Questions about Dyna-Glo DGX780BDC-D 36" Vertical Charcoal Smoker
Q:
What cover fits this model?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Dyna-Glo DG784GSC Premium Vertical Smoker Cover fits good and leaves about 3 inches at the bottom for air to get in.
Answer: I called the manufacturer and they told me that they dont have a cover yet for the Dyna-Glo. You have to either get a generic cover or have a custom cover made.
Answer: I bought an after market one.
Q:
what are the dimensions of the cooling racks (lengthxwidth) or (width x depth)
Answer: Product Dimensions: 27 x 19.2 x 46.5 inches
Answer: THE ACTUAL SIZE OF these grates are 22.25" W x 13.46" D -GHP Group Customer Support. All the other answers refer to the 'smaller' DG Smokers.
Answer: Sam they are 14" wide x 13" deep. I can hang 20 sticks of sausage comfortably. Its a nice smoker, the double door is very handy you don't let heat escape when tending water and wood chips
Answer: 13in deep 14 1/4 wide
Answer: 27*19 inches
Q:
Can this smoker connect to a natural gas source?
Answer: Designed for use with LP gas. Manual says nothing about Natural gas conversion. Without consulting the manufacturer I would have to say no.
Answer: Generally, you can convert natural to LP with a change of orifices but rarely LP to natural.
Q:
Does the standard size fit a full brisket, or would i need to get different cuts?
Answer: I have not done a brisket but the inside cooking space on one rack would be about 12" deep and 14 " wide. If you had a 20" brisket you would have to cut it in half.
Answer: I've smoked a decent size brisket with no problem. I'm sure you could find one that was too big, but should handle most of them.
Answer: Never used a full brisket in there but you may have to get cuts. Hard to say without actually trying. I bought it for my father so he is the one using it.
Answer: Different cuts ; / cut and haft
Answer: I have smoked a 13 lb Turkey if that helps
Q:
What are the inside dimensions of the 3 different sizes of this smoker?
Q:
What is the size of the racks? LxW
Q:
i like to make bacon it is cold smoked at 85-100 degrees will this smoker go that low?
Answer: Hello Bill, this smoker can go as low as 100 degrees, we suggest a charcoal smoker that you can adjust the temperatures of by adding or taking away coals. -GHP Group Customer Support
Answer: Hello, i wish i could answer from personal experience, but I've never really smoked anything at that liw of temp... however, i can say that my thermo guage goes as low as 100 degrees and the burners are adjustable in flame hight. I would make sure the flame hight is not so low as to blow out if windy, but i can see where smoking at 100 could be feasible, sorry I could not have been more help sincerely, Don
Answer: No the propane smoker won't go that low I think you should try and find a electric smoker!
Answer: No this smoker won't go that low even with all vents opened
Answer: No you won't be able to smoke and keep the temp that low in this smoker.
Answer: Yes...you'll have to use the vents along with the burner adjustment.
Q:
where can I get replacement racks?
Answer: Not sure. Maybe contact the Dyna-Glo. You would think that they would have replacement racks. Maybe a Bar-B-Que store.
Answer: Sorry FOUND them. You can get them at Home Depot
Answer: I have looked on several sites and cannot find any, only grates for the grills.
Answer: I would check the Dyna-Glo website
Q:
Does anyone else have problems keeping the temp at 200? It keep going up to 400 and I have the vents closed
Answer: I have that problem. It's hard to keep a constant temp. U have to check it almost every 15 minutes to adjust the temp. Keep your water filled and fill the wood chip holder full. Regularly. Also try cooking at 250°. Yes it will get done quicker but it's easier to sustain. Keep your vents open on one side. See if that helps if not try them both open. Gradually u will c a difference and it will help u figure out how much that burner needs turned up or down.
Answer: Closing the vents will just raise the temp. This is a gas unit, the vents allow heat to escape.
Answer: Hello Kev,
Answer: I would open up the vents to adjust the temp, or slightly open the door, people do this at the regular grill.....
Answer: I'm having the opposite problem and going through a TON of charcoal. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: I have had mine overheat as well, but I have found through trial and error that the best way to regulate the temp. is to adjust the amount of charcoal you use. When mine overheated, I would just crack the bottom door a bit to let out the heat.
Q:
Are you able to replace the regulator with a Bayou Classic M5HPR-1 with brass control valve to better control the temp? Are other parts needed?
Answer: Hey Joseph,
Q:
what is the chip box made of
Answer: Carbon steel. I can fit chips and small chunks in it. big.

Answer: It's made from metal that paint in black

Answer: hose and regulator-YES no tank
Answer: The smoker comes with a hose and regulator but no tank.

Answer: This is the cover I ordered for mine. I like the durability and quality of this product. It fits perfectly, but a small part of the bottom is exposed, which I found not to be a problem. The top of the burner panel and knob are exposed.
Answer: Other than ordering a custom one - I think there is a site listed on Dynaglow's website with dimensions - I just use a tarp.
Q:

Q:
Does have a rib rack
Answer: Hello Cal, this smoker does not have designated rib racks but it does have 4 adjustable cooking grates. We apologize for any inconvenience. -GHP Group Customer Support
Answer: You don't need a special rack for ribs. Just lay them on the racks. That is what I do and they come our great.
Answer: If you mean a hanging one, no.
Answer: No it does not
Answer: No
Q:
How big is the inside of the fire box?
