When needed I switch it over to a 7' med/hvy boat rod for jigging or bait runner function on large floating baits. Fantastic build quality, feel, and drag on this reel!

Answer: If by reverse you mean can you let out line by pushing a lever which lets the spool unwind, the answer is no. One has to either open the bale or loosen the drag. It is sometimes a pain but you do get use to it. I like the reel. I use it to fish in the surf and I can throw my bait out a pretty good distance.
Answer: Depends on what you mean by reverse. The handle can be moved from one side to the other to allow either a left or right hand retrieve. Or if you are concerned the reel will foul because of excessive spool speed, this is a spinning reel which as a type does not have this problem. Bait casting reels have this problem and are sometimes designed with an anti-reverse feature to minimize this occurring.

Answer: Thee 8500 is a conventional spinning reel and the LL is a live liner reel, which includes an additional rear drag system for drifting live baits and adjusting the outgoing tension on the presentation of live or drifting baits.
Answer: I bought the 4500LL for surf perch. The LL is an additional drag switch for live bait fishing. However, I've found it to be very helpful when adjusting the line length for a cast; you can flip the drag switch, adjust your line, and then flip the switch again to retension.
Answer: The LL stands for Live Liner and allows you the option to flip a lever at the back of the reel that sets minimal drag. The advantage is when a fish strikes it can take off without the sudden jerk of full drag. When you are ready flip the switch and full drag is set along with the hook.

Answer: The 4500LL is a great real. I have mine paired with a Penn Battalion inshore rod. I bought it because I found it at a cheap price so I hardly used it at first. When I started using it I fell in love and bought another one. Sad thing is that sale was over so I paid more for the second one but I had to have it. LOL.

Answer: Some good line for you reel, Braid or monofiloment, maybe a Sand Spike to hold your rod. Anything else I would ask at the Bait shop as far as hook/leader size, sinker weight what are the preferred baits for the kinds of fishes that are bitting. Be friendly at the bait shop there is a wealth of information to be gleened there.

Smooth drag. Amazing durability... Once taken apart it is easily cleaned and works like new again. Dropped one in salt water for 30 minutes before finding it. Took it apart and cleaned/oiled/greased it. Still works like new.

I've wanted a saltwater capable long caster for a while now and this product gives you just that. I've shied away from models such as the Shimano Ultegra because I wasn't sure how'd they hold up in the salt. Let me break it down for you.
Pros: Fully sealed, saltwater resistant. Just like any other Spinfisher this reel is resistant to splashing, sand, and the occasional dunking. This is important as I do a lot of jetty fishing where splashes from waves are commonplace.
Extremely smooth worm gear oscillation system. I've counted roughly 22 to 23 wraps of line from when the spool moves from top to bottom (Compare this to a Penn Battle II which only gives you about 6 or 7). This creates superb line lay which allows for phenomenal castability. Wind knots are a thing of the past.
Manual bail trip. Penn was smart to do this, no more breaking off $30 plugs.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, this reel has a lot of cranking power for a long caster. Bear in mind that most European long casters are designed for lighter freshwater applications such as carp or eel fishing. I have reeled down on 20lb blues and pulled up bass from ocean inlets without issue.
Cons: It's heavy. It can definitely wear on you if you plan on casting plugs all day. However, it is 7500 size so it sort of comes with the territory.

The oldest of these reels was a 4500LL and it got sent back last season after about 4 seasons of moderate use. Peen elected to replace the reel instead of repairing it. I basically got a new real for $40.
The other two we have are 6500LL and they've been around for one season. One of them has a malfunctioning live liner at the start of its second season.
The Penns are ok for the money and their drag pressure shines in comparison to most reels their size. This is why we chose the 6500s for shark fishing.
This being said a Shimano Bait Runner D out classes this reel in all features except drag. These reels are supposed to be sealed and we now have two of three them needing repair. The Shimano Bait Runners used along side them have only required a handle to be replaced due to it getting stiff from salt water use. Ive got 3 of these - a 6500 and 2 4500, all 3liveliners, and 2 other penn reels. I dont think theyre still made in the usa, but they are well made. I am hard on gear and these hold up really well.
They arent sealed quite as well as the super expensive ones, but they are sealed pretty good. I think the drag isnt sealed maybe? They WILL take a dunking, but nmyou cannot crank or otherwise spin the reel while its under or it will still leak a bit and need to be opened to clean and lube.

