to disappoint most traditional grillers, because searing is possible, but doesn't provide consistent enough results for me.

There are some methods out there and some other products that promise the best of both worlds, but from the factory this isn't going to blow you away with the suboptimal searing ability. But for me, I prefer doing a reverse sear with my trusty cast iron skillet, so this isn't a huge deal for me. Some of my favorite things to cook on this grill are chicken, ribs, and tri-tip. I really like to mix up the "flavors" of wood pellets I use to really elevate things, some kinds are better with certain types of meat, and some work well when mixed. There is a lot of experimentation and possibilities, but I really enjoy that aspect of it.

Overall, I came away from this feeling good about what this grill offers, which is different enough to feel different, but also still retaining enough similarity to the grilling we've been doing all our lives. This is a well-made product, and I appreciated all the included goodies and accessories from the manufacturer, they went above and beyond. 5/5 stars.

Bob : A frustrating start...

I had high hopes for this, but it has started out as a letdown.

It came with a bent up grate, for which I contacted Z Grills and they told me they are on back order but I'm on a list to have one sent to me. That's okay, shipping damage can't always be helped and the grill will still function with a bent grill while I await the arrival of the new one.

I went to do the initial startup a few days later to try it out before the weekend and it wouldn't power on. I did all the troubleshooting they had listed (checked my outlets, checked the internal fuse), no luck. I then decided to take the auger unit apart because that's where all the wires are located (it comes pre-assembled). Come to find out they failed to connect one set of wires. I was able to have my wife squeeze her hand in there and connect them (not a lot of room to work) which did the trick. Powers on and runs.

I'll update again when I cook for the first time this weekend but so far it's been a bit frustrating...

Juanita : Great pellet grill!

I really wanted to give this 5 stars but after it was assembled it didn’t work! I called and called the customer service and left messages, but no response. I finally emailed them and heard back within a couple days. They gave me a fix and it worked. What it was was that it wasn’t turning on and we had to unassemble the electric box and connect the wires, how they weren’t connected was beyond me! It truly takes two people to add and a better part of the day! The instruction book could use some clarification. So now that it working I have smoked steaks and burgers and let me tell you this is a game changer! The pellet hopper is a 20 lb hopper and it is easy to remove the grates and clean it up. This has a PID and let’s you know the temperature, so far has been pretty accurate. It comes with a cover which is very nice! This pellet grill is going to get a lots of use this summer!
