Answer: it is on the heavy size. especially for inshore and/or if you are casting and using plastics. if you are just bottom fishing it wouldn't be too bad. i would HIGHLY recommend to you to get the PENN CONFLICT 2500 or 3000 instead. if you go to bass pro shop. com they should have the exact weights of these reels.but buy them on amazon or walmart to get the lower price

Answer: The LL or live liner has a feature that allows the reel to free spool without leaving the bail open, it is great for cobia fishing or using live bait, however, I had 2 6500LL and sent both of them back because the live liner function failed. I went with the shimano bait runner and never looked back.

Answer: I matched mine with the penn prevail PRESF1530S10 with 40# spider wire brade. 10' 1-5 oz lead not much need to go over 10' in short surf of the gulf. Hualing in a 4' black tip shark was a breaze for this setup, but still left me feeling it was a satisfying fight. When needed I switch it over to a 7' med/hvy boat rod for jigging or bait runner function on large floating baits. Fantastic build quality, feel, and drag on this reel!

Answer: On a spinning reel, reel size is important depending on the line size you intend to use. The SSV3500 is for 4 to 8 lb. mono line or 10 to 20 lb. braid line. This is a good fresh water or light in-shore saltwater reel.

Answer: If by reverse you mean can you let out line by pushing a lever which lets the spool unwind, the answer is no. One has to either open the bale or loosen the drag. It is sometimes a pain but you do get use to it. I like the reel. I use it to fish in the surf and I can throw my bait out a pretty good distance.

Answer: Depends on what you mean by reverse. The handle can be moved from one side to the other to allow either a left or right hand retrieve. Or if you are concerned the reel will foul because of excessive spool speed, this is a spinning reel which as a type does not have this problem. Bait casting reels have this problem and are sometimes designed with an anti-reverse feature to minimize this occurring.

Answer: Thee 8500 is a conventional spinning reel and the LL is a live liner reel, which includes an additional rear drag system for drifting live baits and adjusting the outgoing tension on the presentation of live or drifting baits.

Answer: I bought the 4500LL for surf perch. The LL is an additional drag switch for live bait fishing. However, I've found it to be very helpful when adjusting the line length for a cast; you can flip the drag switch, adjust your line, and then flip the switch again to retension.

Answer: The LL stands for Live Liner and allows you the option to flip a lever at the back of the reel that sets minimal drag. The advantage is when a fish strikes it can take off without the sudden jerk of full drag. When you are ready flip the switch and full drag is set along with the hook.

Answer: The 4500LL is a great real. I have mine paired with a Penn Battalion inshore rod. I bought it because I found it at a cheap price so I hardly used it at first. When I started using it I fell in love and bought another one. Sad thing is that sale was over so I paid more for the second one but I had to have it. LOL.

Besides purchasing the reel and the rod, is there anything else i need to purchase for surf casting?

Answer: Some good line for you reel, Braid or monofiloment, maybe a Sand Spike to hold your rod. Anything else I would ask at the Bait shop as far as hook/leader size, sinker weight what are the preferred baits for the kinds of fishes that are bitting. Be friendly at the bait shop there is a wealth of information to be gleened there.

I have been buying and using Penn spinning reels (started with the green reel) for nearly 50 years. I have a 716, 714, 550, 950, and a 260 Slammer and fish about a 100 days/year in Hawaii. When I retire next year I plan to fish more often. For some reason, this reel can cast much farther out than the others. I love the thick bail as it holds its shape and does not stick like the thinner wire ones. Having a sealed shaft, the handle does not spin freely as there is always some resistance. Being that I whip in the surf and the reel always gets salt water splashed on, the sealed design is perfect for my use. I will find out how effective this sealed design is when I take it apart for servicing after the summer. The reel is rather heavy for its class because it has a metal body. I prefer a metal instead of a lightweight graphite body as it does not warp/flex during use and the internal gears last longer.

I live on the beach in Florida and fish all the time. I have had this rod for 2.5 years. It has been pulled out of the rod holder into the water twice, has taken a ton of sand and has caught a ton of fish. It is still as good as new. I just rinse with fresh water and oil the gears once a year. I have tried other brands to save money and none of them can withstand the abuse of surf fishing. This is my go to rod. Light enough to catch the little fish, strong enough to land the big snook . Highly recommend!

mounted it on a 11 foot big water ugly stik and it casts a mile with a four ounce spider weight and cut bait. I put on 30lb spider braid and had no problems landing monster red after monster red. I cant believe I waited this long to upgrade my reels.

penn battles rock but over time the tiny parts in this reel give way. I went to the conflict- the black ones and they seem to better. Now I went full spin fishers and they are rock solid water tight fully sealed. if you are gonna kayak fish or get salty splash on your reel go for pen spin fisher. I fish hard and often and fresh water rinse after each use then I spray silicone or reel magic to remove water then wipe clean. if you buy nice stuff take care of it. my buddy has penns 30 years old still work perfect! hope this helps.

