About Us
The Berkley story is deeply rooted in the idea of the American Dream. It's about hard work, struggle, and tough times. And it's about building partnerships to accomplish goals. Still, the story of Berkley is much more than the story of Berkley Bedell. It's also the story of dedicated co-workers and loyal customers, who were equally willing to take risks.
It all began in Spirit Lake, Iowa, in June of 1937, when 16-year old Berkley Bedell took $50.00 from his paper route earnings to start a business selling his hand-tied flies to fishing tackle shops and vacationing anglers. In his upstairs bedroom, with hair clipped from the family dog, Stubby, and feathers from the backyard chickens, young Berkley crafted flies to entice local bluegill and bass from their underwater cover. The Berkley Fly Co. was founded.
By the time Berk graduated from high school in 1939, he was employing several area girls who made flies, silkworm gut, and cable wire leaders in their homes. The business soon outgrew Berk's parent's basement and living room. He expanded to the second floor of the local grocery store, using a tub filled with ice and a fan for air conditioning.
After attending the state university and serving in the Army Air Corps, Berk returned to Spirit Lake in 1945 to start Berkley and Company. The business focus was on its cable wire leaders. One evening, while reading Popular Science, Berk learned about a Connecticut company that was producing nylon-covered cable for sailboat rigging. After visiting their plant, he began to work on nylon-coated wire for use in fishing leaders. production began in Spirit Lake. Shortly after this, the distinctive Berkley heart logo was designed with the slogan "nylon leader with a heart of stainless steel."
Berk next became interested in extruding nylon monofilament fishing line. At that time, all nylon came from DuPont. After receiving a license from DuPont, Berk returned to Spirit Lake to begin work developing equipment to produce nylon. The initial extrusion equipment consisted of reclaimed washing machine wringers, bicycle wheels, and other homespun materials. Soon Berkley was marketing private brand mono as well as Dew Flex monofilament. Ongoing experimentation would soon yield the company's breakthrough innovation - Trilene.
In 1959, Berkley introduced Trilene at about the same time DuPont introduced Stren. To help introduce the new line, Berk sent out thousands of sample spools of line and asked store owners to have their best fisherman try it on a spinning reel. Fishermen loved the line and it began the successful launch of Berkley Trilene.
The next four decades were a time of great growth for the company. In the 1960's Berkley entered into the rod business, which lead to international expansion in the 1970's. Soft plastic baits made an appearance in the 1980's. The 1990's through today have seen significant technology improvements in all of the Berkley products. From the beginning, Berkley has committed significant resources to research and development - a continuing strategy that has resulted in countless product innovations, including Berkley Trilene, the Lightning Rod, PowerBait, FireLine, and more recently Gulp!? and Gulp! Alive.

Questions about Berkley PowerBait Natural Glitter Trout Dough Fishing Bait , 1.8 oz
Q:
how big of a ball can a 10 " rainbow trout take? It takes a lot to float a #10 treble hook. Would a 10"er eat a 1" ball?
Answer: A ball about the size of a fresh cranberry should be more than sufficient. You could downsize to a #12 or # 16 hook easily. I've caught 25lb. lake trout on # 22 flies. A large hook doesn't necessarily mean you will catch a bigger fish. I hope this was helpful.
Answer: Ball size big enough to float hook. I would prefer that you use #14 or #16 hook.
Q:
I live in nys, is this bait work in streams and what kind/ Color ??
Answer: Yes it's a trout..bait. Chartreuse...is the hottest color... especially in murky water
Answer: I used it in ponds and streams
Answer: works in most lakes. I use crickets or grasshoppers in streams and small rivers
Q:
Do I roll a little ball and put it on the hook?
Answer: Yes. I put a dime sized ball or slightly larger of power bait and completely cover my hook.
Answer: Number 18 treble hook with a small ball maybe a half inch across at the most plus some garlic dip will do wonders remember when you eat something you don't put the whole steak in your mouth little bites at a time
Answer: Yes, I roll a small piece onto a small muddeye hook, then enough leader to ensure bait floats.
Answer: yes...just enough to cover hook.
Q:
are you able to ship to Singapore? if so what will the postage cost me? How long do i get to receive this item upon purchase?
Answer: No, we do not ship to Singapore.
