From the manufacturer
KVD Crankbaits
Squarebill Crankbait
Designed to the exact specifications of angling legend Kevin VanDam. Perfect for shallow water and power fishing. The squarebill design and unique "hunting" action will constantly "wander" with erratic movement, while still running true. It also deflects perfectly off cover to entice strikes. The KVD series of baits are designed with no internal rattles for a "silent" approach.
Flat Side Crankbait
The KVD 1.5 Flat Side crankbait has a slender modified flat side for erratic thumping action with a body size similar to the KVD 1.5 Squarebill.

Questions about Strike King Square Bill Crankbait
Q:
whats the best color?
Answer: I use them in Michigan in clear water lakes for smallmouth..best colors for me are red or brown crawfish..
Answer: Red is absolutely the best in stained or muddy water
Answer: If your Bass fishing in the upper mid-west, get an "Orange Bream" KVD squarebill. You will thank me.
Answer: Bass one...They work great!
Answer: Depending on time of the year, Tennessee shad or Baby bass.
Q:
can i use it on surf casting ? if not what is the advice ?
Answer: It was designed to catch Largemouth Bass. As far as surf casting? It is too light to cast far.
Answer: I don't think this lure would be ideal for surf fishing. You would probably need a weight to get good casts. You want to cast as far as possible in surf. This lure might put a lot of strain on the line.
Answer: You could but it is a bit over kill for that small bait. A MH spin casting rod would be much better if you want a spin cast
Q:
Can you use these in saltwater applications? I'm just getting into fishing, so, sorry if this is a stupid question.
Answer: This is not considered a saltwater lure. It's a bass lure for freshwater lakes. I do not know where you are fishing or what you are fishing for, but thee are better choices.
Answer: I don't see why not, make sure to rinse salt water off lure when done.
Answer: You can. But you need to change out the hooks because they rust quick.
Q:
does the green pumping craw color have a purple tint to the top?
Answer: i dont know for sure, but your color is important from bottom, that is where your strikes of fish come from. They are looking up.
Answer: Not sure but don't think so
Q:
Why does it not have a rattle? Wouldn't that be a pro to getting a fishes attention?
Answer: If you're looking for a rattle, get the strike king Rattle traps. These crank baits make plenty enough noise for fish to hear
Answer: Not always! Sometimes fish prefer the silent lure to one with rattles. I find in clear water that is the case. I use rattles to help aid in location of the lure in poor water clarity conditions.
Answer: They do come with rattles. Theirs silent crankbaits and rattling crankbaits.
Answer: You might want to do a little more research with your baits. You don't always want a rattle on your baits. If this is what you want, then try a rattle trap. These are crankbaits.
Answer: Early in the season and on water with heavy pressure it is sometimes better not to have a rattle inside. It tends to spook the fish more than attract them. It's best to have a selection of both types. Rattle traps (lipless cranks) are not be a good substitute for square bill crank baits. The actions are different, as well as the depths. I prefer the wider wobble of the square bill when the water is warmer (late spring and summer in Ok). You can get square bills in both rattle and silent types. Hope this helped.
Answer: I use it when I'm fishing water with a lot of pressure, It makes them bite for reaction more than hunger. I think at least
Q:
Why are the prices so high? The 2.5 size models can be found for $5.69 - $6.49 at almost any tackle shop. These are listed at 40-60% above that.
Q:
How long is each lure?
Answer: KVD HC 1.0 2" 1/4oz 2-4ft
Answer: The size that is listed as ounces is actually the length. 1.5 inches, 2.5 inches etc, rather than ounces.
Q:
what's the weight for the 1.5 KVD cranks?
Answer: I believe this Crankbait is available in two weights, 1.5oz and 2.5oz.
Answer: From the official catalog:
Answer: 3/8 oz
Q:
Can these be used to catch bluegills, tilipia, and catfish?
Answer: I would say no due to the size of their mouths to the size of the baits
Answer: Not usually.
Q:
What are all of the dimensions of the different sizes?
Q:
What’s the length on the 1.5 and 2.5 from beginning of the bill to tail?
Q:
The size/weight does not match bass pro. i'm looking for the standard 1.5 which is listed as 2 3/4" and 7/16oz. this lists a 1.5inch or 1.5 ounc?
Answer: At the price their showing, even if it’s actually a 1.5, go with 6th Sense. Any questions, just call them and they help you pick color, size, etc. And you don’t have to change hooks out of the package! 1.5 should be your standard 1.5 on here. If you click on 1.5 your selection is limited. Amazon really need to revamp their fishing section IMO. I run into this problem allot with other lures. But hard to beat 2 day vs 1 week+ shipping!
Q:
how long are they
Answer: 2.5- once does not mean 2.5oz I ordered these by mistake thinking that's what it meant seller would not respond for refund 2.5 is the model and is about 3.25" long and $5.99 at academy sports.
Answer: About 3.5 inches but 2.5 refers to depth lure runs not length or wait
Q:
How long is the 1 ounce crankbait.
Answer: 2-1/2"
Answer: 3inch
Answer: appox 2inches
Q:
