Questions about PENN Spinfisher V Spinning Fishing Reel
Q:
where is this reel made
Answer: The reel is made in China using Penn engineering specs, they are the same quality as the USA reels.
Answer: China. Main office and headquarters is on Huntingpark Ave in Philadelphia and were once made there. I took 3 reels there last fall for refurbishing. Like new!
Answer: I stopped buying Penn years ago when they moved their manufacturing to China, I was a big fan of their SS spinners. I think Ardent is the only USA made spinning reels and bait casters. If the readers know otherwise, please educate me. I love to support American workers and manufacturers as well as getting the benefits of superior quality in our products.
Answer: All penn reels are American made
Answer: Not sure were this reel is manufactured. I know that Penn Fishing Tackle Mfg is located in Philadelphia, Pa.
Answer: Ardent is an American owned company that designs products in the
Answer: This is made in China.
Answer: Made in China
Q:
Hello, what is the weight of this reel. I want to buy this for my wife and my kids (10 12 year old). Just want to make sure it is not heavy.
Answer: it is on the heavy size. especially for inshore and/or if you are casting and using plastics. if you are just bottom fishing it wouldn't be too bad. i would HIGHLY recommend to you to get the PENN CONFLICT 2500 or 3000 instead. if you go to bass pro shop. com they should have the exact weights of these reels.but buy them on amazon or walmart to get the lower price
Answer: For wife and kids a Spinfisher V 3,500 or 4,500 would work. the Penn battle II series is just as good.
Answer: This real is a little heavy for it's size.
Answer: It definitely has some weight to it. I don't think she'll be happy. I know my wife would prefer a Quantum with less weight.
Answer: It's definitely heavier than the conflict and battle. I like the 3500 better. More compact and great with 15-20lb braid and a 7' extra fast action rod
Q:
Does the reel come fully assembled?
Answer: With the exception of screwing the handle into place, the reel comes fully assembled, thank goodness!
Answer: Yes.
Answer: yes
Q:
How much lind can you put in this real?
Answer: 580 yards of 80 lb braid , don't use mono so I don't know, I fish for big fish with this reel.
Answer: A lot ! It says what it takes on the reel ! Depending on the line test .
Answer: Just look at the specs
Q:
what rod should I match up with this reel? Penn Spinfisher V SSV10500 Spinning Reel
Answer: I would recommend to use Penn spinning rod for big game such as Power Stick, Rampage or Bluwater Carnage. Currently, i'm using power stick and plan to buy Bluewater Carnage 3050S70
Answer: Sorry, I purchased SSV3500,,4500,5500 reels. SSV10500 would be for a much larger rod than I own.
Answer: It depends on your needs. I wanted something that could handle a pretty big fish (~30-75lbs), but that I could fit in my trunk. I bought this one, and I am very happy with the quality of it. It is made of great materials. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LZHBSO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Answer: 12' med heavy ugly stick for surf, 6-7' ugly stick tiger for boat.
Q:
Which reel would best be suited for fresh and inshore saltwater fishing, I'm looking for one to handle both from bass to reds to mangrove snapper?
Answer: 3500 will work fine without additional weight
Q:
Would this reel in size 3500 pair well with the st croix inshore mojo rod in size 8ft? Or should i get a bigger size for the rod?
Answer: The length isn't a problem if you're using it from shore or a boat, but more about the power of the rod, medium for a lighter setup or medium heavy for a beefier setup.
Q:

Q:
witch one of these reels are 75.99
Q:
Will a older spool 450ssg fit on this reel or another current penn reel?
Q:
What size reel is this...The pic say 3500...is that correct?
Q:
is it a right hand reel
Answer: It can be ether left or a right
Answer: Yes it is both hand
Answer: Hi Jeromy, yes it is.
Answer: Yes
Q:
how much yards of line can the hold
Answer: It depends of the line, see the specifications. I use 40# and it hold almost 300yrds
Answer: It varies with line rating Penn's website has a chart
Answer: Depends on the line used. Specifications can be found on Penn's website.
Answer: Check it on penn web site. It's stated very clearly on all the models.
Q:
Is our model 9500 a ssv9500
Answer: It is a SSV9500
Answer: Yes it is and it's a great reel. I love it.
