I have been wanting to do some smallie fishing and hear dworshak reservoir in idaho is really good. infact i just watched a video on youtube saying that they caught 40 bass, all smallies, and they were all over 4 lbs. They estimate that within the next 4 year, the world record smallie will be caught from there. if anyone has reports or info about dworshak reservoir smallie fishing, PLEASE notify me.

The next World Record is not coming from Idaho.
Before anyone claims the "potential" for a new
record, you first need a few fish coming in at
10 lbs+. The current State Record is 9-11.5:

Not only that, but anyone who tells you they caught 40 smallmouth and they were all over 4 pounds is probably related to pinnochio.
I watched the videos on Youtube. There are many nice smallmouth in them, but some are 1 to 3 pounds in addition to a few larger ones. If you go, I would expect to catch smallmouth of all sizes, not just hawgs.

I must be a relative of Pinnochio. My brother in law and myself caught over 60 smallies each about three years ago on Erie. 40 or more each bested 4lbs with many over 5 and a couple 6s . It wasn't in a tourney just an entire sun up to sundown fishing trip.

Two key distinctions. You are talking about lake erie, and not every fish you caught was over 4 pounds. Take a look at the guides website and there are fish of all sizes displayed.

I was just there, it is a very long reservoir over 50mi in length but it fishes fairly small. I have my doubts of every fish caught being over 4lbs even during the prime time. I had some success up there catching 2 fish over 5Lbs and 8 over 3Lbs. I figured out a couple main points- a lot of guys in my club had a hard time figuring the place out- you can waste a lot of time where there simply are no fish. My advice is to locate some points mid reservoir start deep fish progressively shallow til you are on fish. Early morning they are up shallow til the sun comes up well at least thats how it was the last weekend in August. The main forage is kokanee which are beginning to turn red and of course crawdads. There are some monsters in there- the elevation is only 1600ft the growing season for those fish and habitat/forage is pretty optimal- Smallmouth have not been in that lake for very long heck the resevoir was not buitl until 1973- the smallmouth were introduced much later and the fishing only became popular with in the last 10yrs. The guy that caught the last 2 state records Dan Stiegers swears there is at least a 10lber in there- Its all fish stories and I am not saying the World Record will come out of there but it is fun to think about- As far as baits and exact locations, Id be lying if I told you on here. :-X

Agree with RW. I do think that another state record is definetly possible to be caught there but I also wouldn't rule out Lake Pend Oreille up north. I have caught many 5-6 lb smallies and a 8lb large this year. Lake Pend Oreille has a surface area of 148 square miles and the river flows approx 20 miles till the dam. There is also the Clark Fork that feeds the Lake which also has great potential. Pend Oreille is a sleeping giant and it is only a matter of time before something huge is pulled out. I say this because on a weekly basis I can go out and catch 6+ lbers and I hope the next big one is me

Man, consistantly catching 6 lb smallmouth is a feat in itself...

I wish we had those kind of numbers around here. The potential
for a monster is always there, but big fish are still pretty rare and
the few times we have been "on 'em" are days I will never forget!

I don't want to toot my own horn because I definetly don't catch these fish as consistely as it may have sounded in the post. I have only caught (6) 5-6lb smallies this year. The rest average 2-4 lbs. I does seem that when I do go out, we or I, depending who I am with, catch a good amount of fish with atleast a 3-5lber in there.
I fish from kayak and shore so deep water is primarily out of the question because the wind and waves we get up here would make it almost impossible to be fishing deep water and have fun, and that is why I fish. Also the time it would take to get to the places I usually fish the deep water for smallies would take 2-3 hours of paddling and that is no fun for me.
Thats why I primarily fish for largies because the back water is pretty easy from kayak. If anything is interested in kayak fishing they should check out Freedom Hawk Kayaks. The back end of the boat swivels out and you can stand up in it. It is my new savior to getting around the backwater.
I do agree with you about the days that you get into some "Heaven Like" days... they will always be remebered in my mind also

Right on good work from a Kyak for sure kudos to ya- my money is still on dworsahk for the next state record- the weekend I was there a 6.5 was caught and a 7 the weekend before. It is under fished and that tells me there is a good population of big dawgs in there- there is a ton of kokanee in that lake, those monsters got plenty of fuel up there. Anyway It would not suprise me if a beast came out of Pend Oreille- you guys get bigger bass up north for sure the Largemouth record is even from up north.

