Answer: I have used filet knives for deboning pork shoulders and trimming fat from briskets, but this isn't a boning knife. Victorinox makes boning knives, as do other manufacturers.. I would suggest you get a 6 inch flexible blade boning knife for this.. just type in the Amazon search box for Boning Knives.. you should get a buttload of hits.
Answer: Fillet knives are ideal for fish because the thinness and shape of the blade allows for better maneuverability for removing skin. Boning knives have a thinner blade than most other kitchen knives but they typically aren't as thin as fillet knife blades, and are not necessarily flexible. This reply is found on Google.com.

Answer: Main thing is to get a good sharpener, since as sharp knife has a precise angle in the blade I recommend a sharpener not a stone! too hard to control at least for beginners. So get a sharpener that has a" V" looking groove which you run over the blade, the "V" may be made of ceramic or hardened tungsten carbide. Great Knife!

Answer: Norm, on the one I have the blade is 6" long; it is 3/4" high at the base and 1/2" high half-way down the blade. It is very flexible. Rapala might make different models of this knife.

Answer: Enough but not overly. I haven't had it long enough to have any complaints either way . I've only cleaned 2 nice channels and 1 nice striper with it and to be fair I had my shorty stiff knife with me on both of those. I bought this 7 1/2" for filleting the skin off of filets and pushing threw longer fish and for that if kept sharp it works fine.

Answer: The coating makes a marginal improvement, mainly when skinning. It’s not a big difference. The 6" blade is great for panfish and should be fine for most walleye. If you catch a lot of bigger walleye then go with the 7-1/2 inch blade.
Answer: I use a 4” and 6” blade. I LOVE this coated 6” blade A LOT. It’s not as fast as using an electric knife, but close. It’s SUPeR sharp.

I have had a Normark knife for 30 years and it was time to replace. The blade was finally not holding an edge and the handle had seen better days, but that knife has probably cleaned up thousands of fish. This new knife is a perfect replacement. The handle feels great and grips well, the blade is very sharp and flexible. One key is the teflon coating on the knife which helps move is along. Will fit right in.

Good knife for the price. The knifes blade came a little off center, it wasn't bent but off center from the handle. Marttiini knife company uses a robot arm to grind the primary bevel on these after the handle is put on the knife. the off center blade led to one side of the blade being ground steeper than the other. They then coat these blades post grinding and as a final step an employee grinds a secondary bevel to remove coating on apex of edge. my secondary bevel was ground so steep that I could barely see it. It was almost as small as a microlevel and was not sharp enough house for anything let alone filleting fish. The uneven primary bevel grind is a HUGE issue when cutting as it will lead to the knife pulling towards the shallower edge and make it difficult to get straight cuts when filleting a fish and lead to meat left on the fish carcass or the knife hitting the spine of the fish depending on which way you are using the knife. I reground the entire primary bevel to make both sides even and made the primary bevel shallower than factory and removed the secondary bevel. The steel took a nice toothy 600 grit edge and cuts well now especially with the less steep primary bevel. I would not recommend purchasing this knife unless you have a belt grinder and a decent amount of knowledge and practice re beveling knives or a whetstone and a lot of time on your hands. The sheath is pretty nice and the knife fits into it very tightly. The knife looks like it would cost a lot more than 25 dollars. Overall if you plan on giving this knife the final touches that it should have received at the factory it's a pretty great knife.

I bought this 4" knife for filleting northern pike and getting the y bones out of the fillet. First time I used it I could not believe how sharp and quick it was for making fillets. Great little knife.

Blade shape is perfect for preparing fish, but it is not strong. Needs sharpening after cutting a few fish bones. You may use two knives, this one for filleting and another for bones, but it defeats the purpose.
Bolster is made from a different material and there are gaps and a small void inside. All sort of things accumulate in those gaps and it is difficult to clean.
It has worked well for over 30 days of fishing with daily use, but I am definitely looking for a replacement. Not unhappy with the knife considering the price, but would not recommend it.

I've been filleting fish for 40 years--ever since my little brother (who is better at everything than I am but never brags about it) declared that he was not cleaning one more of my fish! He was the one that taught me how to fillet a fish, and he used a Rapala fillet knife. I've occasionally tried other brands, but 40 years later I'm still using Rapala. And with good reason--I got more than 10 years out of my last knife (which I still use around the kitchen), and thought I'd upgrade a little with its replacement. The PTFE non-stick coating on the blade does indeed help this knife remove the fillet from the skin more smoothly. I didn't notice a major difference on the other cuts--just the super sharp and supple performance I've come to expect from a Rapala. Expect an update on Rapala's latest offerings in another 10 years!
On a side note, this product makes a really great sidekick for the Rapala fillet knife. While you can tell I'm a big Rapala fan, this one does a better job than the little Rapala sharpeners.