Answer: It's a spinfisher v
Q:
Whats the difference between the 8500 and the 8500LL
Answer: The LL or live liner has a feature that allows the reel to free spool without leaving the bail open, it is great for cobia fishing or using live bait, however, I had 2 6500LL and sent both of them back because the live liner function failed. I went with the shimano bait runner and never looked back.
Answer: LL stands for live line, has a with bail, enabled free, spool, mode, with a light rear drag
Answer: Live Liner
Answer: LL lefthanded model
Q:
What size surf rod is appropriate for the 6500LL?
Answer: I matched mine with the penn prevail PRESF1530S10 with 40# spider wire brade. 10' 1-5 oz lead not much need to go over 10' in short surf of the gulf. Hualing in a 4' black tip shark was a breaze for this setup, but still left me feeling it was a satisfying fight. When needed I switch it over to a 7' med/hvy boat rod for jigging or bait runner function on large floating baits. Fantastic build quality, feel, and drag on this reel!
Answer: Nine to 10 foot rod is appropriate. I cast pretty far with a 7 foot rod on live sardine.
Answer: I matched it with a 10ft penn prevail MH 2 piece surf rod
Answer: I went with this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LZHBSO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00
Answer: 8'
Answer: Would say a 9 ft
Q:
What is the rated line capacity?
Answer: Mono: 300/8, 250/10, 185/12
Q:
what does reel size ?
Answer: On a spinning reel, reel size is important depending on the line size you intend to use. The SSV3500 is for 4 to 8 lb. mono line or 10 to 20 lb. braid line. This is a good fresh water or light in-shore saltwater reel.
Answer: Depending on the line u put on & how much line u need. The thicker line- less footage. Thinner line for smaller wheel allows for more line.
Q:
Does anyone else's make a slight muffled grinding noise when reeling in?
Answer: After 2 seasons of striped bass fishing my 6500ll does make a small amount of noise while reeling in now ,but still works great
Answer: Mine was smooth like butter the last time I used it..definitely rinse it out and try to take it apart and clean it, could you have sand or debris in it?
Answer: Mine is new and hardly used, but it is quiet and smooth
Answer: Mine doesn't. I keep it oiled and spray it with dawn and wipe with a sponge when finished fishing.
Answer: Not mine
Q:
I would like to know if the reel that you sold are manufactured in the usa or china?
Q:
Does anyone make reels other than in China
Q:
I’m seeing two different models in the picture one without the “ll” one with “liveliner”? is the one for $161 the penn spin fisher ssv 8500 ll?
Answer: the reel designation with the LL or ll indicates a live liner version
Q:
does it have reverse
Answer: If by reverse you mean can you let out line by pushing a lever which lets the spool unwind, the answer is no. One has to either open the bale or loosen the drag. It is sometimes a pain but you do get use to it. I like the reel. I use it to fish in the surf and I can throw my bait out a pretty good distance.
Answer: Depends on what you mean by reverse. The handle can be moved from one side to the other to allow either a left or right hand retrieve. Or if you are concerned the reel will foul because of excessive spool speed, this is a spinning reel which as a type does not have this problem. Bait casting reels have this problem and are sometimes designed with an anti-reverse feature to minimize this occurring.
Q:
6500LL & Penn Carnage 2 jigging spinning 6'6"/medium are good match for grouper?
Q:
Does it come in 5000 or 5500.? Thanks
Q:
Would the 10500 be suitable for large alligator gar, carp, sturgeon, paddlefish and even the occasional shark?
Answer: I would think so. The Spinfisher V or VI 10500 is a hefty reel.
Q:
Whats difference between V and VI
Answer: Well VI more smoothly than the old version and has GNC gear the new version that change a lot more durable reels
Q:
By any chance anyone tried to use this for a 10' rod? i just ordered a tsunami airwave elite surf spinning rod 10'6". this is cheaper than the other
Answer: I use it on a tsunami 9'6" but see no reason why you couldn't use on a 10'6".
Answer: i have mine set up with a Penn Carnage 7' Jigging rod.......where i fish its simply hook and reel in, no time to play with the fish. i don't see why it wouldn't be good with any other combo unless your ice fishing....lol. would be overkill.
Answer: I use this reel on an 11' and 13' rod. It works fine.
Q:
Why did the pice jumo from 109 to 135 over night? I almost bought it then went to check out and saw the price difference..cost more here than my local
Answer: It's good to check the quantity number when you're looking at items sometimes. The dealer that had it for that price might have been low on stock and somebody purchased it before you decide to. Same thing happened to me.
