Answer: The outside of the unit is about 28", so the racks are about 24". Plenty wide for a full rack of ribs and deep enough for 3 racks (flat), maybe 4.

Answer: I wouldn’t use it for grilling since there’s no direct flame. Baking... in a smoker... it can operate at 350 degrees but that’s based on a wood fire. I would imagine some of that wood smoke flavor would be absorbed by whatever you were baking so I would not think of using it that way. It’s primary function is to smoke meats, I would stick with that. Mine sits right next to my grill so if I want to Have a Smokey flavor to my steaks, I can easily move between the two. I’ve even smoked a scallop or two...

Can you cold smoke with this smoker?
Answer: Depends on what you mean by "cold". We have cold smokers (from Louisiana grills, and from masterbuilt) that we use for cheese, nuts, fish, etc. They keep the smoking chamber at just a few degrees above ambient temp. This smoker won't do that. You can smoke low (150 degrees) with it, but that will melt cheese, cook fish, etc.
Answer: Yes, it has a smoke setting where it only makes enough heat to make smoke. If you want it real low, just keep the door cracked. It will spike on you at times, due too fire. Lowest constant setting is 150.

I purchased this based upon my experience with my Pit Boss pellet grill which has performed flawlessly for the past year and is used at least 4 times a week year round. I purchased this smoker and was extremely impressed.... at first. It worked great. It had good temperature, generated great smoke and produced an awesome smoked meat equivalent to a professional smoker. Then it stopped.... only after about 5 or 6 smokes, I started having issues. I keep getting an error message (ErL), and the smoker would shut off during the cook. There was no way to re-start the smoker, and this cost me some quality meat and a lot of embarrassment..
I searched for a fix, and found no resolution that would solve the issue.
I attempted tr ed to contact PitBoss, but wa greeted with a phone tree. I tried to start an online chat to resolve the issue, but have not heard back from anyone in over a week. It is impossible to reach anyone in thier service department and I cant even get this device to turn on at this point.
I was so happy with this smoker, but it was short lived. And turned out to be a turd!

The Pit Boss customer service gave us about half a dozen "must-do's" in order for the smoker to work correctly Example: Leave door open and let it warm up for 10 minutes on 200 degrees. Make sure that the pellet hopper is 3/4 full when smoking to avoid air gaps. The chimney cap needs to have 2 inch gap from top of stack to bottom of gold cap. They do not have service techs to help reinstall all the replacement parts, so that is on you. My Husband did finally get the smoker to work by trial and error but how anyone else would know to do all these little 'must-do's' is beyond me. I still won't buy this product again.
We have yet to actually smoke an entire meal before having an issue with the smoker. It continually gives error codes resulting in the smoker completely shutting off. We have found that it smokes for about an hour and then will turn off. We trouble-shoot the errors our self, via their manual but that isn't helping. We've just submitted a case via the Pit Boss website to trouble shoot. We'll see how easy (or hard) it is to get this resolved.

LOVE the smoker! There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to operating it (I tripped one of my outlets by not starting it up correctly) but if you actually follow the instructions you’ll be fine. I’ve used it at least 10 times at this point and my only complaint is the temperature does fluctuate sometimes at least 50 degrees but I generally smoke low and slow and that’s not a huge deal. Other than that there’s a cheap covering over the control panel that is starting to come off (after 3 months) I tried going on their website to complain about it and making a complaint online is not super easy it seems like you have to call. But in terms of some of the reviews I’ve seen about having issues with it feeding pellets I have had no issue but I follow the directions and clean it after use and don’t overfill the water pan

Delivered yesterday I got box and top had been retaped didn't really think anything but after I got out of the box noticed big dent on the corner and some scratches on top of same corner. Appears the unit was dropped. The assembly of it was very easy. Started the break in an run it for about an hour an work great but very unhappy about the corn being dented and scratches.

Absolute junk. Good concept, great looking, terrible function. I bought one it worked for 1.5 smoke and started giving erl codes. I worked with customer service and all they would do is send parts, that didn’t fix the issue. Not pleased at all with pit boss.
Amazon Customer : Major design and quality issues
When it works, it is great and produces really good results... the problem is "when" is not often enough.
1.) The design is so bad and / or quality so poor that humidity/water will get into to hopper. The saw dust from the pellets will collect at the bottom of the hopper and gum up, which will lead to no more pellets feeding. Stupidly enough, there is no way to get to the auger to clean that up besides completely emptying the hopper, disassembling (unscrewing!!) the hopper assembly and then remove the junk, re-assemble everything and refill the hopper. Not sure who "designed" this mess, but he/she/that team should get fired on the spot.
2.) In the middle of a 12 hr. smoke, the electronic decided to throw an error and stopped heating. Had to finish in the oven, call their "support" which answered the phone after only 20 minutes in the wait queue and a replacement part (temp. probe) was sent for me to install.

With all these quality and design issues, I do not recommend this smoker. While it is sturdy and heavy, I need a smoker that I can rely on and that does not require me to plan for constant repairs.
I got the smoker brand new 3 weeks ago and the problems above all developed during that time.
(oh, and yes, there was a cover on all the time when not smoking to prevent water from getting into the hopper....)
Update: Was trying to use it the 4th time after the temperature probe was replaced by me (they only send you the parts, you do the labor part...). Temperature went over 400, shut down with ERH. Restarted the whole POS, same problem again and again and again. Summer sausage is burned at the bottom and will need to be thrown away.
Wish I had never set my hand on this zero quality POS product.
Crystal Cole : Awesome smoker easy to use.
Got mine at Walmart for $200. The manager said someone returned it after using it once and said something was wrong with it. Took it home and tried to use it. Wouldnt work. Called tech support 3 days later replacement part arrived. It was the temperature sensor. 20 minutes of work to replace it. So far have smoked chicken breasts and now doing ribs.

When it works, it is great and produces really good results... the problem is "when" is not often enough.
1.) The design is so bad and / or quality so poor that humidity/water will get into to hopper. The saw dust from the pellets will collect at the bottom of the hopper and gum up, which will lead to no more pellets feeding. Stupidly enough, there is no way to get to the auger to clean that up besides completely emptying the hopper, disassembling (unscrewing!!) the hopper assembly and then remove the junk, re-assemble everything and refill the hopper. Not sure who "designed" this mess, but he/she/that team should get fired on the spot.
2.) In the middle of a 12 hr. smoke, the electronic decided to throw an error and stopped heating. Had to finish in the oven, call their "support" which answered the phone after only 20 minutes in the wait queue and a replacement part (temp. probe) was sent for me to install.
