Questions about Berkley Gulp! Maggot, 1-1/2-Oz.
Q:
How long will this jar keep once you open it? A week, month or year or more?
Answer: It will last more than 6 months. I bought this back in June and it's still "keeping"
Answer: I’ve had some for years, but close lid after each use.
Answer: I do not know for sure but I used them over 2 summers and they worked until I ran out.
Answer: Yes ????
Q:
If they are gettin dry can I use gulp alive recharge?
Answer: yeah, I accidentally spilled all the juice luckily on the ground and my maggots were getting dry, I used gulp alive recharged and works the same,
Answer: Yes, or any attractant.
Q:
This bait floating?
Answer: No. This bait will sink with the weight of the hook.
Answer: I use it both floating and under water
Answer: no...duzn't float
Answer: Slow sinking, a hook will take it down.
Q:
Will it work for walleye?
Answer: It might, but walleye love live bait like leaches or nightcrawlers.
Answer: I have not tried, perch and crappy love it... in Idaho more cold water... I’m going to the Colombia in three weeks going to give it a shot... hangs on hook good.
Answer: They crumble when put on a hook. Very small.
Q:
approx. how many maggots are in a 1.5 oz. jar?
Answer: more than you can count great power bait
Answer: There are several hundred. Have not had much luck with them here in Alaska or back in Washington.
Answer: About 60 or so.
Q:
Has anybody used these in florida? i live in central east. one review i could find said they didn't work in fl
Answer: I'm up in Michigan and use it for fishing for smaller stuff with my kids, so what I've notice is we out fish people around us who are using worms etc 2:1. Give it a go !!!!
Answer: They are more for freshwater fish. like Sunfish and Croppie.
Q:
where is this product made?
Answer: Berkley Gulp! Maggots are made in the U.S.A.
Answer: In big vats. Then squeezed out into maggot shape ????
Answer: No idea. But works! Especially with grandchildren.
Q:
is the bait alive?
Answer: No. It is artificial & biodegradable. Very convenient because it does not need refrigeration & it catches fish. I use it trolling on Kokanee salmon lures. Works as well as shoepeg corn - even when it is a year old!
Answer: not hardly...it is a good add-on for crappie or perch...i use it on the back hooks of a teeny torpedo and catch MANY perch
Answer: No, it is some type of foam like product shaped like maggots. It does stay on the hook longer and the fish did bite it pretty well. Also, your fingers didn't get maggot guts on them.
Answer: No, it's an artificial maggot, I think it's made from soya, but it looks real and the fish do bite.
Answer: no
Q:
Does it work with saltwater fish
Answer: I do not know. Makes fishing with grandkids easy and more fun.
Answer: I only used it in fresh water. My suggestion though is to buy the gulp worms (no idea what color for saltwater) and cut them up for the size you need.
Answer: My husband doesn't know. We live in New Mexico and aren't around and salt water.
Q:
Anyone get any perch on the ice with these?
Answer: Never fished ON ice but in the Fall when I bought them worked great on bluegill! Sometimes I would cut them into two pieces to catch very small bluegill to use as bait!
Answer: I had limited success with this bait. Live meal worms or wax worms perform much better.
Answer: I used them just last week and got my limit !!
Answer: Do know
Q:
what size hook should i use?
Answer: Berkley does not have a recommended hook size on either the product or their web site.
Answer: I'd use the smallest hooks you can. Just because it attracts a lot of panfish, and with the bigger hooks it will rip out of them on a bite. When I've used several maggots for bass I've used a bigger hook.
Answer: I use size 12 for Sunny’s
Q:
Hello, is it good for fishing in the sea? For what kind of fish? Thanks Sergio
Answer: I've used it near the local ocean bridge pilings to catch bait fish. The largest thing I've caught using them is a ten inch Bluefish.
Answer: I don't know Sergio, I only fish in lakes for sunnys with my younger brother.
Answer: Not sure, haven’t tried it for sea fishing, worth giving it’s go, you never know !!!
Answer: I always used it for Trout and Kokannee in lakes and rivers with great success. Not sure about the Ocean
Answer: Not sure, we use for freshwater panfish like bluegill, crappie and perch.
Q:
Do these need to be kept refrigerated?
Answer: Refrigeration is not needed. But keep the lid tightly closed to preserve the liquid. I remove the trailing hook on a small floating repala. I then tie a floating fly about 6" behind. I bait the fly with beige colored maggots. Blue Gills love them.
Answer: No they do not need to be kept refrigerated
Q:
Do these need to be refrigerated?
Answer: After opening they still last for several days.
Q:
Are the maggots alive?
Answer: Scduffy, these are not live maggots, they are made from natural material and are scented to increase your chances. I've used them fishing and they last pretty long with really good results. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Answer: These are not real maggots. They are artificial.
Q:
whats the best color to use? in water that is not super clear only can see down 4-5ft
Answer: I have always preferred the natural (white) but chartreuse may work well in those conditions. I believe them to be more "scent driven" than color driven. IMHO
Answer: I think all colors would work in 4-5 foot visibility. I think fish are attracted by the smell.
Answer: I have used chartreuse works better.
Product reviews of Berkley Gulp! Maggot, 1-1/2-Oz.
Amazon Customer : Trout Killer
Best trout bait I have ever used. The Rainbow trout hit this with every cast.
Amazon Customer : Soft Bait Maggots
I have not yet used these (not been opened). I am hoping to catch some nice fish with them. They have mostly good reviews, time will tell.
Schubeedoo : Five Stars
good bait
Mike Heyfron : Caught Multiple fish
Tried it a couple times now and had get luck yesterday worked great. Blue gill and sun fish liked it
Jester : Work pretty well for Bluegills
These catch bluegill and that's what matters.
Wes Murphy : Seems fine have not used it yet
Fast delivery and value seems to be ok
Rio Grande : Fish with this if you are trying to attract smaller trout or pan fish.
Good for small trout and probably pan fish but haven't tried it on the pan fish yet. I fish this with only one small split shot and a very sensitive float.
john faucett : Four Stars
does good job
ppaullywallnuts : Survival ice fishing
If you ice fish, you need these. Phenomenal catching with an awesome shelf life in my ice fishing jacket. A tiny Ziploc bag of these could keep you surviving for quite some time. The bait holds together very well on small hooks and catches just about anything. I tip my crappie jigs with these and crappie nibbles and if they show on the screen they bite. No bait shop stops to start the day. They will freeze if cold enough and get brittle so I keep them close by.
BRIAN F OWENS : Will last for a long time.... thousands of the little devils...
Perch / crappy love this stuff...
reddyfeet : Great stuff!
Extremely good bait for freshwater use. Just like all the other Gulp products I've used, these are top of the line, often outfishing natural baits.
Seneca Guns : Waste of money
I’ve tried these on several occasions and caught nothing
Atrain : Great for Ice Fishing
Works great for ice fishing just as well as live bait, and it's probably cheaper as well.
michael rowland : Exactly what was described, small stinky bait that will ...
Exactly what was described, small stinky bait that will survive a nuclear winter. Small enough to carry around and won't fight back getting a hook run thru it lol
D. D. LeDu : Works!
I fish for trout in small ponds and mountain streams. For fifty years I have used "local" bait, such as grasshoppers, dragonflies, larva, etc. In fact, I normally spend more time hunting bait (such as grasshoppers) than fish. When I ran out, I tried these fake maggots. I was surprised to find they worked as well as natural bait. I will not go fishing without them.
Apierce27 : Five Stars
slamming crappies all day long on these
Luke W P Nunn : Great in even murky water. Catch with every cast! Lasts longer than dough baits.
The bluegills love these. My 8y/o son puts a single one on a hook, running the hook fully through from tip to tip so it takes on the curved shape of the hook and leaves just the barb sticking out the end. Catches a fish with every cast, and when used this way it really reduces the amount of missed bites that result in losing the bait.
mike : Convenient
Perfect for catching trout and bait
Russ Jones : good deal
good price . they work ok for what they are
terry c. : Happy
Were exactly as i expected. Happy customer
Apierce27 : Five Stars
slamming crappies all day long on these
Jennifer M. : Work good but expensive
Needed some for ice fishing so went ahead and bought them. They work just as good as live ones but there expensive for what you get. Dosent have too much of a scent either. But if you need some wax worms and don't have a bait shop near you or can't get there would definitely recommend these I caught just as much with these compared to the live ones.
RB : Caught a fabulous trout!
We mostly just pinch these into thirds so that my three young kids can catch endless bluegill, but a few days ago I shoved three of these onto a weighted hook, tossed it into my local lake, and was rewarded with an 18 inch trout.
Now, in fairness, I'm really bad at fishing and I have to admit that there have also been 4 or 5 days where I've been troutless all day on this and every other thing I've tried. But my kids and I are up to 2 trout with these maggots and 0 other (non-bluegill) fish with everything else. That should speak volumes.