Q:
What is the best rod for the 9500
Answer: That depends on how you are fishing ; boat?, beach?
Answer: This is a large spinning reel not for trout or bass fishing. I mounted mine on a heavy 6' 6" fiberglass rod that I built up from a bare rod blank. I use it for snapper, grouper and large redfish etc. I think the Penn home website will give you suggestions as too what rods specs they suggest for this reel. Thanks and Regards.
Q:
What is the max drag on the 8500?
Q:
what is the weight of the 5500? the 6500 is 23 ozs, what does the 5500 weight?
Answer: About. 16.5 oz
Answer: 21.6 oz
Answer: 21.6oz
Q:
would the 65600v match up well with a 9 ft surf rod?
Answer: A 9ft medium rod or longer is ideal.
Q:
Can the 6500 reel handle a fish as heavy as 20 lbs? Or more?
Answer: Good for 50 lb fish, just have the right rod and line weight
Answer: Yes no problem. One hell of a reel!
Answer: Yes, we landed 40 lb. Blue cat, drag worked great!
Answer: That's a great question and unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to bring in such beast...
Answer: Yes no problem.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Would you recommend the 4500 for kingfish on a kayak?
Answer: Of course!!! This is a pretty tough reel for big fish. It also does great for casting. Good luck catching some big ones!!!
Q:
I just ordered the 7500 would that be fine on a 10 foot rod for bass or is the reel to big ?
Answer: http://www.pennfishing.com/penn-reels-spinning-reels-penn-spinfisher/penn-spinfisher-v-spinning/1290594.html
Q:
What size would be good for a 7’6” medium rod?
Answer: These are big heavy reels. I have a 6500 on a 10ft surf tod. You'll probably be good with 3500 or 4500, but could take 5000 to 6500 if you wanna sacrifice weight for more line
Answer: a 12 -20lb reel works good for that
Answer: Depends on the type of fishing you are doing, I would not use a spinning rod longer than 7' medium heavy with this reel for most situation.
Answer: Depends on what you want to fish for. Smaller fish then a smaller reel size, bigger fish then a bigger reel size.
Answer: I would think the 4500.
Answer: El 5000
Q:
What's the line weight limit ?
Answer: The spec on the 4500 are accurate - it has a max drag of 25 lbs and it lists Braid Capacity (yds/lb) of 365/15, 280/20, 200/30.
Answer: MONO CAPACITY: YD/LB 300/8 250/10 185/12
Answer: I have 30lb braid on mine with no problems. Love my reel!!!!
Q:
Is retrieve LEFT or RIGHT?
Answer: You can use it left or right handed. I love it so far. Lots of stoping power.
Answer: Your choice. Handle can be installed on either side.
Answer: both, handle can be put on either side
Q:
Is this 7500lc a good match with a 9' ml surf pole? any ideas i dont want a heavy pole or smaller reel?
Answer: I tried it and thought it was too heavy and went with a 6500 on the same size surf rod. I use my 7500lc on a 12 ft. heavy surf rod.
Answer: It is a fine reel.
Answer: To match this reel, you need at least a 11' surf rod
Answer: I have mine mounted on an old 9ft eagle claw surf rod. It will do anything I want it to do. Long cast are easy and over (40+-) lb test it says to go with a braided line.
Q:
Is this ths liveliner version?
Answer: If it has LL it is the live liner, of not its a regular reel. In all honesty look into the Shimano 8000D. It blows this reel out of the water
Answer: Not this model. But any reel model ending in LL is the one you are looking for
Q:
Will this reel fit on a Penn Battalion 12' surf rod?
Answer: Fit really isn't the issue. This is a BIG HEAVY reel! It will wear you out casting even for a little while. It will hold around 600-700m of 80lb braid. So you can pretty much hook the Red October, crank down the drag, and pray your rod doesn't explode.
Answer: Great for willy the woofer and it will
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
What diff between 8500 and 8500LL!
Answer: LL is the Live Line version of the 8500
Answer: Thee 8500 is a conventional spinning reel and the LL is a live liner reel, which includes an additional rear drag system for drifting live baits and adjusting the outgoing tension on the presentation of live or drifting baits.