The Honest Critique : Penn Spinfisher SSV105000 - A Beast Of A Reel - Perfect For Gator Hunting!
My new Penn Spinfisher SSV105000 is a beast! Oh sure, there are better made reels with somewhat similar capacity... for $1,000.00! Who needs that noise! I mounted this reel on a 6' heavy action Penn Carnage Spinning Rod CARJGII80200S60 which is also a beast! The huge and very tall eyelets match perfectly to my Penn SVV10500 reel. As I am a gator hunter I added 400lb test braided Dyneema and 600lb American Fishing Wire snaps, swivels and cable.

Tinkeringeek : Solid Feel
Beefy and has a solid feel to it. Made with high quality part, and has a good finish to the overall unit. I own 2 other models so this now has been added to my fishing gear as the 3rd one. I like the idea of sealed bearing since most of my fishing has been salt fishing from either piers or beaches. Couple this with a light rod really does the job of casting easy. Get it, you won't regret it.

For the fishing we do here in South Florida, the Mighty Spinfisher doesn’t hold up well. They have a seal that holds in any water that gets in. And trust me...you can’t make a reel water proof. Any water that gets in stays in from the gasket they have. And the only way to clean it out effectively is to take it apart and clean it. I’ve been wade fishing with clients for 2 years using Penn Clash, no issues. Tried using Spinfishers within 3 weeks, taking it apart and ordering new bearings.

I've wanted a saltwater capable long caster for a while now and this product gives you just that. I've shied away from models such as the Shimano Ultegra because I wasn't sure how'd they hold up in the salt. Let me break it down for you.
Pros: Fully sealed, saltwater resistant. Just like any other Spinfisher this reel is resistant to splashing, sand, and the occasional dunking. This is important as I do a lot of jetty fishing where splashes from waves are commonplace.
Extremely smooth worm gear oscillation system. I've counted roughly 22 to 23 wraps of line from when the spool moves from top to bottom (Compare this to a Penn Battle II which only gives you about 6 or 7). This creates superb line lay which allows for phenomenal castability. Wind knots are a thing of the past.
Manual bail trip. Penn was smart to do this, no more breaking off $30 plugs.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, this reel has a lot of cranking power for a long caster. Bear in mind that most European long casters are designed for lighter freshwater applications such as carp or eel fishing. I have reeled down on 20lb blues and pulled up bass from ocean inlets without issue.
Cons: It's heavy. It can definitely wear on you if you plan on casting plugs all day. However, it is 7500 size so it sort of comes with the territory.
Recommendations: Be sure to pair this with at least an 11 foot medium heavy power rod to get the most from its performance. A 12 or 13 footer is even more ideal. Also, a fast action rod will get it out there even further.

I have used "Penn Spinfisher SS reals for 40 years. From the 420 SS UL, to there 8500 SS big water real and have never had any trouble at all. They cost a bit more than some ,less than others and the quality is always there. I also like to use Penn rods matched with the size reel I have . Matched they are an unbeatable combo. Robin : Beware, you may get a previously opened and possibly returned reel.
Appears to be a prior return since packaging and parts were loose in the box. Seal on box was also broken and product was put in the box so that the box didn’t close properly. Bail is very hard to engage. Reel doesn’t stop smoothly. Clearly damaged or defective. I would have requested an exchange, but since this wasn’t brand new, I don’t trust the seller to ensure a replacement would be new.

Smooth Quality reel. I probably don't need the LL model but figured it was only a couple bucks more, why not. Reel is not heavy but has enough weight for you to know that it is metal and will stand the tests you put it up to. Plenty of grease inside, I didn't need to do anything, its ready to go. I spooled it with 20lb power pro braid 300 yards fit no problem. Using it on a Hurricane Calico Jack 7' Medium rod. Awesome combo, much better feel than the penn combo. I am satisfied with my purchase and would recommend to others. I will be getting a few more of these spinfishers like the 6500.

