Product reviews of Shakespeare Mach 2 XT Front Drag
Walleroonie : Great wee reel.
At this price I just couldn't complain (70% off), the reel is nice and compact with a choice of handles.
Nicely finished and it comes with a spare spool. The action is very smooth and ideal for what I need it for.
Very impressed.
Anonyfinn : Hefty but good
This reel handles surprisingly differently to the 035 reel in the same series and also the 040, as by comparison it's quite a monster. It's 556 g (nearly one and a quarter pounds), 16 cm from butt to spool top, and 11 cm across the bail arm. The double handle is 13 cm across. It's smooth enough, but you can feel a little inertia when winding, and if you look for it a little wobble from the eccentric weighting of the bail arm as it rotates.
Don't get me wrong, it's not unusual or entirely unexpected for a reel this size, but if you were looking for an all-rounder it may be an idea to go for the 040. That's because for my own purposes I regard this reel as a medium to heavy lure-fishing piece of equipment due to its size and the amount of line required to load it, and also because it comes with one spare spool rather than two like other reels in the series. The main spool is rated for 200 m of 0.30 mm line, the spare for 150 m of 0.25 mm line. That is to say, that the 040 with two spare spools could be used for light match, ordinary float, and ledger/light-medium lure fishing if you wanted to buy only one reel that would cover several tasks, and not be unnecessarily cumbersome. Some, of course, may wish to fish the bottom at distance with this reel and like to have a lot of line onboard for really big carp.
I have this one lined on two spools to cover light and medium-heavy lure fishing, a lighter line of 8lb good for spinning little predators like perch and game fish to give range and not interfere with lure action, given that I wouldn't be using a trace. And I'm certain I'll be using it alongside my multiplier reels when trolling. It is smooth (would be with 7 bearings), the line lay seems good, and the bail arm sets and snaps back easily, deceptively so for the size! So yes, a great reel for the more robust fishing needs, and currently at a truly excellent price.
Apologies for banging on -- since I also own the next two sizes down in this mid-price, good price-performance range for pragmatists, I thought I'd offer something on comparison and matching reels to needs. The current bargain price should really give this one five stars, so if you get it for three tens and a five or less it's a five, sixty plus and a very good four.
UPDATE: I've just ordered another, because I've lost the one I had. Occasionally I've been sloppy and let slack line tangle, but usually it wraps around the back of the rotating part and is easily undone. Anyway, experience tells me another is worth a go -- nice and smooth and good retreive rate, pleasant to use. How did I lose it? Trolling. My other rods stuck out sideways to the boat, but one was inline. Nothing great caught so why not give it some revs on a wavy day on the way back: shook loose, whole rod went overboard and sank like a stone. It'll take a lot more cork on the handle to float this one.
oldboy john : Great reel
I thought this reel was a bargain at £30 having seen it advertised for much more.
It feels well made with a nice smooth movement. Definitely a satisfied customer.
The Nicholson’s : Superb
Value for money
James : Good value
Does as advertised
