Answer: I use the mats under my venison to avoid touching the grids. This requires turning the meat half way through the cycle but clean up is very easy. Great machine.
Answer: The trays are very easy to clean and any time I've had food stick to them, I just let them soak for awhile in warm, soapy dishwater. And yes, occasionally some things stick to the tray, but it's an extremely low %. When I'm preparing the trays for the dehydrator, I turn the fruits or veggies so the stickiest side is up.

Plus you can do much more produce in the dehydrator than the oven. With your oven, you are guessing with everything. Please get this dehydrator, don't waste your food!

Answer: There is a texture to the plastic. It is all black plastic, but depending on how the light hits it it can have a SLIGHT grey effect. The studio lights accentuates the grey effect greatly. In normal house lights, it looks very black with a texture to it.
Answer: The " Crusty" appearance in photo on the surface of the top of the dehydrator is the texture of the plastic as manufactured by Excalibur. If I were to make a guess this texture was chosen instead of a gloss or highly polished to limit abrasion scratch marks caused by habitually using flat surface as temporary storage of plastic trays, kitchen tools etc. The machine itself is AWESOME with or without textured top surface.

Answer: You can make yogurt in all of the Excalibur Dehydrators because their trays are removable to make room for a glass jar. Make your yogurt recipe and put the mixture in glass jars with a lids on. Remove the dehydrator shelves and put the jar on the bottom of the dehydrator, set the dehydrator at 105 degrees for 8-10 hours. The Dehydrator will maintain the 105 temperature.
Answer: Sorry but at 105 most of the beneficial bacteria will be dead. Some might still be alive and it will give you a poor quality yogurt but you really want around 90 to make great yogurt.

Answer: I prefer the old fashioned timer and I've read on different sites about failure of digital/computerized timers on these dehydrators. Maybe I'm old fashioned but always prefer non computerized appliances.

Answer: I don't know. Perhaps it is true and the knob timer is geared and will run without power but buying just a timer to do so would be less expensive than buying the dehydrater which will not dehydrate if there is no electricity.
Answer: No the timers don't work without electricity. The timers run your temperature control and fan shut off time. Hopefully it is mostly dry if electricity goes out. I made a outdoor solar dryer just in case with a manual timer...hope that helps.

I wanted a dehydrator that had good ratings. Well this one may be good but for the price it should have been in good working order. Timer is off by two hours. timer is a must. For the price timer should work. Ordered another one and it had the same problem. If this was a garage sale find that would have been okay. Sent both back and will look for something else. When I received the second one the packaging was awful. I look like one that had been sent back from someone else. Nothing was in a package. All corners were broke. I was so disappointed. Thought I was getting the best.

This is a well thought out, great, valuable product. If you work for a living, and occasionally put food in your mouth, you deserve to purchase this product. This is a great item. It stands above the crowd with: (1.) variable heat; (2.) timer; (3.) excellent tray system, easy wash up in either the sink of dish washer; (4.) includes plastic mesh tray liners! (this is a G R E A T feature). I've used it for everything from drying fruit (peaches thru watermelon) and making South African BILTONG, it makes it all appear effortless. It does all the work, I get all the credit.

I have the 3000 model that has the timer and temperature knobs. I’ve had this for around 15 years. It gets lots of use as we live on a small farm. I dry fruit, veggies, Jerky, even tried yogurt once. AND it’s made in the USA (or at least used to be).

I saw a couple people giving this a 1 star review for being damaged in shipping. Really?? Send it back and get another one knuckleheads! It's not the manufacturers fault it was damaged in shipping!

Would have given it five stars instead of four except for the fact that it was missing the two screws on the left side that held the fan grate in place. Because of this the fan was hitting it. I corrected the problem myself by taking the back off and rounding up two screws and washers to secure the grate.

The first one I received had a factory defect but the Excalibur people sent me out another one and I received it "next day"...awesome customer service. So far I have only made beef jerky, but it was great and I didn't even have to tend to it.

First run, dehydrating sunflower seeds, this item sounds like a rattle trap and can be heard from anywhere in our large home.
Tightened all the screws, tried putting a shim under one foot to see if introducing torque in the frame would help. No dice. There is no reason a unit like this should be so loud.
Seems like decent quality otherwise. May have to send it back based on noise levels alone.

Arrived well packed and quick shipping. I have only got a chance to use it once. I think dehydrating will be a learning curve with altitude and humidity variances. But, I am confident this was a good purchase over the round type of dehydrators. Was nice not to have to rotate the trays. It is a little on the louder side though. It was the pitch that sent my husbands hearing aides crazy as I set it up in the kitchen/living room area. I will move it to garage next time so he won’t hear it. Product is durable and worth the money. The book and tongs a nice extra. I did purchase the stronger silicon liners also. The ones that come with it, probably work fine, but the thicker ones I think will last a lot longer.

I love how it dries , so easy and fast but.. temp control doesn’t really change with the dial and the rattling sound the door makes drives me nuts .. you can try to adjust the door but it just vibrates back to rattling position..???? I have the see through door 9 tray.

I just love my Excalibur dehydrator! I have had 2 different brand dehydrators before this one and they didn't come close to comparing to this beauty. The major differences that make this one #1 in my book are; 1) They polyscreen trays. Mose foods don't have to be put on a mesh liner because the screens have small holes. I do use the mesh liners (sold separately) for fruit leathers or things that'll end up very small after drying. 2) It is SOOO quiet. Compared to the previous two I had. This one has a gentle hum. 3) The clear door! Love to be able to see everything I am drying. 4) And last is the speed of drying and efficiency. Much faster then my others and no need to rotate the trays. Hands down if you have the money get this one! I can't wait to put it to major use this summer with fresh goodies from my garden and for preparing dried meals for camping and hiking.

(this is a G R E A T feature). I've used it for everything from drying fruit (peaches thru watermelon) and making South African BILTONG, it makes it all appear effortless. It does all the work, I get all the credit.

I love this dehydrator! I have had mine for 4 years now and it still works great! I love all of the settings and especially the timer that shuts it off when they are done so you don't overdry. I was drying every day all day and was burning through those little round kind two per year. I finally bought this one and have never regretted it.

Love this dehydrator. The delivery was frustrating. The first one made it to Portland UPS and got lost or was missing. A second one was ordered and arrived within a week. After it arrived i started using it immediately and it is very efficient and easy to use.

When I purchased this product I thought the door on the front loading side would be glass but it is not and the door has to be assembled. The trays do come with the plastic grid liners but be prepared to wash them and the trays by hand because they were too tall to go in my dishwasher. All that being said, this thing is amazingly simple and fast and made my yearly job of making venison jerky a snap! Overall, I am very pleased with it and would recommend it to others looking to upgrade from the old style stacking dehydrators.

The trays were warped and too narrow to fit inside the dehydrator. They would not stay on alignment because they could not reach the rails. One tray was tossed-in outside of the dehydrator because of this mess. This package looked like pieces and parts were thrown together as an attempt to dump a bunch of mismatched garbage. NOT impressed that it is "made in the USA." For nearly $400, I was horrified that this crap would be unloaded by amazon.
Oddly, my husband had received the same machine for his birthday 2 days prior, so this one went back to amazon and the other went back to the gift-giver for HIS refund.
We live in Alaska. Dehydrating is a way of life up here. This is ridiculous. Don't waste your money and research further.