Answer: No, sorry
Q:
Does this bait float?
Answer: Yes it does float.
Answer: Nope
Q:
we ordered 2 of these from you and only received one ~ Why??
Q:
could this work for carps?
Answer: We have a couple of grass carp in our trout pond and they never go after it so I would assume there is better bait for them.
Answer: No...tried it...carp like sweet baits
Answer: Sure, they eat just about any type of bait. They're not picky.
Q:
Is it reusable or one time use?
Answer: One time use. This is a dough bait. You form a ball on your hook or use a small ball sponge on the hook to roll in the dough bait. The bait dissolves in water.
Answer: It is reusable until you finish the jar.
Answer: Each piece is a one time use.
Answer: yes, just screw the lid back on. I have used my jar for several months now.
Q:
Can you use these with Treble Hooks?
Answer: it tells you right in the bag what size treble hook to use. #14 - #18
Answer: Yes, provided they are small ones.
Answer: yes #18 works best
Answer: yes
Q:
Is there a powerbait for inshore fishing, catching baitfish too?
Answer: Power bait nibbles stay more secure on the hook in rough or faster moving water. Color choice varies.
Answer: All I can tell you is that power bait needs to be flavored with garlic for awesome results
Answer: Works well,,green works sierra
Q:
Is this biodegradable/ non toxic?
Answer: Yes it’s biodegradable and non toxic
Q:
Why is Amazon selling this (Powerbait Twist) in such a small jar (1.1oz) when one can find it elsewhere for lessor price in a larger 1.75oz jar?
Q:
Is the hatchery pellet white or like a brownish color
Answer: Its brown and has worked a treat. Two big rainbow trout the first time I used it. I don't think that Amazon have the brown hatchery pellet available anymore which is a shame because I need to buy some more.
Answer: Hatchery pellet is a brown , tight lines
Q:
Does it contain organic or processed food which is unlawful on some MI trout lakes?
Answer: Read the label..daaaaaa
Q:
Does it work in salt water ?
Q:
Can trout actually digest this stuff?
Answer: They can, because it is a dough bait it will liquify in there system and is easily digested and passed without hurting them.
Answer: yes they do and its excellent bait for trout.
Answer: yes, I looked into it and called Berkley all the stuff I found said yes....corn is very bad for them though...
Answer: I don't know ,but when you clean then you find it in gullit .They also make a power bait that looks and smells like what they get fed in hatchery and it has no glitter or bright color
Q:
What shipping method do you use?
Q:
Can you catch anything salt water with it
Answer: for saltwater fishing, I would recommend the Berkley Gulp baits, not the trout paste, I hope this helps.
Answer: It's not made for Saltwater fishing, but I've never used it for Saltwater
Q:
What the difference between Trout nuggets and Trout nibbles
Answer: Nibbles stay on hook best. Scent is what really makes difference.
Q:
Why the heck so expensive? $12 for a $4 jar???
Q:
Does this float?
Answer: Not unless it uses a raft . Seriously though, they do sink.
Answer: Yes.
Q:
I live in Maryland and have mostly lake and river fishing. In the lakes we have some large mouth bass and other fish. Is this a good bait to start ?
Answer: Not for bass, you want the large worms not the dough powerbaits. If your targeting trout and potentially perch it will be good. Not totally sure about the perch part though.
Q:
Will they work for stock trout?
Answer: Yes. They work very well on stocked trout
Answer: Absolutely, I've caught many stocked trout along with a couple of 5 pounders, while all varieties work, I prefer the garlic scented.
Answer: Yes, I have caught to stocked rainbows this week using them.
Answer: Yes, they did for us.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can i use it in saltwater like mediterranean sea or red sea ?
Answer: I have caught lots of rainbow trout in freshwater with this bait - it is awesome. But the other species in our local dams (like bass, curper, barbel, carp & tilapia) have never taken this bait. I have not tried it in sea water, so am not qualified to answer directly, but based on what I do know my gut feel is it may not be your best bet as a primary bait, but it is probably worth a try.
Answer: It's made primarily for Rainbow Trout, so any other fish fresh or saltwater would be questionable.
Answer: Made for freshwater. But can still work in salt water.