Answer: It’s pretty small
Q:
Not getting hot enough? We’re doing everything right and we can’t get past 120 degrees!? Any suggestions? Should we seal it?
Answer: Make sure you are getting a good "bloom" from the burner. Sometimes the burner will light, but not fully bloom and give a consistent temperature. It may seem obvious but perhaps you don't have enough gas in the propane or the valve is not fully opened. I let pressure build up in the line before I open the gas valve on the smoker. This cures the small flame issue. Hope this helps.
Answer: Diconect gas, and make sure switch on grill is off.
Answer: You probably need to check the thermometer in the unit
Q:
I cant get the burner to ignite!! Any help?!?
Answer: There are no details. Does the ignitor work. If it does. Position the tip close to the burner so that the gas will ignite.
Answer: It sounds like a faulty Electro-pulse ignition. Ask them for a replacement. In the meantime you can use a long handle lighter. I never had a problem with mine but the fix is easy. Good luck.
Answer: Depending on where you're at, it might be too cold for the propane to light. Propane doesn't like to burn in colder temperatures. That's been my experience.
Answer: are you sure you have gas? Ours just lights when we press the button.
Answer: The manual will show you how to put a battery in the switch check to see if it is in the proper direction
Q:
Looking for a new smoker, moving from a weber smokey mountain with bbq guru temp control. question how is long term the temp control for a brisket?
Answer: The time it takes to cook brisket is dependent on several factors, including your desired tenderness and average smoker temp time. For an estimate of cook times by food type, check out our users manual. - GHP Group Customer Support
Answer: Mine holds the temp perfectly. I open the bottom door to add liquids and wood and the temp pretty much holds.
Answer: Not sure, sorry. Gato

Answer: yes
Q:
How long does one propane tank last? Looking for long smokes 10 to 20 hours.
Answer: This smoker has a 20,000-BTU cast iron burner, so it uses approximately 1 gallon of propane every 4.6 hours, therefore, a 5lb tank will last roughly 22.875 hours. -GHP Group Customer Service
Answer: When I researched propane smokers I read a tank should last 20-25 hours. That has been my experience. I keep 2-3 thanks full. I also have learned to finish the smoking process in a roaster in the oven @200 degrees. This saves hours of propane time when the smoker isn't really smoking any longer.
Answer: Has no bearing on the smoker but the size of the propane tank. If your smoking around 200, the longest I've run it is about 5 hours and there is plenty left so I'd imagine 10 hours wouldn't be a problem for a standard size grill tank. You can buy bigger propane tanks also.
Answer: The 10 hr wont be a problem, might be pushing it with 20 hr smoke though.
Q:
how can i get replacement door closures for the extra large size. Broke after 3 uses. Thank You
Answer: Look in the booklet you got. Somewhere there is an 800 number you can call. When you dial the number it will ring and then you get voice mail. Select the number you want and talk to the person. Have your model number ready because they will need it. You may have to email them photos of the broken part. I had to when one of the racks I got was broken upon arrival. It took about 10 days for replacements. If you don't have the manual, you can download one. Just google dyna-glo and the model number.
Q:
What is the temperature range of this smoker?
Answer: My on the front says 100 to 600 degrees. However it was broken in pieces out of the box. Since it was delivered at 3 the day before Thanksgiving that is totally another story I used a hanging oven gauge. The company sent another one but wasn't the one for this unit and the oven gauge works more accurate for temp control. I will say this is my second smoker and this unit is much easier to control the unit, love the lighter and hope after it gets broken in that the results will be great.
Answer: I've been able to achieve 150 to around 275 degrees.
Answer: At low setting I got 200 or so, at high i got up to 350
Answer: 200 to 275 consistent 225
Answer: 0 to 250
Q:
Why can't this be delivered to my residents?
Answer: depending on where you order from, it can be.
Q:
Are jerky grates available as accessory?
Answer: I have never looked for them I hang my jerky and sausage on rods that I made, you should be able to find something that will work out!
Answer: Hello S. E. Hamilton, we do not offer any additional accessories for this smoker. We apologize for any inconvenience. We hope that previous answers will help you! -GHP Group Customer Support
Answer: Not that I'm aware of, I use metal skewer/shish-kabob sticks to hang mine thru the grates. Works great!
Q:
Does it blow out in the wind
Answer: I have used this smoker for over 5 years now. I keep the vents on the bottom of the smoker closed. So far this has not occurred. I do keep an eye on the smoker at all time watching the temperature gauge. Hope this helps, Gato.
Answer: No it cool down some they all do that they all do that.
Answer: No it does not.
Q:
I there a rotisserie kit that will work in these smokers?
Answer: No you won't need one nor anywhere that you could mount one.
Q:
Does this smoker come with a cover?
Answer: No it does not come with a cover
Answer: No, and I suggest getting it and making careful measurements BEFORE ordering a cover.
Answer: No cover came with mine
Answer: no
Answer: No
Answer: no
Q:
Can I hang a slab of ribs with this smoker?
Answer: I wouldn't cuz one end would be charged badly. I'm still dialing in this smoker but it does preform well. Tends to run hot tho. Having a ruff time keeping it @ 2-250-3 most times it runs a 400 so I'd say don't hang ribs. Cut em in half and use the grates
Answer: This smoker does not include hooks, but the user may be able to hang the slabs from the top grate by using their own rib hooks. - GHP Group Customer Support
Answer: I'm sure you can if you removed all the racks. it comes with a rib rack that holds 4 or 5 full racks. I have done 4 lamb racks laying bone side down that turned out awesome
Answer: It comes with hooks for sausage. I’m sure you could find a way have not done it yet though. I’ll give it a try
Q:
All of the images show the unit as being black, but in the product description/comparison area, it says that it is white! What color is it??