Answer: I bought the 4500LL for surf perch. The LL is an additional drag switch for live bait fishing. However, I've found it to be very helpful when adjusting the line length for a cast; you can flip the drag switch, adjust your line, and then flip the switch again to retension.
Answer: The LL stands for Live Liner and allows you the option to flip a lever at the back of the reel that sets minimal drag. The advantage is when a fish strikes it can take off without the sudden jerk of full drag. When you are ready flip the switch and full drag is set along with the hook.
Q:
I mainly fish the NE for blues and striped bass, would the 4500 be suited for these fish/conditions or would i need to go bigger?
Answer: It's just a matter of choice, the 4500 has the backbone to handle them .I have caught a lot of 50+ flatbread and blue cats with no issues
Answer: Up to 25lbs of drag, I think you'd be okay with the 4500 and 50lb braid.
Answer: I spool 50# braid on both of mine .
Q:
Which model reel is best for surf fishing as far as casting distance? Im thinking about the 10500 is this a good reel for surf fishing
Answer: I have 4500,7500 10500. Casting distance determined more by rod length and action. My kids have caught big redfish and Jacks on the 4500 with 60lb braid. If you are big shark fishing then 7500 or 10500 better
Answer: I use a 6500ll on a 10ft prevail rod for striped bass and bluefish, I can get a pretty far cast and has no problem reeling in large stripers.
Q:
just got this in today and would like to know as to why when im spooling my line the live liner drag at bottom comes unscrewed and wont go back on?
Q:
Is this 7500lc a good match with a 9' ml surf pole? any ideas i dont want a heavy pole or smaller reel?

How much does the 7500 lc weight?
Answer: 27.2 oz out of the box. http://www.pennfishing.com/penn-reels-spinning-reels-penn-spinfisher/penn-spinfisher-v-spinning/1290594.html
Answer: All specs are listed below item on amazon
Answer: 1.7 pounds
Q:
Looking for a durable light setup, thinking 4500ll with medium ugly stik6.6, ocean dock fishing small mutton snapper approx 12inch+, young tarpon?
Answer: The 4500LL is a great real. I have mine paired with a Penn Battalion inshore rod. I bought it because I found it at a cheap price so I hardly used it at first. When I started using it I fell in love and bought another one. Sad thing is that sale was over so I paid more for the second one but I had to have it. LOL.
Q:
Besides purchasing the reel and the rod, is there anything else i need to purchase for surf casting?
Answer: Some good line for you reel, Braid or monofiloment, maybe a Sand Spike to hold your rod. Anything else I would ask at the Bait shop as far as hook/leader size, sinker weight what are the preferred baits for the kinds of fishes that are bitting. Be friendly at the bait shop there is a wealth of information to be gleened there.
Product reviews of PENN Spinfisher V Spinning Fishing Reel
Woody : Best Penn spinner yet!
I have been buying and using Penn spinning reels (started with the green reel) for nearly 50 years. I have a 716, 714, 550, 950, and a 260 Slammer and fish about a 100 days/year in Hawaii. When I retire next year I plan to fish more often. For some reason, this reel can cast much farther out than the others. I love the thick bail as it holds its shape and does not stick like the thinner wire ones. Having a sealed shaft, the handle does not spin freely as there is always some resistance. Being that I whip in the surf and the reel always gets salt water splashed on, the sealed design is perfect for my use. I will find out how effective this sealed design is when I take it apart for servicing after the summer. The reel is rather heavy for its class because it has a metal body. I prefer a metal instead of a lightweight graphite body as it does not warp/flex during use and the internal gears last longer.
Randall R. : Great reel
This a great seawater reel and I have even caught great lake salmon with it...Hard to beat a Penn. Drag works great and it holds plenty of line. Unless you're shark or wahoo fishing...lol
an honest reviewer : Bail-Less Surf Spinning Reel by Penn
I decided to purchase this reel from Penn because there is no bail to close on your line while you are making a powerful cast with a heavy lure or bait set up. I lost a big hook w/ leader baited with squid and a medium sized sinker last summer when a bail closed on me during a cast. I don't even want to think about loosing a $20 pencil popper.
This reel has performed perfectly so far. I use it at the beach surf casting in saltwater.
This reel has the following features:
Utilizes all metal construction. Aluminum, anodized to prevent corrosion.
5.6:1 gear ratio.
Water tight design uses seals to keep saltwater out.
5+1 Shielded stainless steel ball bearings - including anti-reverse bearing.
