When needed I switch it over to a 7' med/hvy boat rod for jigging or bait runner function on large floating baits. Fantastic build quality, feel, and drag on this reel!

Answer: If by reverse you mean can you let out line by pushing a lever which lets the spool unwind, the answer is no. One has to either open the bale or loosen the drag. It is sometimes a pain but you do get use to it. I like the reel. I use it to fish in the surf and I can throw my bait out a pretty good distance.
Answer: Depends on what you mean by reverse. The handle can be moved from one side to the other to allow either a left or right hand retrieve. Or if you are concerned the reel will foul because of excessive spool speed, this is a spinning reel which as a type does not have this problem. Bait casting reels have this problem and are sometimes designed with an anti-reverse feature to minimize this occurring.

Answer: Thee 8500 is a conventional spinning reel and the LL is a live liner reel, which includes an additional rear drag system for drifting live baits and adjusting the outgoing tension on the presentation of live or drifting baits.
Answer: I bought the 4500LL for surf perch. The LL is an additional drag switch for live bait fishing. However, I've found it to be very helpful when adjusting the line length for a cast; you can flip the drag switch, adjust your line, and then flip the switch again to retension.
Answer: The LL stands for Live Liner and allows you the option to flip a lever at the back of the reel that sets minimal drag. The advantage is when a fish strikes it can take off without the sudden jerk of full drag. When you are ready flip the switch and full drag is set along with the hook.

Answer: The 4500LL is a great real. I have mine paired with a Penn Battalion inshore rod. I bought it because I found it at a cheap price so I hardly used it at first. When I started using it I fell in love and bought another one. Sad thing is that sale was over so I paid more for the second one but I had to have it. LOL.

Answer: Some good line for you reel, Braid or monofiloment, maybe a Sand Spike to hold your rod. Anything else I would ask at the Bait shop as far as hook/leader size, sinker weight what are the preferred baits for the kinds of fishes that are bitting. Be friendly at the bait shop there is a wealth of information to be gleened there.

CONS: It’s big, it’s heavy. This thing is a monster reel. It will tire you out quick if you use it like you would an average sized reel. There is no reverse wind and there is no bait clicker on the live liner drag.
Pro’s: This is a duel drag set-up reel. The main drag is rated up to 35 lbs and the live liner feature is adjustable to about 6 lbs resistance. You set the live liner drag to the point where the bait barely pulls your line. So when the fish takes it, he feels little/no resistance until you engage the main drag. It’s advertised as being sealed, and from what I can see, it has worked so far. (You can see the tech specs at the PENN website.)
I upgraded to this from the Shimano Socorro 8000 (27 pounds drag w/300 yrds of 65# PP), which is another good reel, but a little lacking when fighting monster fish. With this I can put on almost 500 yrds of 65# PP.
I use this while drifting/trolling bait behind my kayak. I have it paired with a PENN BW Carnage 7’ spinning (CARBW3050S70) rod (discontinued) and this thing has winched 2 sharks off the bottom in the range of 70 – 100 lbs like they were nothing. A shark hit the 8000 right at the yak and there was nothing that I could do other than watch the line go as he spooled me.
I was so impressed with the first reel; I just had to buy a second (matched w/Penn Carnage II 6’4” MH Jigging Spinning Rod). And at only $140, this is a steal.

This is a heavy duty reel I intend on using in the surf as well as jigging. 6500 Reel holds over 300 yards of 40lb braid and is absolutely gorgeous. Matched with the correct rod, you have a great set up, that resists water intrusion and has powerful drag to stop fish. Reel is heavy, but I will be replacing my other spinners with this model after the season.

Smooth drag. Amazing durability... Once taken apart it is easily cleaned and works like new again. Dropped one in salt water for 30 minutes before finding it. Took it apart and cleaned/oiled/greased it. Still works like new.

The Honest Critique : Penn Spinfisher SSV105000 - A Beast Of A Reel - Perfect For Gator Hunting!
My new Penn Spinfisher SSV105000 is a beast! Oh sure, there are better made reels with somewhat similar capacity... for $1,000.00! Who needs that noise! I mounted this reel on a 6' heavy action Penn Carnage Spinning Rod CARJGII80200S60 which is also a beast! The huge and very tall eyelets match perfectly to my Penn SVV10500 reel. As I am a gator hunter I added 400lb test braided Dyneema and 600lb American Fishing Wire snaps, swivels and cable.
As a test I rigged up a 300lb barbell and lifted the entire thing off the ground. I had to hold the spool on the reel to do it, but the feat was quite impressive. I am amazed how thin this rod is and yet is casts 12 ounce 16/0 weighted treble hooks like nothing, even with the ridiculous 1.3mm thick line. Sadly I run out of line before this rod and reel combo runs out of cast. I guess the Spinfisher was never meant to hold 400lb test.