Answer: It is black. It is a great little smoker.
Answer: its black
Answer: color is black
Answer: it is black.
Answer: black
Answer: dimentions
Q:
Can this be converted to natural gas?
Answer: it does not come with a conversion kit but it could possibly be done. I don't think it would be cost effective.
Answer: I believe there are NG tips pkgd with the unit
Q:
What do you use for a water pan?
Answer: An ordinary pie pan works well. Be sure to empty & rinse it when done smoking, to avoid having it stink.
Answer: A cheap aluminum roasting pan filled with water. It also catches a lot of the grease.
Answer: If you need one use a dollar tree foil pan.
Answer: Aluminum foil drip pan from Walmart.
Answer: any square bowl I cut a square Gallen can off. still leaves room for wood chips.
Q:
How big a turkey can you get in this smoker?
Answer: This smoker can accommodate a 15 lb turkey, it may not have enough room to accommodate larger turkeys. - GHP Group Customer Support
Q:
does the water bowl catch all the grease, some models have a separate grease bowl, will any leak on patio floor
Answer: I have not had a problem with grease reaching floor. It does not have a separate grease bowl. Having said that, if you r a clean freak, you might want to consider putting a rubber mat in front of grill...smoking is a somewhat dirty business.
Answer: My experience so far has been that the water bowl catches most if not all of the grease. But just to be safe an absorbing pad may be a good idea if you are worried about the surface under your smoker
Answer: No it does not catch all of the grease. I use an aluminum pad on a lower shelf that I also use for wrapping.
Answer: This smoker has no water bowl so I added my own pan on the lower grate which does the job. Basically I went from 2 smaller bullet smokers to this one because ease of access to the smoking area levels and the charcoal area both having separate doors. Temp was easy to maintain and I really like it so far, just wish I had more time to use it! Buy it and Enjoy!
Answer: I haven't experienced any leakage at all. It would probably be a good idea to check the metal sides on the interior after 20 smoking cycles and see if there is any grease that may migrate down.
Answer: Yes it will leak. If you want to catch all of the grease you will need to put a larger pan on the bottom shelf.

Q:
Is that a water pan in the picture?
Answer: I just bought one of these for my son for Christmas. It is the charcoal model. He lives in a different city and just put it together. He said it does not have a water pan? Should it have a water pan or not?
Answer: Yes there is a water pan. If you smoke long and slow you will need to refill the pan a couple of times
Answer: Yes there is a porcelanized steel pan above the wood smoke box.
Answer: No! It does not come with the charcoal smoker. It is also not referenced or shown in the parts list in the manual.
Answer: Yes, holds about 2qts. You will love this smoker!
Answer: yes
Q:
El ahumador trabaja con gas natural ?
Answer: El fumador no trabaja con gas natural. Solo propano.
Answer: Funciona con gas LP
Q:
In a long smoke how often do you have to fill the water
Answer: I use a large steam table pan - holds a lot more water and catches a lot more grease (keeping your smoker clean). You can easily go 8+ hours with that. And then when you're done, just throw it away - no muss, no fuss. Just put a rack in on the lowest setting and put the pan on that.
Answer: I guess it depends on what you mean for a long smoke. You do not have to refill up to four hours.
Answer: I guess in an 8 hour smoke, you would have to fill it maybe 3 times. I don't usually fill it all the way up. Too hard to work with.
Answer: Depends on the humidity you want in the box. I did a 12 hour brisket, filled it in the beginning and topped it off 4-5 hours later and there was still a little left at the end
Answer: Each time it us empty.
Answer: Every couple of hours or so.
Product reviews of Dyna-Glo DGX780BDC-D 36" Vertical Charcoal Smoker
Jason Lesher : ... smoker a couple of days ago & I would like to say instructions were on point and I received ...
Just got this smoker a couple of days ago & I would like to say instructions were on point and I received all the parts unlike some previous reviews. Biggest problem I have right now is the tempatire gauge is beyond off by at least 20 degrees and this could seriously ruin a meal. My thermapro digital temperature which has worked great on my other 2 smokers never fails with reading the heat, so I know that’s not the problem. I’m reading 225 degrees on my thermapro and 200 on my smoker. This is a big issue and beyond not cool. 5 degrees I could ha sleep but I’m hitting a 20/25 degree difference which is. It acceptable.
jlayj : Excellent smoker for the money
I have been in the restaurant industry for 45 years and have been in several barbecue contests using commercial cookers and have won several trophies. I have been through several cookers including pellet smokers, (was a pellet cooker dealer for several years) charcoal, and wood cookers. This smoker so far, has turned out to be a very good piece of equipment for the money and for home use. I do suggest using wood chunks instead of chips and to add new chunks after about 3 hours. I also suggest to replace the water pan with a commercial 4” half size stainless counter pan and only fill with boiling water. You will have to use the top wires on the water pan rack to clear the wood box. A pan can be purchased online from Webstaurant for around $10. I smoked 2 large pork butts for 20 hours at 220-225and didn’t wrap, didn’t baste or spray, and they were shiny with juice when I took them out with an internal temp of 195. Pulled great and the bone wasn’t bleached white which is a sign of being steamed.