Sounds to me like I need to go on a roadtrip. Lake Walcott has some great fish in it too, and it too is in the running for pulling out the next state record smallie.

Walcot is the best for us southern Idaho dudes great smallies in there- Dworshak is very scenic a great place to fish- well worth a trip, PM me if you go I will point you in the right direction

Thanks, maybe in the spring I will had that way for a trip. Getting into hunting season now, and Walcott will close to boating at the end of the month, and the river will be lowered too much to get my boat on it soon. :'( But I will have to enjoy the hunting with my GSP.

Dworshak is great smallie fishing. I would use hula grubs and tubes fished fairly deep over any rocky structure.
As for 40 fish with all of them over 4 pounds, that might be possible only on Lake Erie or MAYBE Lake St. Clair. I've had days on Colorado's Yampa River where I caught 40 or more smallies that were 2 - 4.5 pounds though, and the Yampa is one of the west's best.

Champlain as well, you can find cookie cutters that all go in the low fours. If you find one that size up there, there are usually tons more in that area if you are in open water. They redefine the term bunch up, you can be bringing a 4 pound smallie to the boat and have 5-10 coming with it.
There are also some 1,000-5,000 acre lakes that you guys never hear of that can kick out fish like that in those numbers in New England.

I know that you won a recent tourney on Champlain with three smallies for 12.74 pounds, that is a great limit and I offer my sincere congrats. If I recall correctly, second place on the co-angler side was 10.44 pounds, just about a 3.5 pound average. I guess what I am trying to say is that three pound smallmouth are far more common than 4 pounders, even on a great fishery like Champlain.
Too many guys assume a quality smallmouth will weigh 4 pounds, usually when they meet a scale they weigh less. I have fished quality smallmouth fisheries all over New England including Maine and Vermont, and have caught my share of quality smallmouth with a personal best of 6-4 and 14 others of 5-0 or more. That being said, I know from experience that 4 pound smallmouth are not as common as many reports would seem to indicate. Smallmouth that weigh between three and four pounds are still darn good fish, and I can see how an unweighed 3 1/2 or 3 3/4 pound smallie gets reported as a "4". I've had smallies that I thought would go 5 pounds actually weigh 4 1/4. It takes a whole lot of smallmouth to weigh 4 pounds, let alone 5.
By the way, I have spoken with the guide who is featured on the videos. He confirmed that the size range is from 2 pounds on up to 6 or 7 pounds. His statement alone is far more true and realistic than the 40 over 4 pounds statement. No doubt Dworshak is a great fishery, but even the videos show a range of sizes.

I fished with Jeff Jarret, of Orofino, ID, in May. We had a slow day, only put five fish in the boat, but every one was weighed on an accurate scale (boga). One was 3.5 lbs. The rest were 4-5.5. Jeff is the only guide doing bass on Dworshak, right now. There was a tournament going on that weekend. We didn't enter, but if we had, we would have doubled the winning weight that day, plus won the largest fish award, too. Would have paid about $1250, if I remember right. ;D

We fished it in September winning weight was 22LBS in 5 fish- each day I fished it I caught a 5LB'er. Not very many locals fish that place for bass I love it up there.

A good friend who I worked under in Wyoming is now doing research on Dworshak, and Lake Pend Oreille. I saw him last week while traveling through Spokane for work. He mentioned great smallie fishing, but nothing about future state record size fish. He would have mentioned that if he thought they were there just to rub it in my face that I moved back east and took a non-fish related job. Both sound like amazing fisheries though, you are lucky to be able to fish them.