Weight - 22.5 oz.
Extra plastic washers - to adjust how the line lays on the spool. Mine does not need any adjustment.
Spool - Capacity 430 yards of 30 lb braid which is what I use. Spool has a rubber or vinyl coating to keep line from spinning on the spool. You can order extra spools directly by calling Penn.
Drag - Sealed. Dial up to a 30 lb drag instead of the usual 15 lbs. Material, I believe it is carbon fiber.
Using this reel has been great. When reeling in a lure the mechanical operation and feel is very smooth. There is no wobble, and this reel has been designed for the rotor mass to be in balance without a bail.
This is a heavy duty, dependable and solid reel. The drag can be adjusted to any setting you desire as changing by one click does not change the drag very much. The spool has a beveled inside face to help the line shoot out upon casting.
Using the reel can take some getting used to. You have to put the line on the roller bearing with your finger after casting. If this is new to you I recommend watching some videos on youtube to help you. Once the line is on the roller bearing you just reel the line in as usual and the line will never pop off of the roller bearing on its own. After you use this reel for a while, placing the line on the roller bearing will just become second nature or put another way you will do this without thinking about it or looking at it while doing it.
I'm having a lot of fun fishing with my new Penn Spinfisher V bail-less reel. Great value. Recommended !
DOMINIC : Not as golden looking on the inside
2 teeth broke on the main gear while reeling in a 22 inch striped bass from the surf. I had the drag open with 2 rotations. This should have never happened. I used the reel no more then 40 times since I got it 2 years ago.
Sandra S. Sherlin : Great quality
Very nice and smooth realing. Easy cast. Great design.
You can call me Sir : 8 Star Quality Saltwater Reel - Low Price for what You Get.
Basically, to get straight to the point, this is a high quality reel with little to no real maintenance required, yet is built for and works amazing in saltwater. I fish from shore with this, fish from boats as well. I have the 6500 as it, for me, is a great all around do anything and everything reel. Nothing negative to say.
Ken W. : Penn 1259871 Spinfisher V Spinning Fishing Reel, 4500
Love the reel. Great for saltwater fishing. Have 2500, 3500 & 5500 Penn reels.
Amazon Customer : Excellent reels
I have purchased three of these now in three different sizes. Nothing but good things to say about them. Super smooth drag. Last fall caught a 70 pound fish on the 4500 and 15# mono with no issues. Have caught striper, cobia, shark, and giant blue catfish with these reels. Excellent.
Cachafich-Infinity : Long cast is an understatement.
Casting this new Spinfisher was fun! During the first and only trip (so far) I threw it about three dozen times, each one was flawless. No premature bail flip and never a wind knot probably due to the line lay from the very slow oscillation. I matched the with a St Croix Mojo MSS110MHMF2 11' Surf Rod and am very please with the performance of this match-up. I tried a new line Piscifun Green Braid Fishing Line 30LB with it's 4 Strands of braid. The line worked well, be careful not to over fill the reel, as this will become an anger management issue. I fished mainly with a 2 hook bait rig with a 2-3 oz pyramid surf sinker. Not bad at all for a fishing setup. I'm sure with better casting technique it will achieve 150+yds. It is definitely an improvement over a standard spin design. Please mark this review helpful if it was.
Amazon Customer : Will buy more
Smooth Quality reel. I probably don't need the LL model but figured it was only a couple bucks more, why not. Reel is not heavy but has enough weight for you to know that it is metal and will stand the tests you put it up to. Plenty of grease inside, I didn't need to do anything, its ready to go. I spooled it with 20lb power pro braid 300 yards fit no problem. Using it on a Hurricane Calico Jack 7' Medium rod. Awesome combo, much better feel than the penn combo. I am satisfied with my purchase and would recommend to others. I will be getting a few more of these spinfishers like the 6500.
zander laurent : I dont have to worry about it getting wet
I just spent the week fishing with the Spinfisher V and I loved it. It was incredibly fun to fight fish with and has excellent drag capabilities. The bail stays open when you cast and it seems to be very salt water resistant.
I chose the V over the Vl because the V has such a great reputation. Im sure the Vl will also gain an incredible reputation, but I wanted to go with the tried and true.
I matched this reel with a st croix triumph travel surf casting rod 10ft. The reel sat well and lined up well. I was able to cast 50 yards with minimal effort.