A. Fletcher : More air leaks than a screen door
Really like the design. Application, not so much. Biggest thing is that you cannot shut this thing down, it’s got more air leaks than a screen door. Let’s start at the stack. You’ve got a 2 1/4” x2 1/4” I D stack with a butterfly plate that’s too small and does not seal tight. Second is your side vents. This is built with thin gauge sheet metal so you have a bit of oil canning on the sides ( sides will pop in and out if you push ) so slide vents will not seal effectively and you can see daylight when closed. Maybe instead of 4 shoulder screws and nuts try spot welding a z bar on bottom then a screw on bar at the top so you have an actual track to slide vents and add rigidity. The bottom line is that if you need to shut the fire down you need to cut off oxygen. During seasoning process it pegged thermometer, I shut all vents off, to no avail, cooled coals down with my beer and temperature went right back up with everything shut down. So at this point I’m doing modifications to seal things off. Don’t see this lasting 10 years like my charbroil did.
Ted : Great smoker, great price.
Some reviewers indicated temp control was an issue and because of the suggestions in the reviews (applying strip seal around the doors) not only helped temp control but also retaining the smoke efficiently. I honestly love the design of this smoker not only because of the features incorporated but the look itself. The negative reviews notwithstanding, this smoker gets the job done, and considering the cost, you end up ahead of the transaction.
Alan : Amazing Smoker!!
So far so great! This smoker works really well. I used to have an electric smoker and I had trouble keeping it hot during winter, that's why I got this one with 2 burners. On my second attempt, I decided to use wood chunks and to pre-light the chunks with a blowtorch. That did it, I had smoke right from the start and the temperature went to 225F very quickly, and to keep it there I almost have to only use 1 burner (I'm currently in TN and it's early fall) otherwise it gets too hot.
Matthew S. : Easy to Cook/Regulate and Best Bang for your Buck!
Can I just say, WOW! When looking for a new smoker there was a lot of research to be done. This is obviously an investment and you want something that will last. Dyna Glo had outstanding ratings compared to many other companies out there, and at a competitive price point. Within the first week of assembly, I've already used it twice, with ease. I had initially contemplated getting the smaller model, but I am glad I went with the 36"!
Now to address Pros/Cons.
Pros: 1) Amazing cooking space capacity! 2) THE BEST SEAL EVER! I didn't have any smoke coming out other than the chimney on top! (Resulting in great flavor) 3) Easy to assemble 4) Regulating Temperature: once in the proper environment, away from heavy wind I could maintain 250-275 no problem for some amazing wings. 5) Minimal clean up with proper preparation. Putting a layer of aluminum foil on the bottom cooking tray as well as wrapping the water pan help minimize any cleaning after cooking.
Cons: 1) One leg is slightly shorter than the others, so I need to put a small wedge under the leg...not a big bother. 2) There is no insulation in the cooking chamber so heavy wind can impact your ability to regulate temperature. 3)
Tips and tricks: I used high heat silicone around the perimeter of the top lid where a very small gap was still present. The top is welded on the corners so this makes the chamber 100% closed. Make sure to use a mixture of woodchips and chunks to maintain your smoke. If you need to flip anything during a cook, BE PREPARED to take the whole tray out and shut the door while you flip your food! This will help with regulating temperature! You don't want to leave your door open for more than 30-60 seconds. I tried soaked and dry woodchips...didn't seem to notice a difference between the two. With two cooks down I can say that this regulates temperature very well, creates a VERY nice amount of smoke and flavor and made an outstanding bark on some chicken. Crispy wings are the best!
GEC : Not to bad
This is a pretty good smoker. 3 of the river nuts on one leg weren’t riveted and were loose in the box. A few nuts fixed it but it was quite difficult getting the nuts one because of a tight fit. I’m pretty experienced with smoking. I had issues getting good smoke. I found that leaving the cover of the chip box fixed this. Temperature control is pretty good and with 2 burners you have a lot more flexibility. At this moment I have 2 10lb pork butts a large cast iron Dutch oven of baked beans and 4 pork loins going. I think the smaller smoker they offer wouldn’t be large enough but the medium size is perfect. My one tip would be fire it up and play with it for a few hours before you actually start smoking meat
Update: I found that wood chunks put of better smoke and last longer than chips.
Katherine L. Carter : Not what was shown and a major flaw in the side holes for the trays
The holes for the side inserts that hold the trays..smoke box and water tray...Some were missing while others were not aligned. The smoker chip box is not as displayed. The picture shows a cast iron chip box while what we received was a painted or porcelain covered box. I can't see reordering because there is a definite design or mfg flaw where the holes are placed so we will have to UN-assemble the smoker and try to repack, send it back for a refund or modify the smoker by drilling additional holes in the proper location. The overall smoker so far we like what it looks like and can see a good potential....But
Mad Buyer : Smoker with lots of cooking space, tons of smoke and well built
I bought this to go with an outdoor island we're building as a stand alone next to the grill and side burner. Did a seasoning burn the first day and just a dry rub on wings the next.....OMG. Have since done country ribs again with a dry rub with great results. Being in Florida the outdoor kitchen and smoker are awesome for cooking fish without any smell in the house. I think the price, quality and results are well worth the price. I can't imagine needing anything for a backyard cooking experience. Those bigger smokers are for the more dedicated almost competitve smoker/BBQ folks.