As advertised and fast shipping.

Michael Stachowiak : Hard to hook but they work.
These things are pretty small and hard to hook on but they work as good or better than live bait. Tried them side by side with live redworms. Last longer on the hook and catch more fish.
George : Work well
They work well for ice fishing . Saves money too cause they last longer then a real one ,when fish bite .
Jaimie L Wilson : Complete garbage
Fish must hate it. Not one bite and I’ve tried it multiple times.
Dayne S. : Duds
Did not work do not catch fish
michael rowland : Exactly what was described, small stinky bait that will ...

I have not yet used these (not been opened). I am hoping to catch some nice fish with them. They have mostly good reviews, time will tell.
Darrell W Taylor : Three Stars
Does not work as well as live bait.
Brett B. : Poor product
These fall apart as quickly as the nibbles
Brianna Stewart : I mean, it’s not the worst, but you’re better off with real worms
Just go buy some real worms, the fish will bite better. These really don’t work for anything but bluegill, and even the bluegill don’t want it over a real worm. So, yanno…
JT : tuff maggots
i poured the contents on a paper plate and set it in the sun for 30 minutes to dry them out...that makes them stay on the hook better...had good bites from perch...haven't used it on crappie yet, which is my target fish...my fishing bud uses Berkley nibbles so we'll have a comparison test
Johnnie Lugnuts : Great Sauted in butter and garlic
No really, use these all the time for trout and Kokanne, fish love them, This is a great price

Panfish and blue gills love this stuff, they work.
B : Tried them once so far on a fishing trip.
Tried them once so far on a fishing trip. Fish hit this just as much as anything esle on my hooks
Teeee : Chasing slabbers
As advertised and fast shipping.
Aiptasia : A bit dessicated
Old new stock. Jar arrived with dried, dessicated baits in them. Not plump, probably been sitting for a while.
David : did not work for me on south flo fresh water
I got this to replace my current bait for pan fish( home made mix of flour and other things), I use this in freshwater ponds, lakes and canals, this product did not worked for me, the fish just look at it but is not interested on eating it, even when I throw it with no hook they dont eat it
TERRY FREHNER : No fish yet.
Didn't catch a thing but of course the fish weren't biting.
Amazon Customer : Good
Good
sdboatguy : Tasty!
Well the trout seem to like them when combined with a orange/green ice ant. they seem to stay on small hooks very well
