Questions about Weston Dehydrator Netting Sheets, 13.9 by 10.6-Inch, Black
Q:
First set I ordered in March were brown and great quality - sets I just ordered are black and horrible quality - why the difference?
Answer: I don't know. The ones I ordered were black but they seemed ok to me, exactly what I was expecting. I haven't had the occasion to use them yet.
Q:
Are these rigid enough that if i were to cut them to a mason jar size, would they hold down fermenting cabbage if a weight was set on it?
Answer: not sure if i understand your question. The netting is not heavy and is flexible. the purpose is to provide smaller holes on the dehydrating rack so that smaller foods would not fall through. I can't see it holding down cabbage in a fermenting pot or jar unless something else was on top of it. Sorry
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes — but you don’t even need a weight. Cut them to the internal diameter of the jar, then bend them to get them through the opening and they hold the cabbage down fine — they are stiff enough that the cabbage can’t force them up past the neck of the jar. But you will still need to add brine every other day or so for the first couple of weeks to keep the brine level above the cabbage.
Answer: They are very flexible and flimsy. They work very well for the job they were intended for. Any liquid would seep thru the mesh. The mesh would have to be the same size of the weight, but liquid would still seep through.
Answer: I would expect that it might work. They are fairly rigid.
Answer: Yes they are fairly ridged, I believe that would work.
Q:
are these fully metal? Is there a coating?
Answer: They are not metal at all. They are nylon or plastic.
Answer: They are plastic. I used them on top of the shelves that came with my dehydrator because the holes on mine were too large for many foods. Food did not stick, wash up easily, and you can cut them to size.
Answer: These are plastic. I would prefer stainless steel mesh but have not been able to find anyone that sells them. The plastic ones are probably better than using plastic wrap because thy are pretty thick plastic.
Q:
Did anyone try to use it as drainage mesh? Drainage mesh is used at the bottom of plant pots to prevent soil from getting out through drainage holes.
Answer: I did not use as a drainage mess...i think it would work!
Answer: Have not used it for that, but you can cut it any size, so it should work.
Answer: No. I just use it in my dehydrator for drying fruits, etc. But it's a tough material, so I can't see why it wouldn't work for your needs! Go to it pal!
Q:
Does anyone actually know what material these are made of?
Answer: That was one of my main concerns also; only thing I could find out is it is food-grade plastic. They worked well for laying large quantities of sliced food out on a shelf in my greenhouse. It was very quick - took only 1 to 1-1/2 days to dehydrate beets, carrots, onions, etc. in moderately warm weather. A long roll might be more convenient, but these were much more economical and worked fine.
Answer: The Weston site says polypropylene and BPA free.
Answer: I think it is food grade plastic.
Q:
What is highest temp they can be used?
Answer: I am very sorry I do not know. I have a large homemade dryer with approximately 6 shelves that works with two very large bulbs in the bottom of the dryer.
Q:
How flexible are these? I need some mesh that is very flexible. it needs to be able to bend at right angles.
Answer: The mesh is pretty flexible. You can bend it at right angles, but - there will be some curvature at the bend, and it will flatten back out upon release.
Answer: They are very flexible. Easily roll up to a small roll. If you need to have a sharp 90 degree crease, you could probably get it to that with some extra pressure or a bit of heat.
Answer: Yes the are very flexible and you can trim them to fix right.
Answer: This mesh is very flexible
Q:
What kind of plastic are these made of? are they bpa-free?
Q:
Would the mesh be small enough to put sunflower seeds on without them falling through?
Answer: Yes, It is a very fine mesh.
Answer: Yes, easily, judging from the ones I received.
Q:
Could this be used in a toaster over at low temps like 95F?
Answer: I would think so. I have used them in my dehydrator at 140 degrees. They are made for dehydrators and will easily take 160 degrees. As long as they are not resting on the heating element should be fine. They are also easily trimmed to fit.
Answer: They can stand up to temps of 160 in the dehydrator but I don't know about the small space in a toaster oven and the element being so close. Sorry not more helpful. ????????
Answer: Never tried that, but my guess is it would be fine, as long as it doesn't touch the heating element. My greenhouse is 110 degrees and hotter when I'm using it to dry foods in the summer, so the heat doesn't hurt it, but again, I wouldn't want it up against a heating element in an oven.
Answer: Don't know, might melt because the heat element could be too close and there is no airflow. Temp in the dehydrator would be warmer but air is always moving. I would not do it.