THOMAS P MIRTH : Great smoker
Great smoker solidly built easy to assemble . I like the fact that it has two burners I think this helps tremendously when producing smoke. Definitely have to use finer shredded wood chips as opposed to bigger pieces that you would use in a traditional smoker . They don’t burn well. So far very pleased with this smoker used it a couple times with much success. True test this weekend doing ribs and chicken at same time. Prior to this smoker I have a bulitt which is awesome and an a electric Bradley smoker which I did not like and sold it and bought this one
James : Great smoker. Great price.
Works great. Little bit of time to assemble but a solid smoker. Already used multiple times and temperature seems to stay consistent so I’m not having to constantly change it. Thermometer gauge doesn’t reflect what my i Weber remote thermometer says inside. About 25 degrees off if I had to guess. Otherwise it’s a great design with the two door feature. I did notice I’m better off wrapping my wood chips in tinfoil than letting it sit in the pan that came with it. Last, I did add high temp foam tape to get a better seal. I suggest doing it first time you install, especially if it’s winter months where you live. Otherwise the tape won’t stick if applied in cold temps.
Michigan : Can't say enough about the quality of this smoker
I have purchased several propane smokers over the years, from the typical brands. This is by far the best unit I have ever used. I really like propane units, however there are several problems that come with them. Temp control and drafty boxes are the two biggest. If you can get a quality burner and a fairly tight unit, it is very difficult to top a smoker unit powered by propane. This Dyna-Glo unit is tight and has a cast burner that has great adjustability. The "moisture and grease management system" as they call it, is simply a designed funneling system on the inside of the box that directs moisture and grease into the water pan. This is beyond useful. Most smokers let the moisture and grease drip down the sides and onto the bottom of the smoker near the burner. This has always been my biggest complaint with this style of smoker as it causes the bottom to rust and rot out prematurely AND causes grease fires in the box. Time will tell, but I have high hopes for this design and I'm glad a company finally implemented it. Assembly was easy and well instructed. A few screws and you're pretty much set. Top to bottom quality on all the parts. High marks all the way.
Molly : Value
Fast delivery ???? easy set up took me and my son about 30 minutes, gonna test out and will up date after I do my first smoke And I did get the charcoal model
Update so as you can see the smoke is not staying in so I have to get some sealer but other wise work good
magnolia mama : Husband's favorite toy!
My husband loves this! He has used it 4 times in the month since he got it. He has smoked 2 Boston butts, a chicken, a turkey, a turkey breast, and country style pork ribs. They all came out great. He had a little trouble maintaining the temperature when the ambient temperature was in the low 20s and there was a strong wind. He put up a wind break and the problem was solved. Despite keeping it covered when not in use, there is some bubbling in the paint. He has had that happen with every grill he has owned, though.
LKSchwartz : Very good product
I was a bit concerned with the reviews that spoke to poor packaging, misaligned locations for screws, etc. But I found the product was just fine when it arrived, packaging, no dents. The parts were well packed and everything was included as described in the instructions. It would be nice if there were a couple of the small parts packaged extra, my fat fingers dropped a couple of screws/nuts but that is on me. I'm retired and a stroke victim and put it together by myself. I do wish it had wheels to move it easier but again my fault for not thinking about it before I bought it. I've used it to smoke chicken and salmon both came out well. I like the product and glad I bought it.
BRIAN : Superior design and easy to assemble!
I just took delivery of this smoker and it was a breeze to assemble. Best of all, it is well designed, which is WAY more than I can say for the Masterbuilt smoker I'm replacing. There is NO danger of burning up the ignition wire on this model. The Masterbuilt unit had the electronic ignition wire next to the burner input and toasted the wire the first time I used it. Their customer support was good and sent me a new ignition wire, but that one got burned up the first time I used that one. I contacted them to inform them of this issue, but I was ignored. This Dyna-Glo lit the first time easy as can be. The Masterbuilt lasted for several years, but I had to light manually every time. Moreover, the supply line was too close to the flame which scared me. None of that is going on with the Dyna-Glo unit. I'm looking forward to many years of use with this unit. Bravo to Dyna-Glo for taking the time to engineer the unit properly!!
Colette M Diotte : Great Value Smoker
This is my first smoker, so you are going to get a rookie's report on this unit. I did season my unit prior per owner's manual. This is the Charcoal version. I smoked a 9lb pork shoulder, and it took about 12hours at 250°. Here is what I learnt: Negatives - take the advice on here and buy the smoker seal. I bot LavaLock here on Amazon. This unit does NOT have a water pan, and it really needs it to control the temperature. It's an easy fix - buy one and set it where the chip box goes. Purchase a digital thermometer. The thermometer on my unit is off by about 75°. You cannot leave this unit for more than two hours before it needs refueling. Personally, I like tinkering with it so no big deal to me. Positives - Great Value. Love that I can refuel it without opening the cooking space. Fairly easy to assemble - no damage on delivery. Large capacity with moveable shelves - solid construction.
The pork shoulder turned out amazing with a beautiful smoke ring. Super happy with my purchase, but I have no point of comparison. I did not want to spend more that $150 on my first smoker.
I hope this helps!
wheeltime : Easy to assemble and set up
Easy to assemble. Came packaged well. Did our seasoning for 45 minutes and that was interesting to see the smoke work through the unit. The temp gauge seemed to work well on the smoker and held the temp during seasoning process. Nice big bins for the wood chips and water bowl. We will smoke a roast tomorrow using cherry wood chips. Then we will write more.
