Answer: Depending on what "small" is to you. It will fit on a standard bass fishing bait caster, but I recommend using on a heavier rod.

Answer: I think it's perfect for a light to medium action rod. I have mine on a 6' ugly stick that I plan to use on redfish.

Reel failed on first fish. 6lb channel cat. Was able to land fish but it was making some aweful noises and afterward would not free spool to cast. It was cheep. It looked cool. If i were you skip this one unless you just want to look at it.

I love this reel I have the 9m 209 and 309 amazing reels I have been using the regularly in the Susquehanna river they have turned into my go to reels

Martinfishdr : My most-used Penn Reel

In 1986 I bought a USA-made Penn Mag 10 (no longer available) which is a Penn 9 with a nonadjustable magnetic spool brake to aid in casting. I used it on Southern California partyboats for light tackle bottom fishing and swimming out live baits. I still have this reel and it's my favorite reel for salmon trolling using downriggers. It is small, light and holds just enough 20 lb test line to pull in the average-sized hatchery chinook. The maximum drag is somewhat light at 10 lbs. This allows a big fish to pull lots of line out, scary but sporting. That is what kept the reel from getting a 5 star. On the other side of the boat I use a Penn 209, which drags the salmon in with authority.

I bought this Penn 9M to put on a new rod I bought to replace an older rod that was stolen. That rod had an older Penn No. 9 on it. I caught some nice salmon on that setup, some in fresh water but mostly in salt water. Even with very little maintenance, that reel held up very well. This reel is brand new, but still almost identical.

Penn General Purpose Reels will always be my favorite reels for trolling for salmon. I have a couple of newer reels and several that are 20-30 years old. It can be tough to tell the difference between the older reels and the newer reels because the design really has not changes over the years. And it for a good reason. These reels are simply the best, most durable reel you can buy.

If you want a reel that will last forever, buy Penn General Purpose.

I've been using the Penn reels for overr 40 years. Most of my fishing is spent trolling the northern lakes of Minnesota for Nothern, Muskie, and Walleye. The Penn #9 is the perfect fit on my 6' hmedium and heavy action rods.

I used to have one when I was younger and was very easy to learn to cast!! So my wife has never used one before and i bought this one for her to use we put 50lb Cajun line on it and a 6 foot rod medium heavy.. She is going to start to Practice with it soon!! Penn Reels are very reliable and easy to use I own 4 Penn 309's We fish for Shovel heads in the Ohio river!! Will be recommend to other friends!

These decades old reels won't die.I've used these reels for years,and have found them to be very reliable.Please note that the Penn general purpose reels are conventional trolling designs,NOT casting reels,you will need an educated thumb to cast them.My brother caught over 100 sturgeon in the Columbia River out of Astoria Oregon using one of my 9m models,and I have also caught Rogue River king salmon with these rock solid reels.Mine are USA made,with both aluminum spools and chrome plated spools.Bakelite side plates,stainless pinion/brass drive gears have proven to be bulletproof.I've examined the Chinese models ,and can see no difference in quality.Proper maintenance and decades of use can be expected.(This review from my husband)