Answer: I don’t know I use it freshwater fishing and it’s great
Q:
Is this made with pvc plastic? if so, how can it be good for the environment?
Answer: It's dough. No plastic.
Q:
Why did I receive my bait... but inside was replaced with yellow play doh ?
Answer: return it if you ordered the eggs.
Q:
Does it stay fresh in container for long? Will it lose its scent over time?
Answer: Once opened you need to use it within a reasonable amount of time. It won't lose its scent, but it will get hard and unusable. I have encountered a couple of jars that were no good when I opened them. My advice is to buy from a tackle shop that sells a lot of this stuff and always has a fresh supply on hand.
Answer: Stays fresh quite a long while
Answer: It will lose its scent after awhile., then dry out.
Answer: I have mines for over a year now still smells like the first day I opened it
Answer: I've used it from one season to another & had no problem. This stuff really works.
Q:
Can I use this bait for to fish in Lake Michigan
Answer: No...michigan fish will not eat it.
Answer: I imagine you could use it in all the Great Lakes.I never fished the Great Lakes but if I did.I would try it.
Answer: How am I suppose to know that ?? I liver in PA.. Call your local fish and game commission
Answer: Sure. I have caught bass on it as well.
Answer: Yes. Used all the time.
Answer: Yes, you can.
Q:
Are trout the only fish that fall for this bait?
Answer: Depending on the time I'm fishing I'm either catching all trout or all catfish, but sometimes the catfish can't get enough of this stuff!
Answer: I've only caught Trout on Powerbait, but I had a few guys tell me that Catfish will occasionally bite on it.
Answer: Yes.
Q:
do they float?
Answer: Yes for awhile then sink
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
Will this work for panfish?
Answer: Yes
Q:
are there two jars for this item? Thx.
Q:
Has anyone used this product for Lake Trout?
Answer: All trout....Lakers...love it
Answer: Not that I'm aware of.
Q:
How many come in a pack?
Answer: 30-40
Answer: It's a large package I would say 30 pellets
Q:
Does this work in the summer or early fall? And if so how productive is this?
Answer: We have used it from early spring through the fall with good results.
Q:
Do you still sell Berkeley panfish paste sent
Answer: No
Q:
Do these expire? I bought these a year ago and I feel kind a hard
Answer: If you can get them on a hook they will still work!
Answer: No
Q:
Will this work on fish other than trout?
Answer: Iv caught sunfish and perch with it as well and a brown bullhead or 2
Q:
Can it be used to catch panfish?
Answer: I have never had panfish show any interest in it. It has been formulated primarily for Rainbow Trout. They do make a Crappie one that might work though, but I've never used it.
Answer: I have only ever caught trout with this bait, so I can't answer this question for sure. I've used it in dams with bass, curper, tilapia, carp, barbel and yellows - and none of them show any interest in it.
Q:
Why is it twice the price as the local bait store?
Q:
Can you catch bass with that
Answer: If you are really lucky. Try worms, lures or power worms ( a Berkeley product).
Answer: No, this trout bait only
Q:
Glass or plastic jar?
Answer: A sealed plastic jar.
Answer: Plastic Usually eggs are the only ones in glass jars
Answer: The jar is made out of a silica based substance.
Answer: Plastic.
Answer: Plastic
Answer: I believe this particular one was plastic
Q:
can i use it for saltwater fishing
Answer: Sure. Keep in mind this floats, unless you put a sinker on it.
Q:
Is it possible delivery to Dubai?
Answer: NO
Q:
What hook to use with this bait for trout?
Answer: If you are going to keep the trout, the best hook to use is a tiny #18 treble hook. If catch and release, use a #16 or #14 single hook with the barb pinched.
Answer: from number 8 to 4 but trout number 8 swallows very far inside and it is almost never possible to keep it alive
Answer: As small as possible, #6 or #8 or small treble. Be sure bait covers entire hook.
Q:
Do any of these have glitter in them?
Answer: No glitter but they are good to use to mix with glitter bait to make color change or less glitter
Q:
Do steelhead like this?
Answer: It would not surprise me at all. This past year I have caught trout, bluegill, smallmouth bass and even bullhead catfish on PowerBait. All fish seem to like it.
Q:
What is this made out of?