The reel looks nice and feels very smooth when retrieving.
The only downside of this reel is its weight. It is by far the heaviest reel I own. That being said I was still able to fish all day (without a rod holder) and not get too tired.
In one weekend I caught a record size kelp bass, a good sized smooth hound shark, 4 small leopard sharks, and four medium sized shovelnose guitar fish.
David : Good looking and feeling reel but weights more than advertised
Good looking and feeling reel but weights more than advertised...
The truth : Just wash your rods down.
A lot of people don't realize that if you take one minute to wash your rods down with fresh water after using them in saltwater they will pretty much last forever. Unless you just have a cheap reel with weak gears that cannot bring the fish in. That's nowhere near the case of with the spinfisher. The weight of the 4500 is okay. Anything bigger you'll feel like you're lifting weights when you cast.
Tabitha Parker : Great Reel! Built like a tank
Great Reel! Built like a tank. This reel is my 5th one I own and keep adding to arsenal. The reel is made to keep all the dirt, sand and grime out. I fish for trophy Blue catfish and have not let me down!
Norman Hulse : beautiful
It keeps locking up , maybe its he salt water.
Tinkeringeek : Solid Feel
Beefy and has a solid feel to it. Made with high quality part, and has a good finish to the overall unit. I own 2 other models so this now has been added to my fishing gear as the 3rd one. I like the idea of sealed bearing since most of my fishing has been salt fishing from either piers or beaches. Couple this with a light rod really does the job of casting easy. Get it, you won't regret it.
Amazon Customer : Will buy more

Michael Kavis : Tried them all, this one rules
I live on the beach in Florida and fish all the time. I have had this rod for 2.5 years. It has been pulled out of the rod holder into the water twice, has taken a ton of sand and has caught a ton of fish. It is still as good as new. I just rinse with fresh water and oil the gears once a year. I have tried other brands to save money and none of them can withstand the abuse of surf fishing. This is my go to rod. Light enough to catch the little fish, strong enough to land the big snook . Highly recommend!
Khartoum : Very solid heavy duty reel the best reel ive ever owned
very solid heavy duty reel i got the 12lb-20lb reel 406 i think very nice set up paired with a rod/w line rating 12-15lb medium action ugly stick rod this rocks i was casting over about 150yds with a 2oz canonball sinker and over a hundred on a spinner and 1 1/4 oz egg weight one of the best money can buy
tom beck : Always good however
penn battles rock but over time the tiny parts in this reel give way. I went to the conflict- the black ones and they seem to better. Now I went full spin fishers and they are rock solid water tight fully sealed. if you are gonna kayak fish or get salty splash on your reel go for pen spin fisher. I fish hard and often and fresh water rinse after each use then I spray silicone or reel magic to remove water then wipe clean. if you buy nice stuff take care of it. my buddy has penns 30 years old still work perfect! hope this helps.
Kaylan : LL Feature fails and YOU PAY!
I bought this reel for by BF and we have been dealing with headaches ever since. 1. Within a month the LL (live line) feature failed on the reel. We took it to a PENN CERTIFIED service center Angler's Choice on 1910 Rosecrans Street. Called first no issues. Got there and all they are willing to do is charge me more money to send it to Penn. You all can keep your defective reel. DO NOT BUY!!!!!! READ REVIEWS AND BELIEVE PENNS FAILURE WILL COST YOU, YES YOU THE CONSUMER MORE!!!!
Jay Johnson : Best Saltwater Reel in the Market!
I have two of these Penn reels that I purchased over two years ago. I go out very often and have never had any problem with the reels. I have had no problems with the drag which is amazing and no rust. These are expensive but well worth it for all the time you spend offshore fishing for trophy kingfish!
Will Penn : Penn is best bang for the buck . Killer reel.
This reel is a beast . In its price range , I trust it every single bit as my reels that cost much more. Stripers , gator Blues or Benito and Yellowfin.... This reel puts fish in the boat .
Never one single issue.
Don't get caught up in fancy name and marketing BS..Penn gets it done !
Amazon Customer : Great buy
Great . Use in the laguna every weekend I can . Saltwater hasn't effected it yet. No problem handling to oversize reds
Middle Aged Man : Wow Wow Wow
Very smooth. Dual drags are super nice. Its the one on the right hand in photo. It does have some weight to it, but that is fine as I'm not slinging it a lot. I've only deployed for an hour so far. . . but can't wait to hook something nice with it.
