It has been my experience with crawdads as bait to avoid the big buggahs due to their imposing claws; if you are lucky & find a a recently molted specimen, then you have an ideal big bait.These BaikalBass silicone baits have exaggerated claws - nit exactly a tasty target. Even bass have their limits.

These soft jelly-like crawdads are attractive. I figure, just like us, fish go after bait they find irresistible. These 5 various-colored lifelike crawfish look good enough to eat! I cast and let one sink to the bottom, gradually bringing retrieving it (it swims backwards, since the real McCoy moves that way), and then let it descend to the bottom again.
They come with weighted hooks on a screw wire that twists into the tail. This has the eyelet your line ties to. You slide the big hook through the body near the head.
I’ve had excellent results with these for large- and small-mouth bass in the clear waters of Arizona. Tip: I add a drop or two of anchovy or salmon oil to the back, just before dropping it in.
