Answer: The outside of the unit is about 28", so the racks are about 24". Plenty wide for a full rack of ribs and deep enough for 3 racks (flat), maybe 4.

Answer: I wouldn’t use it for grilling since there’s no direct flame. Baking... in a smoker... it can operate at 350 degrees but that’s based on a wood fire. I would imagine some of that wood smoke flavor would be absorbed by whatever you were baking so I would not think of using it that way. It’s primary function is to smoke meats, I would stick with that. Mine sits right next to my grill so if I want to Have a Smokey flavor to my steaks, I can easily move between the two. I’ve even smoked a scallop or two...

I have used mine in the rain. then after sitting for about a month it clogged i opened the access door stuck a rod in it and it was back up and running. Be aware when you open the access door all of the wood pellets in the hopper will drain out.

Can you cold smoke with this smoker?
Answer: Depends on what you mean by "cold". We have cold smokers (from Louisiana grills, and from masterbuilt) that we use for cheese, nuts, fish, etc. They keep the smoking chamber at just a few degrees above ambient temp. This smoker won't do that. You can smoke low (150 degrees) with it, but that will melt cheese, cook fish, etc.
Answer: Yes, it has a smoke setting where it only makes enough heat to make smoke. If you want it real low, just keep the door cracked. It will spike on you at times, due too fire. Lowest constant setting is 150.

Answer: The pit boss copperhead does have some issues with the controller. I replaced my controller with a Rec Tec non-WiFi controller and never had an issue since. I love the Copperhead now since it’s trouble free. Overall it’s a great cooker but the factory controller sucks.

Works great but the quality of pellets makes a big difference. The first 30 min. was Kingsford hickory, major swings. Second 30 was treager hickory, with half sized swings. You get what you pay for.

Marian Hollenberger : Great for an expert but not a novice
Previous owned an electric smoker. Big selling point was the total cooking area of 1657. Previous smoker only had 577. This smoker was not much larger inside than previous one, only had two more racks to put food on. Had problem with pellets feeding into burner, the side slopes of the pellet hopper are not steep enough to allow all the pellets to slide down onto burner. This smoker is a lot more labor intensive, keeping pellet hopper filled, the startup procedure, the turn off procedure, and keeping the water pan filled. My old electric smoker just filled up the water pan, set temperature, set time and walk away. The first meat I smoked was 2 pork shoulders and took almost 9 hours, but was the best pork I had smoked. Had one problem during smoking the pork, didn't realize the water had evaporated and droppings in the water pan caught fire. Turned off smoker and fire went out. Realized that have to check the water pan frequently and insure there is water present. I would recommend this smoker only to die hard meat smokers since it did do a great job of smoking the pork. For novice meat smokers I recommend an electric smoker,

I've been using this smoker for a while now and it does a incredible job. Lots of smoke flavor and consistent cooking. Its definitely set it and walk away kind of deal. I've cooked Turkey, Ribs, Brisket, Pork Butts, Whole Chickens, chicken breast and steaks in it. They all come out fantastic. I've even had people ask me to do pulled pork for them for parties, after they ate mine. So I highly recommend this smoker.
Most of the complaints on here I see are easily corrected. The main thing you must do is clean the smoker after each use;
1. Do a high temp burn off after each use. You have to burn off grease buildup. Any left should be removed with cleaner or scraped off with razor blade. After a couple slow cooks, Grease buildup can catch fire.
2. Clean the glass (409 cuts through the buildup and leave it looking brand new)
3, Vacuum out the fire chamber and bottom of cabinet. Failing to clean out the fire chamber will lead to reduced smoke and the unit clogging up. Just like most pellet smokers.
4. Don't leave it out in the weather, pellets don't like moisture. It will get all gummed up. I store mine inside the garage, Its on wheels so not a issue.
5. Clean off thermostat at the back of the pit. Just a quick wipe and you will get more consistent temps.
The one down side is the control unit. It is cheaply made and the plastic rubber cover over the readouts comes loose with heat. Food and liquid gets in behind it. Doesn't impact the great cooking, but is definitely a defect. Thus I had to give this incredible machine 4 stars.