John Lavoie : Just like the last one i had before, but better.
I had the larger version of this smoker about 8 years ago, which worked great by the way. This smoker is better suited for the type of cooking that i do now, which is more for a small batch than large get-together. This smoker is easier to cook with due to its smaller burner. The larger smoker has a hard time keeping the temperature steady, this one has no trouble. This smoker has just enough room and shelf space to get the job done, don't hesitate to buy this little smoker. Gas consuption is very reasonable on this unit due to the small burner and tight seal around the doors.
Martin : Excellent delivery, solid and well built, ease of use
First impressions:
1. Shout out to the delivery drivers - carried up stairs as this is on the balcony - thanks guys. 2. Heavy duty box, no scratches or dings on unit, read through manual and instructions. 3. Contained everything needed to put together, all screws and instructions to assemble, grab a Phillips, easy. 4. Unit has nice, heavy doors with gaskets on doors, heavy duty handles, nice flat black design. 5. Easy to set up, sprayed with Canola oil all racks, water pan, and interior of unit and doors. 6. Connected propane tank, ignited right up, no leaks, flames on both burners. 7. Smoked at around 250 for couple hours to season, nice smoke, easy to adjust dampers for temp control. 8. Wiped interior down of extra oil this morning, wiped exterior, great looking smoker. Stoked. 9. Fired right up again, seasoning unit again for a couple hours...teenager asked, "What are you smoking?" 10. To be continued...

Kelly B. : Good Smoker
So far I've smoked a couple of pork butts and ribs and am impressed. The smoker seems fairly sturdy, racks are very nice and solid, and I love the seals on the doors. I also like the deeper, solid wood tray. At first I used wood chips soaked in water and the results weren't great - most of them would just sit in the box and not burn - but I've started using chunks instead of chips and that works really well. Chunks are a lot cheaper and last longer with more consistent smoke.
The water pan is laughably small. I don't know why they designed it like that, because it's too shallow so you'll run out on a long cook, and it only covers roughly half the bottom so all your drippings will end up in the bottom of the smoker. I solved this by using a full-size foil steam table tray. It covers most of the bottom, so it catches all the drippings and keeps the smoker cleaner. It holds close to two gallons, so can go most of a cook without refilling, and best of all, it's disposable! I set a rack up in the lowest setting and put the pan on that - you can also just set it on the water/wood holder, but it's harder to access that way. For a smaller cook, you can put a half-size tray right in where the water pan is supposed to go - it fits fine and holds enough water for something small.
There's some minor rusting on one of the burners, so I'm a little concerned about that, but we'll see how it does long term.
Over all, I'm very happy with the smoker - it's got a large capacity (you can do 6 pork butts, tight, but they'll fit) and seems pretty stable temp wise. Price was great.
MarkB07 : This needs to be your first smoker.
I bought this a few years ago and have been a regular user of this. I even bought one for a family member. Weighing all things equally this is a great product for the money. I have research other smokers over the years to see if there is a better replacement, but haven't found one yet for the money. Pros: --It's lightweight so you can move it from storage to cooking location. --The smoker box is much larger than other models, which is kind of the whole point. You can get large and small pieces in there for a longer smoke. --The water dish (temp regulator) is accessible and easy to maintain during the smoking process --Rack levels are easily moved to accommodate a variety of items. I never had problem fitting a bunch of food in there. --Very roomy inside. I can do 2 racks of ribs, 5 large chicken breasts and bacon, all in one smoke. I've never NOT had room. --Temp gauge is accurate easy read.
Cons: --I broke one of the handles pretty easily. I shut my garage door on it, which may not be recommended but it broke a little too easily for me. I got a replacement easily but that kinda sucked --The smoke leaks out of the door to easily. This is offset by the huge smoker box, which kicks off a lot of smoke, but i would like to see tighter seals on the doors. --The lid on the smoker box. I've seen a few people comment on this and they are right. It's annoying that it just sits on the box without any real purpose. To be honest I'm not sure if it's needed, but I imagine it makes the wood burn slower. It's not a deal breaker but it is annoying.
That's my feedback. This was my first smoker, and I have found it easy to use/learn with. The food turns out great, which is the whole point. I've seen much more expensive smokers that lack some of the benefits of this one (large smoker box) so like I said, for the money, this one is a clear winner.
Cheryl M : Best smoker I have ever had!
I just recently purchased the Dyna-glo smoker. First of all, it is the best smoker I have ever owned, and I have owned three. The one thing that is amazing is the temperature control as well as the construction of the burners. On my old smokers the burners would go out on windy days, not with this model. The other thing that was beyond belief was the customer service and support I received from Dyna-Glo. The original ignitor was defective, and the company replaced it right away. The ignitor being defective did not hamper the use of the smoker, as I was able to light it with a lighter. AMAZING PRODUCT!!!! I just can't say enough about this. Oh and one more thing, the warranty is one of the best that I have found. WAY TO GO AMAZON AND DYNA-GLO!!!
Jaeger : Good bang for buck.
Love it, the wood box just sips on chips over the course of a few hours. With both burners on the lowest setting it will sit at 250. which is fine if you're new to smoking or just have that much meat in there. I prefer to smoke at 225F so I had to play with it a bit on one burner to get there. Some parts were bent, one of the rack handles used to hold your water pan and wood box was bent and I had to spend an extra moment to get it to look more like the other one. The rails where the drip pans are supposed to slide into were just completely bent out of shape and unusable. I could probably fix it with a pair of needle nose pliers, but I took the easy route and just got a couple of pans to go underneath. Good bang for buck as smokers can easily skyrocket in price. I picked this up for $250 and it performs so much better than a smoker I made out of a filing cabinet for about $100. Assembly was easy enough, but can go over an hour depending on how handy you are. If you can assemble furniture then you won't have problems assembling this.
