Answer: I matched mine with the penn prevail PRESF1530S10 with 40# spider wire brade. 10' 1-5 oz lead not much need to go over 10' in short surf of the gulf. Hualing in a 4' black tip shark was a breaze for this setup, but still left me feeling it was a satisfying fight. When needed I switch it over to a 7' med/hvy boat rod for jigging or bait runner function on large floating baits. Fantastic build quality, feel, and drag on this reel!

Answer: If by reverse you mean can you let out line by pushing a lever which lets the spool unwind, the answer is no. One has to either open the bale or loosen the drag. It is sometimes a pain but you do get use to it. I like the reel. I use it to fish in the surf and I can throw my bait out a pretty good distance.
Answer: Depends on what you mean by reverse. The handle can be moved from one side to the other to allow either a left or right hand retrieve. Or if you are concerned the reel will foul because of excessive spool speed, this is a spinning reel which as a type does not have this problem. Bait casting reels have this problem and are sometimes designed with an anti-reverse feature to minimize this occurring.

Answer: Thee 8500 is a conventional spinning reel and the LL is a live liner reel, which includes an additional rear drag system for drifting live baits and adjusting the outgoing tension on the presentation of live or drifting baits.
Answer: I bought the 4500LL for surf perch. The LL is an additional drag switch for live bait fishing. However, I've found it to be very helpful when adjusting the line length for a cast; you can flip the drag switch, adjust your line, and then flip the switch again to retension.
Answer: The LL stands for Live Liner and allows you the option to flip a lever at the back of the reel that sets minimal drag. The advantage is when a fish strikes it can take off without the sudden jerk of full drag. When you are ready flip the switch and full drag is set along with the hook.

Answer: The 4500LL is a great real. I have mine paired with a Penn Battalion inshore rod. I bought it because I found it at a cheap price so I hardly used it at first. When I started using it I fell in love and bought another one. Sad thing is that sale was over so I paid more for the second one but I had to have it. LOL.

Answer: Some good line for you reel, Braid or monofiloment, maybe a Sand Spike to hold your rod. Anything else I would ask at the Bait shop as far as hook/leader size, sinker weight what are the preferred baits for the kinds of fishes that are bitting. Be friendly at the bait shop there is a wealth of information to be gleened there.

One of my favorite reels (for salt or fresh). Heavy, but an absolute beast. I have a 6500 on a surf rod with braid and it can cast a mile. Drag is smooth and so is reeling in or working a fish. Feels like a rock.

if you are using a spinning reel and you are cranking the handle to close the bail....you’re doing it wrong and hurting the reel. Stop it and stop being lazy. Close it manually. Easy way to grind gears and break things.....no matter the size of the reel.
If you aren’t rinsing it off after each use, that is on you. You are damaging your own reel.
If you are reeling a fish while it is pulling drag, you are doing it wrong. Let the reel and the rod work for you.
But seriously, never reel closed the bail. Always do it manually.

Smooth Quality reel. I probably don't need the LL model but figured it was only a couple bucks more, why not. Reel is not heavy but has enough weight for you to know that it is metal and will stand the tests you put it up to. Plenty of grease inside, I didn't need to do anything, its ready to go. I spooled it with 20lb power pro braid 300 yards fit no problem. Using it on a Hurricane Calico Jack 7' Medium rod. Awesome combo, much better feel than the penn combo. I am satisfied with my purchase and would recommend to others. I will be getting a few more of these spinfishers like the 6500.

For the fishing we do here in South Florida, the Mighty Spinfisher doesn’t hold up well. They have a seal that holds in any water that gets in. And trust me...you can’t make a reel water proof. Any water that gets in stays in from the gasket they have. And the only way to clean it out effectively is to take it apart and clean it. I’ve been wade fishing with clients for 2 years using Penn Clash, no issues. Tried using Spinfishers within 3 weeks, taking it apart and ordering new bearings.

I like to thoroughly test out products before writing reviews. I bought this reel about a year ago, because of the good reviews I've read and seen on Youtube. I planned to use it as my main work horse when salt water fishing, but after the first wade fishing trip I realized that this reel is a beast. For perspective I'm a fairly strong person that likes to power lift, and that works in construction, but this reel is heavy and not for the weak. It wore me out after the first hundred casts. I usually cast about three hundred times, covering about 250-300 yards of grass flats. I have it paired with a Penn Allegiance 7' fast action rod that balances itself out. I use it mainly while kayak fishing now, and that's where it truly shines. I use it to fish bottom or when using a popping cork. It handles ocean spray very well on kayak and boat. I've reeled in bull reds and fifteen pound stubborn stingrays that suction cup themselves to the sand and mud of Galveston Bay. I still use it to wade fish, but only when surf fishing the beach front. Because, of how well it's sealed I don't have to worry too much about sand or salt water getting inside the reel. With that said though, I'm careful of not dunking it in the water, or lying it on the sand. I also rinse all my gear after every trip, and that's all it needs. I make a conscious effort to organize the truck bed, but it's solid enough to handle a reasonable amount of truck bed abuse when commuting. I haven't had to crack it open yet, but I imagine when I do, It'll be fairly easily. I was considering getting a smaller 3500 before purchasing the 4500, because of the weight issue. Now that I know it's strengths and weakness, I'm considering getting a 6500 or 7500 for offshore/nearshore, surf, and trolling.