Assembly was a breeze. All the boxes were labeled with the contents and a few extra screws were included separately. It took about an hour by myself. I loaded it with pellets and did the initial burn in without problems. I smoked six pork butts and could have done at least six more. They turned out great. It worked great. I purchased this based upon my experience with my Pit Boss pellet grill which has performed flawlessly for the past year and is used at least 4 times a week year round. I look forward to using this for a long time.

Delivered yesterday I got box and top had been retaped didn't really think anything but after I got out of the box noticed big dent on the corner and some scratches on top of same corner. Appears the unit was dropped. The assembly of it was very easy. Started the break in an run it for about an hour an work great but very unhappy about the corn being dented and scratches.

Do your homework before buying this smoker! I purchased the 7series for my husband’s birthday last year and it has been broken more than it’s been used. We’ve had to replace 2 (maybe 3) temp probes, an igniter and now…the auger needs to be replaced!! All within a year timeframe. They send you the replacement part and you have to fix it yourself, which normally wouldn’t be a big deal but after spending $600 on a smoker and using it only a handful of times before it started displaying all sorts of error codes and malfunctioning, I’m not regretting buying a Pitt Boss altogether. They won’t send a replacement smoker, just continually ship the malfunctioning parts…which are many. Now that I’ve had so many issues with this one and I’ve had more time to do some research, there are more reliable smokers out there without all of these issues. Our auger is back ordered until July and so basically we won’t be able to use the smoker for the best part of the season. So disappointed.

I have had fires in my machine three times. I have used different pellets and the same thing happened.
I was cooking chicken thighs last weekend and stepped into the garage for five minutes. I came back in the house and saw the door had blown open and a raging fire was shooting out of the flame box. This was around the 4 hour mark (had been smoking ribs before the chicken went in).
Also, pellets must be removed completely or they will soak up air moisture and mold. I now weigh pellets to prevent waste.
The door to empty pellets is too high to clear out what is in the hopper. I now have to unscrew the whole hopper to remove the pellets after each use.
Lastly, the temp swings on this thing go from 200 - 250 during a 225 smoke.
I got mine at Home Depot and had read the negative reviews but decided I wanted a big smoker anyway (price was great).
I sent Pitt Boss an email last weekend and haven’t heard back. This thing is faulty through and through (3/4 smokes had fires that had to be put out due to pellet build up in the burn pit).
If you get it, keep an eye on it the entire time lest you set fire to something important.

Haven't used it yet, but the corner was dented/damaged when we pulled it out of the box. Not sure if this will affect its functioning, but it shouldn't be damaged when it's brand-new, especially when you pay this much for it.

SAT_LISA : Continual Errors while smoking
**Update 3/1/21** Every single issue others have explained is accurate. We've recd a new temp probe as well as control board. The Pit Boss customer service gave us about half a dozen "must-do's" in order for the smoker to work correctly Example: Leave door open and let it warm up for 10 minutes on 200 degrees. Make sure that the pellet hopper is 3/4 full when smoking to avoid air gaps. The chimney cap needs to have 2 inch gap from top of stack to bottom of gold cap. They do not have service techs to help reinstall all the replacement parts, so that is on you. My Husband did finally get the smoker to work by trial and error but how anyone else would know to do all these little 'must-do's' is beyond me. I still won't buy this product again.
We have yet to actually smoke an entire meal before having an issue with the smoker. It continually gives error codes resulting in the smoker completely shutting off. We have found that it smokes for about an hour and then will turn off. We trouble-shoot the errors our self, via their manual but that isn't helping. We've just submitted a case via the Pit Boss website to trouble shoot. We'll see how easy (or hard) it is to get this resolved.