I am amazed how thin this rod is and yet is casts 12 ounce 16/0 weighted treble hooks like nothing, even with the ridiculous 1.3mm thick line. Sadly I run out of line before this rod and reel combo runs out of cast. I guess the Spinfisher was never meant to hold 400lb test.

We took it to a PENN CERTIFIED service center Angler's Choice on 1910 Rosecrans Street. Called first no issues. Got there and all they are willing to do is charge me more money to send it to Penn. For the fishing we do here in South Florida, the Mighty Spinfisher doesn’t hold up well. They have a seal that holds in any water that gets in. And trust me...you can’t make a reel water proof. Any water that gets in stays in from the gasket they have. And the only way to clean it out effectively is to take it apart and clean it. I’ve been wade fishing with clients for 2 years using Penn Clash, no issues. Tried using Spinfishers within 3 weeks, taking it apart and ordering new bearings.

I bought this reel last year and used it for rock fishing out of LA and it worked pretty well. This year I started going after yellowtail out of San Diego and on a recent trip I had a 10-15 lb bonito on the line and it totally destroyed the reel. I may have cranked on it accidentally a few times while the drag was running out but overall pretty disappointing... would have expected it to hold up a little better than it did. Used the reel prob 10 times. Oh well time to upgrade.

I've wanted a saltwater capable long caster for a while now and this product gives you just that. I've shied away from models such as the Shimano Ultegra because I wasn't sure how'd they hold up in the salt. Let me break it down for you.
Pros: Fully sealed, saltwater resistant. Just like any other Spinfisher this reel is resistant to splashing, sand, and the occasional dunking. This is important as I do a lot of jetty fishing where splashes from waves are commonplace.
Extremely smooth worm gear oscillation system. I've counted roughly 22 to 23 wraps of line from when the spool moves from top to bottom (Compare this to a Penn Battle II which only gives you about 6 or 7). This creates superb line lay which allows for phenomenal castability. Wind knots are a thing of the past.
Manual bail trip. Penn was smart to do this, no more breaking off $30 plugs.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, this reel has a lot of cranking power for a long caster. Bear in mind that most European long casters are designed for lighter freshwater applications such as carp or eel fishing. I have reeled down on 20lb blues and pulled up bass from ocean inlets without issue.

Really and truly an amazing spinner reel. I have used this paired up with a 12 foot uglystik and few hundred yards of 50-lb braid and its been phenomenal. It is definitely on the heavier side plus the rod I choose is not any lighter either. After getting into more surf fishing this was definitely a huge upgrade over my Penn Pursuit II rod/reel combo, and the weight difference was very much noticeable. I've got no problem flinging 3-6oz diamond jigs immense distances compared to the old rod/reel I had. The one feature I love that has come in very handy was the fact that the bail does not lock when you try to reel in while its open, nor does it lock with a particularly hard cast, I have lost many a lure and popper this way. Another notable feature worth mentioning is it is a sealed reel so a few dunks or splashes in saltwater wont make much of a dent in it. On the maiden trip I managed to catch two blue fish well over 15inches and they put up one crazy, and fun, fight. I purchased this in May 2016, it is now July so its been in use for about 2 months as of writing this and its performed amazingly well each time, surf fishing, night fishing, and pier fishing, its all been great.

My new Penn Spinfisher SSV105000 is a beast! Oh sure, there are better made reels with somewhat similar capacity... for $1,000.00! Who needs that noise! I mounted this reel on a 6' heavy action Penn Carnage Spinning Rod CARJGII80200S60 which is also a beast! The huge and very tall eyelets match perfectly to my Penn SVV10500 reel. As I am a gator hunter I added 400lb test braided Dyneema and 600lb American Fishing Wire snaps, swivels and cable.

I have two 4500 ssg reels that I love for surfcasting. They're getting old and I replace parts as they wear or break, especially the bail spring and dog (trips the bail). I had the Spinfisher SSV4500 in my wish list and my wife got it for me for Christmas. I haven't fished with it yet, but I didn't know it was manual bail until I tried it and the bail trip was very hard and then I read the comments. I like the manual bail and do that with my old reels

I've been using my Penn Spinfisher 4500 for over 2 years. This is my first review on this reel. All I can say is that I've dunked in saltwater this reel regularly, (1/week) ; Always clean with mild soap and rinse afterward, sand has been it's best friend and after all the use IT IS STILL STRONG. I do clean my reels with 'homemade' lubricants and try to maintain the reel once in a few months. You cannot go wrong with this Penn reel. If you are looking for longevity and sturdiness, it will not disappoint you. IT IS NOT the 'smoothest' or the lightest reel I have, it is more like industrial type reel but it is undisputedly the must-have for me. I use it for live bait casting, artificial lures, deep-sea fishing (yellow tails/snapper); One thing is a must...adjust the drag. I fish with 25-30lb braid (suffix ghost) and it has never disappointed me.

