Questions about NIKKO HELLGRAMMITE 3" Floating Scented Super Durable Soft Bait
Q:
How do you rig them up?
Answer: I’ve Texas rigged it on a 1 EWG HOOK, not easy to do. Also on a 1/8 oz jig head. I read somewhere that wetting the hook helps, need to try that.
Answer: You can fish them like a real one (hooked through the collar) or wacky rig or hook them to a jig head. Any way you want, really.
Answer: Texas rigged on a size 1 worm hook.
Answer: Best with a jig like zman mushroom head circle hook
Q:
Is this price for one?
Answer: 4 in a pack
Answer: 5
Q:
what size jighead works best with this bait? 1/8, 1/16,1/32?
Answer: Depends ifishing in a stream or lake. I use a 1/16 or 1/8 mostly. It is by far the best river bait for smallmouth
Answer: It all depends on the current and water depth. I mostly fish the Potomac River which is pretty shallow and I usually use 1/16 but will go to 1/8 if it is not getting to the bottom because of depth or current. I usually cast them into the riffles and let them drift into the deeper pools at the end. IIRC, these are made out of pretty tough rubber, so I never Texas rigged them because I thought it would be too tough to pull the hook through on the hook set. I suppose you could do a Texas rig with the hook all the way through and just tucked into a tiny bit of the skin, I forget what this is called.
Answer: I personally prefer about 1/8 but so many work really well I'll also throw it weightless at times and let it float on top of the water
Answer: i use 1/16 mostly. depends how fast you want it to sink and how deep
Q:
is this any good for catfish?
Answer: It's amazing for bass. Ive caught sunfish, flounder, and sand trout on them as well. They probably are NOT the best bait for catfish, but catfish are known to hit lures from time to time, so it's still possible.
Answer: I have caught a few catfish on them
Q:
Do these float?
Answer: They most definitely float if rigged weightless. I have had great success when wading creeks and small rivers. The package they come in even says they float. I’ve caught the most fish with a small split shot and letting it sink slowly.
Answer: NO, BUT YOU DON'T WANT THEM TO FLOAT. USE WITH SPLIT SHOT APPROX. ONE FOOT FROM HELLGRAMMITE.
Answer: They are pretty heavy. Depending on which hook you use, it’s possible. However, not likely. We have had great success using these!! They’re so tough and you can catch numerous fish on the same bait.
Answer: Yes if rigged weightless , I usally texas rig them with a 3/8 or 1/4 oz weight if I want to get them down in the water column faster
Answer: Yes which gives them a great action and a lot more versatility in how you can rig it!
Answer: No
Answer: No they sink.
Q:
The product description says there are 4 baits per pack, but most of, if not all the customer reviews say there are 5 baits per pack. Is it 4 or 5?
Answer: I have ordered 2 packs of these baits so far and both of the packs that I received have contained 4 baits per pack.
Q:
Do you get 4 lures for 7.29
Answer: 5 i think
Answer: Yes
Q:
How many per pack?
Answer: I've only ever received 4 in a pack.
Answer: five
Q:
Are these baits made from Elaztech like Z-man baits?
Answer: NO, these are much better! They last longer and don't deform when stretched! Even better, they are safe for the environment and biodegradable!
Answer: No these dont contain any toxins are biodegradable and are stronger with a more realistic movement.
Q:
What's the size ?
Answer: They are all one size, about 3". They catch fish, just hard to thread hook through.
Answer: About 3" it is an exact match up to the live ones we sell in our tackle store i love them!
Q:
If you buy these from bass pro shop you get 15 for just under six bucks. Has anybody used both of these and is one better than the other?
Answer: I've bought both, the bass pro ones are not as tough as the Nikko's! My buddy pulled on the bass pro, to see how stretchy they were, compared to the Nikko's. The bass pro came apart after just a little pressure! Whereas the Nikko stretched at least 12" and never came apart! Sure ya only get 7 in the Nikko's, vs 15 in the bass pro, but for my money I'll stay with the Nikko's!
Answer: I haven’t used the BassPro brand but would almost guarantee you these are better. Unless your line breaks, you can catch 100+ bass on just one. Not one bag, but just one bait!
Answer: The ones from Nikki really last and when you stretch them they release a scent. But to be honest I catch alot more with BassPros. I use them all the time
Q:
For Nikko. When are your baits going to be available with free Prime shipping?
