Answer: Surprisingly, many years ago, surf fisherman cast with this type of reel. Though not the best, by adjusting a very slight amount of drag, proper "lay down" of the line on the spool, you could, but I solely use spinning tackle for this type of fishing.

what line capacity can it hold? will it be able to handle lepoard shark and huge rays

Answer: Penn 113 is designed for 30 lb. test mono but will hold maybe 600 yds + of 80 lb. braid. I used 40 lb. mono about 350 yds. It would be more than adequate for any but biggest sharks (over 100 lbs.).