Answer: I believe PowerBait is soy-based. The actual formula is a secret. Whatever Berkley uses -- it works!
Q:
whats the best color to use? and does this bait also work for panfish?
Answer: While being formulated for trout (like what they feed trout in the hatcheries), we have caught MANY crappie with it. I like red or pink or chartreuse best. If targeting panfish, I would use white or more natural color. Hope that helps.
Answer: There really no wrong color. I've caught fish on the yellow pink and rainbow. I've only caught panfish on this bait. No trout yet, lol!
Answer: I always seem to have the best luck with the rainbow. I use other colors but they seem to hit rainbow most often, when rainbow is not working I use chartreuse or sherbet
Answer: Power bait with yellow flakes I know nothing about panfish
Answer: that product is generally not used for panfish.
Answer: rainbow w/ glitter has been the best for myself for catching trout, bream and perch won't bother it at all.
Answer: I know near me the glitter green is preferred because that is what the trout are fed at the hatchery before they stock the water.
Answer: Pink
Q:
What size is this powerbait item?
Answer: The jar is about the size of a small mustard jar, contains about half a tea cup full. The bait is sort of like soft Plasticine in consistency and it lasts a long time in water. This is manily in my humble experience, because no fish will touch it! I have Trout, Perch, Roach Rudd and Carp in my private lake in France and no fish has ever tried to take it when other baits work. I am old fashioned but give me Bread paste and Worms any day!
Product reviews of Berkley PowerBait Natural Glitter Trout Dough Fishing Bait , 1.8 oz
Grumpy Grandpa : Great product for the price
It's made by berkley
Nothing else needs to be said
There products are TOP of the line
SJJ : GREAT ATRACTIVITY FOR TROUT
I tried many "secret" baits, but this one has high visibility and attraction for trout. I think that pictures say for itself. I also used treble hooks instead regular ones. Power bait stays nice and firm on treble hook, and fish will definitely go away if proper line is used. I prefer Fluo carbon clear or green 8-10 Lbs.
There is only one more to say. Every water has it's own baits ! What works on one lake or river may not work at all on another one !
Kenny : better than the dough

Kawa : Dry it before using
Great product but it was to heavy it does not float, which is nessecary for fish to bite. Although trout do bottom feed it is essential it is at least 6 inches off the floor. After drying for 2 days it floats and i was able to catch allot of trout after that. Before that this product was 0/10 after drying i caught so many trout i trully was astonished at the results.
Lynn M. Veach : Got hits where other baits did not
Only thing that got a bit in 4 hours of fishing ???? the fish liked it. Can't wait to try it on the river.
Rnb3s9 : The best
The cheese is my favorite. It’s my primary use powerbait
Mary G : Kinda spendy but it catches fish
Catching fish...kinda expensive, but couldn't find it in stores. Arrived on time and packaged well. Gotta go fishin' again.
Thomas : 1st use caught a rainbow trout. Great product
First use, caught a rainbow trout in stocked pond after about 20-30 minutes. Was a good size! That garlic scent is strong, they must like it. It floats, just make sure to put enough on the hook to get it to float, then attach a weight from hook with desired distance. It will float off bottom, great for stocked ponds. Can’t wait to catch more with it.
Me : For the WIN!
Always bring Powerbait when we head into the mountains fishing, I have always had luck with the rainbow. I caught a pretty nice one using this bait!
z-man : Nope
Stinks…..got nothing and caught nothing after using 10 different times
z-man : Nope
Stinks…..got nothing and caught nothing after using 10 different times
Leanna : Playdough that falls off easily.
Good scent but does not stay on well. Not worth it. Return.
William Perez : Compre
FJM : Works great, stays on the hook, not stale
You can usually find these a little cheaper at Walmart, but the selection on Amazon is pretty darn good. I used this color (orange) over the weekend and it was fresh and stayed on the hook. I highly recommend the following colors for trout in Northern California: Orange, Rainbow, Green (garlic), Pink, and Yellow. I have had success using powerbait for years and when you pair with a trebble hook, it can be deadly good. Use with about an 18 inch leader of 4-6lb floro line.
Killaani ❤'z Tofu ???? : Not sure if we will purchase again
Ok for the value of money but have not caught nothing the pass weekend with it. Kept falling off no matter how we did it, which was terrible. Not much smell to it and easy yes. Caught with nightcrawlers though.
