Are these lures the correct size for catching mahi mahi, bass and redfish? i may buy these as a gift for a fisherman but don't fish myself.

Answer: Hi, Thanks for your question. These lures are probably on the small side of what we would choose for Mahi Mahi or Redfish, and as a result we have never fished to them with the Muddy Minnow. However, they have been used successfully many times to catch Bass, particularly in the spring and fall.

Does it come with paint?

Answer: Hi, thank you for your question. Advanced lure builders do paint these lures, however our kit does not include paint as most of these hobbyists have their own methods and preferences. For those not wanting to paint, the kit includes a dozen different kinds of decal patterns, 108 decals in total (sides and tops).

Do the lures have rattles in them

Answer: Thank you for your question. The lures do not have rattles. We have reports of some enterprising individuals that have placed rattles inside the mold when casting, but we don't know much beyond that, such as how they centered the rattle within the mold, etc. It is an interesting idea, one we will experiment with ourselves.

What age group is this suitable for? Is it something that a 10 year old could do with some supervision?

Answer: The age best suited would be the teenage group. This kit requires mixing and filling molds, and of course putting on treble hooks. But after the first assembly under strict supervision the workmanship and value will be appreciated.

Answer: Yes, for sure. A great kit. Get some little pliers for managing the hooks.

Do these float or sink, stock without weights added to the mold or hooks? I don't want a lure that sinks like a rock.

Answer: Once made these minnows float, I have googled how get them to sink to certain depths etc. and there is youtube tutorials on casting them with weights in the body

Answer: Hi, great question. Muddy minnows are a slow sink, similar to a Rapala countdown if no wieght is added.

What type paint is best for these molded lures?

Answer: Generally most acrylic and enamel paints seem to work well.

Answer: You don't need any paint the kit comes with colorful decals that wraps around the hardened mold.

I did not see the lure-lip depth mentioned. what is the lip running depth? i am looking for 7 ft (like a shad rap 05).

I got the kit for Christmas and got started right away on making my first bait. The instructions are clear and to the point. The kit comes with almost everything you need. Sand paper and clear coat are all that the kit was lacking. Quality hooks. The resin dries quickly, and there are some very effective baitfish patterns to use. Can’t wait to get them out in the water!

We got this for my stepson for Christmas, and he and my husband love it! They’ve spent hours making lures! At 14 my stepson can manage it on his own, but he did need a little help getting set up.
It’s a great starter kit, and very fun!

I purchased this kit awhile back and just got to trying it out. It was really neat to make my own lures. The molding process was easy once I got started. The decals are a little tricky to stick on but the second and third ones go much better than the first. I hope to paint some of my own patterns and try them too. A good deal considering the cost savings over buying lures at the local sports warehouse. All in all, a fun way to spend time while the 49ers got stomped. I gave a couple to my friend and he says they have been working good for him and wants his own kit.