I have purchased three of these now in three different sizes. Nothing but good things to say about them. Super smooth drag. Last fall caught a 70 pound fish on the 4500 and 15# mono with no issues. Have caught striper, cobia, shark, and giant blue catfish with these reels. Excellent.

We have been shark fishing and blue fishing with these reels for a few seasons. Between a friend and I we have three of these Penn live liners thus far among a field of Shimanos.
The oldest of these reels was a 4500LL and it got sent back last season after about 4 seasons of moderate use. Peen elected to replace the reel instead of repairing it. I basically got a new real for $40.
The other two we have are 6500LL and they've been around for one season. One of them has a malfunctioning live liner at the start of its second season.
The Penns are ok for the money and their drag pressure shines in comparison to most reels their size. This is why we chose the 6500s for shark fishing.
This being said a Shimano Bait Runner D out classes this reel in all features except drag. These reels are supposed to be sealed and we now have two of three them needing repair. The Shimano Bait Runners used along side them have only required a handle to be replaced due to it getting stiff from salt water use. The Shimano is also an all around smoother reel so they have much more use then the Penns.
Bottom line is it has a sweet drag but is a so so reel that fails to shine in any other aspect.

very solid heavy duty reel i got the 12lb-20lb reel 406 i think very nice set up paired with a rod/w line rating 12-15lb medium action ugly stick rod this rocks i was casting over about 150yds with a 2oz canonball sinker and over a hundred on a spinner and 1 1/4 oz egg weight one of the best money can buy

This is the second one of these reels that have failed within the first year of owning. I am an avid fisherman who takes extra care cleaning my gear after every single trip. While the low cost is attractive, spending the time or the money to rebuild these after they fail is not worth the end result, considering the bait runner drag is not consistent to begin with. I am officially done with this series of Penn reels.

Reel is not heavy but has enough weight for you to know that it is metal and will stand the tests you put it up to. Plenty of grease inside, I didn't need to do anything, its ready to go. I spooled it with 20lb power pro braid 300 yards fit no problem. Using it on a Hurricane Calico Jack 7' Medium rod. Awesome combo, much better feel than the penn combo. I am satisfied with my purchase and would recommend to others. I will be getting a few more of these spinfishers like the 6500.

I bought this reel for by BF and we have been dealing with headaches ever since. 1. Within a month the LL (live line) feature failed on the reel. We took it to a PENN CERTIFIED service center Angler's Choice on 1910 Rosecrans Street. Called first no issues. Got there and all they are willing to do is charge me more money to send it to Penn. You all can keep your defective reel. DO NOT BUY!!!!!! READ REVIEWS AND BELIEVE PENNS FAILURE WILL COST YOU, YES YOU THE CONSUMER MORE!!!!

If you use hard lures this is model works great. Excellent beach trough and breaker wave range. Lacks the braided line capacity for long casting +1oz without a shock leader. If you use live bait or slow jig, the 4500 LL is a must.

Robin : Beware, you may get a previously opened and possibly returned reel.
Appears to be a prior return since packaging and parts were loose in the box. Seal on box was also broken and product was put in the box so that the box didn’t close properly. Bail is very hard to engage. Reel doesn’t stop smoothly. Clearly damaged or defective. I would have requested an exchange, but since this wasn’t brand new, I don’t trust the seller to ensure a replacement would be new.

2 teeth broke on the main gear while reeling in a 22 inch striped bass from the surf. I had the drag open with 2 rotations. This should have never happened. I used the reel no more then 40 times since I got it 2 years ago.