I have several Penn spinfisher V reels from 3500 to 6500 size, and love them all. Bought the Live-Line (LL) model in 6500 size and it rocks.
Fishing Cape Cod canal is a torture test and other brands have failed me, but not Penn. This model casts and retrieves effortlessly and has the horsepower to handle the current.
Spooled up some 50 pound braid with 30 pound fluorocarbon, works great whether bottom fishing mackerel chunks or throwing big pencil poppers. A++

I would like to start this by saying there are TWO kinds of "Saltwater Reels":

1. Used IN Saltwater
2. Used IN the SURF

There's a big difference between those two. Most reels that say they're rated for "Saltwater" do not necessarily mean they're rated for the surf. The key factor being that "Surf" conditions are more harsh due to the fine grit and sand that can get into the reels, and "Reelly" messing up your day. On incoming surf, the water is loaded with ultra fine sediment, and more often than not your reel is going to get either splashed or even dunked in the water from time to time, this fine grit is a killer on reels.
I have a few Saltwater spin reels that say saltwater rated, however in the surf they took a death within a couple trips (maybe 10 to 15 hours of use), having to be opened up and cleaned out, as they eventually started to fail (Actually reeling became labored due to the fine grit that got into them, affecting gearing and spool post actuation). To note: I practice all the due diligence in taking care of my gear, rinsing everything with freshwater, extensively, after every session. I then use an air compressor and blow out the excess water, fallowed by lubricating sprays (some silicone, some not), followed by another wipe down and test use to clear the excess.
So far, putting this Penn to the test has proven the SpinfisherV to be a very good reel. The slammer drag, being sealed, I think is a big part of that. I fully immersed it, a few times in the surf, and it performed flawlessly. The reel is pretty beefy, you'll feel it's "Heft" right when you take it out of the box. The bail system is very solid, not flimsy, and the drag system is quite sensitive and smooth. I have to say so far I'm impressed and will update accordingly if I have any problems. But so far, it's been a great reel.

The Morgans : GREAT SURF REEL!

This is an awesome reel !...once you spool it with Berkley trilene, not braid.
this is a large, solid reel! and yes it has a manual bail which works great when
power casting 4 ounce storm sinkers in the surf. Only the 7500 LC (long cast! )

We tried braid in the surf and the drag from the water was horrible, stick with mono.
Teamed up with a 13 foot surf rod this reel really cranks!

One of the greatest, HUGEST spinning reels in history. I got it for tarpon, shark and big grouper, but I think you could catch anything on it. I already had some 8000s, but love having the 10.5 :D

3500 is a great light weight size for redfish and bay fishing. Strong and smooth. I've used my 6500LL all season and I opened it up and it's still water tight!

Alvin Mendoza : Main drag broke after first outing.

The reel broke after being used once at a 1/2 day fishing trip catching 4 rockfish and a sculpin. The main drag system no longer worked and only the live liner drag was engaged no matter which way the switch was located.

Robin : Beware, you may get a previously opened and possibly returned reel.

Appears to be a prior return since packaging and parts were loose in the box. Seal on box was also broken and product was put in the box so that the box didn’t close properly. Bail is very hard to engage. Reel doesn’t stop smoothly. Clearly damaged or defective. I would have requested an exchange, but since this wasn’t brand new, I don’t trust the seller to ensure a replacement would be new.

Very robust reel with extremely smooth spinning action. It's an American product and its quality really shines. Looking forward to many years with this one. It is a bit heavier than it's competitors but it also doesn't feel flimsy like it's competitors.

It's got a weak Bell arm. It showed up bent. More bent then it's supposed to be. I messaged the seller but wasn't going to send it back and go through the trouble. I bent it back and figure I'll just buy another Bell arm if this one starts to bend up to much. I do love this reel though. It's a beast

I caught a nice bull red on this reel last weekend. So far, so good. No issues to report. I bought a 9000 size reel. The only downside to it the weight, which is an issue if you plan on casting a lot while walking to and from the surf.

Great reel, solid. I kayak fish a lot on the Texas coast and this reel has held up great for 2 seasons so far. Your gear more splash/spray that average when kayak fishing. Don't have to worry too much about water intrusion. Very low maintenance reel that is smooth and packs a punch.

I have two of these Penn reels that I purchased over two years ago. I go out very often and have never had any problem with the reels. I have had no problems with the drag which is amazing and no rust. These are expensive but well worth it for all the time you spend offshore fishing for trophy kingfish!

Solid drag, great line capacity, casts perfect. Its heavy of course but its built solid landed a 4ft black tip and 5ft sand shark with it no issues. Plan on catching more.

I like to thoroughly test out products before writing reviews. I bought this reel about a year ago, because of the good reviews I've read and seen on Youtube. I planned to use it as my main work horse when salt water fishing, but after the first wade fishing trip I realized that this reel is a beast. For perspective I'm a fairly strong person that likes to power lift, and that works in construction, but this reel is heavy and not for the weak. It wore me out after the first hundred casts. I usually cast about three hundred times, covering about 250-300 yards of grass flats. I have it paired with a Penn Allegiance 7' fast action rod that balances itself out. I use it mainly while kayak fishing now, and that's where it truly shines. I use it to fish bottom or when using a popping cork. It handles ocean spray very well on kayak and boat. I've reeled in bull reds and fifteen pound stubborn stingrays that suction cup themselves to the sand and mud of Galveston Bay. I still use it to wade fish, but only when surf fishing the beach front. Because, of how well it's sealed I don't have to worry too much about sand or salt water getting inside the reel. With that said though, I'm careful of not dunking it in the water, or lying it on the sand. I also rinse all my gear after every trip, and that's all it needs. I make a conscious effort to organize the truck bed, but it's solid enough to handle a reasonable amount of truck bed abuse when commuting. I haven't had to crack it open yet, but I imagine when I do, It'll be fairly easily. I was considering getting a smaller 3500 before purchasing the 4500, because of the weight issue. Now that I know it's strengths and weakness, I'm considering getting a 6500 or 7500 for offshore/nearshore, surf, and trolling.