This is the almost the perfect fishing reel. It reels in like a dream, can handle just about any fish, and is sealed against water. The live liner feature is nice but it's still quite strong, even on the lowest setting. I'm not sure how valuable this feature would be for most fish.

CONS: It’s big, it’s heavy. This thing is a monster reel. It will tire you out quick if you use it like you would an average sized reel. There is no reverse wind and there is no bait clicker on the live liner drag.
Pro’s: This is a duel drag set-up reel. The main drag is rated up to 35 lbs and the live liner feature is adjustable to about 6 lbs resistance. You set the live liner drag to the point where the bait barely pulls your line. So when the fish takes it, he feels little/no resistance until you engage the main drag. It’s advertised as being sealed, and from what I can see, it has worked so far. (You can see the tech specs at the PENN website.)
I upgraded to this from the Shimano Socorro 8000 (27 pounds drag w/300 yrds of 65# PP), which is another good reel, but a little lacking when fighting monster fish. With this I can put on almost 500 yrds of 65# PP.
I use this while drifting/trolling bait behind my kayak. I have it paired with a PENN BW Carnage 7’ spinning (CARBW3050S70) rod (discontinued) and this thing has winched 2 sharks off the bottom in the range of 70 – 100 lbs like they were nothing. A shark hit the 8000 right at the yak and there was nothing that I could do other than watch the line go as he spooled me.
I was so impressed with the first reel; I just had to buy a second (matched w/Penn Carnage II 6’4” MH Jigging Spinning Rod). And at only $140, this is a steal.
Total stars: I’ll say about 4.8 out of 5.

penn battles rock but over time the tiny parts in this reel give way. I went to the conflict- the black ones and they seem to better. Now I went full spin fishers and they are rock solid water tight fully sealed. if you are gonna kayak fish or get salty splash on your reel go for pen spin fisher. I fish hard and often and fresh water rinse after each use then I spray silicone or reel magic to remove water then wipe clean. if you buy nice stuff take care of it. my buddy has penns 30 years old still work perfect! hope this helps.

I read many reviews on this reel and was sceptical about buying but decided to.I bought one as a tester and was satisfied so I bought a second and was so disappointed the very problem that I read about in the negative reviews occurred the live liner drag is not disengaging and giving a grinding sound I am sending it back. I had given two ???? but after what happened to the second reel I'm giving one ???? and that is for being a metal body reel.The drag failed spectacularly after three fishing trips and fresh water trips no salt water at all.The fish that was on had no more than ten lbs it was just a Arrowana that was fighting hard. This reel is crap no wonder the price keeps falling. Penn you did a horrible job or persons are selling defective reels on Amazon two out two is really bad.

I live on the beach in Florida and fish all the time. I have had this rod for 2.5 years. It has been pulled out of the rod holder into the water twice, has taken a ton of sand and has caught a ton of fish. It is still as good as new. I just rinse with fresh water and oil the gears once a year. I have tried other brands to save money and none of them can withstand the abuse of surf fishing. This is my go to rod. Light enough to catch the little fish, strong enough to land the big snook . Highly recommend!

I just spent the week fishing with the Spinfisher V and I loved it. It was incredibly fun to fight fish with and has excellent drag capabilities. The bail stays open when you cast and it seems to be very salt water resistant.
I chose the V over the Vl because the V has such a great reputation. Im sure the Vl will also gain an incredible reputation, but I wanted to go with the tried and true.
I matched this reel with a st croix triumph travel surf casting rod 10ft. The reel sat well and lined up well. I was able to cast 50 yards with minimal effort.
The reel looks nice and feels very smooth when retrieving.
The only downside of this reel is its weight. It is by far the heaviest reel I own. That being said I was still able to fish all day (without a rod holder) and not get too tired.
In one weekend I caught a record size kelp bass, a good sized smooth hound shark, 4 small leopard sharks, and four medium sized shovelnose guitar fish.
I chose the V over the Vl because the V has such a great reputation. Im sure the Vl will also gain an incredible reputation, but I wanted to go with the tried and true.

This is the second one of these reels that have failed within the first year of owning. I am an avid fisherman who takes extra care cleaning my gear after every single trip. While the low cost is attractive, spending the time or the money to rebuild these after they fail is not worth the end result, considering the bait runner drag is not consistent to begin with. I am officially done with this series of Penn reels.