Ken : Trout love it
Seems like the trout love this stuff so I do too. Only wish it was a little less expensive as it seems overpriced. Tried to make some homemade but not as good as the real thing.
Rob : Best trout bait that actually works that I've found!
I see and hear a lot of other fisherman swear by that powerbate goop stuff in a little jar, the bright pink and green and yellow stuff you form over a hook but I've personally never even once caught anything at all on that stuff in my local area. Even panfish avoid that bright colored stuff here. This stuff actually produces bites! Especially for stocked trout even if they're released and in a wild stream. These are extremely similar to what they're fed at the hatchery so they know it's food and go after it. Using this stuff even at hatcheries I'm standing next to others fishing using the bright colored stuff who are sitting there bored to death while I'm reeling in fish after fish.
The con is that there aren't a whole lot of them in the packaging, there's definitely enough to catch a creel limit several times before having to restock. Which is probably something I'll be doing. I have yet to try these at a stocked lake near me that's infamously extremely difficult to catch fish out of. They're definitely there and there's some big ones, but other than a few days around when they're stocked getting them to bite anything rarely to never happens. I have faith this bait might be the trick for waterways like that.

Tommy : Really Catches Trout!
I wasn't sure if this would work but tried it because of all of the reviews. I went trout fishing in Texas after the rainbow trout were released. This works great casting a line with a dime sized ball on the hook and using no bobber. I couldn't believe how quickly the rainbow trout would take the bait after casting into the water. Great item!
D Hano : Nice product, worked when nothing else did
Late in the year when the trout are feeding on snails this worked when nothing else
Seemed to. Got solid strikes and nice rainbow trout
Couldn’t find it at any local stores, will be ordering more
Brett R. : Catches big trout over any other flavor
I catch all my big trout up to 7 pounds so far with this bait.
rick a. : Buyer beware
Powerbait is great. But it took almost a month to get gere The seller was not responsive to my inquiries when emailed or called. I will not buy bait from a bike shop again.
Kenny : they work
Hello Amazon,

Igor E. : Never caught any fish with it, but works great for temporarily patching leaks!
I had gone fishing with a friend of mine, and after we got a couple hundred yards offshore, I noticed a good amount water leaking into the boat. After some quick thought, I took a good clump of this PowerBait, and put it over the leak in the boat. It held great for the four hours that we were out! While I don’t recommend doing this (and I did fix the leak properly after we got back), it worked great for this in a pinch.
Kerry Oldfield : Fish love it!
We use this in a small pond by our house. Lot of sun fish and small trout. We get bites almost instantly! And it's not slimy like worms, so my 7 year old daughter is able to bait her own hook.
behzad : the color
When you order this power bait make sure they send you yellow not beige , that is what I got, I kept it as there is too much trouble returning a bottle of power bait
Jack's Raging Review : Best Bait you can ever buy
I have been using Powerbait for about 3 years and ever since, I never come home empty handed. These are special for trout and boy do they work!!! just have a few bottles of this with you and a few spinners and you literally don't need anything else to capture some nice trout. this bait is to trout what Crack is to Tyrone Biggums. I mean Damn this bait is good!! and by good is I have had moments where it takes me longer to put the bait on the hook, than it takes me to catch a trout.
Tony Khemmanivanh : Chattahoochee river Georgia trout bait favorite
I like this rough bait it's easy to use and stay on the hook. I just leave it in my car and not worry about it going bad. Caught fish everytime I'm out fishing. My setup are #10 egg hook 18" leader line 4lb fluorocarbon to a swivel with bead to a small bullet weight on ultralight rod. I used this on river fishing. Good luck
Adam : Not impressed with powerbait ????????
Powerbait has left me skunked more times than not. Even trying all the different colors and different styles of rig setups and using very thin fluro line the stuff only works good if they are very freshly stocked fish and they are very plentiful. After the Trout been in the water a few days they won't even touch this. Salmon eggs and worms never let me down. Even plain marshmellow or corn are better.
Ernest T. : #1 power bait.
The scent is really effective.
Wurms : WOWZERS!
