Is the clear door supposed to be snug fitting? When I installed it there is a gap on both sides towards the top and snug on the bottom

Answer: Those little gaps are normal anda dont affect how the oven works.

Answer: There are two types of sheets that came with mine used in the dehydrator, one is similar to a screen with holes (one for each tray) and another that has a smooth surface to keep juice from draining down (as advertised with mine only one sheet came with the dehydrator) both types of sheets are reusable.

Are the dehyrators easy to clean and does fruit get stuck in the mesh trays?

Answer: I use the mats under my venison to avoid touching the grids. This requires turning the meat half way through the cycle but clean up is very easy. Great machine.

Answer: The trays are very easy to clean and any time I've had food stick to them, I just let them soak for awhile in warm, soapy dishwater. And yes, occasionally some things stick to the tray, but it's an extremely low %. When I'm preparing the trays for the dehydrator, I turn the fruits or veggies so the stickiest side is up.

How is this different than an oven?

Answer: There is more control with the Excalubur. You can get a lower temp and that makes a difference on some foods. I love the timer. I make sweet potato treats for my dogs. In the Excalbur they are bright orange and prefect. In the oven they discolor. Same potato trying them side by side.

Answer: I use my oven in 24 hours and you would have to leave some foods in that long. Plus you would never get the temp. in oven right. Plus you can do much more produce in the dehydrator than the oven. I can even move my dehydrator to out of my kitchen if I am doing onions and friend let me tell you YOU will want to when working on 50 lbs. of onions! With your oven, you are guessing with everything. Please get this dehydrator, don't waste your food!

My wife uses her blender to grind specific products for spices (peppers, basil, etc...) as appropriate. The drying process takes approximately twelve hours or longer depending on the product.

The door sets in the groove on the top of the dehydrater and does not fall off of it is properly seated & is designed to easily move for faster & not to hamper access to trays for, loading, rotating etc. I have tried dehydrator with hinged doors that makes this process awkward. Answer: Yes the outer parts are made of bpa free abs plastic. Please keep in mind that bpa transfer is only a concern when there is contact where it can leach out or when heated under high heat. In the case of this dehydrator neither will occur during normal use.

why does the picture look all crusty on top? does it come looking like that?

Answer: There is a texture to the plastic. It is all black plastic, but depending on how the light hits it it can have a SLIGHT grey effect. The studio lights accentuates the grey effect greatly. In normal house lights, it looks very black with a texture to it.

Answer: The " Crusty" appearance in photo on the surface of the top of the dehydrator is the texture of the plastic as manufactured by Excalibur. If I were to make a guess this texture was chosen instead of a gloss or highly polished to limit abrasion scratch marks caused by habitually using flat surface as temporary storage of plastic trays, kitchen tools etc. The machine itself is AWESOME with or without textured top surface.

I did find however when lighter things like peppers are almost dry and you open the door, the fan then blows the tray contents around so you have to rearrange them before reinserting the tray and replacing the door.

Answer: I've had (and used a LOT) this dehydrator for 3 years. If what I'm drying is small enough to fill every tray, I use them all - if too large, i use every other. The circulating fan keeps the heat pretty even and if a tray is still not dry enough, I just leave it in for however long while i'm finishing processing the rest.

Can this model make yogurt? What else? (I make yogurt in a yogurt maker and can only guess as to how one would make it in a dehydrator)

Answer: You can make yogurt in all of the Excalibur Dehydrators because their trays are removable to make room for a glass jar. Make your yogurt recipe and put the mixture in glass jars with a lids on. Remove the dehydrator shelves and put the jar on the bottom of the dehydrator, set the dehydrator at 105 degrees for 8-10 hours. The Dehydrator will maintain the 105 temperature.

Answer: Sorry but at 105 most of the beneficial bacteria will be dead. Some might still be alive and it will give you a poor quality yogurt but you really want around 90 to make great yogurt.

Answer: I prefer the old fashioned timer and I've read on different sites about failure of digital/computerized timers on these dehydrators. Maybe I'm old fashioned but always prefer non computerized appliances.

Is there a difference between the digital timer and the knob timer? I read the knob timer works even if you have a power failure.

Answer: I don't know. Perhaps it is true and the knob timer is geared and will run without power but buying just a timer to do so would be less expensive than buying the dehydrater which will not dehydrate if there is no electricity.

Answer: No the timers don't work without electricity. The timers run your temperature control and fan shut off time. Hopefully it is mostly dry if electricity goes out. I made a outdoor solar dryer just in case with a manual timer...hope that helps.

Very pleased. It does a good job quickly and efficiently. A bit noisy. Love the timer function. Trays do need to be rotated. The flat trays are difficult for doing liquid items. Hopefully it will stand up with daily use. Things are not made to last like they used to. Trays are quite flimsy so must be careful. I hand wash only.