Q:
What size rod and line weight works best with 3 in hellgrammite?
Answer: I ultra lite rod and reel with 4 or 6 lb. Line.
Q:
How many are in a package ?
Q:
Would these be good lures for fishing in lakes or ponds? Or, are they meant for river fishing?
Answer: I've fished these A LOT in ponds and small lakes. They do amazingly well in any body of water. I've even caught saltwater species on them.
Answer: I use these in all types of bodies of water, I have been slaying fish with them in ponds, rivers and lakes.
Answer: Any body of water they work great. I use them for fun and tournament fishing on deep clear water and muddy and stained water.
Answer: I’ve only seen them used in Rivers .. But I will try them in the local ponds .
Answer: Rivers and streams are great with these but anything near the bank will be entertained by these.
Answer: Yes yes and yes these will work for all of those applications!
Q:
how many in a package?
Answer: It comes with 4. Do not mix them with other soft plastics because the hellgrammites melt. They’re super durable and you’ll probably never rip one.
Answer: 4
Answer: 5 per packege
Q:
How does the hook attach to this lure?
Answer: You can rig this bait in many ways. Nose hook or texas are the ways I do it. There are videos on Nikko's Facebook page that could help you.
Answer: I just go through it like a Ned rig but also use it on a drop shot or Texas rig.
Answer: Similar to that of a rubber worm. Best to use a weedless jighead
Q:
what is a good size hook for these?
Answer: Best is Zman 1/10 bed rig hook. 2nd option is #1 glock. Best smallmouth bait on the market!
Q:
how long are they ?
Answer: 3 inches
Product reviews of NIKKO HELLGRAMMITE 3" Floating Scented Super Durable Soft Bait
Henry : Highly Recommend!
These Nikko soft plastics are amazing! They are biodisengradable some have U.V. properties which allow them to glow in darker waters they are super durable dont slip around on the hook stretch them to release more scent as long as you dont break them off you can catch literally 100s of fish per a plastic unheard of!
Steven Burris : Tough as nails
They are good baits but a little hard to put on jig
Goran : river bass loves these things
This one is a killer for bass in rivers.
Ronnie Barksdale : Fish love's them!
These things work and don't bite like the real ones. Fish don't seem to notice the difference from the real ones. It's almost impossible to destroy these!
Michael Radford : Good lure to catch a variety of fish
Very durable awesome lure will catch just about everything
pete : Great bait
Hellgrammite is an effective and durable bait.
Dale Walker : Great lure for tough fishing.
Life like and tough. I caught a personal best spotted bass the first time I tied it on. Great winter bass lire.
Tony Wedding : Should be a productive lure
Although I have yet to utilize it the feel and ease of applying to hook should make it an easy lure to use. Also according to videos I have watched it should be a productive lure.
Crazyass old Veteran! : Try em, you'll love em!
Great for creek fishin!
DavidR : Love NIKKO baits!! Durable and life like
Yes you only get 5 but WOW, incredibly durable stuff. Hooks do not go in or come back out easily. I pre rig on 1/16 and 1/8 ounce weighted hooks to save time when fishing. Catches so many fish on one bait. HAVEN'T RIPPED ONE YET! And what a fish catcher!
CAUTION: Keep separate from other plastics, they melt into a sticky mess.
Raptor : almost unfair
I also saw these on you tube creek fishing adventure. They work so well that i feel like i'm cheating when i use them. They will last forever and only if you get hung up will you need to buy more. That is when they feel expensive. I love them. i haven't had any melt on me but i dont keep my tackle in direct sun.
tjs07b : Great Bait... beware of color
Seems like a great soft plastic, but I was really hoping to get green pumpkin like advertised. My bag said green pumpkin but the bait is bright purple.
Thomas Lott : Great Lure!!!
I kill bass with this lure. I learned about it from this guy on social media and it really does work in the right conditions. Practice with it in some clear water to see how it floats because the balance is great with the right sized hook.
MawMaw2005 : The fish seem to like them
My husband asked me to buy these for him. He has fished with them several times and has been pleased with the results.
Crazyass old Veteran! : Try em, you'll love em!
Great for creek fishin!