I went camping and added a jar of this to my tackle. Wondered up and down a shallow river for a couple hours, me using salmon eggs, and my brother a dardevle. Caught nothing. Switched to the Powerbait and in a couple minutes caught a trout. Got my hook, added some more Powerbait and in a couple minutes had caught another one. My brother switched to powerbait and instantly had one hooked. We pulled six trout out of a small fishing hole in about 15-20 minutes. Went back to camp, and my 5 yr old niece wanted to fish. I got her little disney fishing pole set up and threw on some powerbait. After 10 minutes or so, she had a trout.
This stuff is amazing!
Amazon Customer : Didn't enjoy
I honestly just wanted to try something away from the normal live bait but this wasnt it. They very easily come off of the hook. I haven't caught anything with these. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, I dont know. But I wouldn't buy again.

chas : IT REALLY WORKS!!!!!!
Standing Bear lake (Omaha Nebraska) was recently stocked with 7000 trout. I was the only one catching them using the Floating Mice Tails and I put a dab of Powerbait glitter on as well. However, the mice tails were doing it on it their own. Got my limit in less than an hour.
KATHLEEN : Stock trout secret weapon
Love this bait. It looks exactly like what the hatchery feeds their stock trout. Use a small treble hook make a little ball. let it dry in the sun. It will sink if not dry. Need it to float and it does when dry. Tie on line and present. This will be your go to in ponds and stocked lakes
Jack's Raging Review : Best bait you can buy literally!!

Legitly67 : Stays on your hook really well!!!
I fish Citico Creek a lot through out the year. This product works great up there and on the Tellico side also. The hatchery fish are fed brown pellets since birth. That is all they are used to. So when you wrap some of this brown putty around your hook into a little ball the trout goes crazy for it. It stays on your hook better than any other brand I have tried also and I have tried them all it seems. It has a scent and flavor the trout seemed to really like.

nancy peasley : Won’t stay on hook
Item is very hard to use and won’t stay on hook so you can even fish. Very disappointed
Mike P : Stockers are looking for food like they had in the hatchery.
This is it. Use it with some garlic gell at the top of the hook and you will catch stock trout. I use a slip weight and a light hook so it floats from the bottom. If you use the treble hook like they suggest it wont float.
Karson Davis : Favorite power bait of all time
this is my favorite power bait of all time. it has a strong sent to it. that attractive fish really well. holds onto your hook really nice. I've caught so many trout on this power bait highly recommend it
Kate : Perfect for beginners
Worked perfectly! The nibbles are a good size and easy to manage as they don’t stick to each other in the jar. They also smell strongly which makes for good bait. A bit watery when in the water for a while and can fall apart, but does last a few casts
Bruce E. Whitley : works
this bait works very good. had much success with it and it is firm enough to stay on the hook.
Christopher T. : Best trout bait
In the peak of the trout season this garlic scent is hard to come by. In the Pacific Northwest it is a very go to scent. I would always recommend this to anyone wanting a trout fishing bait. It’s a good value for the product. A little cheaper then local stores. And with prime was free shipping for me.
z-man : Nope
Stinks…..got nothing and caught nothing after using 10 different times
B : Falls off hook
I bought it because of mostly good reviews. I don't know if I got a bad jar but it's very dry and airy feeling and hard to make a ball out of. If you do manage to get it on the hook when you cast it out it flies off. Totally pointless
Killaani ❤'z Tofu ???? : Not sure if we will purchase again
Ok for the value of money but have not caught nothing the pass weekend with it. Kept falling off no matter how we did it, which was terrible. Not much smell to it and easy yes. Caught with nightcrawlers though.
behzad : Interesting color misture
Honestly I have not used power baits for a long time but this past fishing trip, showed me that fish attack power bait more than mice tail that I have always used for the past 5 years. Possibly trouts like the dough better these day or changed their preferences, Lady of the lake knows, no matter using some old power baits in my tackle box was really productive. So that is why I ordered whole bunch of Berkley power baits from amazon. I believe this fall and winter I'll be coming home with my limits every time that I fish.
I recommend berkley power bait as they stick to the hook longer than other products in the market.
you can compare the product price from Costco, wayfair, bestbuy, lowes, target, homedepot, Walmart, ebay, amazon to find the best price for you