Update 2-17-2019 Doesn't seem to work well in the cold, it needs more insulation as it puts off a great amount of heat, but then bleeds as well so it can be difficult to smoke depending on weather conditions.
Jarvas : Giant useless piece of crap!
Delivered without instructions or any assembly hardware... Waited nearly a week for my hardware and they still didn't send assembly instructions. Fortunately I was able to put it together without issue only to find defective parts. All and all poor quality control on all levels. For all my trouble, the third party seller threw me 15 dollars off on my purchase! Wow, thanks.... Update. Two weeks later and now the knobs controlling gas level, so you can actually effectively adjust the flame and control heat have stopped working. Turn them all you want it stays at it's lowest level. As you can imagine with a box this size there is nowhere near enough heat at it's lowest. I now own a giant pile of useless metal crap. I will be seeking a complete refund and will never purchase another product from this maker. If a full refund isn't granted I will assure you I will never purchase any products from the third party seller either! Wish I could give no stars! Update... Third party seller was more then helpful with a complete refund. I have full faith in the seller but would still suggest against this unit
JW : Good all around smoker and fairly affordable for the size and performance.
So far, so good. Drip tray should be larger, as the drippings get all over the bottom past the tray on the sides and creates quite a clean up chore. I use a disposable drip tray now that fits the whole bottom so as to avoid the clean up mess. Also, burners do not have as fine of control as they need as the smoker can spike up in temperature fairly quickly with just a nudge on a dial. Drip pan tray and Smoker tray could use better rails as it can be easy to dump them if you don't pay attention when pulling them out to add water and/or wood.
It acceptable.
wyatt : Too Hot! It cooks your meat
It is unbelievably Hot! It will cook your meat before your chips even begin smoking. On the lowest setting, it is 275 - 300 degree F. It is an oven that you can bake bread in if you turn it up to medium or above. I put a piece of expanded metal across the burner opening and purchased an electric hot plate from Amazon and converted it to be electric. It works great with an electric hot plate. I absolutely do not recommend buy this. Buy the electric version; I bet it would work much better.
DelaBob : Great Smoker
I have been using this smoker for almost three years and it works great. I have owned many smokers over the past 30 years and this one is he best of all. I have smoked many brisket, dozens of racks of ribs, whole chickens, Boston Butts, sausages, etc. to perfection with it. I use chunk mesquite in the wood box, which lasts longer and gives more smoke than wood chips. The only difficulty with this smoker is with the temperature control. I could not turn down the propane far enough to lower the cooking temperature to 225 degrees. So, I installed an auxiliary gas valve in the supply line to further control the propane flow. Since then I've been able to maintain 225 degrees consistently.
Mike : Most Perfect Temperature Control
This is a fantastic smoker, hands down. Have been using different smokers (propane) for 25 plus years. Last 2 smokers have been Masterbuilt. They were good. My last Masterbuilt smoker actually started on fire while smoking a brisket. Have never had this happen before. So, checked out reviews and went with the Dyna-Glo 36" Vertical. Yesterday, smoked two racks of ribs and whole chicken. Had neighbors and family over for late lunch. Huge hit with all. The chip pan and water pan are extra large. No adding chips or water necessary. Beside the temperature control knob, there are 3 dampers to control temp. 2 on each side and the chimney vent on top. I was able to maintain an even 225 degrees through 5 hours of smoking. So easy. My only recommendation for improving this smoker: The double doors leak smoke. Purchase a BBQ smoker self-stick gasket for both doors. It worked great and the smoke flavor was fantastic. Clean up is very easy. Make sure you line the water tray with aluminum foil. This makes for near effortlessly clean up. Overall, this is a great smoker for $200. Highly recommend.
vincent proctor : If your serious about smoking but not about a $1,000.00+ smoker. Then I like this one.
Wonderful gas smoker. Very sizable, cooking for a family of 4 plus friends/neighbors I would go broke before I fill the smoker with meat. Sizable basket for wood chips. Will take small wood chunks. Sizable enough water pan that seems coated for easy clean up. Sips propane at smoking temperatures of 225-250. I dislike how thin the side walls and doors are, you lose lots of heat... Recommend buying rock wool or some other insulation to wrap the smoker in esp if you live in a colder climate. Additionally as with most smokers the stock temp gauge is inaccurate, youll need a separate thermometer which brings me to my next point. Since it is a gas grill and it has traditional knobs you have to spend a SIGNIFICANT amount of time adjusting the flame height and side vents to get and maintain an accurate temp... I dont mind this, gives me an excuse to sit outside and drink beer but this smoker is not a set it and forget it. Set up was pretty easy, just have a broom or vacuum handy since the foam gets everywhere! Dyna-Glo could improve this grill by adding a gas gauge to the stock hose.
M. Smith : Not worth the money!.... cheap metal parts and racks ..also it's only a 22inch box.. not 36inch...
It "looks" very nice, and seems to be wider than some. but Not worth the money in my opinion ( at $300).... And I got it when it was $50 off.... Disappointed the moment I took it out of the Box. ( in my opinion, it shouldn't have more than a $200 price tag ) ... (and should not advertised as a "36in wide smoker"...) Cheap everything, nothing fits or lines up properly ........thermostat does not read properly. ..Way hotter than it says, needed a digital Thermometer to not over cook.