Answer: These are for dehydrator use, and most dehydrators go up to 135F at least.
Q:
From what material are these made?
Answer: not sure....seems to be some kind of plastic or poly product...you may want to check with the manufacturer. We have used them in the dehydrator and they work fine for the elderberries we have been drying.
Answer: Appears to be a heat resistant nylon, is made to stand temperatures inside this drying oven. Confirm with Weston Products,t heir customer service is pretty good. These are easy to wash in dishwwasher top rack
Answer: I dont know. Probably a strong nylon mesh
Answer: Plastic
Answer: Mesh plastic.
Q:
Are these washable or disposable?
Answer: Washable. I just put mine in a sink of water and rinse off later or they may only need light rinsing depending on what you dried on it.
Answer: They are washable....I hand wash mine.
Answer: They are washable. I have used them a number of times already, and no problems so far.
Answer: I have washed mine
Q:
How big are the holes in the sheet?
Answer: The screen mesh holes are about 1/8" sq, a bit larger than a normal window screen. About what you would want when drying food (that is why I bought them).
Answer: the holes are no more than an eighth of an inch at the widest part
Answer: They are quite small. I dehydrated celery and they shrink a lot. Nothing falls through.
Answer: Its a very small mesh. I use them for drying chopped onions and herbs.
Q:
I want to dehydrate sprouted wheat. Is the mesh small enough to keep the sprouted wheat berries from falling through?
Answer: Never tried sprouted wheat, but I think it is small enough- it takes a real tiny crumb of something to go through the screen on mine.
Answer: Yes, I think so.
Q:
are these dishwasher safe?
Answer: Yes, they do real well in the dishwasher. I've had mine for a year now, no problems.
Q:
Are these shipped flat or rolled up? I have a similar mesh which was rolled up and it was a pain to get to flatten out...
Answer: Mine were shipped flat. No issues with them rolling.
Answer: Rolled up. Really not a problem to get them flat except for a little on the ends. For me this helps to keep things from sliding off.
Answer: We ship these flat.
Answer: They are shipped flat. Great product. Easy to trim.
Answer: They are flat. and a whole lot easier to deal with.
Answer: Mine were here flat did not have any problems at all they came in excellent shape
Answer: Mine were rolled and I put them under some heavy books for a couple of weeks. It helped.
Answer: Flat
Q:
Can these also be used in the oven? If so what temperature ranges?
Answer: If they are kept far away from the element. Great for dehydraters and low indirect heat. A friend tried them in his smoker and they melted and caught fire.
Product reviews of Weston Dehydrator Netting Sheets, 13.9 by 10.6-Inch, Black
JMG : Five Stars
Perfect for what I wish to use them for all the small items
chel : CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THESE
WORK GREAT. EASILY TRIMS TO DESIRED SIZES IF NEEDED.
Mrs. Robin : I am so happy I ordered these mesh dehydrator sheets
I am so happy I ordered these mesh dehydrator sheets. Our dehydrator manufacturer doesn't sell separate drying sheets specifically for the model we bought. So when I saw these, I had to give them a go. They are somewhat pliable and were very easy to cut down so they can perfectly fit our dehydrator trays. Now I can use all six of my trays to dehydrate smaller pieces of vegetables on instead of only one. Great product!
amazonreview : Money well spent.
Good value! Works well for drying sliced fruits/vegetable. Can trim is too large for your tray. Durable and washable.
E. Barth : Best by yet.
so helpful. Takes so much time off drying..
Jonathan Alexander : Great mesh that can esily be cut
This mesh is very useful for things beyond drying. I use these for my fermentation crocks to keep all of the food submerged beneath the stones. I cut them with scissors to fit the inner diameter of the crocks. The fact that you get 10 in a pack, it is tough to beat this kind of value.

Made them work
Jotaluke : I paid full price - This is exactly what I needed so small items wouldn't fall through in my dehydrator.
This is exactly what I was looking for. The quality and size of the netting allows for me to dry small seeds such as shelled pumpkin seeds without them falling through. It was easy to cut to size as well.
I paid full price - I will comment that I will NOT buy from a seller who's reviews are heavily saturated with 'free or discounted' reviews no matter how good the deal or high the rating. I don't care how 'honest' they may sound, the slanted bias is undeniably there. My apologies if I offend anyone, but this is my humble opinion and how I choose to buy from Amazon.

I read some reviews that complained about curling. I didn't find that to be so. They wash up great and the food doesn't stick to them. Great value too.