Why is there two of each color one with a number and one without?
Answer: have no idea..i did ot notice that about lure
Q:
What is the size of it? always of mention of the size, coz i want small baits to catch carps, eels, loaches, and glassy. Usually not so big to catch 4"
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Three different sizes 1.0, 1.5 and 2.5.
Q:
I noticed some colors mention rattles and some say "with no internal rattles." Do these have rattles or not?
Answer: It depends on the model. I believe the actual KVD ones are silent and the standard versions have rattles.
Answer: The red one I got did
Answer: mine does not
Q:
how do you work these baits if they float? aren't they supposed to dive 3 to 5 feet?
Answer: you just reel them in and they dive to 3-5 feet. You can reel them in, pause, let them float up if you desire. If you get hung up on a weed or a log,
Answer: They do dive. I used them for walleyes, bass, and northern pike and they worked great! I used a medium retrieve speed. They have a lot of movement and click.
Answer: They have to float otherwise they couldn't swim shallow. Crank baits are hollow baits that only dive when being reeled in. The square bill on the front dives below the waters surface and swims three to five feet deep
Answer: When you crank them in, they dive below the surface, but, while fishing around brush or trees or rock, when you feel an obstruction, you stop cranking, and they will float up past whatever stopped them, clear of whatever it was, often getting a strike, or allowing you to then continue cranking.
Answer: The plastic bill on the front is what makes them dive. Don't be afraid to throw squarebills into nasty wood cover.
Q:
How big is it
Answer: You can pick whatever weight you desire. Strike king has full dimiesion guided on website
Answer: It's 2-1/2"
Q:
Is this good for catching large mouth bass?
Answer: yes.also good on smallmouth bass
Answer: Yes it is, but when the temp gets hotter, the fish go deeper and this might not make it to that depth. The water cools at night, and the bass will come up to feed.
Answer: Great for it. Any type of bass.
Answer: Yes.. good bait for catching LMB
Answer: This is my go-to Crankbait for largemouth. Have tried various colors and sizes but the 1.5 shad color seems to always deliver for me.
Q:
Are they good for crappie?
Q:
I want gizzard shad but it says "1.5-ounce". does this mean the lure is an ounce? i see the sizes/weights on tacklewarehouse and this is misleading.
Answer: Just so you know the 2.5 is a half ounce so 1.5 Is smaller. The 1.5 is actually inches and if I was you I would go with a 2.5. Inches they work better!
Answer: Yes its 1 1/2 ounces.
Answer: That’s 1 and a half ounces
Answer: Yeah ....it’s a beast
Answer: Yes
Product reviews of Strike King Square Bill Crankbait
DaleMac56 : KVD Sexy Shad is the absolute best crankbait!
I used the KVD Sexy Shad crankbait for the first time yesterday. I caught a 5 pound Largemouth Bass on my third cast. Impressive enough. I went on to catch a 2 pound and a 1 pound Largemouth. Then here is where it gets very impressive... I caught a 5 pound catfish (unreal I know) and a 12+ pound Striped Bass. What a great day. I ordered 2 more today in case I ever lose this one. I would jump in freezing water to retrieve a KVD Sexy Shad crankbait after my day.
Song weaver : good!!
good bait
M203 Spc : Strike King Square Bill Crankbait (Sexy Shad, 2.5-Ounce)
great swimming action, all that's needed is a constant reel in speed and the lure does the job. paint is very durable, no chip or fade
Kawika : Five Stars
Great product!
JCF : Tried a bunch of stuff that day and this baby produced two fish when nothing else produced (pretty cool water still)
This crankbait in the orange belly craw color just landed me about a 5lb smallie in early April off the Columbia River. Tried a bunch of stuff that day and this baby produced two fish when nothing else produced (pretty cool water still). Will order a couple more for the box!
**UPDATE**
I fished these through the pre-spawn and well into summer and fall and they never let me down. The action on these square bill cranks is really fantastic and fish bite enticing. I like the shallow retrieve late summer to avoid all the weeds in the river.
Rccolaman : Decent lure
Firstly id like to say that my favorite type of lure is a crankbait so I am no beginner to using them. I typically catch over 20 fish an outing. With that being said I just cant catch fish with these and I own them in bluegill and pumpkin seed. personally id recommend people taking a look at rapala lures they all perform. Not saying this is a bad lure I just cant recommend a lure to other fishermen that I cant get one strike off. Mind you I would switch to a rapala crankbait and cast the same areas and catch bass. The dept profiles on the lures are almost exactly the same. Im not giving up on them so if anything changes I will update this review.
tom beck : works resh or salt water !
deadly
Joseph Wiele : WARNING! take off the tie on split ring.
Great eratic movements out of the packaging, But, if you take off the split ring from the tie on above the bill, then it gets even more crazy movement that gets almost too many bites for the lure to handle, I've bent hooks straight on this thing. When buying new ones, get mustad, not gamakatsu or trokar as they aren't as sharp.
Kenny : fish love them

