Questions about Berkley Dough Bait Mold
Q:
A 12/16 so is it 3/4 '' ball ???
Answer: Hi, they come in a pair and the 12/16 refers to the size of hooks. One can accommodate #12 treble hook and smaller and the other similar #16 hooks and smaller. They work good and fom a perfect floating powerboat ball without much mess or waste.
Q:
what size and hook used
Answer: There are two sizes in the package. I use the smaller of the two most of the time for trout. I think we use number 12 or 14 treble hooks. We love them.
Answer: I use a size 14 treble hook with the larger mold. Not sure about the size for the small mold, as I haven't used that one yet.
Answer: Size 14 treble hook
Answer: any size
Product reviews of Berkley Dough Bait Mold
N. And L. Rivera : Size matters
Glad it was cheap! The small one fit in the power bait jar but was too small for the sz 14 hook. The bigger one wouldn't fit into the power bait jar, so it was pointless. I won't use them again.
Ana : Bait mold

MADE FISHING WITH POWER BAIT EASIER
Wandakay : Not impressed with the "Berkley Dough Bait Mold" Doesn't work as well as they claim it does..
Not impressed with the Berkley Dough Bait Mold. I bought this for my son who has so issues with putting bait on hook.. Its hard to use it don't work like they claim it does, so glad I never bought anymore.. design needs improvement..
daniel : Its "ok"
It does make a good uniform ball but it sucks at keeping it on the hook. I tried many ways of using it and I was hoping the compression would make a tight, tight, ball that would float better and also fuse both halves and keep it on the hook better but it doesnt. Where the two halves join there is a fine separation regardless of how much you fill both halves on the tool and how hard you press. With hard casts the bait will come flying off into two pieces.
I dont really care for my hands being dirty as I roll a small amount in my palms and then make a tight ball to put on the hook and then dip it in the water for ~10 seconds, and then let it "dry" outside the water for about a minute and it solidifies very well onto the hook. I can cast a good 75 yards and be confident my bait is still on the hook, reel it back in and recast if needed as long as theres no seaweed to rip it off the hook. Doing that same exact method with the tool, I see my bait fly into two halves on hard casts before it hits the water lol. It was roughly 2 bucks and now there charging 6 bucks so take my advice when I say hard pass. Making a ball with your hands and putting it on the hook takes 20 seconds and with the tool I was spending a good minute packing both sides, pressing it into the ball, and cleaning up excess.
raul castaneda : Four Stars
it works good, dont have any issues.
Hawk78 : Not very useful
These are more of a gimmick than an actual useful tool. Makes a bigger mess then if I just use my fingers to scoop it out. Designed to work with treble hooks and not snell hooks.
fish-n-fool : Great Mold
Wish i had this 25 plus years ago when my Dad and I use to fish trout all the time.

Works great with doughbaits and keeps it off your hands.
Amazon Customer : If you fish with dough often, the amount of dough saved will allow it to pay for itself
I used this with power bait to fish for stocked rainbow trout. This helped keep my hands clean and dry when it was only 50-55 degrees out. I found I could get the power bait tight on the hook using less dough than if I used my hands. Only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that I wish this came with a mold that would fit a size 6 octopus circle hook for slip bobber fishing in deep lakes. But this works well for size 8 - 12 hooks. Below is a picture of a trout I caused with the help of this mold.

smtireman : works ok for keeping your fingers out of the dough
it worked ok, the dough gets stuck in the mold and you still end up using your finger to get it out. I prefer the suction device type better that makes a cylindrical plug.
Thomas : Just the right amount for most hooks
Seems very sturdy and durable, which is good for the low price. I usually use the large one which typically takes just the right mount to get the hook to float, depending on the size hook you use. If it doesn’t take enough, you can scoop of a bit more and just add it to the ball it already made so it isn’t a problem. I don’t use the smaller one too much but with a smaller hook it would work well also.
Warriorpoet : Worked very nice!
Molded the powerbait into easy to use balls to put on the hooks. The powerbait didn't attract any fish, but that doesn't matter for this review. Worked easily.

Anthony L. Williams : Mold That Bait
Made using Powerbait a breeze, doing it by hand can be a PITA for an occasional weekend warrior fisherman like myself and those I fish with. A little pricey for what it is but it gets the job done.

This thing doesn't really do on its own - every time I still have to manually detach the balls from the holes and just to roll it a bit more.
James from Boise : Allowsfor better control of Powerbait ball size
I initially got this item thinking it would help with reducing the amount used and to keep my hands clean. while it does help with creating a consistent sized bait ball, I found that the non-stick surface was really a double-edge sword. It allowed for easy release but sometimes the bail ball would slide out and hit the ground picking up dirt...the deeper into the Berkley trout powerbait jar I went the more this seemed to happen. I've only used this on one trip and I'm sure there has to be a knack to get this thing working better, so I intent to figure it out on future trips. I did find that the hit 'n runs some of the trout attempted did not dislodge the formed bait ball where on the hand-formed balls they would something pop apart at the seams that occur in the hand-forming process.
Overall, a nice idea that in theory should help to conserve the powerbait and reduce fish hit 'n runs that knock the bait loose. For the price it's really hard to not justify getting one to just try out as it costs less than a lot of jigs or a package of treble hooks. I'm sure with more practice it will be a useful tool in my tackle box.