Fishing Cape Cod canal is a torture test and other brands have failed me, but not Penn. This model casts and retrieves effortlessly and has the horsepower to handle the current.
Spooled up some 50 pound braid with 30 pound fluorocarbon, works great whether bottom fishing mackerel chunks or throwing big pencil poppers. A++

2. Used IN the SURF
There's a big difference between those two. Most reels that say they're rated for "Saltwater" do not necessarily mean they're rated for the surf. The key factor being that "Surf" conditions are more harsh due to the fine grit and sand that can get into the reels, and "Reelly" messing up your day. On incoming surf, the water is loaded with ultra fine sediment, and more often than not your reel is going to get either splashed or even dunked in the water from time to time, this fine grit is a killer on reels.
I have a few Saltwater spin reels that say saltwater rated, however in the surf they took a death within a couple trips (maybe 10 to 15 hours of use), having to be opened up and cleaned out, as they eventually started to fail (Actually reeling became labored due to the fine grit that got into them, affecting gearing and spool post actuation). To note: I practice all the due diligence in taking care of my gear, rinsing everything with freshwater, extensively, after every session. I then use an air compressor and blow out the excess water, fallowed by lubricating sprays (some silicone, some not), followed by another wipe down and test use to clear the excess.
So far, putting this Penn to the test has proven the SpinfisherV to be a very good reel. The slammer drag, being sealed, I think is a big part of that. I fully immersed it, a few times in the surf, and it performed flawlessly. The reel is pretty beefy, you'll feel it's "Heft" right when you take it out of the box. The bail system is very solid, not flimsy, and the drag system is quite sensitive and smooth. I have to say so far I'm impressed and will update accordingly if I have any problems. But so far, it's been a great reel.

CONS: It’s big, it’s heavy. This thing is a monster reel. It will tire you out quick if you use it like you would an average sized reel. There is no reverse wind and there is no bait clicker on the live liner drag.
Pro’s: This is a duel drag set-up reel. The main drag is rated up to 35 lbs and the live liner feature is adjustable to about 6 lbs resistance. You set the live liner drag to the point where the bait barely pulls your line. So when the fish takes it, he feels little/no resistance until you engage the main drag. It’s advertised as being sealed, and from what I can see, it has worked so far. (You can see the tech specs at the PENN website.)
I upgraded to this from the Shimano Socorro 8000 (27 pounds drag w/300 yrds of 65# PP), which is another good reel, but a little lacking when fighting monster fish. With this I can put on almost 500 yrds of 65# PP.
I use this while drifting/trolling bait behind my kayak. I have it paired with a PENN BW Carnage 7’ spinning (CARBW3050S70) rod (discontinued) and this thing has winched 2 sharks off the bottom in the range of 70 – 100 lbs like they were nothing. A shark hit the 8000 right at the yak and there was nothing that I could do other than watch the line go as he spooled me.
I was so impressed with the first reel; I just had to buy a second (matched w/Penn Carnage II 6’4” MH Jigging Spinning Rod). And at only $140, this is a steal.
Total stars: I’ll say about 4.8 out of 5.

Pro’s: This is a duel drag set-up reel. The main drag is rated up to 35 lbs and the live liner feature is adjustable to about 6 lbs resistance. You set the live liner drag to the point where the bait barely pulls your line. So when the fish takes it, he feels little/no resistance until you engage the main drag. It’s advertised as being sealed, and from what I can see, it has worked so far. (You can see the tech specs at the PENN website.)
I upgraded to this from the Shimano Socorro 8000 (27 pounds drag w/300 yrds of 65# PP), which is another good reel, but a little lacking when fighting monster fish. With this I can put on almost 500 yrds of 65# PP.
I use this while drifting/trolling bait behind my kayak. I have it paired with a PENN BW Carnage 7’ spinning (CARBW3050S70) rod (discontinued) and this thing has winched 2 sharks off the bottom in the range of 70 – 100 lbs like they were nothing. A shark hit the 8000 right at the yak and there was nothing that I could do other than watch the line go as he spooled me.
I was so impressed with the first reel; I just had to buy a second (matched w/Penn Carnage II 6’4” MH Jigging Spinning Rod). And at only $140, this is a steal.

I have two of these Penn reels that I purchased over two years ago. I go out very often and have never had any problem with the reels. I have had no problems with the drag which is amazing and no rust. These are expensive but well worth it for all the time you spend offshore fishing for trophy kingfish!

this is a large, solid reel! and yes it has a manual bail which works great when
power casting 4 ounce storm sinkers in the surf. Only the 7500 LC (long cast! )
has the manual bail check out review videos on youtube for more info.

Nice large handle makes reeling very comfortable and the retrieval fast and smooth!

This reel is a beast . In its price range , I trust it every single bit as my reels that cost much more. Stripers , gator Blues or Benito and Yellowfin.... This reel puts fish in the boat .