Todd Flack : Awesome squarebill!
I love these for fishing the shallows for largemouth/smallmouth. I use them in lakes and rivers. I've caught quite a few quality fish on these. KVD has won tournaments using this lure as well. Try em!

Erica Kessler : very attractive crankbait!
What a beautiful crankbait! Looks great in the water - very realistic motion! The best thing about this color is that it works in stained, clear or mucky waters! I would definitely recommend it!

Amazon Customer : BUYERS BE WARE. False advertising. Not 2.5oz. Waste of money
Don’t buy. Not 2.5 oz. it’s not even 2.5 inches. False advertising. And horrible hooks. Don’t buy
Bradley Alty : Five Stars
Great Lure
Steve Grimes : B
Great bait.
Hoe Wai Cheong : Poor QC
Product was faulty, body came apart. A gap was evident allowing water into body. Poor quality control.
Ashton : 1.5 ounce BLUEGILL coloration is not as shown.
I ordered a 2.5 ounce and this 1.5 ounce crankbait with the BLUEGILL pattern. Although the pics indicate that the coloration is a bit different/ more vibrant with the 1.5 ounce than the 2.5 ounce, the pic is WRONG. The coloration is NOT as shown for the 1.5. Instead it looks exactly the same as the 2.5.
Other than that, it appears to be a perfectly made non-rattling crankbait.
GUSS : This color gets the fish

Great Lure
justinM10 : Great Crankbaits I think all Anglers should have in their arsenal.
This lure is a great for fishing in 6'-10' depth. The square bill really gives it the control any anglers wants. Its got just enough weight to cast it perfectly. I have a 7' Ugly Stick w/ a Quantam Spinning Reel w/ 300yrds 8lb test mono and I can easily cast this bait 15-20 yards. Maybe more.
Using it is simple. Reel and you'll get the realistic shake that a Bass cant resist. The color (Baby Largemouth) is great. Green, with shades of red, white, grey/silver and black.
Now I catch all sizes of bass on this, but mostly I pull it out when I want to catch the big bass I just saw jump or alongside patches of weeds, stumps, rocks, wherever they are hiding to attract em out.
For medium depths it's perfect. Again, the square bill really gives you much more control than round ones. It doesnt dive as quick but its simple to control. Reel in and it shakes along as it 'swims' looking like a bait fish. Give slack and it slowly floats and turns to give you more "hang time" in a certain area. Giving the bass that extra couple of seconds to grab it.
Last thing, I usually don't use Cranks. They get tangled, caught on anything that isn't water and always get the treble hook in your skin. But I can't help but use this when I see that big Largemouth jump outta water. And this one looks great, feels good and very importantly for me, I can cast it far (with the smallest weight too) It's a great Crankbait.

great swimming action, all that's needed is a constant reel in speed and the lure does the job. paint is very durable, no chip or fade
Braden Freed : Decent overall but worked well in a pinch!
Great action! Still learning how to bass fish, this wasn't working that well for me overall but when nothing, and I mean NOTHING was working this bait caught 2 back to back. I was running sexy shad. I could see the monsters in the water and they ignored everything, threw this on and BAM! 5LB BASS