This real barely lasted two years. Granted it is used heavily in saltwater fishing but the drag is completely locked up, I had to Hacksaw off the bail because it literally froze up due to corrosion. Going back to Shimano

Fishing Logic : Finally, a sealed and durable long casting reel.
I've wanted a saltwater capable long caster for a while now and this product gives you just that. I've shied away from models such as the Shimano Ultegra because I wasn't sure how'd they hold up in the salt. Let me break it down for you.
Pros: Fully sealed, saltwater resistant. Just like any other Spinfisher this reel is resistant to splashing, sand, and the occasional dunking. This is important as I do a lot of jetty fishing where splashes from waves are commonplace.
Extremely smooth worm gear oscillation system. I've counted roughly 22 to 23 wraps of line from when the spool moves from top to bottom (Compare this to a Penn Battle II which only gives you about 6 or 7). This creates superb line lay which allows for phenomenal castability. Wind knots are a thing of the past.
Manual bail trip. Penn was smart to do this, no more breaking off $30 plugs.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, this reel has a lot of cranking power for a long caster. Bear in mind that most European long casters are designed for lighter freshwater applications such as carp or eel fishing. I have reeled down on 20lb blues and pulled up bass from ocean inlets without issue.
Cons: It's heavy. It can definitely wear on you if you plan on casting plugs all day. However, it is 7500 size so it sort of comes with the territory.
Recommendations: Be sure to pair this with at least an 11 foot medium heavy power rod to get the most from its performance. A 12 or 13 footer is even more ideal. Also, a fast action rod will get it out there even further.

Basically, to get straight to the point, this is a high quality reel with little to no real maintenance required, yet is built for and works amazing in saltwater. I fish from shore with this, fish from boats as well. I have the 6500 as it, for me, is a great all around do anything and everything reel. Nothing negative to say.

I have two 4500 ssg reels that I love for surfcasting. They're getting old and I replace parts as they wear or break, especially the bail spring and dog (trips the bail). I had the Spinfisher SSV4500 in my wish list and my wife got it for me for Christmas. I haven't fished with it yet, but I didn't know it was manual bail until I tried it and the bail trip was very hard and then I read the comments. I like the manual bail and do that with my old reels

I have used "Penn Spinfisher SS reals for 40 years. From the 420 SS UL, to there 8500 SS big water real and have never had any trouble at all. They cost a bit more than some ,less than others and the quality is always there. I also like to use Penn rods matched with the size reel I have . Matched they are an unbeatable combo. The Newer Reels for the super line are a nice touch. Peen just keeps getting better, Right-On PEEN. Take care of them and they will last a life time. Thanks, Tom

One of my favorite reels (for salt or fresh). Heavy, but an absolute beast. I have a 6500 on a surf rod with braid and it can cast a mile. Drag is smooth and so is reeling in or working a fish. Feels like a rock.
Solid. Has had numerous dunks and drops. All you need to do is rinse it with fresh water.
To those offering bad reviews:
if you are using a spinning reel and you are cranking the handle to close the bail....you’re doing it wrong and hurting the reel. Stop it and stop being lazy. Close it manually. Easy way to grind gears and break things.....no matter the size of the reel.
If you aren’t rinsing it off after each use, that is on you. You are damaging your own reel.
If you are reeling a fish while it is pulling drag, you are doing it wrong. Let the reel and the rod work for you.
But seriously, never reel closed the bail. Always do it manually.

I like to thoroughly test out products before writing reviews. I bought this reel about a year ago, because of the good reviews I've read and seen on Youtube. I planned to use it as my main work horse when salt water fishing, but after the first wade fishing trip I realized that this reel is a beast. For perspective I'm a fairly strong person that likes to power lift, and that works in construction, but this reel is heavy and not for the weak. It wore me out after the first hundred casts. I usually cast about three hundred times, covering about 250-300 yards of grass flats. I have it paired with a Penn Allegiance 7' fast action rod that balances itself out. I use it mainly while kayak fishing now, and that's where it truly shines. I use it to fish bottom or when using a popping cork. It handles ocean spray very well on kayak and boat. I've reeled in bull reds and fifteen pound stubborn stingrays that suction cup themselves to the sand and mud of Galveston Bay. I still use it to wade fish, but only when surf fishing the beach front. Because, of how well it's sealed I don't have to worry too much about sand or salt water getting inside the reel. With that said though, I'm careful of not dunking it in the water, or lying it on the sand. I also rinse all my gear after every trip, and that's all it needs. I make a conscious effort to organize the truck bed, but it's solid enough to handle a reasonable amount of truck bed abuse when commuting. I haven't had to crack it open yet, but I imagine when I do, It'll be fairly easily. I was considering getting a smaller 3500 before purchasing the 4500, because of the weight issue. Now that I know it's strengths and weakness, I'm considering getting a 6500 or 7500 for offshore/nearshore, surf, and trolling.

penn battles rock but over time the tiny parts in this reel give way. I went to the conflict- the black ones and they seem to better. Now I went full spin fishers and they are rock solid water tight fully sealed. if you are gonna kayak fish or get salty splash on your reel go for pen spin fisher. I fish hard and often and fresh water rinse after each use then I spray silicone or reel magic to remove water then wipe clean. if you buy nice stuff take care of it. my buddy has penns 30 years old still work perfect! hope this helps.
