Answer: I have used filet knives for deboning pork shoulders and trimming fat from briskets, but this isn't a boning knife. Victorinox makes boning knives, as do other manufacturers.. I would suggest you get a 6 inch flexible blade boning knife for this.. just type in the Amazon search box for Boning Knives.. you should get a buttload of hits.

Answer: Fillet knives are ideal for fish because the thinness and shape of the blade allows for better maneuverability for removing skin. Boning knives have a thinner blade than most other kitchen knives but they typically aren't as thin as fillet knife blades, and are not necessarily flexible. This reply is found on Google.com.

Answer: I personally like 6 inches to 8 for fish shorter than 3 feet. 10 or more might be good for fish like a tuna or marlin.

Answer: Main thing is to get a good sharpener, since as sharp knife has a precise angle in the blade I recommend a sharpener not a stone! too hard to control at least for beginners. So get a sharpener that has a" V" looking groove which you run over the blade, the "V" may be made of ceramic or hardened tungsten carbide. Great Knife!

Answer: Norm, on the one I have the blade is 6" long; it is 3/4" high at the base and 1/2" high half-way down the blade. It is very flexible. Rapala might make different models of this knife.

Answer: Mine is 10 3/4" overall, 6 1/16" blade length, model # FNFSF6. Note there are 3 models with 4", 6" and 7 1/2" blades. Te last number in the model number is blade length.

Answer: Enough but not overly. I haven't had it long enough to have any complaints either way . I've only cleaned 2 nice channels and 1 nice striper with it and to be fair I had my shorty stiff knife with me on both of those. I bought this 7 1/2" for filleting the skin off of filets and pushing threw longer fish and for that if kept sharp it works fine.

Coating vs non-coated for panfish/walleye? & what size blade is good 6"?

Answer: The coating makes a marginal improvement, mainly when skinning. It’s not a big difference. The 6" blade is great for panfish and should be fine for most walleye. If you catch a lot of bigger walleye then go with the 7-1/2 inch blade.

Answer: I use a 4” and 6” blade. I LOVE this coated 6” blade A LOT. It’s not as fast as using an electric knife, but close. It’s SUPeR sharp.

Great knife. A great fish fillet knife but I use it often to trim meat or to de-bone. If used just for work on meat, not hacking thru cartilage, certainly never on a vegetable, it may never need sharpening. Not just for fisherman. Every kitchen should have one.

I have been a fan of Rapala ever since my father introduced them to me, he also swears by their knives. My father has been using the same Rapala 4inch fillet knife for 30 years or so (its been used and sharpened so much that there is probably a little less that 1/2 a centimeter shaved off from use/sharpening). I bought this for him for Christmas cause it was time for a new one. He has yet to use it, but I'm confident it will work like a champ.

These Rapala knives are very durable and good for not just filleting fish. We butcher our own deer and a Rapala is all we use. Great for getting between the muscles and bones, etc.

My knife, which says made in Estonia, is so dull, right out of the packaging, I can drag my thumb down the blade, pressing downward against the blade, without cutting my thumb. I think this knife must have skipped the sharpening except that the teflon coating was slightly removed near the "cutting" edge. They did something to it but sharpen it wasn't one of the things they did. Shame because I really like the look of it and the flexibility of the blade. If it had come with a sharpener I would sharpen it and try it but as it is I'm just going to return it.

Great knife, I have cleaned thousands of fish with Rapala fillet knifes.We use them while camping and cooking also. when they are wore out I give it to my wife and we use it in the kitchen. I ordered this as a secondary to the knife that my dad passed down to me. I was looking for one much more flexible than the fairly rigid one I have. My neighbor has a Rapala filet knife, similar to this one, and he raves about it. I haven’t used it yet, however after slicing right through a sheet of paper and being able to bend it about 45° on the counter, I’m convinced it’ll live up to its “super flex” name.

I have had a Normark knife for 30 years and it was time to replace. The blade was finally not holding an edge and the handle had seen better days, but that knife has probably cleaned up thousands of fish. This new knife is a perfect replacement. The handle feels great and grips well, the blade is very sharp and flexible. One key is the teflon coating on the knife which helps move is along. Will fit right in.

The brass ring that holds blade in broke after one use. I am so disappointed in poor quality of this item. I really thought rapala was a good brand. I chose this over other items that looked better and were cheaper because of the name brand.

great for cleaning small fish like perch and bluegills except it isn't good at removing scales as blade too thin and flexible. But VERY sharp, and takes head and fins off easily. The leather case, however, is totally worthless. The knife does not fit well in the case, and falls out easily when worn on my belt. I lost my knife twice before refusing to use the case further. Knife a bit on expensive side for its size.

When I received this knife it was dull. I had it professionally sharpened and went on my trip. It was a HUGE let down it would not cut anything on my walleye resulting in filleting my fish. I would not buy this from Amazon si ce you can not return after 30 days. I bought prior to my trip and the window closed. Had I bought it at Walmart I would have had 90 days to return once I discovered it was not a good knife.

This knife is nice looking, comes with a leather sheath and is easily packable in the 4” size. My biggest complaint is that I cannot get it sharp enough (or keep it sharp enough) to easily clean a stringer of fish. A couple fish at a time? Sure. Many at a time? Not quite. I also would not recommend it for a camp knife that gets used for lots of different purposes. Rapala makes a similar 4” model with a stainless blade and black handle that works quite a bit better. Ive been using these small knife types for years and prefer the Rapala stainless model over all.