Big-D : Durable and catches fish
Works great caught lots of fish, durable lasts a long time.. check out my full review on YouTube channel " Fishing_With_Big-D
Anonymous : Not for Texas rigging
So this stuff is extremely durable but that creates its own faults. I typically like to fish small baits like this on a 1/0 worm hook Texas rigged. Getting the hook through this material was tough and it doesn’t slide back the hook when you get a bite because the material really sticks tight to the hook.
I would only recommend this of drop shot or a jig head. If you don’t get stuck and lose them they will last a long time. Unfortunately the old jig head likes to find rocks and they are pricey for only 4. You will probably lose them before they wear out.
Other hellgrammites on the market are the gulp which are the farthest thing from durable and don’t look as nice. The basspro ones are great for Texas rigging and catch a lot of fish. They don’t look nearly as authentic as these but are more of a typical soft plastic.
Hope this helps.
Boyd96 : True to life hellgrammite lures!
Though I haven't caught any big bass on these hellgrammites, yet. I'm getting a lot of nibbles and bites - mostly from pan fish. I still have to get the "hookset" just right.

Amazon Customer : It works
When i got the bait, it looked good so took it to a spot on the pond where I know fish are. Got a 1 pound bass after a few cast. So I know it work and then got a 2 pound bass. Must say the plastic is durable after the 2 fish but for some reason it start changing color on me from watermelon red flakes to purple with red flakes. Also the bait is a little hard to rig but not as hard to rig like the z man Ned rig
Amazon Customer : Needs to be in your tackle box!
These baits work so well I love the natural color and the head even glows in the dark!
Jbill : Great
Works great for bluegill and other pan fish very tough and catch many fish on one bait
Trisha Nolan : Its really hard to give this a bad review....
because I know people catch fish with this, I've seen it on YouTube. As for me though, I'm up to four days of fishing and not one fish. It wasn't until the last day that I finally got a strike. I watched something little hit at the lure as it hit the water and then swam away. I've tried it in a big river, small streams, an old quarry, and an abandoned strip mine... Nothing but that one bite. It must be me, right? OK, but part of the reason I bought this was because I thought there was no wrong way to rig it/no wrong way to fish it. Do I get a prize for being the first one to accomplish this(lol)? I also find it hard to get a hook through the lure. I guess thats the price you pay for having a lure able to take the punishment this thing does. I'll keep trying. I'll try some different hooks and some different ways to rig it and see what happens. If I ever catch a fish I'll give an update.
Joshua : Durable
Action is great. Hard to get a hook in it.
James B : Very versatile bait!
On top of being the most durable bait in the market the Nikko Hellgrammite is extremely versatile as well. You can rig this thing many different ways and still slay fish with them. It is a great soft plastic that can be used for many different species of fish and it continues to produce quality fish at any time of the year!
Joseph Cain : they catch all types of fish
great for creek fishing. paired with a 1/8 jighead, they catch all the types in the creek and not only small ones
MawMaw2005 : The fish seem to like them
My husband asked me to buy these for him. He has fished with them several times and has been pleased with the results.
Amazon Customer : Most amazing bait I have ever fished!
This bait just flat out catches fish! I've used it for smallies and largemouth bass and the all love it. I've fished it a bunch of different ways and they all work. Amazing. And the things are tough, too. These have gotta be the toughest baits out there. My new go-to bait.
William Heller : Shhhhhh don't tell anyone #TheseAreTheBest
Would you like to save money and use one plastic bait all year round? If your line didn't break, you could. Nikko plastic is so durable, you could catch 100's.. 1000's of fish and the bait will look and react the exact same. Not only will you catch quantities, but you'll catch BIG fish too!!! Pick up a pack, you won't be disappointed.
Joe Kolba : Melted just from being outside for a day
I had purchased these and had them still in the original packaging in my tackle box, by the end of the day they were all melted together in a clump. Didn't even get to try them once.
John in N.H. : Still an AMAZING Lure ! GET IT NOW !!!!
Fisherman often overlook this insects as a bait...Well... DON'T !!!! Trout and Bass, (especially Smallmouth) CRUSH these lures!!! If you get a hit, it is always savage!. Trout are very aggressive on these as well up here in NH Rivers. These Lures give you 1 problem...THEY are TOUGH to get on the hook !, It feels more like inserting a hook into soft car tire! The hook basically bounces right back out...If you lube(spit) on the hook as you insert it, it helps. It almost feels like solid surgical tubing(silicone?)...It's a GOOD thing though, because The lures have shown NO Wear, cuts or deforming after at least 30 fish so far! Impressive!. The Lures FLOAT, even with a 3/0 small rubber worm hook, they will suspend at 1ft with a small split shot weight. I have ordered some weighted worm hooks and will update as to how they work. Manufacturer states you can stretch the lure to revive the built in scent...well I got no way to prove or disprove that...ALL I know is they work, and are rugged as can be!. Great value. and a great bait for the slow days. If you can, try them, You will agree! Please let me know your results too, if you can! Thanks! Happy Fishin' ! - Johnny NH
Thomas Lott : Great Lure!!!