This knife has worked great so far for filleting and skinning fresh-caught ocean fish. It's a bit harder to work with on some of the larger fish (as, of course, there's less ability to flex around the larger bones), but it's still long enough to get the job done. And for smaller fish, it's great and sensitive enough for filleting very closely. I do think it's getting duller and I'm skeptical about how to sharpen it. I've tried to sharpen it with standard knife sharpeners I use for all my kitchen knives and I'm not sure if it's really gotten sharper or not. With the non-stick surface (which seems like it's probably been helpful), I'm just not sure if I'm getting at the actual blade or not when I try to sharpen it. Anyway, still holding up well though!

I’ve used Rapala Filet Knives for many years, and always come back to them. This one arrived very dull. Sharpening a flexible filet knife on a whetstone isn’t too easy, but once the edge was razor sharp it’s easy to maintain. The manufacturer should at least send the knife with a good edge.

great for cleaning small fish like perch and bluegills except it isn't good at removing scales as blade too thin and flexible. But VERY sharp, and takes head and fins off easily. The leather case, however, is totally worthless. The knife does not fit well in the case, and falls out easily when worn on my belt. I lost my knife twice before refusing to use the case further. Knife a bit on expensive side for its size.

Great knife. A great fish fillet knife but I use it often to trim meat or to de-bone. If used just for work on meat, not hacking thru cartilage, certainly never on a vegetable, it may never need sharpening. Not just for fisherman. Every kitchen should have one.

I ordered this as a secondary to the knife that my dad passed down to me. I was looking for one much more flexible than the fairly rigid one I have. My neighbor has a Rapala filet knife, similar to this one, and he raves about it. I haven’t used it yet, however after slicing right through a sheet of paper and being able to bend it about 45° on the counter, I’m convinced it’ll live up to its “super flex” name.

While this is a good knife, I wish that it had a better edge to it when I bought it. I couldn't decide between the Rapala or the Bubba blade. I choose this one because the ratings were higher. The uneven primary bevel grind is a HUGE issue when cutting as it will lead to the knife pulling towards the shallower edge and make it difficult to get straight cuts when filleting a fish and lead to meat left on the fish carcass or the knife hitting the spine of the fish depending on which way you are using the knife. I reground the entire primary bevel to make both sides even and made the primary bevel shallower than factory and removed the secondary bevel. The steel took a nice toothy 600 grit edge and cuts well now especially with the less steep primary bevel. I would not recommend purchasing this knife unless you have a belt grinder and a decent amount of knowledge and practice re beveling knives or a whetstone and a lot of time on your hands. The sheath is pretty nice and the knife fits into it very tightly. The knife looks like it would cost a lot more than 25 dollars. Overall if you plan on giving this knife the final touches that it should have received at the factory it's a pretty great knife.
Mike : Nimble fillet knife-good blade
One of the better fillet knives I've owned over the years. I use it for smaller pan fish and others that have pin bones that are tough to remove from the fillet. The blade has excellent flex to it and holds an edge well. Interested to see how the wooden handle holds up over time, as it is only stained and not sealed or polyurethened. Good knife.

This is a fantastic scaling knife. Very durable, good design, and it holds an edge well. The blade does has some flex to it but it's because it's so long.

Knife is beautiful, but the blade is so dull I couldn't even cut a piece of paper. The knife is so nice that I just was going to keep it, but it is a bummer that I had to sharpen it.

Bought this for my father in law. When he finally went to use it (was saving it for special fishing trip) it was so dull we could barely use it. Thought it would be of higher quality considering the reviews and that it is from Rapala.

Got my knife today and used it on a few trout I caught this morning. Absolutely perfect size for cleaning trout and panfish. A few reviews said knife came dull, must have been a bad lot. This one came very sharp out of the box. Why have I been buying expensive fillet knives for small fish till now!

great for cleaning small fish like perch and bluegills except it isn't good at removing scales as blade too thin and flexible. But VERY sharp, and takes head and fins off easily. The leather case, however, is totally worthless. The knife does not fit well in the case, and falls out easily when worn on my belt. I lost my knife twice before refusing to use the case further. Knife a bit on expensive side for its size.
