What is the tool used to squash the pennies called?

Answer: Hi Lorie, we call the tool a penny punch. It doesn't squash the pennies, it punches holes in the edges or center of them, so they can be joined with split rings. I hope that answers your question.

Answer: This is a question we are sometimes asked. The short answer is "no". The long answer is that the statutes concerning tampering with money are concerned with fraud and counterfeiting. We went so far as to check on this with the US Treasury. It is fine to use pennies to build fishing lures, just as it is fine to press pennies into various medallions using the machines as are found at tourist attractions across the country.

Would this work to fish for trout in a stream? Or, are pennies too big for that?

Answer: Hi, Great question! The penny lures are great for small trout like brookies or any fish that will hit flash. The holographic stickers are deadly for this. When the fish hit the flash, they hit the hook, and if you are fast yet gentle with your set, more often than not you can hook them up even though they don't get the whole lure in their mouth. We stream fish them to trout all the time.

Does this come with a booklet with suggestions for what styles of lure to make? What species have you caught on this lure? What size are the rings?

Answer: This was given as a Christmas gift. They loved it and had a great time making the lures. Waiting to try them in the spring.

Nothing but good things to say about this product. Had great success with it ice fishing, you can build a wide variety of lures with this if you are willing to get creative. Can also be done as a project with kids to get them excited about fishing. I ordered an additional set after my son and I had such a good time putting a number of lures together.

Used with a cubscout group kids and parents loved it... I pre punched the holes to save time and good thing as the hole punch stripped out and died towards end. If I could have ordered a second set after seeing the first and had it in time I would have awesome project.

Steve R : Great Idea - Kit contents need more thought

I bought these kits to use as a 4-H craft. The kids loved them and overall they were a hit! They were easy to build - teen helpers/older kids punched the holes and attached the split rings/hooks and the younger kids picked out their decals, etc. The contents of the kit needs adjusting though. We used the split rings from 3 kits to complete approx. 2 kits worth of penny lures. There were enough treble hooks to make 6 kits of penny lures. The penny punching jigs only lasted long enough to punch about 50 pennies each before the threads wore down (we were very careful not to 'over twist' the jig). For the price, I was hoping to be able to use the jigs more since there were plenty of hooks and decals leftover.