I kill bass with this lure. I learned about it from this guy on social media and it really does work in the right conditions. Practice with it in some clear water to see how it floats because the balance is great with the right sized hook.
kerry lesher : Great lure
Great for bass
Boyd96 : True to life hellgrammite lures!

Kode Bleuu : They work but...
These lures look really nice and get lots of attention on the water, especially while stream fishing. However, they are pricey for the amount you get in the bag. Other companies that make similar products such as Mepps/Mister Twister give you almost triple for the price. The HUGE downside is THEY FLOAT! I didn't find that out until I was on the water, so I had to adjust on the fly (no biggie) to keep them on the bottom, where real hellgrammites dwell. Also, the "natural" color turns a fluorescent purple-ish color in the sunlight and water...it didn't blend in 'naturally' at all...I wasn't expecting such a color change. Tight lines to all.
d boston : Good product
These are some tough soft plastics. I think they will last for multiple fish. They are so tough they don't go on the screw type jig heads very easily or at all. I have not fished with them yet but no doubt they will work, they have a good action, I hook them on a jig head with a little bit of curve to the body and then will dead drift or roll them in the current like a real Hellgramite that got washed loose from the bottom. Expensive but considering how much longer these will last over other brands then they are a good value.
callipiter : Bass love them
These are effective and long lasting - so long as you keep them from getting snagged. Hook them front or back, twitch them on the bottom or slow retrieve with a 1/32 or 1/16 jig head and you'll catch fish. I've caught largemouth and smallmouth bass each time so far.
Aaron : Expensive and only 4 pack
But pricey and it melted while being hot but holds up well like zman
Creek Fishing Adventures : The Hellgrammite is extremely tough. You can re hook it several times and it won’t tare up.
The smallmouth bass can’t seem to turn this down. I have caught so many bass that didn’t seem to be hungry but just had to hit this lure.
Runi : Legit!
Expensive but definitely put fish in the boat!
Henry : Wicked Soft Plastics!
These Nikko soft plastics are amazing! They are biodisengradable some have U.V. properties which allow them to glow in darker waters they are super durable dont slip around on the hook stretch them to release more scent as long as you dont break them off you can catch literally 100s of fish per a plastic unheard of!
Amazon Customer : Durable and catch fish!
Very durable which was nice as they are not cheap. Definitely catch fish!

B Smith : Nikko Natural Hellgrammites Rock
I was a live bait/live hellgrammite user. I saw a YouTuber (John from Creek Fishing Adventures) using the natural color Nikko hellgrammite so I decided to try them. I am glad I did! I have completely switched from using live hellgrammites to using the Nikko hellgrammites. I have caught more (and larger) bass since using these. I HIGHLY recommend these. All my fishing friends have switched and if you try them, you will too!
Retired and Happy : Incredibly Lifelike and Durable
Love the realistic feel and fish presentation. I live near the Virginia coast where salt fishing is king. But my occasional trips to local freshwater reservoirs with these baits yields everything from bluegills, to crappie to bass. Am anxious to try them out on small mouth in the James River near Richmond.
Denali Dreamin' : Smallmouth money!
Perfect for Idaho smallies!!
Amazon Customer : Super!
I bought this color after having a great experience with another color (natural) first. The results.....every bit as good as the first time around. Whatever the manufacturer did to this bait, it works like crazy and is miles ahead of other hellgrammite type of baits I have tried. One pack lasts a long time. I've now fished the hellgrammites long enough to absolutely say that not only do the catch more fish, they also save me time and money....so I can catch more fish!
Whitney H. : This is a Great Bait
30+lb dinosaur on 8lb test line. Stressed my equipment so much that the hook snapped in two when I removed it for release. You cannot kill these lures. Popped it back onto another hook and ready to go again. Catfish, smallies, large mouth... they all go for it.