Wood chip Box wont smoke at low tem
It's not 36" (only a 22 - 24 inch box) so if you trying to cook large pieces of meat, it still doesn't work. (32in wide handle to handle)
* This might be good for making beef jerky ..
Gregg : It does is advertised it is a great smoker that
It does is advertised it is a great smoker that does a great job with all types of meats. I enjoy the fact that I don’t have to continually watch the smoker is the wood been inside your ass for hours when you do need to refill it the separate door makes it easy to pull the bin out refill it and put it right back in to the smoker not losing any of the heat through the large doors. I’ve used it for five times now and each time we have a nice smoke ring With the appropriate mount of smoke flavor. I would highly recommend it and it was a great price.
Amazon Customer : Save your money...they cut too many corners
Can’t get it to run at a low temp (below 230F), and everything falls apart quite easily. The rails for holding racks, water pan, and wood chips are very flimsy. They mere hook into holes on the sides of the smoker and fall right off - especially when adding more wood or checking & adding liquid. It’s kind of a damper (see what I did there?) when you pull out the water pan, it slips off the rail spilling water into the wood chips, and then the rail falls off while trying to put the pan back on. Very poor support method. All food racks are also on these flimsy rails, although they aren’t being checked all the time.

Johnny Gee : Durable and looks exactly whats shown
We tried playing with the temperature control with no real impact. We also tried using natural charcoal, but it just burns too hot and to fast. Kingston charcoal brickets worked better - slower burn. Also, do not fill the whole tray with charcoal - only half is needed to get to smoking range. Since, we used less charcoal in the beginning, we have to use chimney to add more hot coals when we put our food in.
DAVID SPONSEL : All smoking take a little time, but it's worth it.
Works better than grilling. I added a digital tempter gauge with remote. & set of wheels. I added a side shelf to hold the gauge. I added a gravity level auto water fill jug. My wife loves it. Door temperature gauge is worthless. Steaks to 160 F international temperature. Turkey to 165F international temperature. For 20 minutes to kill parasites & germs
michael bright : Great smoker read reviews
Love the smoker. Read all of the reviews first. It does need some modification. It needs a seal around the doors and you need some high temperature silicone to seal up all of the screws, thermometer and any pin holes on the welds of the hinges. Smoke will escape in all of those areas and make it difficult for you to see what's going on. Let alone affect cooking time. It also need to water pan that you can accomplish with a cake pan a foil disposable pan you have quite a few different options. I also looked at the water pan from the gas version and you can buy that pan separately from the company. The Disposable foil pan works great and cost next to nothing. You also don't have to clean it when you're done you can just throw it away. After those modifications it's an outstanding smoker and it does hold its temperature quite well for this type of smoker.
Zak : Temperature never stays on the desired level. Disappointed
The good in this smoker is : big and can take lots of meet. Looks nice. Have two burners. The bad: temperature keep change and never stay on the desired temperature. The chimney looks crooked. I used it for brisket and I have to stay next to the smoker for 12 hour. I got great brisket but staying next to the smoker is not easy and if I knew that earlier I would've bought the charcoal one because it gives better smoking and also need continuous watch. I like how big and nice looking but I hate the temperature changing constantly
bkpdx : Not much smoke at low temp.
This smoker is really tough to smoke at low temperatures, it is great at cooking with some smoke. If you are looking to get a smoke flavor from low temp smoking this isn't the one to use. With the flame on its lowest the smoke isn't intense enough, if the flame gets turned up for adequate smoke it cooks too fast even with all of the dampers open.

Wade Guisbert : Regardless at being a neophyte at "smoking" this went flawlessly!
For the most part, well made (wasn't crazy about the fit of the wood chip holder, kind of wobbly), everything else was satisfactory. I can't remember the smoker my son has, but this had better construction, and the seal was tight on the door! I would strongly recommend buying this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07477NMF4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Jeff Brown : Great purchase!
I have had my smoker for about 2 weeks now and absolutely love it. It is an upgrade from my old smoker. I have been enjoying the extra room with this big cabinet. It looked empty with 6 whole chickens on it. The 2 burners are nice and help produce some great smoke from the old seasoned oak i have stacked which we cut chips from. Not sure i had very high expectations for this smoker but it really surprised me. I think it is 1 of the best online purchases that I have made. The cover is great quality as well. I was very happy that I purchased it.
murfergirl : Perfect for a small patio!
Directions weren't as easy to read as some are, but overall, I'm very happy with my purchase! It's lightweight, easy to move, and works well. Thermostat works great, but I wish there was insulation (or something similar) around the edges of the doors- you lose a lot of heat/smoke in that area!

We tried playing with the temperature control with no real impact. We also tried using natural charcoal, but it just burns too hot and to fast. Kingston charcoal brickets worked better - slower burn. Also, do not fill the whole tray with charcoal - only half is needed to get to smoking range. Since, we used less charcoal in the beginning, we have to use chimney to add more hot coals when we put our food in.
michael bright : Great smoker read reviews
Mark : I'd buy again.
Easy to keep a constant temperature. Doors are relatively sealed. Not perfect but satisfactory. Install was easy. I'm glad I went propane. I recommend this smoker to others.