EXCELLENT design for ease of using and for dehydrating. I love the clear door (you may not be able to see what's going on in the back of the dehydrator but you can see how the food is progressing in the front). If I didn't have a clear door, I'd be losing a lot of heat by removing the door 'just to check how things are doing' throughout the dehydrating process. This is the only dehydrator I've ever owned. I did try a friend's round dehydrator and there is just no comparison. I'm glad I went with the 9 tray Excalibur rather than a smaller version. 9 trays fills up fast and sometimes I wish I had more! Also, on some thick foods you are instructed to take out every other tray when dehydrating. I also like the timer. The white poly-screen drying inserts are great as you can gently bend them to remove and funnel the dehydrated food into bags or containers. I wish the company would include one Paraflexx sheet (for making fruit leathers) so the consumer has a top of the line item to use with a top of the line dehydrator.

First run, dehydrating sunflower seeds, this item sounds like a rattle trap and can be heard from anywhere in our large home.

Tightened all the screws, tried putting a shim under one foot to see if introducing torque in the frame would help. No dice. There is no reason a unit like this should be so loud.

Seems like decent quality otherwise. May have to send it back based on noise levels alone.

I love using this dehydrator. I have dried so many fruits, vegetables, herbs and mushrooms that turned out wonderfully and tasted excellently. The dehydrator came with a very handy booklet/user guide with recipes. Even though I bought additional books on the subject, you don't really need any other to get started. The accompanying booklet is pretty good. The clear door was worth the extra money, in my opinion. It makes it easier to actually see the products in their stages of drying. You don't have to keep removing the door to take a peek and releasing all of the warm air. It is very easy to clean. I was impressed just how much produce I could fit on the 9 generous shelves. The only downside: this dehydrator was quiet for the first hour, then it developed some obnoxious rattles with the rear metal panel and hanging door. I have found ways to make it quiet again. Even though the noise is a problem to resolve, I still give the Excalibur Dehydrator 5 stars just because it works so wonderfully...way above my expectations.

After reading reviews and studying different brands I decided on the Excalibur Dehydrator 9-Tray Clear Door w/Timer . I have used it once so far to make 5lbs of beef jerky. 5lbs was right at half full. I made the right choice, simple to use. A lot of the reviews said it was loud. I didn't think it was loud at at all. I would buy this dehydrator again. I will try to update after i use it a few more times.

The trays were warped and too narrow to fit inside the dehydrator. They would not stay on alignment because they could not reach the rails. One tray was tossed-in outside of the dehydrator because of this mess. This package looked like pieces and parts were thrown together as an attempt to dump a bunch of mismatched garbage. NOT impressed that it is "made in the USA." For nearly $400, I was horrified that this crap would be unloaded by amazon.
Oddly, my husband had received the same machine for his birthday 2 days prior, so this one went back to amazon and the other went back to the gift-giver for HIS refund.
We live in Alaska. Dehydrating is a way of life up here. This is ridiculous. Don't waste your money and research further.

I love this. I make the best kale chips on the planet with this thing. I never liked kale chips before .
I dehydrate fruit that is about to go bad. I even dehydrated some potatoes that I later used in an au gratin recipe.
I barely waste any veggies or fruit any more. It comes with a pretty good book with recipes.

Arrived well packed and quick shipping. I have only got a chance to use it once. I think dehydrating will be a learning curve with altitude and humidity variances. But, I am confident this was a good purchase over the round type of dehydrators. Was nice not to have to rotate the trays. It is a little on the louder side though. It was the pitch that sent my husbands hearing aides crazy as I set it up in the kitchen/living room area. I will move it to garage next time so he won’t hear it. Product is durable and worth the money. The book and tongs a nice extra. I did purchase the stronger silicon liners also. The ones that come with it, probably work fine, but the thicker ones I think will last a lot longer.

I love how it dries , so easy and fast but.. temp control doesn’t really change with the dial and the rattling sound the door makes drives me nuts .. you can try to adjust the door but it just vibrates back to rattling position..???? I have the see through door 9 tray.

Love this dehydrator. The delivery was frustrating. The first one made it to Portland UPS and got lost or was missing. A second one was ordered and arrived within a week. After it arrived i started using it immediately and it is very efficient and easy to use.

I wanted a dehydrator that had good ratings. Well this one may be good but for the price it should have been in good working order. Timer is off by two hours. timer is a must. For the price timer should work. Ordered another one and it had the same problem. If this was a garage sale find that would have been okay. Sent both back and will look for something else. When I received the second one the packaging was awful. I look like one that had been sent back from someone else. Nothing was in a package. All corners were broke. I was so disappointed. Thought I was getting the best.

This item does not seem to be of good quality. My timer was broken out of the box, it seems to dehydrate fine, but I do not imagine it will last long. Liquid comes out of the bottom. Not impressed. I live out of the country so I cannot return, or I definitely would.

This product is rock solid! It has a 10 year warranty so I'm not too worried about something going wrong. My mom also has had the same Excalibur dehydrator minus the clear door and it has performed flawlessly for over 10 years! I've made 2 excellent batches of beef jerky on my third right now. I saw a couple people giving this a 1 star review for being damaged in shipping. Really?? Send it back and get another one knuckleheads! It's not the manufacturers fault it was damaged in shipping!