I have no idea why anyone is having any trouble with error codes or temp issues ? I do have the 5.5 model and I’ve used it 5 times and not one error not one temp problem ? You plug it in you prime the hopper you set it to the smoke setting leave it alone prep your meat turn it to the temp you want or leave it on smoke for about a half hour then set your temp at say 225 for some ribs for about 4 hours wrap your meat in some butcher paper turn up the heat to 275 for an hour or hour and a half remove put some BBQ sauce on them put them back in for about half hour and whala perfect meat:) It doesn’t get any better ???? Oh and fill your water pan and line it with foil for easy clean up .

LOVE the smoker! There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to operating it (I tripped one of my outlets by not starting it up correctly) but if you actually follow the instructions you’ll be fine. I’ve used it at least 10 times at this point and my only complaint is the temperature does fluctuate sometimes at least 50 degrees but I generally smoke low and slow and that’s not a huge deal. Other than that there’s a cheap covering over the control panel that is starting to come off (after 3 months) I tried going on their website to complain about it and making a complaint online is not super easy it seems like you have to call. But in terms of some of the reviews I’ve seen about having issues with it feeding pellets I have had no issue but I follow the directions and clean it after use and don’t overfill the water pan

I used it twice and the somehow moisture got into the pellets and they hardened like concrete. I called “customer service” (which is a joke) and they told me it was a known problem. I asked where I could get it serviced and they said they don’t provide service, only parts. They walked through a process of disassembling it and pounding it with a chisel and hammer until the auger came loose. Now it won’t heat past 200 and won’t hold the temp. I would recommend to Lowes and Walmart that they drop this brand like a bad habit.

DON'T BOTHER. PRODUCT DEFECTIVE. WORKED FOR 20 MINUTES. THEN WOULDN'T GET UP TO TEMPERATURE. THE VENT ON THE TOP WAS BROKEN OUT OF THE BOX. NOT WORTH IT. BUY FROM MANUFACTURER.

So far so good. Good assembly instructions. Well built. It’s pretty big. I could probably have gone for a smaller model. I have used it a couple of times and things seem to work and have had a great outcome with the food. I made a couple beginner mistakes on first use and the temperature control was all over, dropping to 150 and then racing to 400 when on a 200 setting. It’s true that pit boss customer service is lousy. I emailed them with the temp control concerns and it took them 8 business days (11 total) to send a message back that was not very helpful and did not address all of my concerns. I figured out in the meantime that it was probably user error.
Brian : Buy the warranty
Temp gauge went out after a week called customer service lady was very rude and told me they won’t warranty the temp control and a new one would be about half of what I paid for the smoker!The problem with this is it the control is at the bottom where the water can drop into it so mine malfunctioned and got so hot it set the pellets on fire that was in the back of the smoker,shattered the glass and burned the paint off.

Excellent product, easy to use, cooks and smokes great. I have concerns over surface imperfections on the top of the cabinet. Appears to possible corrosion under the finishes. I have contacted the manufacturer and submitted my concerns. I have not received a resolution to my concerns at the time of this review.

Arrived early, I put it together and followed the instructions to burn it in and cook chicken breasts they came out fantastic. Very pleased with the product very easy to use.

This is a nice smoker however, I was not happy to see it on their site for a couple hundred less than they are selling it on Amazon.
We smoked 2-16 lb turkeys (side-by-side on cannons), chuck roast, burgers, chicken wings and they came out good. Still learning how to smoke food.
Jared : Horrible control board
Do not buy. The control board for this product is junk and poorly designed. The electronics sit right next to the fire box part at the bottom of the unit. I bought this unit at costco (they sell under the Louisiania Grills brand, but same thing with the same parent company). 3 months in the control board started giving constant error codes. Called customer support, wait in line for 45 minutes before they answered, they sent a new control board to install. The shipment of the replacement part took almost 6 weeks. It worked great again for 3 more months, then constant error codes. If you search for Pit Boss erL erH you will see lots of videos and forum discussions about these issues. The smoker would be great if they had done a little bit more design work on where to put the control board and the temperature sensor, right next to the hottest part of the box for both seems like a really dumb move to me.