Chris Singarella : looks nice, casts incredibly smooth
high quality, heavy, looks nice, casts incredibly smooth, im not a fishing pro just recreational and its been great for that use
Amoy C. : love Penn reels
Very smooth drag
MSDLNH : Smooth !!! Great bargain for a heavy duty reel.
We loved these reels so much I’ve bought 3 so far and plan on purchasing another. They’re smooth, easy to use, durable and worth every penny. Love the ll feature, great for when we’re fishing for Northern!
Norman Hulse : beautiful
It keeps locking up , maybe its he salt water.
MH : Amazing drag
First fish with this reel was a 45" Amberjack and he really fought hard. Thank goodness for good line and the quality drag on this reel. As always amazing Penn quality.
themrpark : super silky.
super silky. took it salt water fishing. even accidently got it in the saltwater. Sand all over it. But still works silky smooth. May open it up to see if it has any water damage inside. But since it still works silky, i bet it's still water tight.
April Portwood : Shark Hunter!!
Very strong reel and reliable and caught a 7 1/2 ft Nurse shark on it with ease!!
Amazon Customer : ... still made in the USA but it still a great product for heavy saltwater spin fishermen
I wish they were still made in the USA but it still a great product for heavy saltwater spin fishermen. Time will tell how the saltwater affects this spinning reel so far so good. The price point is very good considering what you can spend today for a quality saltwater reel.

Isleofdoggos : Thinking of buying another
Excellent reel. Great for surf casting off a 10 foot rod, would be good for offshore fishing for 10-30 pounders as well. Solid build, tight controls. Heavy but heavy duty

Ken W. : Penn 1259871 Spinfisher V Spinning Fishing Reel, 4500
Love the reel. Great for saltwater fishing. Have 2500, 3500 & 5500 Penn reels.
Jonathan Fletcher : Most expensive reel I own, and best
Costs a bit more, but quality is excellent, glad I make this purchase.
Scott Domonoske : Get it
Smooth drag. Amazing durability... Once taken apart it is easily cleaned and works like new again. Dropped one in salt water for 30 minutes before finding it. Took it apart and cleaned/oiled/greased it. Still works like new.

Fishing Logic : Finally, a sealed and durable long casting reel.
I've wanted a saltwater capable long caster for a while now and this product gives you just that. I've shied away from models such as the Shimano Ultegra because I wasn't sure how'd they hold up in the salt. Let me break it down for you.
Pros: Fully sealed, saltwater resistant. Just like any other Spinfisher this reel is resistant to splashing, sand, and the occasional dunking. This is important as I do a lot of jetty fishing where splashes from waves are commonplace.
Extremely smooth worm gear oscillation system. I've counted roughly 22 to 23 wraps of line from when the spool moves from top to bottom (Compare this to a Penn Battle II which only gives you about 6 or 7). This creates superb line lay which allows for phenomenal castability. Wind knots are a thing of the past.
Manual bail trip. Penn was smart to do this, no more breaking off $30 plugs.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, this reel has a lot of cranking power for a long caster. Bear in mind that most European long casters are designed for lighter freshwater applications such as carp or eel fishing. I have reeled down on 20lb blues and pulled up bass from ocean inlets without issue.
Cons: It's heavy. It can definitely wear on you if you plan on casting plugs all day. However, it is 7500 size so it sort of comes with the territory.
Recommendations: Be sure to pair this with at least an 11 foot medium heavy power rod to get the most from its performance. A 12 or 13 footer is even more ideal. Also, a fast action rod will get it out there even further.
Overall, this is well-crafted, extremely smooth reel that is a great bargain for its price.

c.j. stampfl : Great real for the fishing I do
Great real for the fishing I do. Its a little stiff on the retrieve. Probably needs a good lubrication with that Quantium hot sauce.
I have it filled with 14lb mono and use it on a 8' Shimano Temar rod. Amazon had the best price around.

Strong, smooth, solid! super five stars. My first choice of reel for saltwater fishing.

fernando a. : good reel
Really good reel, so far have caught cal yellows, bonitos, barracudas, sheephead, calicos, and lots of rock fish. Reel is bit big and heavy but you get used to it, and so far no issues took it with me on trips all this season.
Gregg R. Goldstein : Second Penn Spinfisher reel
